Youve only got to look on the tankathon website to see we are actually most likely to draft 7th even though we’re currently in the #6 spot. But it’s all possible, apart from 4 or 5 or anything later than 9
Good morning Boneheads welcome to Monday! Someday, somehow, luck will come our way and the ping pong balls will land in the Rangers favor. It just has to happen right?
If the pick is not one or two, they should trade it for an established good, young player.
Brooks thinking the Rangers targets this summer are Panarin and Hayes. Also gave some thought to the young players, playing together on Hartford.
I like Hayes, more than most people here, but I would go in a different direction. I would go after a center with more offense in there game than Hayes.
Hayes probably too expensive for his production but Uncle Larry wants page views so he was going to put either Zucc or Haze in his piece.
Gorton sounded neutral on Kreider, but he is never one to show his hand anyway. Words and Deeds with Jeffrey.
They need a McD type deal for the backline in the worst way.
Funny, watching Howdy in this last stretch it seemed his Defense worsened and his Offense picked up.
.
Lias has some legit snarl to his game, will need to learn how to scrap or at least do the jersey wrestle if he is going to play that game.
.
Not sure how they were able to string those 2 wins at the end without the Baker in the lineup.
Read that one, BDL. Too many moving pieces to plan that far ahead. He can target Panarin, but that doesn’t mean he is signing here. True with anyone else. You can’t just rely on what may or may not happen. But you can plan. Trading Kreider before this season starts almost assures you are not getting Panarin or anyone else similar.
Are we there yet?
next season:
Gone: The Baker, VC
Pick Ups: Bread Man, Skinner
Still Here: Bag of S, Shampoo Boy
.
Bread Man – DJ Zika – BF Skinner
Kreidsdale – Stomeo – Resting Butch Face
Pepe Jr – Howdy – Names
Smitty – Lisa Lisa – Jester
.
Shea – Sharty
Nogrins – Bev
Selma – TBD (Lone Wolf?) Would get him again just to see the first game v Habs
7D: Staalled

SN, Chytil retires? 🙂
Still waiting on blog breakup day report. What will Ilb, James, CCCP, RR2 be doing in the off-season to take the blog to the next level (or step-up as SkjeL is fond of saying)? Will the blog work with a specialist in September to increase speed and stamina?
Break up? Go Time Posts starting on Wednesday.
CCCP tossing out incendiary devices into Carp’s comment section…
Beezle
I tried earlier in his comment section…got nothing
The Baker packaged with Dallas’ ’19 R1 from the ascension to the WCF for Joel Lundqvist to ensure Hank has people he can talk to after games.
I commented one time, and one time only on Carps page. I came up under my wife’s name. Sittoo went crazy at me, thinking it was a woman on her turf.
I’m going to attend 37 weddings with Brendan Smith
BDL, it’s hard to see too many teams trading the Rangers a good established young player for what likely amounts to pick 6-9.
Top 3 picks have that kind of value (and more if top 1 or 2), but rare that 6-10 would.
you are asking a team who already waited for said young player to develop and prove he could perform at the NHL to give him up for a chance at another such player in 2-4 years time (at best).
Maybe Toronto would give us Nylander at that price but that would be for cap reasons and i’d rather not take on that cap hit if possible and wouldn’t be in any rush to do Toronto any favors
Toronto will need a lot of “favors” to beat Boston. That’s the one I’m watching when it’s on.
Among other things, we need a talented Irish kid with a chip on his shoulder.
Pete,
I think you answered the question you were asking. Teams in cap trouble, teams that have traded away first round picks recently, looking to replenish the prospect pool.
And how can you say you would not want Nylander, after all the time you have mentioned that elite talent was needed on the Rangers. He would immediately become there best forward.
A team I would keep a close eye on is Buffalo. They are going to do something. The something could be Eichel.
Toronto is going to fire Babcock if they go out early.
BDL – is Skinner re-upping with Sabres? Eichel is not a $10M per player. Soft as a baby’s bottom.
SN,
I think that may depend on the coach they hire.
We need Panarin, but is he really worth almost twice Kreider’s price? (Sign him anyway)
Panthers hire Quennville. Better than Philly I suppose.
Not sure why exactly, but something about Eichel that says “me, me, me…”.
Quennville looking for a sun tan and an unlimited supply of Pina Colada’s.
Yeah, Boughner was the problem in Florida. As much as Gallant was
So after tomorrow night the next excitement will be the draft? Are we rooting for a Winnipeg Tampa final and a WC final of Dallas Winnipeg? I have to get by bracket set up.
