Good morning, boneheads!
Not good if you think ping pong balls, even though it wasn’t ROW. But very good for this team’s confidence. Come from behind wins like that go a long way, especially for a team that is going to grow together, along with their rookie coach. More importantly, it wasn’t only their first line this time. Players who are questionable to stay in NY for this re-stew are making a good impression that they want to be a part of it. Buchnevich played a strong game, not only assisting on 2 goals, but also winning a bunch of physical battles along the boards. And also Tony DeAngelo. My gosh, I mentioned it last night. If they can duct tape his mouth between the games and take it off while he is on the ice, this kid could be a solid addition next year, and many years after. Of course he can always eschew a duct tape option and just grow up.
As for the Bruins. Good team after quick turnaround. I don’t think they are a threat in the EC this year. But I wouldn’t underestimate them going forward. They have a very good salary cup structure and flexibility. Interestingly, the player with the highest AAV is David Krejci at $7.25M, followed by Rask ( $7M ). Anyone else is below $7M with their most important players signed long term.

The Bruins were surgical in defending the lead in the 3rd period. Right Pierre?
Pierre was unusually quiet last night. Wonder if his gaffe last week has him a bit gun shy. The broadcasts are better when Pierre does not go overboard.
Very surprising comeback and happy for D’Anger
Don’t think Boston has the depth scoring or top 4 D to make a lot of noise in the POs.
Agree SN and that has been the case for awhile. None of their forward youngins are overly impressive either at least as of yet.

Time to start making trades, can’t afford any more wins!
Bergeron didn’t go out there and have fun, Pierre!
And now…..once final tribute to McLeod.
Good morning Boneheads welcome to Thursday. Watched the game on delay so I wasn’t able to chime in. Really thought we had the ping pong balls in the bag, but as it is with the Rangers something will always go right or wrong depending on our point of view. That Chytil Goose has got some moves, sure hope he puts it all together the Rangers need a break in finding a really nice sniper. Time to make some moves or we will end up with my prediction picking 17 to 22. Come on Jeffy get crackin! Last but not least, even when Kreider doesn’t get on the score sheet he’s still a difference maker really hard on the puck, and yes always an occasional brain cramp.
The rangers are a blown lead vs LA and hot goalie vs philly away from a really good run of games.
I also think the rangers need to be making deals sooner than later, but it has nothing to do with dumb ping pong balls, but with the number of teams that seem to be willing to move first round picks and the number of forwards potentially available.
What is fat, has two thumbs and is going to the ceremony game tomorrow night?
THIS GUY
I hope DQ suits up some of the 94 guys for the real game
A fat guy broke the blog
I know I’m not supposed to, but I still really enjoy a good win. Especially in a game that got a bit chippy.
You shouldn’t have left it next to the cheese doodles
This won’t be a popular opinion, but the game changed for the Rangers when they moved Vesey up with Hayes. Vesey opened up space for Hayes, and Buchnevich. Became a 2 line team, instead of just 1.
Enjoyed this game. Not sure exactly why. Always a distinct pleasure to see a guy like Zibby exude the kind of confidence that defines an athletic breakthrough.
VC….uh….
Butch also decided to compete on the wall. Hopefully these guys watching the KZZ line win battles and keep possession in Ozone to create opportunities.
Imagine if Zucc tried all season; this team might be in position to make WC and really screw everything up…
I had to gouge my ears with a fork after hearing that anthem last night. Good lord. Big John is flip flopping like a fish in his grave. Ugh.
Georgie > Hank. And just as pretty.
Tired of reading how BIG are Chytil and Buch. USE IT! May as well both be 5’6 , 165.
Cheadle sulked away after those 3 quick Frederick cross checks early in the first. He’ll need a body guard or else he’ll be abused right and left…..
I was just thinking about this. I think it’s the college football that recruited me that really taught about using your advantages as a recruiter. I was part of his 1st recruiting class. He inherited a bunch of entitled prep schools upperclassmen.
But what he did is this. The school (div3) was considered a small-ivy league school that saw like 80% of graduates walk into 70K+ salaries bc of the corporate movers and shakers who were alum or who’s kids were going to school there. So what he did is he recruited a bunch of us who could have easily played at a higher level, and got the school to give him a certain # of full-grant scholarships. 160k education for free and as div3 and grants, not athletic scholarships, they couldn’t lose their scholarships if they didn’t/couldn’t play.
And he stacked his roster to be like 1AA/div 2 players in a league with div3 players. My incoming class, the guys who came in with me and stayed at the school, they were the building blocks of a program which ended up recording an NCAA record for most wins in a row. Something like 70 wins in a row.

