Good morning, boneheads!
First of all, big thank you to everyone who participated last night and helped to close this ugly page that has been rotting this place for some time now. Let’s not go back, it’s in the past.
As for the game. I can watch a game like that every night. Filled with emotions, hits, hard battles. Some skill too. The scores are irrelevant at the moment, even though it always hurts to lose the way they did. First game in a long while that they desrved to win.
The structure is still nowhere near what it should be, but I saw some baby steps. I will let Carp do his thing, but I have one question. Has Pionk’s game deteriorated enough to sit him for a game or two? I think so.

Repeat last night.
Isles bring Trotz in, install a conservative 1-2-2 structure and lo and behold, their Defense which has no Norris candidates and a couple of has been goalies, is one of the best this season.

DQ comes in and installs an aggressive 2 man forecheck and the NYR D is exposed all game long. At least he got away from the 1v1 I zone D that AC had used to a match up in zone structure.
Trotz is a good coach. But he couldn’t win a Cup in Nashville for years with one of the better defensemen in the league. Nashville has been known to draft and develop excellent D-men. He finally won one with one of the most potent offensive group in the league. I don’t think you’re implying Gorton should’ve hired him instead of Quinn. My opinion, Trotz wouldn’t be the right coach on Broadway. Maybe in a few years. I doubt he will make the Fishsticks true contenders either any time soon.
I’ll say this much- exposed or unexposed this defense is pretty wretched.
JamesG- surprised? Right after they traded the only first pair guy they had last year, it was obvious this is going to be painful to watch. At least they addressed this weakness by drafting going forward.
By the way, things are getting ugly in Columbus. Chances of Bobrovsky re-signing ( hi, Coos 🙂 ) are similar to me becoming a GM in NY. If you think that doesn’t affect Panarin’s decision, think again. Free beer for life in local brewery isn’t going to cut it.

The make up of this roster is poor. It’ll improve over time. But for right now doesn’t matter if it was
Trotz, Quinn, Montgomery, Quenville…this team as constructed wasn’t going to be competing for the wild card
Fully expect Panarin and probably Silfverberg to be here next year. That plus Kravtzov should put an end to the RW depth issue. Only leaves 3 positions up in the air
I only got to watch the last 10 minutes live. Boy, I could see that Bailey goal happen a mile away. The Staal and Pionk pairing has to go.
Otherwise, it was a great third period.

I hate the Islanders. Always want to beat them. But the loss is a better result. Also watching the Johnson/Martin/ McLeod shannigans, brings back memories of the bad old days of PJ stock, Mathew Barnaby etc. it’s very difficult to watch right now.
Good morning Boneheads welcome to Friday! Sorry I missed all the fun last night spent some quality time with the wife. I caught the 2nd & 3rd on my cell. At least they tried but again found another way to lose. Kreider had some good looks, just wish he wold stop trying to shoot through the goalie. I will add one more thing, lack of a competent management team! I know the jury is still out somewhat, but I’m leaning in that direction. Man do I hope I am wrong
I’m not as upset with the result as I thought I’d be. At least they beat them once already this season. Saturday is another game.
And it may get even tougher to watch after the deadline, BDL.
BDL, no conflict here. I wanted them to win that game. We can lose 60 games without having to lose to the Islanders. Normally I’d also include the Flyers and Devils, but seeing as how they are now below us in the standings, those are also must-lose contests.

Yeah, that’s the thing, it didn’t bother me as much as it normally would. The Islanders are fake. They are a one and done team. I know they are not winning the cup, so the loss did not bother me as much. Plus i actually find myself laughing every time Chytil loses the puck in the neutral zone. It’s the same thing every time. He gets a full head of steam, and skates right into the opposition and loses the puck. How is this allowed to continue to happen?

Brett Cyrgalis from the post thinks that the Islanders won because Trotz dressed Johnston and Martin. It’s going to absolutely useless to read the Post after Brooks decides to hang ’em up.

I think it may be easier to watch after the deadline. I find myself feeling sorry for the guys(Zucc included) who were here during all the winning, having to go through this. Once they are all gone, and the team is turned over to the younger players, it may actually be easier to watch.

Rick Nash walking away. Good for him – he was never really right after that concussion a few years back.
Hayes and Kreider are a hot topic but if the Isles have their 2C, Nelson, and 1LW, Lee up for new deals. After letting JT get away, can they afford to lose one or both.

Much better efforts the last two games, but, they have to stop making the same mistakes over and over again. Fixing the PK should be job 1 at this point. No reason they have to be 27th in the league. Unskilled players can be good PKers. This is something coaching staff should be able to improve in the short term with the current roster. They all suck is not a valid excuse.

If you watch the play where Ruff takes puck in noggin, it was Clutterfuk who tipped puck into NYR bench and the play could be intentional if you watch what he did and his reaction.
Know what I can’t stand? (You Do because I’ve said this before) the twitter feed for the Rangers offical site. They could lose 80 in a row and every headline would read something like this:
“Jesper Fast has two assists but the Rangers lose to Calgary 12-2”
Quickie is a lot tougher than some people give him credit for.
James, my peeve is “Lundqvist makes 32 saves but Rangers fall to Calgary.” I don’t think any statistic tells you less than number of saves unless it’s accompanied by a “shots” stat.