Did Florida reimburse Boughner for his Uber on the way home?
Quennville signing= kiss any hope of Panarin in NY goodbye. Panthers were supposedly coming in hot looking to get a deal done for him at the deadline. Now that he only costs money they hold all the cards – no state income tax, young competitive team and the head coach is the guy that coached him his first two years in the nhl. Wouldn’t be shocked to see Bobrovsky sign there too. If that happens they’ll be looking to move a piece from their current roster.
Great point about cap teams and trading with them.
I think someone here for the majority of the season has said gorton needs to be targeting them as trade partners due to cap issues.
So far today, with a team in need of elite talent, we rejected both Nylander and Eichel.
I’d take Nylander.
I do this for myself but given the effort, I pass on to the boneheads too.
Here are Hank’s stats when compared to goalies with 40 or more games (33 including HL)
Figures in () are for HL then high/low/median of the 33 eligible
#19 EV Sv% (0.919/0.938/0.896/0.920)
#28 PP Sv% (0.835/0.910/0.824/0.873)
#11 SO Sv% (0.952/1.000/0.786/0.933)
#8 SA/60 (32.2/35.1/25.7/29.7)
Remember, median = just as many above or below.
Unfortunately, I don’t have TOI split between ES and PP. However, as a team, NYR were #1 in PIM at 10.24 vs median 8.21. That does not directly translate to TOI as not all penalties are served in full. The big worry with HL is the short handed play – a drop of 84 pts vs 47 for the median.
(BTW, the median PK % is 79.9 vs NYR 78.2 and the distribution is pretty tight outside of the top 4 and bottom 2. On their 266 times short handed, NYR gave up 58 goals, median would 53.5. Median was 239 times shorthanded, taking less penalties far more important!)
Reasonable to assume NYR goalies saw an extra 1 min/game short handed compared to the median and that the extra 2.5 shots per 60 HL faced were probably short handed.
I don’t think an extra 2.5 per 60 is dramatically more which is a narrative many use when explaining HL. They may further argue that ‘but he faced 4X shots in Y games’ but that just serves to make other games far less – where were the shutouts in those games?
This is just my opinion of course, the Quennville signing in Sunrise is a bettman move to save the franchise and put cans in the seats. It’s no different than what he did to save the dirty birds (Crosby fix). The Minx has spoken!
I suppose you can solve some of the problem with paying more insurance, but big contract guys also have to consider huge death taxes in NY.
(On top of everything else)
wait, they are more likely to die in NY?
Hank was given more favorable starts by DQ in the hopes of getting to 20 wins. Don’t need any statistics to see that a 23 yo Free Agent first year ‘Belarussian’ outplayed him with the same D corps in front of him against higher quality comp in the second half.
.
Knowing Uncle Glennie was whispering in DQ’s ear about personnel decisions makes this scenario even more troubling.
More likely to die prematurely in Baltimore or St. Louis. Our AHL roster in Hartford , too, would be well-advised to look over their shoulders.
Agree James, Breadman out of the running with Q in Sunrise, beaches, and no taxes.
Hank would be worth keeping as a backup if he were 23 and getting $900 per season.
Ft Lauderdale / Miami is considered safe though?
https://media.giphy.com/media/gYkga3bZav66I/giphy.gif
OrF. To answer question. I am not rooting for winnepeg to win a series. Their RD1 to us is not conditional and would rather have the higher pick
Rooting for Dallas as long as Zucc plays enough games to turn the pick into a RD1.
An extra rd 1 even if number 31 is better than 50 something pick in RD2 so I would like to see TB win for our pick
Plus…even though I hate some of Tb players like gourde. I can’t turn off my rooting interest for guys like Girardi, McD and Cally. To a lesser extent JT but still liked his game when he was here. Stralman wasn’t a Ranger long enough for me to care too much about.
Hypothetically, would you guys include chytil or andersson in a deal for one of the 3 d men to remove their whole cap hit in the deal?
Yes
Yeah, probably.
I wouldn’t. Careful buyout over the next two seasons is a better way to go. Cap will not be an issue for them in next few season. One of the reasons is because you have young, cost effective NHLers to play for you soon. I don’t think it’s a good idea to give them up for that, especially the ones you’ve selected in the first round.
For me it would depend. If it’s for a specific reason/player, I would.
Just for the sake of getting rid of the cap hit, I would not. I’d just use a buyout.
Conversely, would you assume a dead weight contract to move one of the D in the bag of S (does that make them D-bags?)
Okposo and Ryan have too much term, but Horton from Leafs who need cap space in the worst way.
