An AV redux would be a lock to gum up the works.
Please no Bazooka Joe!
Perhaps a 12 foot MSG bronze of AV chewing gum and picking at his wedgie.
Let’s Go Maple Leaves!
Screw Boston!
Go Leafs G… Oops.
I wouldn’t be too upset if Toronto won the whole thing. I kinda dig that team.
Steve Yzerman
Fukc the Bruins!!!
Fukc the Leafs!
Go Leafs Go!
Boston trying to play fast, Toronto just playing fast and faster…
Leafs D sucks
As fascinating Toronto offence is, their defense does not look sufficient for the playoffs.
Loose change in my pocket,
future in my hand.
I wanted to watch Leaves vs Bears but I can’t tolerate Emrick so put the other on. Probably swtich to the Denver UMass semifinal.
There was an avy at Tuckerman’s Ravine this afternoon, one dead. Be careful out there boys!
GOAL! 2-1 Leafs.
Where is everyone Olga?
I’m here, Bee’s look slow!
Gone fishing?
More like gone drinking.. Thursday night!
Goal, Leafs Goal! 3-1
Head coach for Denver is only 29
There is no discussion as to what we’re going to do with Lundquist next year. 8.4 m/per yr is a lot to carry for 2 years. He picked out about two-and-a-half 3 years ago and it’s lost at least 12 to 13 games for the Rangers this year
Peaked out sorry
Ask LQ to fall on his sword. These Sather contracts continue to burn.
TJ Oshie has some evil eyebrows when he’s POed. Geez
That Makar kid has wheels for a defender
LR I started a buyout discussion a few days ago. A few of us think its the thing to do but don’t think mgt has the balls
EN Goal. 4-1 Leafs take game 1.
Canes 2 goals. 3-2 Caps. Plenty of time.
UMass was down 1-0 up 3-1 early second.
Anthony from your post earlier- I love Cam Hope. Intelligent. Well spoken. And a cap guru to boot..also a very successful lawyer in Canada.
Had the pleasure of an hour long interview with him one summer years ago when I was in school for sports management. One of the cooler experiences at msg for sure.
Yay, gord miller calling flames game. Second favourite behind bob cole
Man, Calgary is deep up front.
Matthew tkachuk is awesome. Give me 23 of him
Tkachuk=beast
To think he could be playing shotgun to mcdavid right now
Sam Bennett has the best moustache EVER
That Calgary goal is all on Hathaway, great forecheck.
Great effort on the goal by magniapane
Jpp broke the blog
Was at the UMass game. Makar can fly and has great offensive instincts. Didn’t see him defend much.
But..but he’s a puck mover! Lol
In Hope (Cam) we trust?
Good morning, boneheads!
Boston- Toronto is going to become a nasty one. I was surprised how Toronto played physical and didn’t back off. Washington-Carolina was nasty already. Carolina has no chance though. I think Boston-Toronto is going to be a long one.
Cam Hope was a Cap/CBA guru. So is Gorton. But once it became obvious Gorton would succeed Sather, Hope left. Gorton was promoted to the Assistant General Manager in 2011, Hope left the same year.
If what we need is a president that will toss aside a franchise player maybe we should hire Dave Checketts? Too soon?
Checketts on Hank: “how long do we have to pay for….wait what the hell are we paying for?”
Was thinking about the scenario where they draft Kakko. Theoretically we’d be stacked on the right side once he and Kravtsov are here. Not so much on the left. Very good chance Lias or Chytil play wing on the regular next year. May also see Kravtsov tried at center.
Probably a good chance Strome plays center at 2C unless they move him. Wouldn’t mind a third line of Howden between Lemieux and Ferland. That’s the kind of trio that can give a team fits.
Ferland seems like a logical choice to replace Vesey if the money is right, no?
figure Ferland is seeking in the high 2s to 4ishm a year for 4 to 5 years with Vesey likely staying under 3 on a 1 or 2 year deal, so you could make it work, but then don’t you need to ditch Names at $4m/yr as he would then be what a 4th liner?
Some team is going to pay Ferland waaay more than he is worse and I would prefer it not be the Rangers.
To me it’s a no brainer that vesey, fast, and Namestnikov are gone…or should be.
