Rangers-4, Senators-2

Published by

Good morning, boneheads!

Kudos to MSG for making this night for many kids and adults who suffered, or still suffering from cancer, special. Was nice to be there and share the moment.

As for the game? Remember a couple of nights ago , against Washington, we said they won’t lose too many if they played like that? Well, they won’t win too many if they play the way they played last night. Ottawa is just a disaster in their own zone. But so were the Rangers. Sloppy coverage, wishful passes. Neutral zone turnovers. Let’s hope they clean it up, because this could lead to a long losing streak.

Zibanejad was their best forward by a mile, and he deserved that ENG.

Chytil looks very impressive in the offensive zone. If a defender doesn’t close up on him right away, they are in trouble. His passing is excellent, he almost set up Kreider for another goal from behind the net in the second. He has ways to go, as expected from a 19 yr old. His positioning in the O-zone, oftentimes, is such that he requires a battle against the boards to turn around. And he loses these battles too often still. And I’m not even going to start talking about his defensive game.

I find it much more difficult to evaluate small details of a game when I see it live, as opposed to from my couch. Carp, however, can do it ways better than any of us even if he does it from Eddie’s can.

Was nice to see it as usual, Rick!

Nice to see Bruins going to retire Rick Middelton Jersey. Worst trade of last 50 years. Bruins get Hall of Famer who score’s over 400 goals; we get POS with 23 goals scored. I guess Espo was happy. Beside 79 Canadiens be an all world team,I still think Espo was one of the main reasons we did not win the cup in 1979. I never booed a Ranger in my life; but with Espo, Hodge and the rest of the garbage that came from Boston it was close.

    At practice today:
    Vesey/Hayes/Chytil
    Kreider-Zika-Strome

Assuming that leaves Howden between Fast and Lias and then Fogarty and Gettinger left over while rolling 7 D

One more injury on the wing and they’re really going to be a mess.

    A bit touchy?

I mean the majority of posts were about nylander, Hayes vs Zibanejad (and subsequently potential deadline deals), 7 d men dressing possibly, and some people “raving” about the greatest pass in nhl history.

Admittedly, I should have included zucc’s groun and a beleskey update in my novel, but I didn’t feel it necessary.

Sorry if the “ chytil fanboys” comment affected you so deeply.

‘Stock Market is just totally baffling in its erratic fluctuations.’

    Not baffling, caused by tech.

    Look up High Frequency Trading.

And yes, that’s a thing, and yes, it’s the root cause of huge swings in the market.

And the biggest reason I won’t put money in stocks anymore unless I could go really long term (minimum 5 years) on a stock, and unfortunately, tying up my money really long term isn’t a realistic strategy for me anymore.

It’s the people who have the money and direct connections to the exchanges, making short term bets (and making playing the market a suicide mission for the small investor) and playing a zero sum game with the rest of the investor world in doing so.

Watch the trades, the algorithm will buy a huge block of shares, 50,000 minimum, pre-opening, the stock will tick up, the market opens and the algorithm sells on the uptick. Meanwhile, the investors who bought that stock on the uptick, thinking it’s a genuine value increase, will get stuck with the downtick as their buy order goes in frozen on the uptick but the downtick is already occurring due to the selloff Rinse and repeat all day. The algorithm’s decide when to buy and when to sell, 100% pure, untouched by human hands.

You’re the one complaining about an erratic, I believe you said ‘baffling’ market. If you are aware of high frequency trading, why is it baffling? It’s completely, rationally understandable given the way the market is being gamed these days. These people don’t invest, they just game the system. And if you’re losing, they’re gaming you.

1- Before you leave, I’m told I have quite a bit of snow available to shovel when I head back north later today or tomorrow. You wouldn’t want to go to Florida without one last go at it!

2- Careful what you wish for with a condo or similar. I’ve actually gone the other direction after tiring of having people living on top of me and generally being asshats that I couldn’t avoid. Also – if you buy into a townhome or similar that is HOA, be very careful to understand not only the covenants (hoa agreement) but any board promulgated rules *before* putting anything down. And ask people living their what its really like. Some of these have tyrants running the show who want to be all up inside of your biz 24/7. And don’t forget to check the financials (hoa or condo) in addition to asking what capital expenditures are planned/needed over the next 5-10 years. If they look at you with a blank face, run away.

Something tells me we’re not going to be pleased with the Zucc trade return, no matter when it happens. Right now, I’m feeling R2 + late rounder + minor leaguer is the market price. Hope I’m wrong.

Pronman @ TheAthletic did a prospect live chat earlier in the week. Some tidbits:

    – He’s now giving Kravtsov the edge over Wahlstrom
    – His only concern with K’Andre Miller was offense, and so far Miller’s showing he’s fine offensively.
    – Still doesn’t like Nils Lundkvist for where he was drafted.
    – He needs to see Howden keep it up for a full year before he’ll admit he was wrong about his ceiling.
    – Andersson has more offense than he’s showing, and thinks he needs to be playing in Hartford.