Wicky lean yes but… too often the NYR do trades that don’t fit into a bigger picture. Ask again post draft, don’t think something like that would happen before. The UFA market will also have better clarity too.
Better approach, SN. It’s just that teams in need of cap space wouldn’t be willing to take on another albatross contract
SN
Only way I do that is you you are trading bad contract for bad contract to address a team need.
IE rangers have young d blocked by staal, rangers need guys that can score I’d take a getzlaf contract.
For a couple of you with reading comprehension issues, I’m not saying it is a straight up trade but you move bad contract for bad contract in a deal.
I take a bad contract from a team if there are young nhl assets involved.
I wonder if RNH is going to be available?
Also if panarin ends up in Florida, I’d happily take huberdeau off their hands.
BDL, not ready to say Nylander would be the best forward on the team if we traded for him and don’t love his cap hit (just under $7m/yr). He has put 60+ points twice, but I don’t know enough to say if that’s his floor or ceiling going forward, especially if he isn’t playing with the likes of Matthews or Marner.
Not too many other teams in the Leafs situation capwise, with the exception of Tampa, but the guys you’d want from them they aren’t trading (ie Kucherov, Point, Sergachev, etc).
Real waste of Lias or Chytil if they are traded simply to clear out a contract with two years left and no obvious need to really clear that space out this year (next year you do a buyout)
something like Horton for Staal; Loafs get a servicable 3rd pair Dman; NYR frees up room for pups and some add’l cap space.
Toronto is F’d; cannot afford to have 4 forwards making over $10M, with Marner and Matthews joining Nylander and Taveres??
So we’d be swapping bad contracts, getting a young player and the other team is getting one of Lias or Chytil?
How bad is this contract we are taking on or mediocre the young player we’d be acquiring?
This team needs goal scoring, never thought this would happen but Skinner is the elite sniper on the market.
BTW – Carl’s Son rumored to be looking for $12M+ per
Nylander and Horton for The Baker and Staal w/ NYR eating $2M.
SN
I’m fine with that deal except I don’t eat the 2mil.
I think Winnipeg and to a lesser extent Calgary might have a cap issue as well (I could be wrong in Calgary). Edmonton is a bit of a mess with cap as well.
Sharks have some issues depending on what their pending free agents decide to do.
Of the top 16 teams Cap Space allocated to Defense, only 4 are not in the POs
NYR (7), Edm (8), Fla (10), Ariz (12)
Tyoma is getting ready for Rangers’ camp

You guys are trying to get rid of Chytil like he is already late 20th, overpaid player. You got a potential goal scorer that this team has been craving for for years, and you are ready to give him up. Why? Because he has defensive shortcomings at 19?
I’d be willing to explore what deal you can include Pionk in from that perspective. He seems to be the odd man out.
Beezle

I don’t think anyone talking about moving chytil or andersson in a deal is undervaluing either.
If they sucked, no one would want them included in part of a deal they were receiving.
I’d rather have nylander than chytil despite the difference in $$$$.
To my posted question earlier that I answered, I’d do it if it was to clear out space for a specific player that was being acquired, I would not get rid of either in a deal to just get rid of a contract.
Nylander (and Horton) for The Baker and Mr Pink is not a good deal for NYR? Have to give to get.
Based upon similar deals, Loafs will have over 50% of Cap in 4 players when signing Matthews and Marner to their big deals. Would prefer Marner over Nylander but so would they.
Something has to give.
I wonder if anyone questioned ovi or Crosby or mcdavid or any other high end player at 18 or 19 in the nhl as to whether they’d actually be nhlers or not?
If our team’s management is really questioning whether Chytil is going to be an NHLer, they should trade him immediately since other dumb GMs haven’t caught up yet. 😃
Can’t teach skill. Just ask Namestnikov. He has improved in his will and drive departments under Quinn. Wins one on one battles, more engaged. Hitting an empty net remains a big challenge
Careful Wicky, BDL doesn’t like comparing Huberdeau and Panarin. I’d welcome Hub with open arms. On the fence about Hoffman. Someone is getting moved if FL signs those two guys though.
As for Chytil I think you have to hold onto him and wait to see what he can do.
ILB, If and when they acquire Fox I think we’ll see Pionk moved as well.
Here’s my take on the cap stressed teams. Sign Marner to an offer sheet TO can’t handle and tell Dubas if he doesn’t want to lose him for nothing then he can match the offer and trade him to NY for a price. Unless that’s not allowed.
ILB?