Too bad about Rick Nash. The guy was a player when the Rangers acquired him. Unfortunately, head shots did him in. He became a perimeter player, and much less effective as a result. The other shame is that most of the head shots he suffered were not penalized by a league (and a players union) who refuse to police them. Who knows…..if the head shots would not have happened until after the final against the Kings, the Rangers might have won the cup. By that time, Nash was playing on the perimeter already. Regardless, I hope he gets well and is able to live a normal life with his family.
Not aiming for coach’s head but misdirecting a flat on ice pass into opponent’s bench with no defender on him.

Well the Nash trade looks pretty good now. I also don’t believe the narrative that Gorton was too busy to trade Zucc at the deadline. I think there just wasn’t a deal on the table he was interested in. He could have delegated it to Drury who would have closed the deal by throwing a peperoni pizza as long as it didn’t ruin his weekend.

The big hit on Nash was v San Jose when the Brad Stuart with a 10 stride head start popped with a direct elbow to the noggin and AV told everyone to turn the other cheek and play whistle to whistle.
Best of luck to Nash… injuries impacted him and could have provided more offense but he always played hard and was usually their best forward. Agree that trade looks even better now. Question is who goes Boston next month….Hayes or Kreider…or both?
good find SN. I remember that play. Nash was playing well early in season up until then. I believe he even fought some guy on the Ducks I believe that ran stepan. Then the Sharks game changed things.

If they win another cup and we don’t end up with a top 3 pick, well I may be ready for the rubber room. I hate the pens! The Minx has spoken!
As I said in my comment after the last game, (minutes before Brooks’ article was released in the Post), I’d consider sending down Chytil, Georgiev and even Howden. Hajek, Andersson and Lindgren are already down there. Bring up guys like Beleskey, Tokarsky, Cole Schneider, Fogarty, Holland, Letieri. As guys get traded, the more of older Hartford players you bring up. Try to build a winning culture in Hartford Would that amount to a tank in New York? Maybe.
I know that Carp said they won’t tank, but to me the primary goal would be developing the kids.

@ilb: Pionk is probably tired physically and mentally. This is his first full season and at the moment ranks #38 in the league in TOI. Next on NYR are SkjeL at #80 and MC Z at #140. That’s asking a lot of the kid.

On the comparison of what DairyQueen is doing with our defense compared to what Trotz has done – I really think you are looking apples to oranges. Isles are suppose to be competing at least for a playoff spot so it makes sense he does what ever he thinks is necessary to get them there. NYR are developing players. In the end, maybe none will be able to play the way DQ wants and some other teams do. Going the Trotz route at this stage seems to me like minimizing upside and settling for good enough.
Tom – 100%; been advocating that for a while. NHL is not a training league, that is what the AHL is for. If you have a good team with solid front line players, you can sprinkle the yutes in the mix, but feeding them to the proverbial wolves with their diapers on is not a development strategy but lunacy.
Add the rookie coach in the mix who wants to win now, there are obvious countervailing forces.

Some perspective on the whole drafting issue: The NYR should be better, especially given how much money they can throw at scounting compared to other teams. However, keep in mind there are 713 players in the bigs at any one time and every season 217 more are drafted + free agent kid signings. At the end of the day, there are a lot of busts and disappointments and quite a few mehs for every team.

The Lightning are leading the league. But it isn’t because of miller and his 7 goals. Or Mac and his whopping 2 power play points this year.

Even having a bit of a slump, Barzal is better than anyone the Rangers have up front. Plus they have an actual NHL blueline.
But Trotz has won 7 more games than Quinn this year. So it was a mistake to hire Quinn.

The NHL, like every sport, is a developmental league at some level. Or are we to believe every rookie is fully developed at call up and needs no further instruction the remainder of their career? And the players all know exactly what to do so coaches will be replaced by a computer that spits out line ups and line changes on the fly! And Benoit only tells Hank how pretty his hair looks!
The real question is when is a player ready to begin competing against a higher caliber opponent in their ongoing development.
Just to piggy back off of Alex’s comments it’s also been 43 years 7 months 2 weeks and 2 days since the Flyers last Cup. So there’s that.
Agree 1000%, Beezle. “Developmental league” are fightin’ words around here this year but you broke it down perfectly.
Some players need more time than others. Some players do really well and hit a wall. Some look lost and come back the next season like a bat out of hell. Considering the make up of this roster I think it’s unfortunate that some of these guys have been put in the position they’re in. But I also think it will be beneficial in the long run to adapt to the caliber of competition and the NHL pace

I understand that Pionk is dinged up but man, I guess the D isn’t going to develop any kind of consistency this season.
Don’t get me wrong they’d be putrid either way but at least if there was a top 4 -hell-even a top 2 pairing, they could keep things together and rotate guys in and out on the third pair. Staal is the only mainstay. What a season!

Who are the Islander’s Norris trophy candidates? they rank 3rd best in Goals Against in the NHL with the same group that was LAST the prior season; LAST!!!!. Only difference is the coach and no JT.

There is absolutely zero way to prove what players need from a development standpoint, it is all extremely subjective.
The Rangers made a decision to keep Cheadle up in the bigs regardless of on ice performance, that much can be surmised by what has been observed to this point. He sat out 1 game, just one.

This was a throw away season. Could have brought in a ready to rumble 4th line and forecheckers and grinders on the 3rd and used the DQ North-South approach while the pups received needed seasoning on the farm and the rookie coach got his sea legs underneath him in the bigs.
