Morning ilb,
I suspect they are going to wait till after Friday, before they start removing the clutter. And the it’s going to get really ugly. They have 4 forwards who can play, FOUR! They are going to trade two of them.
Bdl
Carp mentioned Gorton is looking more for players, than draft picks. I think that’s wise.
ilb2001
He should be looking for players. You can only accumulate so many picks. At some point they need to have to have a lineup that can play in this league, not in minors/juniors/Europe. Gorton’s main trading pieces have been playing great lately, he should get a good return.
Bdl
They are at least finding out about some guys they needed to find out about. Vesey, on a good team, could play a good 4th line role. He’s not a top 9 player. It’s time to move on from Buchnevich. Whatever it is we all thought was there, isn’t. Pionk is a 5/6, being asked to play 1/2. It’s not going well. I don’t think we know what a TonyD is. He’s never been given a long enough run to find out.
Bdl
Ilb,
I would sign for Roslovic, and Frederick right now.
ilb2001
Roslovic is a big piece in Winnipeg’s future, it appears. They need to decide whether Hayes is a sufficient upgrade over him to win a cup this year.
Bdl
I can’t stand Tampa. Wicky has been right about them the entire time. Someday someone is going to teach that sneaky dirty Kucharov a lesson.
ilb2001
Gotta run, BDL. Sorry, can’t continue for now. Later
Bdl
Where James? I haven’t read anything angry all morning.
Bdl

Bdl

Good morning, sir. Still having heart palpitations after that Brooks article. Agree 100% about players. I just think they should be players that fit to Quinn’s system a bit better
As for Zucc and Hayes and the possibility of them re-signing, I don’t like it. Zuccarello is going to be 32 by the start of camp. He’s shown his decline this year. He’s on a hot streak and has as many points over the last four weeks as he did the entire season to that point. It’s not going to last. And I just flat out don’t think Hayes is worth a 7×7. Just not enough there offensively to this point in his career
Winnipeg has some nice young players. They look to have more NHL ready players available than Colorado. Roslovic had a hatty last night, but it was against an absolutely dreadful Anaheim who gave up 6 in the first period and 9 on the night. I do hope that the Hayes deal brings back a good player and not just prospects. They have to have some guys to play in NY. Tampa sure have a few players who are willing to go the dirty route. Loved the play where Kucherov ran at Shattenkirk and got Shattenkirk’s elbow to his grill for his trouble.
James G
Can’t wait to hear all the advocates for trading McQuaid because of his age start making their case for keeping Zucc for another 2-3 years.
TomK
So Rangers can sign some familiar UFA’s this summer: Hayes, Zucc, McQuaid, Stralman, Girardi, Hagelin, Brassard, Talbot and Brian Boyle.
DaveB
All we’ve been hearing, especially from Carp, is that contract negotiations between Hayes and the team are pretty much non-existent.
Then Pierre comes out and says that we’re “working diligently on an extension.”
WTF is wrong with Pierre?
James G
I don’t think teams are interested in parting ways with players that will be a big part of their future as other guys can’t be fit under the cap or getting older/decline.
In a buyer’s market teams like Winnipeg and Tampa aren’t going to give up guys like Roslovic or Foote. If the price is too high for Hayes someone will pull a deal for a Schenn or Dzingel. These guys don’t want to just compete this year they want to have a window to compete for several. That’s why they’d rather part with guys like Stastny, Namestnikov etc. It’s because they don’t want to have issues in 2 years or so when it’s time to extend guys like Kyle Connor or Brayden Point.
James G
Don’t throw anything at me but I’d take Boyle on a one year contract. Nieves is an AHL player. Lias and Fontaine don’t belong on a fourth line. As long as Quinn doesn’t have him centering the second line by November I think a move like that is fine. Or just use Strome.
BobbyO
Boyle seems like a Quinn type of player for sure
DaveB
If Boyle wanted a 1-year as a mentor-type, I wouldn’t say no.
