That is a major bummer.
I’ve been watching the games but I fell asleep, woke up, looked at the box score, than the posts from last night, saw what happened and fell back asleep.
Now I’m waking up and remembering this happened. Major bummer
It does allow them to bring up lindgren and have a spot for him to play without sitting skjei or staal.
Let me guess what happened in the game though. Devils stopped competing after going up 2-0 and the rangers played to the end? If that’s what happened, that’s sxactly why the rangers will never bottom out. Quinn and the players play the game the right way, to the end, it lets them hang in games against better teams and allows them to separate themselves by the end of a game against bad teams.
Pete
They also insist on fielding a too competitive lineup JPP and really to no purpose this season when the goal was never to make the playoffs. They should have gone younger and less experienced last offseaon, not filled up on the Names, Spooners and then Stromes of the world who do nothing but keep the rangers above water.
I would not write Names and Strome off too abruptly.

Still disappointed at the lack of push back by the Rangers when they were attacked physically all night by the Devils. It was a meaningless game in a lost season. They turned the other cheek while Coleman and others were running at them all evening. Where was Lemieux? Does he think he is Patrick Kane now? Why did the dude that corsschecked Namestnikov and ran Henrik ever face a challenge from the Rangers? This seems to be counter to the stuff Quinn has been saying. They looked like the AV cheek turners last night.

We’ve been hurt standings wise (ie not being lower) due to being too healthy. Look at the Devils /Ducks and all their injuries. Also hurt by all the loser points we get. Still we have tied for 2nd lowest row. So our position is not reflective of how bad we are.
And it’s not Henrik (at least alone) that’s getting us extra points. Georgie has stepped up big time this season.
I was hoping to finish in bottom 4 or 5 as it seems there might be a drop off after 5th pick but the only way we pull that off now is winning a top 3 spot (ie luck).

Any benefit in calling up Gilmour to give him a last look at the NHL level or has that ship sailed? His AHL numbers are outstanding, but, I suspect he still can’t defend. He will probably walk this Summer.
The Rangers are continuing to work on bringing Vitali Kravtsov to New York so the 2018 first-rounder can spend time around the team and acclimate himself to NHL surroundings, but it is no sure thing that will happen, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation.
Though Kravtsov’s KHL team, Traktor Chelyabinsk, was eliminated from the playoffs last Monday, the 19-year-old’s contract does not expire until April 30. But even if a release can be arranged, the Rangers won’t sign him to an entry-level deal beginning with this season, for that would automatically burn the first year of a three-year contract.
An ATO (Amateur Try Out) that would allow the ninth-overall selection to play for the AHL Wolf Pack apparently is highly unlikely.
Kravtsov, who recorded 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 50 games and had an outstanding World Junior Tournament, is a candidate to be added to Russia’s World Championship squad.

Or
Were they going to trade everything not nailed down for assets and do a full on rebuild with some vets filling in for a couple of seasons and be at the bottom of the standings for a couple of seasons (bottom 5 of the league).

trading a 1/2 C and Raanta for 7th overall and Tony D is a rebuild move. It was done for cap purposes plus concern re Step’s speed. It was certainly done with way more than the 1st year in mind and I think they knew that playoffs that year was lessened when they made the trade.
You (seem to) choose to use the expression good asset management foe most of those moves.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
That deal has been well documented.
The first was because of the raanta inclusion not Stepan.
The rangers were given a list of roughly 5 players to chose from to finish it out (they chose deangelo, they were not specifically looking for him, he was the add in from the list).
It was done because they didn’t want to keep Stepan into his ntc.
Sorry it doesn’t fit into your narrative at all, but keep trying bud.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Let’s just say your ridiculous scenario was real…gorton should be fired immediately.
If they were starting a full on rebuild then, you don’t add shattenkirk via free agency after.
And if you are concerned about cap floor (they shouldn’t have been), then you don’t add salary via free agency (aka shattenkirk), you add it via trade from another team and get rebuild assets along with it.
Horrible way to go if that was the gorton “plan” and everyone should be petrified if he’s in charge of rebuilding anything and that was the first part of his plan.
CCCP
James Dolan Threw A Knicks Fan Out Of MSG And Reportedly Banned Him For Life Because He Yelled “Sell The Team” At Dolan. [Video inside].
Now, if you trade Zibanejad this summer for just picks and prospects before his ntc kicks in this summer, THAT would be a rebuild move.
Stepan was traded with nhl depth at centre because there was no reason going forward to pay Stepan 6+ mil with Zibanejad and hayes there as well. So, smart asset management to deal him before the ntc kicked in.
Alex
I already said that the Shatty signing was a big mistake. Teams do make mistakes in all situations, including in rebuilds.
Hopefully they make more good moves than bad.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
It was a mistake IF they were in the rebuild process then, but they weren’t so from that aspect it was NOT a mistake.
Now, as an “in general” signing mistake, that is a whole other story.
Pete
Issue is Wick that this season was clearly the year where the playoffs were never going to happen and Gorton still signed Names and Spooner to deals that were for too much money and too many years and then brought on a guy with another year on his deal in Strome (while retaining some of Spooner’s cap hit). That doesn’t even fit the rebuild on the fly narrative because they are all placeholders doing nothing but hurt draft position in a completely meaningless year. This is the offseason where such moves would make some sense for a boston type speed rebuild (which has yet to work for boston but i digress), this year not so much. Add to that the bungling of the development of Chytil (and Howden and Lias to a lesser degree) and I’d say this becomes a pretty lost year if we don’t sneak into the lottery or otherwise finish with a top 5 pick
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Guys, guys, guys….the rangers traded Del Zotto in 2014, 5 year rebuild complete.
That trade was the start of it, I tell you it was because it fits my narrative regardless of actual facts….