Huberdeau-Chytil-Marner
*Ducks*
At the beginning of the year Pionk was outplaying DeAngelo, and Tony seems to be odd man out with Shattenkirk around. By the end of the year it reversed.
RE: Names. He and Fast combined are making almost 6 million dollars to play hard while not being able to produce points. Translation: Expendable.
DeAngelo’s comments about Quinn and his season was very telling. A bit of shrapnel towards AV too. I don’t think you can go forward with both those guys even after you remove Shatty.

This guy’s face is classic. It’s this Wtf do any of you know about anything. Guys sitting at home reading tea leaves. Get outta here.
Scram.
I’m Ken Holland
Scram
I like ken holland. He’s always informative
James,
Problem is that any offer sheet the Leafs couldn’t handle would be in the $13+m/yr territory and that costs us what 4 first round picks? Not worth the risk Toronto decides not to match as that’s too steep a price for just about anyone besides McDavid.
Wick, good point re Winnipeg (Trouba vs Myers is an immediate issue), not sure either re Calgary or what they’d be willing to move.
Edm is in trouble, but no obvious solutions on their end. They don’t want to move Draistl and can’t see anyone taking Lucic. RNH is a fine player, but can’t say a 1-2 of Mika and RNH is that exciting.
Finally, Chytil shouldn’t have been in the NHL this year, so not ready to write him off or say he can’t play one way or another yet. Same can be said for Howden to some extent, don’t think he showed he was all that ready for a fulltime role, but his floor is both more apparent (good 4th line center/fringe 3rd line center) and more likely to lead to a decent NHL career.
Lias was rightfully placed in the AHL for most of the year and may be best place for him next year (and Chytil) unless they are content with him being a 4th liner going forward
Ilb
You can teach skill, there are videos all over YouTube on how to improve it.
You can teach guys how to skate faster, ask Brian Boyle. You can teach guys how to be more explosive. There are hockey schools for skills etc a lot of places. There are skating coaches and schools to develop or enhance a players skating.
There are no YouTube video on how to get a player to play with courage or show some “moxie”. No videos on how to develop “will”.
Skills can be developed and improved, other things like will or intangibles such as courage some guys have some don’t.
Myers is UFA but they are ‘heavy’ on right side with Big Daddy and Tuba; neither are probably going anywhere.
They have Little (32), Wheeler (31) with lots of $$ and term along with Connor and Laine as RFAs
You can teach positioning, you can teach a guy how to position himself better along the wall and how to use his stick better in puck battles, you can teach a whole hell of a lot, but a guy has to want it, has to have that drive, that compete and desire.
Gorton better be paying attention to the Torontos and Winnipegs and Tampas of the league and how the league now works with contracts and young players.
Can’t box yourself in a corner where you have to do roster surgery to keep certain guys.
Have to have contracts expire at different times (an upfront lesson with all the expiring contracts the rangers have had over the last couple of seasons) and at different positions.
That’s where asset management is so important in the cap era.
Buffalo joining philly, Edmonton, Arizona, and Florida as poster children for how long term rebuilds… (cough cough losing) don’t work.
You have about a 2 year window of losing before you need to start going the other direction or you get in a hole you can’t dig out of.
Fortunately, gorton understands this.
I really thought this was buffalos year to sneak into playoffs
Especially with how good skinner played. And shero early and they finally seemed to have good goaltending early.
Shocked at how bad they finished down the stretch.
Guess making your non mcdavid 19 yo rookie Captain is not necessarily the way to go leadership wise.
Namestnikov, Fast, Andersson, Nieves, Howden, Brickley….probably forgot a few. They all should be glued to the TV watching skill improvement on YouTube all summer. We’ll have more than 10 25-30 goal scorers 😃
Need Kravtsov, Miller and this year’s first rounder all to be homeruns if these last two years were it for the “rebuild”.
Wick, you can type it as many times as you want, but yes young NHL and AHL players (like players at even lower levels) can be taught and learn they need to play a tougher game to thrive in the NHL. To think any coach would write off a 18/19/20 year old playing in the NhL for the first time in such a way is silly
you can improve someone’s skating (like Boyle) to a certain point, but a player either has innate speed or they don’t . Lias for instance is never going to be anywhere near as fast as kreider
Certain skills (like shot or passing) can be improved, but again a player either has good hands or they don’t. Kreider isn’t going to suddenly become Kovalev with a lot of hard work and watching youtube videos.