I just saw that the Hawks asked Seabrook to waive his NMC, and he said “nope I love it here.” Say what you will about the Girardi contract…Seabrook’s is in another galaxy. But that’s the price of winning…
James G
I get it from both sides with Seabrook. He’s spent his whole career there he’s got family etc. But Here’s an organization that’s been good to him, paid him, he’s won three Cups there, and the organization is obviously transitioning. Gotta do the right thing.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Don’t be shocked if hayes is dealt to Winnipeg if they can’t get roslovic and it’s Appleton that comes this way.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
James
Did you hear that carter said if la trades him, he’ll retire.
Talk about killing a trade value lol.
DaveB
If Zucc goes to Calgary, I want either Mangiapane or D’Artagnan Joly. Smallish guys with high offensive upside.
Rasmus Andersson is my dream Calgary trade target (hulking and skilled RHD who’s NHL ready) but he’s going nowhere.
Ain’t it great how nobody is willing to trade top prospects anymore. But we almost insisted on doing so over the past 20 years.
Beezle
I don’t think Hayes will get 7×7 in off season. Someone might toss out 7×5 but think 6.5×6, maybe 6.75×6 and it is likely that the NYR would be overbid or pay more than they would like to resign then. If they want him, do it now.
Looking at what some others are getting, 6×6 is a virtual lock. If the NYR come to him now with 6.25ish plus (ducks) the captaincy, or even the 7×5 if they don’t like term (and Wicky thinks guys are liking a little shorter to get a 2nd big contract later) that could work.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Beezle
I think most of the guys that are going shorter are younger guys that want the 2nd big payday. Guys the age of point or rantannen or mathews.
Those 4,5,or 6 year deals walk them to free agency at around 27 and it helps the team because the aav is lower.
I think hayes is in the longer deal camp because of his age.
I think the “older” guys in the upper 20’s will go the more “traditional” longer term route.
Of course this could certainly all change and I think it’s going to be interesting re the offer sheet possibly this off season.
If you believe Dreger, there are multiple teams that have said if marner gets to the point it is “legal” for them to offer sheet him, they will.
Should be fun if offer sheets actually happen.
James G
Wick, I hadn’t heard that. Talk about a trashy move. Maybe take a professional point of view on things like all players eventually have to do. Guys getting 7 million dollars to have 25 points on the year and gets to hang out in LA while he does it. ‘Merica at it’s finest!
Alex
Offer sheets will be matched. The team has a week to make that decision.
What are we going to do make Marner an offer sheet July 3 then July 10 do point. then when both matched all the goodies from ufa have a dance partner.
I hope we don’t waste our time. It’s also putting all our eggs in 1 basket. Good players need other good players to play with.
I’d rather overpay Panarin in years and $.
Alex
If Carter doesn’t like a trade (like Wicky said) he’d retire and LA will get a nice cap recapture hit as a going away present. Carter has all the leverage.
James G
Hayes isn’t worth 7×7. Sorry. He’s hurt every year. his scoring wasn’t bad but wasn’t great either prior to being bubble wrapped. I’d rather have that money pushed toward replenishing the RW position.
Personally, If Mark Stone isn’t getting an extension in Ottawa I’d rather make a similar offer to him.
James G
Pathetic, Alex. Nice way to treat an organization that’s been good to you. Just like Seabrook.
James G
As for offer sheeting Marner, I’d still do it. Toronto is going to have some serious cap issues even after Marleau and Kadri are gone. Their D is still suspect. They can’t afford to upgrade or pay who they currently have and retain every forward at the same time. Maybe they match it but maybe it means they have to trade Kadri or Nylander to do it.
Alex
some big name guys that probably won’t make it to end of contract since year by year $ drop off significantly. So could be some nice sized cap recapture hit coming up in next couple of years.
Luongo (Vanc hit too)
Keith (jersey detergent allergy?)
Carter (as mentioned above)
Weber (a bit further out and Nashville would be hit too, although I think they avoid it somehow since was match of a Philly offer and Nashville may not have been a cap max team)
James G
Tampa would match any contract for Point, I think. There’s contracts there to shed- Coburn, Girardi, Stralman, Callahan, Tyler Johnson. All going to be playing elsewhere before they take priority over Point.
Couple of years ago but lists some of the biggies re possible cap recapture
I forgot about the minny duo
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Of course every team is going to say they’ll match an offer sheet, why wouldn’t they?
But will they is an entirely different story.
Also, let us not forget that cap space is a very real tangy asset in the hard cap nhl.