entertaining game …Hopefully Buch got the message…definitely looked more involved and physical last night …They really need to move Shattenkirk… he is a defensive liability and not going to get any faster
Only 19 more to complete the 20 game winning streak…
Hate to say this but.. I’m not sure they win that game last night if the (recent) HL is in goal. Regardless of what else they do, the last two years of Shampoo Boy are going to be a bumpy ride.
BDL
the B’s were also playing their 3rd in 4 days with the other 2 against Wash and Brooklyn.
PS Isles fans don’t like it when their team is called Brooklyn.
Could you imagine we had chara and traded him away 2 years into his career.
Kinda funny how everyone glances over that
Isles want playoff games in Nassau but its Buttman’s call…whats the likelihood he approves and takes lower revenues than they would get in Brooklyn
I wonder if Henrik re-signs for couple of years after this contract. In the 5 or 6 million (per) range. I am not suggesting that as something I would want.
Boston article on The Athletic (Fluto Shinazawa, who’s actually a great beat guy unlike Joe Haggerty) about the reported price for the Bruins to get Panarin. Very interesting to see in relation to what our wants/expectations are for a Hayes or Kreider trade.
Essentially, Columbus is asking for an R1, a top prospect, and a secondary young player. They named Trent Frederic as the “secondary young player.” Which, again, is interesting because in a Hayes deal of a similar return, Frederic is probably the “top prospect.”
We may want to play Hank more if we want more ping pong balls, Prust saying?
I have always been a fan of sticking with DeAngelo. As I said a few days ago he is the only present D man I’m psyched to see on the blueline next year.
Lingren DeAngelo
Skjei Lone Wolf
Hajek ?
SN – do you remember the game winning goal I scored in game 7, back in ‘94?
Dow down almost 300 on rumors Hank is starting the next few games….
Tony D is the best D-man we have….he and Lone Wolf make an excellent pairing should we keep the wolf next season…
Larry Kudrow snorts the third base line, learns Hank will be playing more, announces trade deal with jhiiiiina is not coming along ,and now the market is heading south….
EF Hutton Says “play Georgie”
The ideal situation for the rangers is..,
The sens amazingly re-sign both their guys
Teams stay away from panarin and go for him in free agency
Carolina uses ferland as it’s own rental
E3 – Solidarity

thinking of attending my first game of the season tomorrow night, just to see if Eddie (No Check) Olczyk and Doug (C) Lidster show up…
SN – given you were 4th pick overall in ‘92, and played on the 3rd line on our ‘94 team, of course you’ll be at the game….standing next to me. I’ll be one of the guys wearing an A
Doug C. Lidster – another 7th round pick and rumored to be a Canuck spy through out the Cup run.

Here is a look at the mask Hank will be wearing Friday night in honor of Mike Richter and the 1994 team.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dyz9qxBXcAEhClL.jpg:large
ping pong balls will be back in play after deadline…they are already at bottom of league in scoring now with bulk of offense coming from 4 forwards, at least 2 of which are getting moved
I’m going to Lmmfao if they don’t trade either guy and gorton says we wanted to make sure we had a competitive team this season and can’t afford to take that much offence off the team because we might end up at the bottom of the standings if we do.
Game6 94 ECF on MSG now
Richter looks like a midget in goal
Nemchinov with the own goal to start the scoring
Sakic announces he won’t trade either of his R1s (Ottawa’s or his own) at the deadline. Most likely positioning himself for negotiations of course.
Sakic is a stone wall unless he comes out on top he won’t be making any deals it is who he is. He will go down with the ship before he loses a trade!
Salic smart – they aren’t ready; load up more young talent.
The Coloradi have a worse record even than the Rangers . Stop with the Sakik genius poetry.
Agreed re Sakic. It’s been said their big year is next year as far as going for it.
https://twitter.com/NYRangers/status/1093532116871249920
Who would you say were the 3 most important rangers in 94 that did not have jersey retired
Mine were
Zubov
Kovalev
Matteau
Honorable mention larmer
Once, Sakic got one of the worst GMs on one of the worst teams in this league to blink first. I, too, need to see more from him before anointing him top GM status.
Never said Sakic was smart just thickheaded!
Heh, fair enough
Quinn stepping on Pierre’s tongue was the best!
Larmer
Kovalev