A player like Chytil for sure has to want and be willing to muck it up more, but that in and of itself is easy to change if he decides he wants to do so. Lias on the other hand can’t just decide the next game to be fast or Howden can’t decide he is gonna be an elite stick handler
Pete
You aren’t getting any of this unfortunately. No one said, least of all me, that he wasn’t going to be an nhl player.
I said, and still do that he doesn’t have onions and probably never will. That does not mean he won’t be a Nhl player.
There are plenty of nhl players that don’t have onions in the sense that I am referring to.
Thinking chytil is going to develop onions is the same as saying shattenkirk is going to become a shutdown d man. Players are what they are and there’s nothing wrong with that.
The only silly thing I’ve seen on here today is you inferring he was being written off by any one.
Pete
Re your 7:03
I don’t disagree. Certain guys that are “great” players or “elite” players will have unique skills that make them such. Don’t think I ever stated otherwise.
Unless I’ve missed something, the guy that brought about this whole convo is chytil, and last I checked he is not great or elite, but a skilled one zone forward (although you read some of the posts here and other places by fans and he’s first ballot HOF).
Point of this whole topic is guys can do things to improve “hockey skills”, desire, courage, and other innate “traits” however, are far less “developmental” and more inner fabric of a person.
You are stating as fact that 19 yr old Chytil can never have “onions” or play tough, i’m saying it’s way too soon to say that and i’m being silly? ok
I bet if you had thrown 18 and 19yr old Buch in the NHL he wouldn’t have been that different from chytil in this regard. just my opinion of course
Ilb
I’ll trade you lists.
I’ll send you a list of hockey skills schools and speed skating schools etc that I find on the internet and you send me a list of schools that develop a hockey player’s courage, will, desire, and drive from the Internet and we can then compare which one is more developmentally doable.
😜
Ok, your reading comprehension is silly…or just piss poor
You brought up “silly” with the last part of your 6:41, which I directly addressed in my response to you.
Now your just all desperate and making things up.
How about 18 year old Crosby or younger than chytil tkachuk, or Ovechkin …I can throw out player names too. Young players that were no shrinking violets…and to my point players, like people are just different.
And that’s ok.
Eddie Shore! Old time hockey!!

I hope Dubi fights JT every game
FG
That would be awesome.
Is there a team in the playoff besides Pittsburgh without a former ranger on it?
Calgary?
Carolina?
They have future former Ranger Ferland, a Staal and Tarrytown’s own Pesce.
Vegas, Dallas, Tampa, San Jose, Columbus, Winnipeg, Washington, Colorado for sure do
Preds and Boston do too
Toronto, isles, Calgary, Pittsburgh, Carolina don’t
St. Louis does
If my abacus skills are correct, 68.75% chance a former ranger gets his name on Lord Stanley after the playoffs
Draft Day tomorrow? I put in an extra supply of suds. Something cheap, like the results I expect.
Olga
Yep, can’t wait to hear all the whine to go with some beer lol.
You know that whatever they do it will be wrong. It’s the Sather Way.
Yep. And wherever they draft will be the worst spot.
Can’t believe we picked J. T. Miller instead of Kucherov in 2011! 🙂
‘The bill belichick of hockey’
Ha bravo panthers bravo
maloney before the final game. still talks a slow / cautious rebuild
talks alot about the young guys as well as some of the vets like shatty, henrik and staal
@CCCP: Hank is just below middle of the pack even strength. He sucks you know what short handed. He really only faces a couple more shots a game (on average) than others. NYR are hurt far more by number of times short handed than weak PK% Another year older makes paying HL 8.5 per to sit on the bench or worse, start 50+ games, is probably not the best use of that money at this time. But his hair is exceptionally pretty and ranks #1 among all players.
Good morning, boneheads!
What’s today? Ping pong balls in play?
I am just going to assume that they either fall down, or stay the same. Keeps the disappointment down.
Devils win 1st overall. Flyers move up from 10th to 2nd and Rangers fall to 8th spot.
Do they still perform the actual ping pong ball selection in a back room and just use tonight as the unveil?
If so, this league is still very corrupt; starts at the top.
Listening to Squeaky and the Capt’s podcast, almost fell out of my chair with the Staal love.
https://media.giphy.com/media/fB2hQGqXXPGpi/giphy.gif
I am not going to get worked up over the lottery draw tonight I already know the outcome. Bettman hates the Rangers, you all know I’m right!
I just realized something. Tennis is nothing more than Ping Pong that you play while standing on the ping pong table…
I hope Gorton found Dave DeBusschere’s jock to wear to the lottery tonight. They need something to bring them luck tonight. Of course even if they win OTBG may pick Patrick Ewing LHD from the Jamaican Roller Hockey league.