DaveB
I can’t stand Carter. Never could. He’s one of those “hate the face” guys – just looks like a jerk. And his behavior backs it up. He’s always been a complete pr**k. He was part of the problem core in Philly, and when he was traded to
Columbus he moped until he could force a trade out. Now this?
I understand that players are human beings and have feelings – but cmon dude.
DaveB
The whole “gentleman’s agreement” to refrain from offer sheeting is basically collusion.
I don’t want a total free-for-all or anything, but some more RFA movement would make things a little spicier
Alex
I remember we offer sheeted Sakic and Colorado had a week or 10 days to match. They faxed a picture of a fist with the middle finger extended when they did the match (which they took the whole time to do so)
DaveB
Heh I remember that Alex. Though weren’t they waiting to see if Air Force One could go #1 at the box office?
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Elie cleared, I like him.
Paul on waivers from the sens…always an intriguing player to me.

Chris Kreider (23:18) and Pavel Buchnevich (21:10) also established single-game career-highs in ice time tonight. In addition, Mika Zibanejad (25:24) was 26 seconds shy of tying his single-game career-high in ice time.
DaveB
A lot of chatter during the game about Buch’s ice time being a clear sign they’re showcasing him. I couldn’t disagree more.
If he’s being showcased, then his prior scratch was a major piece of poor asset management. It also means that DQ has final say over his lineup. And DQ isn’t going to play a guy just to showcase him.
He very well may be on the block (and I’d be surprised if not). But his ice and his availability are not related in the slightest.
Career-wise, Haze gives you a goal every 4 games, even now with his latest “tear.” Gentlemanly 6’5, 220 whom no one fears or worries about a hit. Looking for big bucks and long term? See ya.
Somebody axe Staal what side of the ice he’s responsible for.
Beezle
On Hayes – the past few years I was really on his case but the past year he has really matured both on and off the ice. Still sounds like a brick in interviews but at least what he does say is reasonable and on point. A year from now I suspect Bonehead nation (and others) will be clamoring about how we let him get away.
Beezle
Reading the Carp, agree with most things DQ says but
Then again, it’s a 24-year-old kid who’s growing.
was said about D’Anger.
I think it is time we stop calling those over 21 kids. If you want to say ‘young man’ then OK but kid no more.
James G
Alex, that Sakic offer sheet was a joke. Neil Smith was desperate to replace Messier with someone of notoriety and actually thought the Avs would balk when it came to their franchise player who was just entering his prime.
Don’t get me wrong, I give him credit for having the testicular fortitude to make the offer but it was a pretty cut and dry situation
James G
Tell Carp to tell Quinn I’ll use kid to describe anyone I want I don’t care how old they are.
If I want to call BDL a kid, I will.
Alex
our old pals and their numbers
Step 23 pts in 51 games
Dubi 11 pts in 37 games
Cally 13 pts in 41 games
Brass 16 pts in 41 games
Amazing that Step lumbers down the ice into the Ozone before the play moves back into his end.
Old Ranger Fan
Those numbers really make you hesitate before signing on to long term contracts. Are all of those guys making $5 million +?
Old Ranger Fan
I think Mr. Pink can rest for a few and let Tony D shown what he has. He seems really bewildered at times like he is in over his hear.
Pete
Offer sheet compensation is too high in today’s game. Almost no player is worth 4 first round picks unless you know you are going to the semis every year and also have a ton of cap space…which isn’t likely to be the case for any such team as far as cap space. And if you make an offer that doesn’t trigger the 4 first round picks, other team will easily match for a good player.
—-
All for getting young players instead of just picks, just not sure Hayes or Zuc brings back that good a prospect on their own. Unfortunately Kreider is still the only player who I think would bring back a great return player wise and reasons not to move him obviously.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
I think there are a couple of interesting things being bandied about with what other teams want.
Toronto wants a physical forward. If the price is too rich for simmonds or ferland would vesey be a lower cost option?
Nashville not only wants a top six guy but losing Watson indefinitely would also put them in for 2 Nhl guys…could we package Buch with hayes and increase a return?
The jets are physical already, so getting a non physical hayes or zucc (I’d think hayes more than zucc is a fit there) is not a problem for them.
