    Adam,

from previous post, the fox signing really only accelerates things if he is better than and replacing one of Pionk, Tony or Shatty (unlikely the latter) and the other two are either cut entirely or one remains as a third pair with a solid lefty partner. But would still need a true top pair to be acquired or emerge from within. No small task there.

All for adding Panarin as we could have a great group of top 6 wingers in short order and would ease burden on Chytil or whoever else is slotted as 2nd line center

Meanwhile, as we RANGERS FANS concern ourselves with Adam Fox and upgrading the defense, Larry Brooks writes of the curious case of the missing Jordan Eberle in the Post this morning.

For a team struggling to score on the injury-ridden yet opportunistic Candy Canes, it is interesting Eberle has been used so little a the ends of games when a game-tying goal has been needed.

Furthermore, Coach of Year Candidate Trotz is leaving open the possibility of starting Greiss in goal. Oy vey!

All kidding aside I would expect the Islanders to play their best game of the series tonight and get a W.
Carolina may be feeling pressure for the first time since the post season began. That coupled with the thought of having a good long breather while Boston and Columbus pound each other may not leave them with the best on-ice result. Then again according to the Isle homers the long break isn’t an advantage so who knows.

  47. James G Avatar
    James G

Speaking of Boston, put the top line aside for a minute. If jekyll and hyde Rask is going to play like Dr Jekyll the rest of the way then Boston shouldn’t have a problem making it to the ECF. He was impressive last night.

Interesting Azzlander fans are making excuses about “bad ice” — as if the 2019 Islanders are the 1997 Red Wings.

But a cursory Google search finds Islander web blogs ran by fans chastising the Pittsburgh Penguins, most notably Evgeni Malkin for complaining about the “bad ice” at the Mausoleum for “making excuses”….

Meanwhile, aren’t these same fans making the same excuses for their own flawed team now that the shoe is most certainly on the other foot?

My thought for today- We’ve been talking for a year or so now about ‘the Boston model’ and how Gorton wants to follow that model and how they really turned it around quickly etc etc.
The best thing that team did was drafting Pasternak and having him become what he is. Without that top line they’re still a very good team with a couple of older star players but not over the top IMO.
Personally, I think the Rangers with Kakko (or JH) are a lot closer to that model.
Although, I was thinking about it and had to laugh because there’s a nice chunk of that roster that some of the New York fans would instantly dislike if they were Rangers. Danton Heinen, Charlie McAvoy in New York? Good chance they’re looked at as over hyped.

  52. Karl Hungus Avatar

KH- Don’t get me wrong, I’m not attempting to stir the pot with those comments. If anything just want to put it in perspective. Sometimes it seems like certain piece don’t fit and then once you sprinkle in some top line talent things fall into place a bit. I doubt there’s a single team that doesn’t have at least 1 or 2 players that would raise the Blood pressure of some fans in NY. But the ones in Boston are part of a squad that’s getting it done right now.

  55. James G Avatar
    James G

Sounds like Rykov isn’t agreeable to the terms of an entry level contract at the moment. Wonder if that makes him expendable at the draft?

  56. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

Funny about Lehner — ask any Islander fan throughout the season about Lehner and they would simply smile and say “yeah, he’s god”

But that comes from a team who really hasn’t had a legit winning goaltender since Kelly Hrudey.

But James you do bring up a great point.

We act as if in a bubble, where we are the only NHL team carrying and paying dead wood…

Worse – we could be Tampa with Callahan. (Ducks)

  59. simonkimbrell Avatar

  60. James G Avatar
    James G

Admiral also to your point- because I haven’t brought it up yet because I’m still kind of working it out in my head so bear with me-
At least Tampa is somewhat balanced aside from not having physicality in the line up.
In looking at the TO model I see a trap many teams can fall into. You have a new GM that’s got a high profile NHL coach but undoubtedly wants to bring his guy in sooner than later (Keefe) and you have a roster that’s built “backwards” in the sense that the old school rule of thumb is build from the net out.