The offseason is the time of year where we’ll all be splitting hairs (and hopefully not each other’s heads) because of the passion and desire for them to do their best work in improving things. That includes a lot of player assessment and trade/signing /drafting decisions.
With that said I’m just going to agree with BDL on everything. We went back and forth most of the season but he’s angry this time of year.
Here’s the unfortunate thing about Chytil. If he plays and scores 80 points people will still dog him for being soft.
If he scores 40-40-80 people will just say he over achieved. wont even allow themselves to enjoy a home grown Ranger having that kind of success. They’ll just say “well, let’s see him do it again and prove it isn’t a fluke year”
No need to discuss what happens if he has a sophomore year similar to this one.
Basically what I’m saying is that unless Charles Lee Ray transfers Brendan Shanahan’s soul into Chytil during a lightning storm at a toy store, the kid is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t for quite some time…
For you really old guys who don’t know movie references– that’s from Child’s Play.
Gorton claims he has a good luck charm. I hope it’s related to the pay off he gave Bettman to pull a ball with the Rangers logo on it for 1st overall.
Let’s do a contest on guess the good luck charm.
Or would that be bad luck?
For what it’s worth, I have a gut feeling that we are due for a miracle and will win the 1st overall pick this year. Call me crazy or blindly optimistic but SOMEONE around here has to not be jaded while waiting for this draft.
Just something to keep in mind- Gordie admitted wholeheartedly that Kravtsov would have been their pick even if they had a top 3 pick last year…
I’m down, jpp. I still say it’s that briefcase full of money that he handed to Bettman at 3am somewhere in an alley down by Chelsea Pier.
I have a pretty pretty good idea what the good luck charm is gonna be. And although I am not a superstitious man, on the side of caution today I will not say what I think it is.
I will only say yea or nay once we see what it is
23.3 % chance of 30A sounds like a one in four chance to me. And 7.5% sounds like a one in thirteen chance as well.
I don’t mind our odds. And i disagree with brooks that this is a two player draft and the rangers miss out even landing at 3.
Gorton gave Bettman a handjob… you know, extra hand for the balls. Ping pong balls, that is.
I also am curious if we get to witness the ping pong balls or if it happens in a back room and is merely “interpreted” for the viewers at home.
The High-Mid-Low on The Baker:
High: Elite Goal Scorer, producer on PP, first line stud forward; 35-40Gs/70-80 pts
.
Mid: Solid producer, highlight goals with dry spells, PP contributor; 25-30Gs/50-55 pts
.
Low: Puck hog who is either unable or unwilling to play nice with others, Low PP output: 18-20Gs/40-45 pts
.
Lowest: Too many concussions from inability to read the ice; plays in KHL for majority of career. Opens hockey clinic with Pavel Brendl.
.
What is the assessment in 3 years at age 23?
Gorton needs a good luck charm? Maybe the person who introduced him to Slats
#jobforlife
Something to consider when talking about Chytil….
Alex Kovalev is a Rangers legend to many fans. The guy was one of the most talented players to ever lace up the skates in NY and never scored more than 58 points in a season for this organization. Hell, he never even had a 30 goal season.
Goes to show you what people will think of a player if he plays for your team during a successful era of hockey.
Waiting for the egg heads now…”did you just compare Chytil to Kovalev? but nerrrr nerrr derrr derrrr!! no! No! NO!”
Bettman: “ay Rangers fans. I got ya good luck charm right here!”
Rangers will be at 7th and will pick the clone of Lias Andersson. BTW, there are at least 4 active players by name Andersson in NHL, not to mention bunch of others with a slightly different spelling.
Rangers pick 3rd, book it!
Gorton’s good luck charm is sathers head on a pike.
I stick with my prediction from early in the season on chytil, he’s a decent nhler that scores in the 40s or 50s.
Wicky
If the Rangers pick 3rd that means I will be wrong, that’s hard to believe don’t ya think?
and guess what. If the rangers end up with 3OA. That pick decides the fate of this rebuild. No pressure right
At 3rd it is up to the front office and scouts to pick the right guy. It will be like they are picking #1OA and Hughes and kakko are not in the board. They will have to pick the right kid
Kovalev and Chytil is an ok comp. skill wise Chytil is the most skilled draft pick since Kovalev. Kovalev was a tougher player, even at 19, than Chytil. And Kovalev was a very good playoff player for the Rangers.
If Chytil became a consistent 40/40 guy, I think most would be happy about that.