CCCP
My The Athletic subscription expired. Has it been a year? I barely ever go there (sorry Carp!)… should I pay up?
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
I don’t think it’s so easy for teams to match a 10.8 mil per 5 contract on a rfa as some think.
They might indeed match a contract like that or an even bigger one, but it will not come at no cost and the question will be is the maneuvering required to retain be worth it short and long term.
For some cap strapped teams, it’s a lot more difficult than some of you make it out to be.
It’s also why a lot of teams want to trade for guys that are signed past this year, cost certainty.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee

I hear you wick, I just have a feeling Toronto doesn’t let either guy get away and nor does Tampa. Also Marner is from Ontario so would expect him to like being closer to home (and would guess a leafs fan growing up). Maybe Point is more flexible on that front but also doubt he wants to leave Tampa for a team that is far off like Arizona or even Florida
Old Ranger Fan
So the ice time numbers line up with what I saw. ZZK were on the ice a lot. DQ knows he has one line. They held Tampa to 23 shots. They have been much better defensively recently. If they can do that and establish a consistent forecheck going forward this season is a success. That will be hard to do after the fire sale.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Pete
I think mathews signs with leafs pretty soon.
A lot, if not all of these guys may indeed be signed before an offer sheet is even possible so it may all be a moot point.
I think marner could be an interesting one depending on what the Mathews deal ends up being.
Point is interesting from the aspect of it’s not just about this off-season and the guys that may be leaving via free agency but the guys they have to sign in the next couple of seasons to deals.
There are a lot more “potential” rfa players out there this summer than just guys from Tampa and Toronto though. I think most will be handled by their teams, but the possibility is certainly out there that someone gets tendered if they make it to that stage.
James G
Florida supposedly intends to make a big splash an attempt to sign Panarin + Bobrovsky.
St Pete Eli
Watched the game delayed last night very happy with the compete level. Yeah the 2nd period stunk, but they never quit a good sign IMO. Hope Gorton can move Staal he can’t skate anymore anyone who can’t see that has blinders on. Hayes to the Jets is the obvious landing spot, but Roslovic ain’t happening.
St Pete Eli
Guys I would like to see gone at the deadline.
Staal

Pig oink
I still believe in Buchnevich!
James G
Wick, I think at the end of the day it’s all a balancing act. Most teams that have franchise players locked up long term (or will) are faced with a big task in trying to keep a supporting cast around those core guys. Rutherford has done a great job obviously. Chicago was doing alright and then made the Panarin trade and some questionable signings instead of trying to retain guys like Shaw and Saad and it backfired.
It’s going to get increasingly trickier for teams like Toronto and Tampa and even Winnipeg. The minute they made Tavares that offer they had come to terms with the fact that they’d lose a significant player or two shortly down the road. And now on top of that they’ve extended Nylander for six years for about a million dollars more a year than they wanted to. They should still have about 23 million in cap space. If Matthews gets 8-10 of that, there’s going to be a limit on Marner…So I’m with you- why not try to snatch him up?
Anyone who has a no-trade clause or a no-trade list unlikely to come to a team like NYR with stumbling mgmt. and big taxes.
Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee
Since I’ve got a break here before the next hockey practice…let’s do a fun hypothetical exercise.
Let’s say the rangers Forrest Gump themselves into a lottery pick and get a play next year young guy at forward
Let’s also say the rangers trade the two forwards we all think will be dealt
Furthermore, all 3 young forwards this season are rangers next year
So…who do you guys think are the 12 forwards starting next season?
Zibanejad, Kreider, andersson, howden, chytil, “the draft pick….?
Alex
James
Nylander will be traded
Gardiner and Hainsey will walk
they’ll dump Horton’ contract on a cap floor team
Old Ranger Fan
Zbad, K, Andersson, Chytil, Kratsov, Strome, Names, VC, Howden, two guys they get for Hayes and Zucc and a UFA they sign. It depends on who they get for Zucc and Hayes whether that group will be any better. Also how Andersson and Chytil improve and how good Kratsov is. Hope they are in a better situation next year and not just treading water and talking about who they will get for Kreider and maybe Zbad.