Lidster.
Came in for a suspended Buekeboom in game 6 against the Devils and never left.
Wicky
on the banner raising night, after the game at a bar neat msg, I spoke to a scout who also played for the Leafs and Hawks. I was raving about Nemchinov to him.
I also thought of Beuk and thought you would as well.
I have game 6 on
Mess just scored and I smiled and laughed like it happened just now.
and the punk Lemieux just shot the puck deliberately at a ranger late in the game.
several rangers went after him.
https://nypost.com/2019/02/07/elderly-women-brawl-as-nursing-home-bingo-game-takes-violent-turn/
Any relations to any of you?
If that game was played this era, there would be non-stop PPs.
.
It was Sports Channel broadcast with Dic, I mean, Doc Screech. They kept showing Fatso’s father and talking up how he had only seen him play once prior, blah, blah, blah. For some reason, they stopped showing him with 10 mins to go in the game.
Kovi was the key in that game as much as Mess. Richter was at least 5 feet in front of the crease on most shots, esp from outside.
Lol
Doug lidster=jerry Seinfeld
That was a thing when I was a kid with my cousin and dad
Steve larmer was my dad’s favorite ranger during that 94 run. The amount of times he must have said ‘in the past, the rangers lose this game bc they never had a guy like larmer’
Actually remember as a kid being upset he decided to retire
Kovalev
Zubov
Matteau
Honorable mention: larmer, lowe, nemchinov
Warrior to the day I die: graves and wells
Wicky what were you doing down in Provo?
https://nypost.com/video/shocked-hunters-film-bigfoot-stalking-the-mountains-of-utah/
Larmer showed you didn’t have to be 6’2, 220 to be a power forward. Great player.
And one of the few guys that we got for the Cup run where we didn’t give up a future star going the other way.
SN,
Daneyko has said the the Devils felt it was Kovalev who took over that game. He was the one that gave them fits. A goal and two assists for Kovalev.
Man, when Kovalev was on, he opened up the entire ice. The guy was a freak. And utterly uncoachable. It’s no coincidence that he had his best years in Pittsburgh, where coaches don’t exactly coach.
Kovalev for me too. A bit biased, knew him personally. Carp should tell you one day about his skills, and what kind of circus moves he used to do in practice.
Kovalev basically invented the “I don’t know what’s going on…he’s the best player in practice by far!” trope.
That’s why I rep his troll and still wear his jersey to games
Definition of an ‘X-factor’
If y’all remember kovalev was still egimatic as F. But he played the best of his career in that devil series (opened the door in game 6) and forever will be the difference maker in the biggest series in the history of the franchise
That ACL injury cost him his career in NY. Had he never gotten injured and put up a 70 pt season instead to follow up 94’.
Never would have been traded so early

Pouring champagne on the trolls head. Lol
DeAngelo is the new Avery…sort of.
For old times sake and one last time.
I want all you boneheads there and fans reading to chant 1940 all game tomorrow night
Also wonder if rangers are back in the finals in 97 if kovalev never went down
This was the best!!