Kovie was definitely tough. You had to be back then to have a career. I remember Kovalev getting flat out destroyed in almost every game by Wendel Clark in ’95 against the Nordiques. Guys like Chytil couldn’t last in the old NHL.
This infatuation of where Lias was picked in a draft without players that stood out compared to him is just silly and evidence that fans will find ANYthing to be negative about.
Let’s face it. Most of yous won’t be happy no matter who they pick and whether it’s at 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 etc.
We could draft Kakko and if he doesn’t do what fans what it’ll be “welp guess we found another bust”. We could have the first overall pick and take Kakko “shoulda taken Hughes”. Or take Hughes: “shoulda taken Kakko. it’ll haunt them for years”…It’s exhausting. Honestly.
Wick, I respect your take on Chytil. All I’ll say is that at 21 years old I looked at Marc Savard and said the same. Then he went on to be an 80-90 point player for two different teams.
Remember the time people freaked out about trading Duclair because he was going to haunt the Rangers for years and be a point producing beast?

James
I’ve never said he’s a bust or not going to be an nhl player. In fact I’ve said he would be. I said he’s not going to be an onion player and a couple people freaked out. He’s just not that kind of player and folks need to come to grips with the fact not every player is perfect.
the NHL – the only ‘major’ sports league that does not offer games the day after for nada on their cable channel.
Every media play is upside down; why not do the drawing in front of a televised audience for some drama and maybe even ratings? Why does it have to happen in a back room, regardless of who is present??
Decisions made in back rooms. Fascinating!
I don’t know that Chytil needs to become an onion player to be successful, be he is going to need to learn how to survive in the onion games. There were more than a handful of games this year that Chytil became so intimidated he couldn’t function on the ice. Quinn, to his credit, recognized it when it was happening and would glue him to the bench.
From the link CCCP posted it sounds like the drawing itself is complicated and would just confuse people. The way they show the results on TV is also more dramatic.
thanks, c3. and here I thought they just wrote the names of teams on a bunch of little papers and grabbed one from a hat in Bettman’s office.
Bdl
Exactly my point.
I figured they were little ping pong balls with team logos on them and Yolanda Vega would call them out as they popped up, but I guess not
Wicky,
I think that is the difference between Chytil being a 40pt player, and a 60pt player. Learning to play when the game gets rough. If he gets hot, teams will target him physically. Right now when that happens, he’s done. If he could play through it, he has a chance.
Why would it not be like that ROB. That’s exactly how it should be done, I mean right ?
I didn’t watch that often. Or full games at least. I listened on the radio a lot.
But the number of times I saw chytil stop dead in his tracks to avoid throwing a body check. I wasn’t dialed in enough to notice these games Bdl is talking about where DQ glued him to the bench cuz his knees were rattling, but I believe him
James – That is why I want the Rangers to get the 2nd overall pick because it eliminates the shoulda taken Insert Player – unless someone is higher on Cozens or Podklozin 🙂
Why would you do ping pong balls with team logos on them when you could do ::checks notes and squints:: 1001 possible combinations of ping pong balls labeled 1-14
I’ll use Zibanejad as an example. He is certainly not an onions player, but this year I thought he learned how to play in the onion games much better. His numbers showed it.
If they get the first pick, I agree with Brooks. Don’t over think it. Take Hughes.
Isn’t it obvious?
Jeffy’s good luck charm is Mike Hoffman’s girlfriend….
I dunno.
Just saying that chytil is the most skilled draft pick we’ve had since kovalev means he was a good pick at 21OA and we have to give him time. Look 50 pts isn’t anything to snivel at in this NHL, if the kid is a 3rd matchup nightmare putting up 50-60 against bottom 6s, I’m more than happy
On a Ping: I’m thinking – how amazingly fast Hank went from Hero to Zero in peoples’ mind. True, that ancient orient wise preverb saying: ” A favor which was done is not a favor anymore at all for now”. (In much wisdom is much grief, though…).
On a Pong: I was wanted, wanted and now overwanted (overwaited) Panarin for Rangers. Have a gut feeling -it’s not gonna be good for some reason. So, grab popcorn and watch…That’s what left for Rangers’ fan.
I’m picturing us 5-6 deep in ruskies and a Bulgarian rusk
Buchnevich
Kravstov
The goalie
Rykov
Panarin
And
Georgie
Makes the rangers attractive in the future to the next panarin and other UFA Russians
Kovalev was hands down the most talented Rangers player i’ve seen play for them and I’d argue one of the most talented players ever….BUT those talents didnt equate to goals and assists in a comparable way. So there were plenty of players that were and are better players, but more talented? I can’t think of any off the top of my head
Also for a good laugh go to youtube and watch Kovalev stick handle through multiple players in the offensive zone so that he could plant the puck in Darcy Tucker’s skates so he could elbow him!