Pete
I’m am in 100% agreement with your post.
Thing is, what you and I think they should do is clearly not what they are doing.
They are trying to win as much as possible with what they have this season (not tanking and understanding that the playoff chances were remote) and are moving forward with the majority of the roster (unless they pull a crazy Ivan and try to go full rebuild all of a sudden) of average/good nhl forward talent (and fill out with better/elite talent through free agency and/or trades…possibly in draft for immediate help if they get flyer lottery luck) and filling the system through the draft.
I’m not a fan, but clear what they are attempting.

That’s what you don’t get Brother Jimmy. I’m a lot more that guy and the guys you don’t respect for ish, and just take our money than I am YOU. So blow the F off or get some perspective. Part of your sale of the teams will be the MSG contract, and what if all of us ‘common folk’ just stopped watching. Your deal would fall through and you’d lose your father’s lifetime of money building. So don’t bite the hands that pay you

So is Dolan the Soup Nazi with lousy soup? Knick fans should show up with paperbags over their heads like Patriot fans did when they were awful. I wonder how Dolan would react to that. Or how about the guy who hired the plane to fly over the Giant game with the “15 years of lousy football” banner behind it? That actually embaarrased the Maras into doing something about the team. Dolan would probably try to shoot down the plane. He is just another example of why nepotism is a bad idea.

The stories I’ve heard about Dolan are pretty horrifying, though unsurprising.
An old colleague of mine was at a network that Cablevision owned and he just sold. A lot of people were going to be moving on, so they threw a big party. Dolan, at the last minute, made them change the venue and totally re-plan the party because he needed a place with a stage for his “band” to play. Then at the party he hired attractive ringers to get people to dance. Then he made a Michael Scott-esque speech about how people were losing their jobs and moving on, but it’s okay because his stock went up.
Along those lines….does anybody watch Succession on HBO? Excellent show about very bad people sans money problems.
When Dolan was a kid, the Circus ran away and joined HIM.
St Pete Eli
I am really bummed out about Hajek’s injury. It appears to me that whenever a light shines on this franchise, whenever they get a break, it gets broken!

Dolan stabbed his own father in the back and stole Cablevision and the garden and it’s teams from him. What a lowlife.

Howell joined the Rangers out of Guelph of the OHA in 1952-53. By 1955-56 he was named team captain at the age of 22. Two years later he relinquished the “C,” essentially booed out of the captaincy by Garden fans who had disdain for his rather gentlemanly style. That apparently was a thing in New York back in the day, for a few years earlier not only had Allan Stanley been booed out of the captaincy, he was booed out of the city before crafting a Hall of Fame career on defense for the four-time Cup-winning Maple Leafs of the ’60s. (And you think the fans can be tough now.)

I still remember that night because we had one of those proposals on Gardenvision. Naturally, we are yelling “Just say no!” and it turns out they are sitting right behind us! She not only said yes, but she tapped us on our shoulders because she wanted to show off the engagement ring. IIRC, it was a pretty nice sized rock.