Some non-Capitals buzz: Hearing the Predators are exploring the idea of trading for Artemi Panarin.
I assume they will come out flat tomorrow night like they usually do after a pregame celebration. Maybe Mess will give them a pregame pep talk. Still have mixed feelings about celebrating 25 years of futility. Also why on February 8th? I guess a feel good night in the middle of the rebuild should be a welcome break. What are they going to do next year? Retire Slat’s number 6?
Retire Slats, not his number. They should take him and hang him in the lobby.
Thinking of 94 these days has started to make me bitter about the organization but tonight I really can’t do anything but smile and remember all the insanely exciting and nerve wrecking moments of that year.
Can someone tell me what’s up w DeAngelo in regards to his “big mouth”? I know he had said some dumb things prior to being a Ranger. Is that stuff still happening?
Retire Sather right next to Jimmy Hoffa…
Thoughts on Brett Pesce? Sounds like the stay at home type of defensemen we’ve been wanting. Not sure what we have to offer that Canes would want/accept. Future Bonehead name obviously ‘the Fish’
‘Cousin Vinnie”
Will Pesce, from Tarrytown, provide a hometown discount that won’t feel like a Sharty markup?
Time for Brad Park number retirement …kind of ridiculous a HOF is not up there already
Hutchinson River Parkway already named after him.
Agree on Park 1000%
Well this is troubling:

I guess we can’t post links here anymore (or never were able to?) – tried a few times, so apologies if they all show up in a few minutes.
Anyway – troubling article over at Blueshirt Banter on the state of the Wolfpack.
Weird, SN posts a link. Mine all get bounced back
The Missing Link
Boring crowd here today. So what else is new?
Pesce under contract thru 2024 at 4.025 per, no clauses.
I’d be all in on Pesce.
Good morning, boneheads!
DaveB, if you post multiple links, it goes in moderation. For some reason yours went right into spam folder even though it only had one link. I just approved it.
So I will schedule a Go Time Post for 6:30 even though the game is at 8. Enjoy the celebration, folks. I almost went, but the way it looks now I won’t even be able to watch it live in TV. DVR it is…
Thanks ILB. I’m thinking the first one bounced because I just posted a link without writing anything. Then the second one probably triggered because of the first one. Oh well, problem solved, and good to know.
I’m guessing today will be a boring day, as they aren’t going to trade anybody on ’94 Day.
Dave,
How many Pack games do you suspect the author of that article has attended, or watched?
Has the Banter ever written a non-troubling article?
Not entirely sure BDL – but I will say that he was live-tweeting a Pack game a few days ago, and it looks like he watches them on the reg.
He does mention (and I agree) that the AHL is, by definition, kind of a discombobulated league. You have super-raw kids, low-talent players, and a ton of moving parts and roster overturning. But, I mean, the evidence is there – not that we’ve given them THAT much depth to work with over the years…but other than the guys that are sure-fire NHLers, they don’t develop anybody else.
I have not read the article but am curious if AHL success translates to NHL prospect or team success. Detroit’s AHL club won the Calder Cup 2 seasons ago with Dylan McIlrath on the backline. Red Wings stink this year and probably going to stink for a little while. These clubs are part development, part profit entity, mostly in a regional market with little or no competition for the local pro hockey fans wanting to see a level above college.
Just read article, the most disturbing part is the lack of professional coaching resources at Hartford to facilitate/expedite player development.
I blame Drury and his thin crust pie.
Hilarious coverage by DGB on the athletic about some upcoming RFAs….
This is my favourite though
Matthew Tkachuk, Flames: Look, we can speculate all we want about how much he’s worth and his true value to the team, but we all know he’s going to try to sign for exactly one dollar more than Drew Doughty just to be a prick.
Dave,
The Rangers are very early in the replenishing of the farm system/ prospect pool. Of course there is not a lot there. Most of them are in college/juniors/Europe. It was a negative article for the sake of being negative.
I went to a couple of Pack games last year and it looked like they were playing AV’s system. They were running all over the place and bleeding SOGs. They shouldn’t be an issue this year. Boy George looks ok when he plays for the big club, but, gets lit up every time he play for the Pack. They should at least be able to be mediocre. I know Drury is supposed to be a rising star, but, the Pack is his baby and they have gotten worse on his watch. Not good to have on your resume. So far helping to sign Vesey is his major accomplishment. He hasn’t demonstrated an ability to build a team form the ground up which he has the opportunity to do.
I’ve heard, not saying it’s the truth but it’s what I heard, that in the case of some players the AHL is a tougher league than the nhl.
Also holds true for a lot of goalies.
And by tough I don’t mean physically, just that the systems and teammmates aren’t as polished as at the nhl level.
Hajek, Lindgren, Day, 1st year pros, 20 years old. Crawley, 2nd year pro, 20. All learning to play D professionally. It’s called a developmental league for a reason.
Amen BDL; just hope the appropriate resources are there to hasten that development
ILB, I used to hang out at open practice at playland and watch those moves you’re talking about. He was literally like no one I have ever seen with his combo of hands and skating.
Then there is the idea of living in and around Hartford which is a mixed bag at best.
94 cup was so special for my Dad and I..the boys were young (5, 2 and 3 days old -youngest was born 6 11 94 game 6 night…)
But I had turned 40 and all the endless 1940 stuff..it was just such a
Relief..so much joy ..I was so grateful to that team and those players….going tonight and looking forward to memory lane…would be nice if MSG rolled back beer prices to 1994 prices
It sure is a developmental league, and there has to be a learning curve. But there also has to be learning. At the end of the day, when said players don’t work out – we tend to blame OTBG and Gorton. ORF had a good point – when we had AV, Hartford mimicked his system (to a bad result). It shouldn’t be an issue this year, but it seems to be. I’m not letting our scouts and management off the hook, but it shouldn’t be THAT hard to get a good development system going.
And good point Wicky – especially if said players are the type that don’t create on their own.
When the farm system has been an after thought for a long time, and because of that you are starting from scratch, yes it takes a long time to put it together. This it should happen overnight stuff is just flat out wrong.
How many players are in Hartford that we actually care about? Andersson, Hajek, and Lindgren for sure. I personally liked what I saw of Gettinger, so I’ll count him. Meskannen maybe? Is there still hope for Day? Fogarty? There is not a lot there yet. Worrying about trading Cole Schneider? Yeah, he’s important for the long haul. It takes time.
Wicky so what would you be willing to offer up for Pesce?
I agree with you solely on the basis of talent, BDL. But in terms of having developmental systems in place that can give a fighting chance of an NHL career to the kids who aren’t shoe-ins? I can’t get on board with the organization basically saying “Hey, we only started caring about this 2 years ago, sorry.” I get that the vast majority of these prospects are low-percentage, in terms of making it. But the fact that nobody can work their way into being even a 4th liner in the NHL? Even if/when they leave?
It’s not an overnight fix, nor is it something that should take years to take root.
And all that being said – yeah, an alarmist article is an alarmist article.
Takes time for sure and don’t think much changes next year or even the year after unless we start drafting or trading for some forwards with more than 4th line potential and LHD. Anderson could be back in Hartford I guess (though that wouldn’t be a positive) or Kratsov (though guessing he won’t be there for long if so), but otherwise we have no forwards of note in the pipeline. That needs to change ASAP as your AHL team should have some players you can fill good calling up if need be as well as a couple guys a year or two away that are getting good coaching.
Panarin fired his agent. Seems the guy was loafing around a bit too much.
Beezle
Buchnevich
Beezle and Buchnevich is a bit too much. Beezle straight up, or a 2nd rounder coming back our way.
ILB – all the LOLs and praise for my dad jokes are going in the spam folder.
Lol… yeah I’m a cold weather person… Minny or Canada for me (but not Edmonton!)
Think it would take more than Buchy though
Man, firing your agent a few months before you sign a $70M deal…
It probably feels a lot better than being an agent who gets fired a few months before your (ex-) client signs a $70M contract.
Don’t worry Beezle they tried to trade me for a bag of pucks last week 🙁
Are we still hoping about Fontaine becoming a player?
Watching these 94’ ECF games against the Devils…. 2 observations:
1) I now remember why Graves was my favorite player as a kid. The guy just brought it… what a gamer!
2) I also remember/pine for the days that the Garden was ROCKING. I mean it was LOUD.
I remember being at game 1 of this series when Richer ripped our hearts out in OT to take game 1. But holy crap was that place LOUD. Couldn’t hear John Amironte.
https://twitter.com/NYRangers/status/1093912378729738241
The 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs and win are my greatest sports moment. I watched on TV. I still get goosebumps when I hear the Garden faithful chant “1940” in elated/exasperated relief.
I still get emotional watching Amirante sing the anthem for Game 7. And I still get emotional after Leetch scores the first goal. Zubov-Leetch… what a tandem.
1994 even eclipses the 2003 Aaron Boone Game 7 homer to defeat the Red Sox. I was at that game with my dad — Yankee Stadium actually shook for minutes after that homer — but for some reason, nothing has/nor ever will top 1994.
I’m excited. I will be going to see Hartford play against the Phantoms this Sunday afternoon. Most interested in seeing some of the young D-men up close and Lias, too. I have seats a few rows behind the bench (about $30!) Pretty big difference from seeing a game at MSG.
Yea hard to beat that season Ak. Was at all of the playoff home games (except game 1 of the finals) with my dad and either a friend or family member. Memories that will last a lifetime for sure! Here’s hoping we all get to see another Cup tho!