I think they trade Names and Vesey. I also think a Strome could be moved, especially to a team that wants to shed salary and then buy him out. Nieves bolts to a team that’ll play him, McLeod retires.
Pete
Really do wonder what the plan down the middle is assuming Hayes is gone. If Chytil goes to the middle that means Howden and Anderson battling for 3rd and 4th line center. May the best man win in that situation but will be tough to swallow the potential of our #7 pick being a 4th liner (and not thrilled about 3rd line either for more than a season or two).
SN
Go Saints!!
(Too late?)
James G
Possibly some shady stuff happening in the bonehead hockey league.
Pete
do figure the leafs will need to trade nylander, but they made that job a little harder with the contract they gave him. Not that clear to me what kind of talent he really is yet and even more so on his own (i.e no matthews or marner) and you now have him at just under $7m/yr against the cap for the next 5 years before he becomes a UFA. Could end up being a bargain, but still more risk than usual for a player of that age given that cap hit
Old Ranger Fan
I don’t see Buch on the team next year. I forgot about Quickie. He would be a good acquisition for a good team that needs depth. I suspect he will be back though. No need for that UFA then. How about the D? Shatty, Skjei, Staal, Lundgren, Tony D, Libor, Pionk,

I’d be ok with Shattered-kirk getting traded. I would really like to see #77 get a real good look. He does always stick his nose in situations that require defending teammates.
You have to like that.
Hayes can go. Zucc can go. Staal if he will agree🙏 can go.
Would be monumentally foolhardy to trade Kreider.

Tampa would match any contract for Point, I think. There’s contracts there to shed- Coburn, Girardi, Stralman, Callahan, Tyler Johnson. All going to be playing elsewhere before they take priority over Point.
https://www.spectorshockey.net/2017/08/possible-nhl-salary-cap-recapture-candidates/
Couple of years ago but lists some of the biggies re possible cap recapture
I forgot about the minny duo
Of course every team is going to say they’ll match an offer sheet, why wouldn’t they?
But will they is an entirely different story.
Also, let us not forget that cap space is a very real tangy asset in the hard cap nhl.
The whole “gentleman’s agreement” to refrain from offer sheeting is basically collusion.
I don’t want a total free-for-all or anything, but some more RFA movement would make things a little spicier
I remember we offer sheeted Sakic and Colorado had a week or 10 days to match. They faxed a picture of a fist with the middle finger extended when they did the match (which they took the whole time to do so)
Heh I remember that Alex. Though weren’t they waiting to see if Air Force One could go #1 at the box office?
Elie cleared, I like him.
Paul on waivers from the sens…always an intriguing player to me.
i saw buch also covering the point when Pionk went down low

Chris Kreider (23:18) and Pavel Buchnevich (21:10) also established single-game career-highs in ice time tonight. In addition, Mika Zibanejad (25:24) was 26 seconds shy of tying his single-game career-high in ice time.
See ya.
McDonuts booed? Some real nitwits at the Garden for sure.
Somebody axe Staal what side of the ice he’s responsible for.
On Hayes – the past few years I was really on his case but the past year he has really matured both on and off the ice. Still sounds like a brick in interviews but at least what he does say is reasonable and on point. A year from now I suspect Bonehead nation (and others) will be clamoring about how we let him get away.
Reading the Carp, agree with most things DQ says but
was said about D’Anger.
I think it is time we stop calling those over 21 kids. If you want to say ‘young man’ then OK but kid no more.
Tell Carp to tell Quinn I’ll use kid to describe anyone I want I don’t care how old they are.
If I want to call BDL a kid, I will.
our old pals and their numbers
Step 23 pts in 51 games
Dubi 11 pts in 37 games
Cally 13 pts in 41 games
Brass 16 pts in 41 games
So, so true, Beezle 12:25. So true.
Amazing that Step lumbers down the ice into the Ozone before the play moves back into his end.
Those numbers really make you hesitate before signing on to long term contracts. Are all of those guys making $5 million +?
I think Mr. Pink can rest for a few and let Tony D shown what he has. He seems really bewildered at times like he is in over his hear.

All for getting young players instead of just picks, just not sure Hayes or Zuc brings back that good a prospect on their own. Unfortunately Kreider is still the only player who I think would bring back a great return player wise and reasons not to move him obviously.