Successful teams have crazy depth at center these days. BUT I think there’s more to it. Committing a ton of money to your forwards without the balancing act really does prevents you from having a well rounded roster. I think there’s a “right time” to pull the trigger on the center depth unless you’re blessed by draft picks. and it isn’t until a bunch of other pieces are in place so to speak. In TO case oodles of that cash up front is tied up at center. So they’ve kind of painted themselves into a corner a bit. You have the Marner situation after signing Nylander because you needed to a hang onto him. Kappanen is a nice player but will probably be too expensive to keep at some point and you still need to fill out a bottom six and a couple D-men?
It’s a bit of a mess as they go forward. Meanwhile the window is open and they don’t have the defense or goalie capable of making it past the first round. Now the easy reaction is ‘well just start making trades of F for D.’ Not always that simple. Especially when Dmen acquired in trades have pretty hefty contracts themselves unless you’re adding 5-6 guys.

I want to tie that all together and bring it back to having to have some cheaper secondary guys like Boston has but I’m out of steam lol. Told you I didn’t have it organized in my head yet : D

I watched the TSN video report on the hearings with Bettman in Canada. I like physical play. In fact, that has been the best feature of this year’s playoffs. But for him to deny the science on head injuries and CTE, for him to say that fighting still has a place in the game (although the instigator rule has been discarded by refs) and that if head hits were eliminated that all hitting would disappear is silly. USA youth hockey has a head contact penalty and the physicality is definitely still there. In some leagues, head contact is a 2+10 penalty. This is just so disingenuous, and an effort to escape responsibility for the NHL turning a blind eye to head shots……including gutting the NHLDPS after Shanahan had it off to a good start. It paints a picture f the NHL owners being a bunch of Brian Burke-like neanderthals who romanticize the play of guys like Scott Stevens. When he took Paul Kariya’s head off in the 2003 finals, the Ducks GM Brian Murray’s comment after the game was that Kariya needed to stop complaining and keep his head up. Kariya forced a trade out of Anaheim after that, and his career was ended as a result of multiple head injuries. IMO, if the NHLDPS was allowed to actually punish head shots appropriately, this would be an improvement. I wuld like to see the US Congress have like hearings and let Bettman go on record there as well. Perhaps legislation will be the only way to fix this.

Interesting tidbit about Canes – Azzdancers series; both teams no longer with their leading scorer from the past 6 seasons and made it further than they have in a long long time so top level talent is not the answer; takes a full team to advance and hoist the hardware.

Can’t understand the logic about Chytil, SN. What’s the point? We think he’s not going to be very good but we’re going to trade him somewhere that they have high hopes for him?
And then I guess we get a king’s ransom and he never turns into a player that could really help this organization over the next few years?
I think the 19 year old kid with the skill should get a little longer of a look on a team with a bit more structure and capability. Unless of course someone really is stupid enough to trade you a franchise player who is in their 20s for him but I think that’s just something that’s been crafted here to be able to say “I’d trade Chytil”

Does getting the 2nd overall pick in this draft make it more likely for the rangers to do an offer sheet that requires first rounders as compensation?

  104. James G Avatar
    James G

Wick, not sure if having a top 3 pick means as much as the overall success of this draft. I think if they wind up with three quality first rounders this season it could make it tempting. It depends on the player being offer sheeted too.
Beyond this summer I think a lot also depends on how some of these young guys perform. Including the ones they take this year.

  105. James G Avatar
    James G

Wick, quite honestly I think it’s just about how someone interprets another poster’s comments or questions.
For instance, in this case, when SN said he wondered what the market was for Chytil I didn’t think he was barking that Chytil sucks or this and that. Just that he’d be curious what the market would be for a sophmore who showed skill and a poor display of NHL capability beyond his offensive talent.
He’ll probably be a good player. I’m more concerned with whether he’s a good fit. For example if he and Kravtsov have chemistry or if he fuels a PP at some point etc. On the other hand if he shows himself to be a defensive disaster like Hayes was in year 2, is he too much of a liability for a team that plays Quinn’s style or with a roster constructed with too many offensive Dmen.

giving up 4 number 1’s would be as bad as it gets. add it to 10 million cap hit. talk about putting all your eggs in 1 basket. if we’re that foolish to go that route i hope the other team is foolish enough to match to save us from ourselves.