the above podcast talks a great deal about 94 after sam started with his jinx. maloney and giannone do a great job on this.
Calhob -enjoy that game, and let us know if that BB Wolfpack article seems like BS or not.
Thanks! I will. I am bringing my 3 and a half year old. It will be her first hockey game, so I am pumped for that. It is much more manageable than going to MSG with her.
I am wondering…. for anyone who this applies to: how old were your kids when you brought them to their first hockey games???
I have a 5 year old and we still haven’t done it – but I think she’s almost ready. But I think you’re definitely better off easing her in with the minor-league game. Probably not as overwhelming an arena.
Maloney said jd, sal Messina, and Howie rose will be there
I have twin girls on the way…. could be born anyday now…. It’ll be a little bit before I splurge the money on those tickets and make the 2.5 hour drive down from Albany….
For now, they get Rangers onesies to wear….
Craig- congrats! I have two girls (7 months and 3.5) The oldest loves the Rangers goal song. I can’t wait to take her to MSG, but not for a few more years.

Congrats!
Congrats Craig!
congrats Craig… first game with my son was when he was 6… great game it was the Malik shootout game when he scored between his legs .. he was hooked on hockey from there

Thanks guys!
Wow- first game is the Malik between the legs shootout goal!
Yeah- I’m excited and pooping a brick all-in-one. But… I’m 39, so…. it’s time. The twins part… wasn’t expecting that, but hey… as long as they’re healthy…. I’m happy.
Loved what Tom Wilson did last night
Did you like the visor on Wilson’s helmet?
90% of the time the linesmen break that up before it even starts.

’94 finals you couldn’t hear anything in the Anthem after “Oh, say….”
Hey Craig- congratulations man!
Are they serious with that annoying banner on the left side of the television screen?
I can’t watch
Those ex-Oilers new how to use their sticks on the opponent!!!
Yahtzee!!!!!
One named I have not seen mentioned for tonight’s fun is Marv Albert. Don’t know about the rest of you,but he was a very big part of my experience listening to the Rangers in the 60’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s. I guess he is still persona non grata. Too bad.
I am not so sure about trading for Pesce – there is something fishy about that guy. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I blame the tramadol I am taking after having a tooth extracted.
Interesting take on the Wolf Pack. I think they need to clean out the coaches and bring in a whole new staff which should include a forward, d-man and a goalie so that some actually teaching can take place.
I know that Hartford is convenient, but it might be time for the Rangers to move on. Hockey fans in Hartford never warmed up to the Rangers and some, for some convoluted reason, think the Rangers are the reason the Whalers are on Tobacco Road. They still hold out the misguided hope that the NHL will return. Of course, the Rangers did help themselves any getting around to pricing tickets above AH: range a few years ago.
Wearing white tonight
The whole city has reinvented itself ten times over since ‘94 but the area immediately around the garden is as great and gritty as ever. Time stood still around here except for The Penn Bar