My The Athletic subscription expired. Has it been a year? I barely ever go there (sorry Carp!)… should I pay up?
I don’t think it’s so easy for teams to match a 10.8 mil per 5 contract on a rfa as some think.
They might indeed match a contract like that or an even bigger one, but it will not come at no cost and the question will be is the maneuvering required to retain be worth it short and long term.
For some cap strapped teams, it’s a lot more difficult than some of you make it out to be.
It’s also why a lot of teams want to trade for guys that are signed past this year, cost certainty.
Cccp
Yes
I hear you wick, I just have a feeling Toronto doesn’t let either guy get away and nor does Tampa. Also Marner is from Ontario so would expect him to like being closer to home (and would guess a leafs fan growing up). Maybe Point is more flexible on that front but also doubt he wants to leave Tampa for a team that is far off like Arizona or even Florida
Florida supposedly intends to make a big splash an attempt to sign Panarin + Bobrovsky.
Guys I would like to see gone at the deadline.
Staal
Smith
Hayes
Zucc
Vesey
Pig oink
I still believe in Buchnevich!
James
Nylander will be traded
Gardiner and Hainsey will walk
they’ll dump Horton’ contract on a cap floor team
Zbad, K, Andersson, Chytil, Kratsov, Strome, Names, VC, Howden, two guys they get for Hayes and Zucc and a UFA they sign. It depends on who they get for Zucc and Hayes whether that group will be any better. Also how Andersson and Chytil improve and how good Kratsov is. Hope they are in a better situation next year and not just treading water and talking about who they will get for Kreider and maybe Zbad.
Starting 12 next season? In no particular order:
Zika, Kreider, Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Fast, Buchnevich, Kravtsov, Beleskey, Meskanen, And two trade targets (Donato, Frederic, Mangiapane, Appleton, Hintz, Foegele, whoever).
Sent too soon.
I think they trade Names and Vesey. I also think a Strome could be moved, especially to a team that wants to shed salary and then buy him out. Nieves bolts to a team that’ll play him, McLeod retires.
Go Saints!!
(Too late?)
Possibly some shady stuff happening in the bonehead hockey league.
do figure the leafs will need to trade nylander, but they made that job a little harder with the contract they gave him.
I don’t see Buch on the team next year. I forgot about Quickie. He would be a good acquisition for a good team that needs depth. I suspect he will be back though. No need for that UFA then. How about the D? Shatty, Skjei, Staal, Lundgren, Tony D, Libor, Pionk,
Kreidsdale Zibanejad Stone Strome
Kravtsov Chytil Buchnevich
(Donaro or Jost) Howden Appleton Fast Andersson
I’d be ok with Shattered-kirk getting traded. I would really like to see #77 get a real good look. He does always stick his nose in situations that require defending teammates.
You have to like that.
Hayes can go. Zucc can go. Staal if he will agree🙏 can go.
Would be monumentally foolhardy to trade Kreider.
Mcquaid and Smith can go.
Fast can go. Am I missing anyone?
Stone set to sign for 80 Million over 8 years? Duchene 72 Million over 8? If so, Zucc and Hayes’ prices are going up.
One thing is for certain. The fear to offend anybody has made the lamest most politically correct crop (crap?) of Superbowl commercials ever. Almost all are vapid and boring. Like the companies took $5-million and set on fire. Nothing really stands out. Except maybe Stella Artois.
Commercials like the game…..lame lame lame.
the football commercial where they’re throwing the ball around was good – dressed in suits
‘This One Means The Least Of All,’ Says Tom Brady Accepting Super Bowl Trophy.
The Onion.
admittedly, we didn’t watch the game.
We dvr’d it, fast forwarded to the commercials then deleted it already.
All I can say is the avengers and captain marvel movie trailers looked awesome!!!
Carp’s new article says what I said all along, not a full long term rebuild.
Quick turnaround (Boston style time frame) restock and leaning heavily on free agents!
One of these days you guys will learn to listen to me 😉

I missed the stupor bowl, no regrets, imagine that. I would rather watch paint dry!
I’d rather watch Drury paint.
I always listen to you, Wicky.
Drury paint! LOL!
I almost fell off the toilet bowl just now.