When Russian players are good they are nice combo of skill and swag and they tend to have onions built in as wicky would put it
1- BDL calling out Lindy BowWow in the Post
2-Wicky picking #3 means another Russkie. Don’t we have enough of them?
3-This freakin bird is still bonking its beak on my windows. 8 days! Refuses to sign the CTE brain study release I left outside. Even the dog has had it and is attacking the window back. If only Chytil had this birds onions!
onion jam?
sounds like he has his brains…
It’s kinda crazy that torts/Dubi and all these ex-ranger bolts are playing the most important series of their lives against each other.
Pete,
That Kovalev/ Tucker play is still one of my favorites to watch.
Can we quickly call an end to the Jimmy VC experiment? 240 games; 50-40-90/-37
There are better options.
“Picking” the ping pong balls…
Man I hate wordpress… can’t use img tag. Try again:
Picking the ping pong balls
SalmonJoe personable, well-meaning, kind, but lack honest reportage. Listening to them all season, you would think slow, ill-positioned, contact-wary Staal was a pillar of Hercules.
Anyone have an update on how Hajek is recovering from his shoulder separation?
thinking Gorton sending/bringing Sather as his good luck charm tonight…. if by some miracle it works and they get 1st pick they should just take the center
What time is the ping pong show?
Panarin will be a Panther. Wouldn’t start listing him as a Ranger for next season
yea BDL, few players could even pull off what it took to manufacture that hit and even fewer would ever go to the trouble in the first place!
Chytil tried to have onions the last play of his season he pulled a Jagr and separated his shoulder trying to check
Watching SKA vs CSKA game 7 on KHL TV HD!
WINNING!
Bdl
Vibin’ re chytil
SKA!
D Moops ran a yearly ping pong tournament when he was here.
Even as Chytil attempts to throw a furtive ghost check, he , himself, gets knocked on his azz by his victim and sent to the hospital.
So to answer my own question:
The 2019 NHL Draft Lottery will be held at the CBC/Sportsnet studios in Toronto on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVAS).
8 pm is when the program starts, but looks like it’s booked for an hour on NBC Sports, so ping pong balls will be revealed at 🤷♂️
Thanks for nothing, punks.
It’s been a little while since the last time you made me go look up a words meaning, Coos. Furtive is good one. I may use it myself somewhere down the road.
If I recall from previous years, they reveal the lottery eligible picks backwards from 15-1. The clue for whether the Rangers pick in the top 3 is whether or not they are called in the 9-6 range.

Bettman: We rented the ping pong ball machine for the full hour and we plan to use it
Ernst & Young accountant: Return it after 9 and you don’t get your security deposit back
slightly more than 60% chance they move down.
Hire George Jefferson quickly. He’s movin’ on up.
Yeah, the Rangers are the 6th ranked team, but their highest probability pick range is 7-8 I guess because of the cumulative probability of one of the teams ranked lower than them moving up.
@SN Have to see your Ska with this, which is hopefully appropriate for tonight. Also RIP Ranking Roger (just recently passed)
Wick- wasn’t implying that you called Chytil a bust earlier. Was just referencing a young player I didn’t set high expectations for that proved me wrong.
So it makes perfect sense that a team below us will move up but the idea that we can do the same is completely asinine?
SKA is out
Shestyorkin lost game 7. Bust.
So the Rangers finished to low in the standings?
The Rangers have a 23.3% chance of moving up. Individually, each of the teams below us has a worse chance of moving up. But the odds of any one of the teams below us moving up is pretty high, better than 50% if I’m reading this correctly.
He did not enter the series until they were down 2 games. He won 3 out 5 starts.
Shanka shanka
James
I know. Didn’t take it that way at all. My response was in general, not directed at you per se.
Anyone know what time the lottery show is on tonight?
😉
Shesty Morgan is a bust!
Cooscoos
Maloney was pretty high on Staal as well
Devils will get #1 or 2…book it.
Capt Dave was sounding a little loopy on the podcast; using youth hockey Metaphors to establish context around professional player development.
It’s been a long season for everyone., including old #26.
I dare the Staal defenders to look at the advanced sdefensive stats for NYR. It’s actually worse than the Eye test.
Just encountered a really bad omen… had to stop for a turkey in the middle of my road 🙁
Yeah Dave has had some interesting comments this year about different players. Makes you wonder.