Pete, Namestnikov is essentially a fourth liner playing up in the lineup. he scored 11 goals this year. His value lies in the ability to kill penalties drive to the net and provide energy. You should be able to replace that contract with a much cheaper player that could provide virtually the same thing for much less. Ferland can give you 20-20-40 on a consistent basis and has that physical edge and strong skating that Quinn seems to want more of. That’s my take anyhow.
Yes, ferland will come in between probably $4 mil per to Wilson $$$.
Don’t see him getting more than Wilson and probably less because, well he isn’t Wilson.
Anthony channeling his inner doodie with his ferland post
😉
Took the words out of my mouth, Wick. If you bring in a mid tier UFA (Ferland or similar) and assume that at least one wing from Hartford gets a promotion (gettinger?) I think it’s a decent upgrade. Fast has played a lot of hockey over the last few seasons and it showed prior to the thumb injury.
I mean alternatively if Ferland isn’t the guy there’s other options- Nyquvist, Connolly, Johansson. I just happen to like Ferland’s overall game more. but don’t want anyone’s panties to bunch while discussing different scenarios 🙂
Wicky
I totally agree with you 9:31 post, sayonara. Gorton should also find a way to move Smith, Staal, and Shattlesskirk, not any easy assignment but necessary to fix our back end.
The Minx will add this, if the Rangers end up selecting Jack Hughes, Mr. Andersson’s days are numbered as a Ranger.
It’s just funny to me that some people (not Anthony) were okay with paying Hayes 6-7 million a year for 50 point seasons over the next 7 years but Ferland who can give you around 40 and play a much more physical game for around 4 million would be way too much.
Panarin a Panther yet?
Gettinger is slower than Lias; prust saying…
.
They need some veteran leadership in the room next year to serve as counter balance to Queeg, I mean, Quinn.
.
did anyone else see ’15 R1 #4 pick Mitch Marner steal game 1? But Eichel was the consensus #2 that draft; because that’s what the media said…
.
’15 draft; Bruins had 3 R1s 12-14 and struck out on 2 of them with only Louis DeBrusk’s kid as a player and then the Azzdancers took Barzal at 15.
.
Go Stars, Go Blues
I have another interesting name for Rangers President – one that has an Edmonton connection, just not with Slats. Former Oilers coach Ralph Krueger is stepping down as President of the Southampton Football Club in England. Krueger received high marks for coaching Team Europe in the last World Cup of Hockey.
Imagine all the fun we would have with the Freddy Kruger references which would then evolve (or is that devolve) into Freddy Got Fingered references 🙂
In speaking with Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Krueger gave an interesting viewpoint on how a team’s front office should work.
“’What I see as the ideal model now, is a really strong triangle, for me the triangle of the head coach, the general manager and the president in a professional sports organization. If you get three people that have different strengths to fill each other’s weaknesses, which we all have, and they work in unison toward a goal on a regular basis, that for me is the basis,’” Krueger said. “’It took me a few years to really get that right here.’’’
Isn’t the President just a pointless layer of management to sit between the owner and GM? Why do we need that?
Isn’t the answer obvious, Rob? To build a wall….NO POLITICS!!!!!
Kreuger? He couldn’t smooth a silk sheet if you had a hot date with a babe.
Some house cleaning involving all things Rangers.
1. Georgiev and Namestnikov will be playing for Team Russia in the World Championships. They will join THE and SkjeL (still funny) who are representing Team USA.
2. John Gilmour was named to the AHL’s first All-Star Team. That will come in handy as he becomes a free agent.
3. Future former Ranger Jack Hughes was named to the USA’s U-18 World Championship team – as has d-man Alex Vlasic. I want Vlasic drafted and paired with Freddy Claesson because duo would put opponents in a real pickle. Sorry, it had to be said 🙂
Speaking of Oilers, make Messier president but make it a figurehead position where he just shows up to ceremonies IMO
James, to be clear i’m not saying i’m against the idea of bringing in ferland even if it’s closer to 4m a year but to me you’d have to cut bait with Names to even consider it and likely Vesey (again no big loss in my book).
Wick, i’m also not a huge fan of Fast, but more so because of how he has been deployed over the last couple years. He is not someone who will get much of a raise so i’d have no issue if he is one of the 4th line wingers next year given he can play the pk and isn’t a complete waste offensively.