SN, oilers have had the worst management for the last decade or so, coupled with an almost complete inability to attract any good UFAs, so red herring in my opinion (and Buffalo falls in a very similar camp as far as attractive destinations as Sioux notes and to a lesser extent poor management). Having multiple high first round picks didn’t seem to hurt the Pens, Hawks, Kings Or Caps did it?
SN
Just like the Bruins and Kings who won a total of 3 cups with only one top 5 pick (#2) between them.
The Sharks, Knights, Preds and Rangers were in the finals without top 5 picks.
Pete
In recent years Calgary and Winnipeg have thus far been largely successful in retaining players they traded for or drafted, but haven’t at all been havens for notable free agents, more of the second tier variety at best
Pete
Actually bruins had seguín (#2 overall, which was one of the picks acquired as part of trading #5 overall kessel to the caps) on their cup roster (admittedly wasn’t a huge contributor but played in about half the playoff games that year and had 7 points). the kings traded Schenn (drafted 5th overall) as a key piece in trading for Richards from the Flyers.
None of those other teams won the Cup tho so not sure if that helps your argument. You need elite talent to win the Stanley Cup and yes it’s possible to acquire that outside of the top 5 of the draft, but you need to have great scouts and luck (would say we have neither) or make very great trades and/or free agent signings, though of course players that talented almost never gets traded and very rarely hit free agency in their prime years.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
SN
100% correct.
Unless there is a generational talent at the top of the draft, lottery picks are way overrated and guarantee nothing.
There is not generational talent at the top of this draft, so ping pong balls are irrelevant. If you want the most talented player this offseason, then you try for panarin in free agency or trade for a guy.
If they flyer luck into the lottery, then draft kakko if they’re lucky, great. If not, no big loss.
Pete
Way overrated seems like quite the stretch Wick. We very likely don’t have any elite players in our system or on our roster anymore (given Hank’s age), so an elite but not generational level prospect would be great to have even if such player wasn’t ready to make an impact for a couple years. In most drafts I think we’d agree you are more likely to draft the best players in the top 5 as opposed to 10 or later. Exceptions abound in all cases of course
SN
So only elite teams win Cups but SCF finalists don’t.; that explains why the Bokts did t win the Cup with their 2 top two picks a couple of years ago…
.
Wait, actually it explains the exact opposite.
Pete
I really don’t understand your argument SN. Every Cup winner in the last decade had a top 5 pick they drafted on their playoff roster the year the win the Cup and the Bruins are the lone team in that group where said top 5 pick wasn’t a meaningful contribitor. Of course drafting in the top 5 once or multiple times doesn’t guarantee making the playoffs let alone winning the Cup, but all things considered don’t you think it can help a lot to get one or even two top 5 draft picks?
Hank got unceremoniously knocked on his keister and other than Skjei, who had a couple words of scholarly chastisement, no one did a damned thing.
St Pete Eli

Random thought: Dan “and get that Brett…what’s his name – outa’ here too”, Yandle and Shatty – three big-ish contracts NOT bringing what management thought. Shattenkirk is not a bad player, but I think he would prosper with a play-off contender. I would shop him given the possibility.
Keep Staal for another two years (expires 2021) and add a couple of D-minded, experienced, crease-clearing McQuaids on short contracts. Let DeAngelo, Hajek, Skjei (not given up on him yet) and maybe Pionk show who’s worthy and who’s not.
We could compete for a spot in two years time.

That leaves 2 spots if none of those players get traded or are in the minors next season so 2 spots left in top 12 plus a 13th forward.
I think you need one, if not two, from the assume group to not be in the top 12 next season to make a reasonable organizational step forward.
I still think we’re in the 2nd year of a rebuild (started with the Step/Raanta trade and G buyout which preceded the letter by a fair bit.
All told it will be 3-5 years (so on short end 1 more year).
We really are worse than our points indicate. Tied for second lowest row.
Have we made mistakes already. Heck yes. Shatty signing for 1 big one. Buyout of Girardi too because that allowed the Shatty signing.
I do think we’ll make a large play for Panarin (who is young enough to be a big part in the eventual turnaround).

It was done because they didn’t want to keep Stepan into his ntc.
Sorry it doesn’t fit into your narrative at all, but keep trying bud.
James Dolan Threw A Knicks Fan Out Of MSG And Reportedly Banned Him For Life Because He Yelled “Sell The Team” At Dolan. [Video inside].
https://www.barstoolsports.com/newyork/james-dolan-banned-a-knicks-fan-from-msg-for-life-because-he-yelled-sell-the-team-at-dolan
What a d-bag corksucker.
I already said that the Shatty signing was a big mistake. Teams do make mistakes in all situations, including in rebuilds.
Hopefully they make more good moves than bad.
It was a mistake IF they were in the rebuild process then, but they weren’t so from that aspect it was NOT a mistake.
Now, as an “in general” signing mistake, that is a whole other story.
Guys, guys, guys….the rangers traded Del Zotto in 2014, 5 year rebuild complete.
That trade was the start of it, I tell you it was because it fits my narrative regardless of actual facts….
Lmmfao.
Oh God
This year is about them deciding if they have the right coach. Buch and Tony D developing are gravy and maybe the Strome trade. Zbad coming into his own is a plus. The record doesn’t matter much, but, the effort is more consistent. Also Boy George looks like he belongs.
Wholly crap, back at the rink and the music is beyond loud…it’s ridiculous.
Have a great nights gents, need to focus on youth hockey.