Also, Not sure Point is the guy I’d want to tandem with Zibanejad. The point production at center would be excellent. Just not sure they balance each other out too well. slowing the game by things like putting back in the red line for 2 line passing purposes would be a major setback to the league.

none of the RFAs available this summer are worth four first round picks and that is the only type we can really offer now given the Fox deal.

Let’s see if Boston makes it past the second round before giving them too much credit

  122. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

If they draft in the first round for four more years to you think they come up with one Brayden Point? Just asking.

Point and company also went down meekly. Toronto not as meekly but with all that offensive talent they’re done too.

Plus it’s not just the 4 picks (although that’s huge). it’s 10 million plus cap hit on top of that.

We’re seeing this years playoffs. So many of the “best players” are already home while the seemingly best teams keep playing.

if I was Tampa and someone offer sheet’d Point I’d take the compensation if it was 4 1st rd picks plus the cap room.

  125. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

so would you rather have an older Panarin or Point?

  126. Alex Avatar

I’d rather Panarin plus the 4 picks than Point

  127. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

and that’s how we’re going to judge players, then is Barzal better than Matthews?

  128. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

I’m not sure i disagree on Panarin and the 4 picks over Point.

Bettman nonsense is all about protecting the stars of the league. He will continue to tweak and create new rules to give them every opportunity to shine hassle free.
Then the refs pull a 180 in the post season. He’ll have to work on that next.

For what it’s worth Eliminating the clutch and grab and then eliminating the role of the enforcer May have opened up the game for stars but it made the game faster and that’s more dangerous than any staged.

And Carp, I’d rather have Point over Panarin. No question about it. I just think they’d need some snark at 3C and 4C if that was the case.

Pete I’ve never heard anyone make such a statement regarding a second rounder and a conditional second rounder lol.

“Well we would have had an opportunity but you know….we gave up that second round pick…real shame” 😂😂😂

I mean this team will have made 6 or 7 first round picks in the last three years by this summer. How many more until it’s safe to trade a R1 again? 3 years? 5? 10?
Not to mention out of those 7 most here already think that 3 or 4 are in the range of mediocre to just decent at their best.
Point is a little better than decent, ya know?

By the way don’t be surprised if they select another D man or two similar to Dylan Mcilrath this year. Can’t have six offensive D playing at once. Or four or five for that matter.
At least Fox should be an upgrade over at least two of the current bunch

when they were younger/healthier both Girardi and Staal were good in their own zone. Staal would match up pretty well vs AO. As was Kevin Klein in the d zone. To me all 3 were better types to go for than McIlrath types.

just stating the reality of what type of offer sheet we could make now that has any chance of not being matched. anything that requires next year’s second seems to be off the table because of Fox. wasn’t a judgment on the fox deal itself (though as stated i do think we bid against ourselves).

Gorton would have to be convinced the Rangers are playoff team the next four years and enough of his recent picks will pan out as will Point to make such a trade. Also it’s taking a 12-15m a year deal for 7 years before a team like tampa walks from Point. Tampa can also get clever and offer a shorter deal with less AAV given the tax savings. Seems too steep for Point and even more so for Marner given he is a wing.

  145. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

McDonagh was too. And Stralman Brothers Band. …
But I think they’re counting on Hajek, Lindgren, Rykov to be defensive players of the future. … and sure they’d like to add a youngish veteran who knows how to defend.

Can’t do one involving the 3 pick either since both 2 and 3 are embargoed due to Fox deal

The Gerund was always a chart boy favorite on the Rangers. I wonder what his numbers were like in Columbus. Did Torts turn him into a shot blocker?