Now if you tell me they have two other 4th line wingers lined up who will each be paid less, then fine by me if we move Fast. I just don’t see that being the case and we also know the GM, coaches and players like Fast, which suggests he isn’t going anywhere
SN- again-just picking a name. Maybe Jake Elmer surprises people? Gropp? Newell? Wicky’s boy Meskanen?
Gotcha, Pete.
I think it’s especially tough to try to figure this stuff out in April. The picture will get clearer after the draft weekend and even clearer after July 1.
Rob, my dad ran into Messier at some restaurant last week and they talked for like 15 mins (mostly about Kovalev and kreider because those are my dad’s favorites), but not surprisingly Messier said he was very interested in the job and thinks he has plenty of experience for it given all his time in hockey!
Who knows if he is even being considered, but sounded like he would love the gig (I mean who wouldn’t).
Gotta root for my boy Ovi! Go Sasha Go!
Guys I’d have no problem with as the new Prez:
Yzerman
JD
Mess
Leetch
Gorton
Drury
Hope
Guys I want no part of:
Patrick
Anyone from Edmonton aside from Mess
Any former or current exec who saw the majority of their success in the 80s or 90s
Anyone who’s name rhymes with PAWNfield
Ferland, Connolly, Nyquist Johannsen,= running in place.
Hilary Clinton for team President!
JR: Is Messier constributionally eligible to be president?
The problem with Ferland is that (apparent) stinker of a season in 17/18 when he got the most TOI. I would not give Hayes 7 per, I don’t think anybody was. Six, ok as there has been positive progression in his game each of the past two years.
I would not bail on Namestoolong at this point. Yes, he’s over paid a bit but he has changed his game to fit the DQ system and I expect more offensively this coming year. He’s become a bit Brian Boyle-ish in some ways. That said, I won’t be shocked if they move him.
Fast is still under contract at 1.85. I don’t think they will move him but if they do, more likely to be in-season. Though this will be his last year, probably/hopefully on 4th line.
Rob, @9:57- that would be a “buffer” .
Mr. Cici“oh yeah, a Buffer. The family had a lot of buffers!”
James – Meskanen is an interesting case right now…if we get Kakko, Mescaline is the only other Finn we have under contract. Not to give a roster spot to another Finn just to make the kid comfortable, but there’s something to be said for giving the guy a contemporary to ease the transition.
There’s a lot of lackluster Finnish UFAs that we don’t need any part of (Lehtera, Filppula, Niemi) but one name that’s very intriguing would be Joonas Donskoi. Good depth winger with decent underlying stats that seems like he won’t be resigned in SJ. Paajarvi-Svensson is another guy. Both would be super cheap, but I’d prefer Donskoi.
BDL, who would you suggest they sign to fill out the middle? Panarin is going to Florida. So that whole thing is done with. I know from past chats you don’t think Lias or Chytil should be in the NHL playing the wing and I tend to agree. They’re supposedly going to move on from Vesey. Lemieux is a third liner. So who is comprising a formidable 2nd line?
I haven’t seen much of Meskanen aside from the pre season, Pete. I assume he will get his chance to make an impression again this year. Donskoi is more of a bottom six guy, no? I’m more concerned with the top six.
I mean listen, if it turns out that Kravtsov and Kakko are both going to earn a spot with the big club this year and that’s going to work out better than the Chytil saga then I guess they’ll have to shift one of them to the left. Who plays between them? Strome?
James,
Don’t be so sure on Panarin. I want at least one big UFA, and one solid UFA. Both up front.
Believe me, I’d be thrilled if I were wrong. Anders Lee or Skinner may be next best thing.
Let’s get a roaring fire going. Would you kick the tires on Voynov if you were Gorton?
I can see inside BDL’s mind:
Kreider-Zibanejad-Buch
Panarin-Pavelski-Kakko
Lemieux-Howden-Strome
rookie LW-Boo- Namestnikov
not that i think its possible but rather have Anders Lee than Panarin –alot cheaper and more of a power winger –then you have more flexibility to move Kreider for a young defensemen
Not bad James. I would flip Kreider and Panarin. No Kravtsov, Chytil, or Andersson?
Kravtsov, Chytil, and Andersson = bust? 🙄
I left them in the AHL where you wanted them lol.