Too bad about Hajek. He was turning into a real nice story for this season.
Good morning, boneheads!
Nice tribute to Harry by LB:

I was going to post the Dolan video! Imagine being a billionaire and giving a isht some fan yelled something slightly mean at you.

Imagine watching the Knicks…
Can’t imagine either, Rob
My favorite part of the Dolan rant was how he told the fan to have fun watching on TV? Is that dig at the common man watching these things on TV. Like we’re lesser citizens?
The players deal with much worse heckling and almost always respond professionally. Dolan, usually shielded from the masses by his money, faces the lightest of criticism and goes off like the clown he is. So embarrassing.
He is a coke head loser who was born on third base and assumed he hit a triple. Just be happy he doesn’t know hockey or at least care about it. Not sure what Sather’s excuse is though…
Born on 3rd base and thought he hit a triple.
I love this line
That is awesome STranger nation
I am really bummed out about Hajek’s injury. It appears to me that whenever a light shines on this franchise, whenever they get a break, it gets broken!
Dolan tells Hajek, “If you can’t play, don’t use my showers and facilities.”
Dolan stabbed his own father in the back and stole Cablevision and the garden and it’s teams from him. What a lowlife.
Above from the Post. How things never change around here!

I do hope that Coleman is a marked man once they get Dennis Weaver back
Coleman should have been pummeled immediately after the hit.
ORF – A couple of friends and I did the paper bag think at the last Rangers game of the 1993 season. We got on TV because we went down to where Al Trautwig used to do the pregame. We even gave out a couple of bags to some long time season ticketholders in our section (423).
Anthony
Was she cute?
Jack Evans also got booed out of town and had a good career with the Hawks. No one seems to be mean enough for the Garden faithful.
I didn’t think the Coleman hit was dirty or particularly hard. Libor just got caught in an awkward position. The Xcheck on Names was different. There should have been a response there. Names also has to start taking numbers and responding. God helps those who help themselves.
ORF
Maybe, but I think Coleman saw his right arm up high decided to hit him hard. He still deserved a beating Hajek is a rookie and needed to be stood up for. IMO! And I agree on Names.
Wick – I honestly don’t remember. That was almost 26 years ago. I do remember that she was Asian though.
Don’t let you hit the door hit you on the azz Odell.
Coincidence: primadonnas porzingis and Odell let their egos take them out of the best market in the world
Dumbazzez. Win something first
Dammit
I got no excuse there. What did I even do there. I butchered that lol
Hmm who else reminds me of Dolan?! 🤔
Wholly Oakland Raiders
What happened with Odell?
Who’s that Pete?
TonyD a healthy scratch tonight. Usually I get a good laugh out the reaction to this stuff, but this one kind of makes me shake my head. He hasn’t been great lately, but still a head scratcher.
BDL
I saw a quick headline saying the giants said he is on the market. To be that just spells the inevitable.
Wicky thanks for the laughs 👍
Sioux
What’d I do?
Just whipping the boneheads into shape.
Wick we should road trip to the cities for the game this weekend?
All the Ping Pong ball fanatics should look at Oilers roster with R1 #1s (2), #3, #4, #7 and one less point than NYR this season…
.
Nail Yakupov sends his regards from the KHL.
Torts team sitting 8th place? Do they stick as a wild card?
SN – nobody wants to play in Edmonton unless you’re drafted there, almost like Buffalo
Any info on the extent of hajek’s injury?
I guess Calgary and Winnipeg are much more exciting places to play pro hockey in…
SN, oilers have had the worst management for the last decade or so, coupled with an almost complete inability to attract any good UFAs, so red herring in my opinion (and Buffalo falls in a very similar camp as far as attractive destinations as Sioux notes and to a lesser extent poor management). Having multiple high first round picks didn’t seem to hurt the Pens, Hawks, Kings Or Caps did it?
Just like the Bruins and Kings who won a total of 3 cups with only one top 5 pick (#2) between them.
The Sharks, Knights, Preds and Rangers were in the finals without top 5 picks.
In recent years Calgary and Winnipeg have thus far been largely successful in retaining players they traded for or drafted, but haven’t at all been havens for notable free agents, more of the second tier variety at best
So only elite teams win Cups but SCF finalists don’t.; that explains why the Bokts did t win the Cup with their 2 top two picks a couple of years ago…
.
Wait, actually it explains the exact opposite.
Even though they beat the debbies that was certainly one of their more cotton candy performances!
Is it Go Time yet?
Buffalo still a work in progress as eichel comes into his own and Dahlin still a teen
How long did it take Tampa to do well again after getting Stamkos and then Hedman?
How long did it take Washington? Ovechkin is 33, Bäckström is 31. They went through a bunch of other high level talent until they realized they also needed Wilsons and Smith-Pellys to win one.
Carped myself