I do not follow the logic of signing Panarin/Lee, and then trading Kreider. You sign those guys to add to Kreider. What young Dman are you getting for a rental player in Kreider? Sound like we just want to keep running on the hamster wheel.
Our D MUST be improved one way or another.
Agree Coos, but they don’t trade em away cheap. I think we all agree that there could be some addition by subtraction on D.
Staal and Shatts are NOT acceptable role models and, in fact, are terrible (on ice) role models for impressionable yutes.
Kreider will sign a cap friendly deal. The Minx has spoken!
I’d buyout Smith and leave Staal as a third pair guy. Shatty can be a 7th dman. You can’t move the organization forward while honoring those contracts and giving these guys substantial minutes. I mean you can, but how is that benefiting any of your younger players?
Very few teams (if any) will be looking to trade an established top pair D and if they did the cost would be astronomical (ie not just Kreider). So you likely have to target a current 2nd pair or guy in the AHL/elsewhere who you think can become a top pair.
Both approaches take good scouting and likely still be expensive to acquire (especially for guys already in the NHL).
So this will be a hard problem to solve near term and long term absent draft home runs
You guys really believe Lee, the Islanders Captain is going to elsewhere…?
Oh – wait…..
Or sign Karlsson and McQuaid and give everyone here a hearta tackyack-yack-yack you oughta know by now…
I guess the take from most people is this: You can’t move any of these guys without cap ramifications and there isn’t anyone that could come in to replace them anyhow.
I don’t agree with that. But we’ll just have to wait and see. I’d be very surprised if we see the same d we saw get off the ice in Pittsburgh a few days ago.
James, Staal is the guy to buyout since Smith can be stashed in Hartford. That being said I don’t think it’s all that likely they will buy anyone out, let alone Staal.
Buyout Staal, stash Smith, keep Shattenkirk. More likely is all 3 are back. Smith as a 4mill a year 4th line LW. Staal as 6/7, and Shattenkirk as a regular.
Trade Staal to the Wild. The Ent can finish out his career with his brother who is partially responsible for his declining play. Eat half his salary and take whatever Fenton will give Gorton in return.
If Panarin goes elsewhere I bet they go after Karlson (assuming still around). If his ankle is in one piece he’d still be our best defenseman for the foreseeable future, just obviously the back end of any such deal is scary
Shatty, even in his stumbling dotage, is preferable to Staal. At least he can contribute on O and is not useless over the blue line.
Jettisoning the other Staal (and Stralman) was the action of two or more dimwits putting their heads together.
I think at forward I’d start with….
Zibanejad, Kreider, howden, Lemieux, strome, Buchnevich (no particular order)…
That’s 6, then one of (at a minimum) kravtsov or #2 pick… so 7
Rangers probably add 2 free agent forwards…9
I trade one of lias or chytil to help the nhl roster on D (by addition or subtraction) so that makes 10
If they don’t trade one of those guys, and/or both the #2 and kravtsov make it you’re at 11 or 12.
Let’s say both kravtsov and #2 make the roster…11
I think if they buyout some one it’s staal (cap hit wise, both staal and smith are similar and shattenkirk is a no go due to $$$$) so is smith your 12th forward?
Just speculating
Karlsson was studly in game one of that series
Messier I could see as president. I think he could do great with that. He spent a bunch of time with Sather years ago as like special asst or something. I also think he wouldn’t mess with Gortons plan too much. Heck, he can’t do any less than sather has over the last couple years.
I am surprised that Mess never got into the coaching ranks. He would be awesome behind a bench. But he never “paid his dues” with taking a lesser job first to learn the ropes so to speak. Could’ve been an asst coach or something. Or try so AHL time like Beuk.
Also, I would not be shocked at all to see the rangers in a deal one if the young centres for nylander…just a hunch
Mess believes in starting at the top, or at least close to the top. He’s the franchise face, much like Mickey Mantle or Tom Seaver or Ted Williams was. None of those 4 ever likely to be top anything except what they were.
Cooscoos
agree on Stralman (especially bringing in Boyle which made things worse).
couldn’t disagree more on E Staal. Minny has done nothing in post season (he hasn’t either) since he went there.
also disagree on M Staal vs Shatty. Shatty is far worse.
Wrong, but thanx for playing.
Ouch
Wicky
Very interesting, I was thinking the same thing last night watching the leafs & bee’s. The Leafs need to make a move to sign Marner. Andersson, Pig oink, & VC.
Like Anders Lee and think he would replace much of what Kreider brings and can do that more consistently. If thats the case then Kreider trade can bring in defensive upgrade …. doubt Lou lets Lee get away though
getting an inkling that Coos does not like Staal
I’d be fine with Lee, but I’d like him and Kreider on the roster.
Lee and Kreider would be great …but expensive …still have to address the defense though
Wicky,
I agree about Nylander.
If Anders Lee came to the Rangers he would be taking his life into his own hands with rabid Islanders fans. It would become a worse sideshow than it already is in games between NYR & NYI.
You thought Tavares had it tough?
Speaking of D…zadorov makes some terrible decisions in his own zone and Girard was just physically dominated last night.
How it feels watching so many former rangers in playoffs.
http://tinyurl.com/yy2xcqw8
Notice many of the “favored” teams lost game 1 :
Tampa, Boston, Nashville, Winnipeg.
(Pittsburgh is overrated IMO, secondary to goaltending, which is essential in PO)
The thing of it is, they’re light on the left side and preparing to move forward without Vesey who is another LW. Therefore, to sign a LW and trade your best LW does nothing for you in terms of balancing out your lineup. Even if they did get Panarin (he’s FL bound) you’re still a one line team with a third liner playing on the 2nd line in the LW spot unless you’re doing the Chytil nonsense again with him or another kid which is even worse than just playing a third liner.
Best case scenario, solidify the top 9, get out of 1 of the 3 terrible contracts on the back end and bring back McQuaid or even a short term deal for Lovejoy. Just someone who can play the right side and actually defend.
Then you hope that someone like Keane or Fox (hi Beezle) if they were to trade for him shows you something.
The sad reality is that there isn’t a worse bargain in the NHL than a ufa dman. you have to overpay no matter what and most of them don’t play their A game beyond 30 years old. Best bet is some home grown players.
Azzdancer fans? Which ones?? The ones in Wrong Island in round 1 or Crooklyn in Round 2??
Where are we getting the money for all of this. Kreider at 6 is great. Kreider at 7 puts a different level of pressure I don’t see working out well
But
Panarin-Mika-buchneivch/kakko
Kreider-nylander-kakko/buch
Lemeuix-Howden-kravtsov/andersson
Looks amazing
Is this the time of day to bring up the Bag of S is signed for 2 more seasons?
TWO MORE SEASONS!!!!!!
The thing is when I’m writing out the depth chart, you realize there are just too many forwards. Where’s strobe, andersson, chytil? Where’s a Brian Boyle, where’s a ferland?
The rangers weren’t expecting a winger out of the draft and suddenly if it’s kakko and they want to be in on panarin and keep Kreider. And bring in a veteran team guy like Boyle and you loved strome’s season and andersson/chytil.
Too many guys
It’s the same on RD.
You got deangelo and pionk
Then you got Fox, right?
Talking trouba long term (whether as trade or FA)
Karlsson?
Shattenkirk?
Really hoping Strome stays in thier plans …still 25 and versatile..thinking he would sign reasonable deal to stay here beyond next year
SN
could be worse
could have
Lucic 4 more years
Ladd 4 more years
Kesler 3 more years
D Brown 3 more years
J Carter 3 more years
just a few off the top of my head that last over 2 years
Fat no on both pionk and deangelo being here next season. That’s a big problem on D…no D.
I think shattenkirk is tradeable but I don’t think they do it.
Staal is, sadly at this point, is better in the d zone than skjeL, pionk, deangelo for sure.
Shattenkirk, skjeL, staal, and smith don’t have great contracts.
None of the current righty d men are good on D, shattenkirk is the best of the 3 in his zone…think about that.
The rangers have two relatively solid in their own zone lefty d men in Hajek and lindgren. SkjeL sucks in his own zone. Only way he looked good was with McQuaid….think about that too.
At this point to improve the d, you have to at a minimum buy out staal and get rid of pionk.
IMO, your minimum acceptable D for next year has lindgren, Hajek, skjeL, shattenkirk, deangelo, and a righty d add via free agency or trade plus either use smith or another guy as #7.
Personally I’d dump shattenkirk or deangelo also and I could careless which one. I’d base it on if I needed additional cap space or not.
JPP, we are a lot of moving pieces away from having too many forwards and no way we have too many righty D to the extent any kind of upgrade becomes available.
All three of our current righty D are mediocre at best, with perhaps Tony D having some future upside if he can stop being a punk. The swede we drafted last year is at least a year away and wouldn’t be surprised if two years away.
Will be interesting to see how Leafs play out a Nylander trade-expecting full value based on his two previous seasons (pass in my opinion) or accept lesser return to get him off the books (interested to a point). However if I am the leafs choosing between Ranger young centers, it’s Howden I would demand and would still need another good piece even under scenario where they are willing to accept a little less. Don’t see them having a need for Chytil and neither he nor Lias have enough value to be the centerpiece of a deal.
Why do all of you have Fox on the roster? What are you giving to the Hurricanes for the right to negotiate before 8/15/20? And why do we want another offensive defensiveman? JPP I’ll make the same offer to you that James turned down. A nice fox in a used Amazon box. Options are buckshot or tire tracks. No prime delivery, sorry!
Dangelo I think can stay. Shouldn’t cost too much
6 or 7 mil for Kreider. Not sure the 1 mil extra is make or break territory for this team.
Especially with all the vets gone
I mean if 1 mil extra is too much than how we’re people talking about using our cap space to take on dead weight contracts earlier this year. Talk of cally and bobbyryan?
I’ll kill two birds with one stone for you guys….
You want a Finn to play on the team with kakko (hypothetically), you want a righty D (we all do)?
Rasmus Ristolainen
Before this year, I thought they could target Draisaitl. That definitely is not happening now. Not sold on Nylander…..for what TO would demand. I am not convinced that the young centers the Rangers have will be good enough, but I also think we do not know yet and it would be dangerous to bail on them.
Wicky hope you are right on Shatty but don’t know if he’s tradeable….defensive liability getting slower and slower….. no one is gonna be interested despite any offense he may bring
I’m not sure Toronto has demands like some think considering their cap situation.
They are not giving him away, but I don’t think it’s going to be a kings ransom either.
That’s the point Pete.
Moving pieces. Movable pieces
Bc of too many forwards
BobbyO
Re shattenkirk. I’m not sure in all honesty if the organization wants to get rid of him. My guess (pure speculation on my part) is they want to give him one more season.
The reason I think he’s still tradeable is look at what people here speculate that karlsson is going to get for a contract (I don’t think he’s going to get what some think he is). Shattenkirk is not karlsson but at 6.5 per for 2 more years for a righty d man that can still put up some points (probably more with a bit better teammates around him).
I don’t think every team is lining up for his services, but I think it’s feasible he can be moved.
Wonder if the flyers would be interested in a swap of ghost for deangelo.
Have a feeling tony was a flyer fan growing up
Pete.
List on the forwards. List all the RD.
Add in the names of players the rangers have been linked to this summer in some varying degree and try telling me again the rangers don’t have too many forwards and RD
I mean I didn’t even name
Namestiknov
Vesey
Fast
Nieves
Gettinger
Shatts: “When they say ‘Bag of S’ on that bonehead blog, are they talking about you or me?”
Staal: “Can’t be me.”
Just don’t think any GM would want Shatty Wick…best case scenario is they keep him and he plays better and improves trade value…but unlikely
BobbyO
It’s possible he has no value, it’s pure speculation on my part.
Wick I hope you right …best case scenario that they can move him
Coo at 4:27 – I just started laughing out loud to myself in my living room
Shattenkirk sucks. When he could score 50 points you dealt with his defensive suckage. Now he sucks at both ends of the ice.
Actually, he’s like mega maid. He’s gone from suck to blow
It’s very hard to give DeAngelo a fair shake when you have both of them playing on the right.
Risto would be a miracle. Just like Trouba.
Isn’t trouba an rfa again?
A rfa
He is Wick. And supposedly the Jets may not want to get into another contract dispute.
Beezle hates Adam Fox…
Wick, right the first time. keep it at “an”
Trouba-Risto would be quite the fantasy come true as a first pairing
NEW POST