On Lias- I agree. Chytil is getting the opportunity here to play important minutes. Lias is part of the log jam at center. Only problem is the team has 4 guys injured right now and the only guys that can compete at the NHL level from Hartford are all centers (except Beleskey and Gettinger) So even if Lias goes down theyre going to wind up bringing up Holland or Fontaine to go along with Fogarty. Don’t see how that helps in the long run.

    Have you kids seen this?

“A trade appears to be the most likely outcome. I guess am prepared for it,” Zuccarello said. “Basically, I’m just waiting for it to happen. It’s a tough spot to be in, if I’m being honest.” The 31 year old fan favorite didn’t stop there and his next words will surely sting even more.

“I’ve always said that I only ever want to play for the New York Rangers, but I’ve been thinking … I’m getting older and maybe I could use a new spark”. That new spark would be going to a contender and having a chance to add a Stanley Cup to his career. Still, Zuccarello admitted that it won’t be easy when the day comes.

“It will be a very sad day, of course. I’ve been here a long time and know everyone in the organization, so it will be very sad. But I also think that it can be a positive thing, if it happens. You can get a spark from trying something new.”

    More To the Story
Roy told me that this is a two part story and more info will be coming out. He specifically said it will be focused on Zuccarello’s future contract. “I feel that I’ve been consistent enough that any clubs who wants to sign me, knows what they’ll get,” Zuccarello explained. “I’ve never evaluated my game based on points”.

Only problem is Pionk’s ceiling is clearly higher than Brady’s at this point. He’s showing himself to be a better PP QB than both Shatty and DeAngelo at this point and while his defensive zone decisions need work he’s still marginally better than the veteran Skjei more times than not. Maybe Brady can turn it around and anti AV himself. But in the present If Gorton is trying to improve the team the better deal is SkjeL going and Pionk staying.

    For your Zuc debating pleasure:

    since 2012: #148 g/60, #31 a/60 min 300 games
    since 2016: #258 g/60, #52 a/60 min 100 games
    since 2017: #266 g/60, #93 a/60 min 50 games (pigoink #150 a/60)

I’m not sensing a big haul for Topo. Maybe a 2nd rounder. Or a 3rd line type prospect and late round pick.

    James,
You made a very strong case as to why Toronto would prefer Pionk to Skjei. Toss in he’s a right shot D, something that is very sought after be teams.

Bobby I think I missed something. Are you saying they can’t keep Kreider and Nylander if they were to trade for him? Or just that Kreider should go in a trade for Nylander?

Kreider isn’t up for a contract until 20-21 season. At that point it’s the final year of the Hank contract and the last year of Staal’s which will be bought out by then if not before. That’s about 15 million coming off the books. Extending him shouldn’t be much of a problem.

And quite honestly my opinion on it goes back to something John Davidson said to me once. It’s always about what you have to give in order to get. If Nylander would cost you Kreider and Panarin would cost you nothing but money then I think the situation speaks for itself.

My normal reaction to a story like the Zucc story would be, screw you Zucc, you don’t want to be here, good riddance. But he’s right. And it has to be tough for him to go through.
As far as value goes, on his own, same as Grabner. A second and a prospect.

BobbyO: Looking at the past two years, THE is the better goal scorer, Nylander the better at assists. #38 (Nylander) vs #61 THE in points/60 since 2016. The question I have is.. does Nylander fit in the DairyQueen system? Or is he going to be an uppity Swede?

  136. James G Avatar
    James G

Absolutely, BDL. But that’s also a strong case for Gorton not to hurt the team. Given the surplus of LHD and the lack of RHD in the Rangers organization you’d have to try your best to make it Skjei. Not that TO wanting Pionk is a deal breaker, but it can easily become a repeat of the decision to extend Girardi /Staal while letting Stralman walk.
Don’t really want to see Pionk QB’ing a top 5 PP for TO for the next 10 years while we discuss when it makes sense to buyout Brady.

And again, consider this- If Nylander is going to cost you Pionk and Panarin is only going to cost you money…

  137. cooscoos Avatar

Why would they buy out Staal when Carp and fifty posters here think he’s the best thing since sliced pumpernickel?

Zucc has always been honest in interviews and I see nothing wrong with what he said. He’s seen all of his friends except Staal and Hank traded away and has always known the business side of hockey.

Lest we forget how much of a team player he was waiting his turn to sign his contracts to allow Brassard and hags to get signed etc.

There is a reason he is a fan favorite and his effort and team first mentality has more to do with it than his diminutive size.

So please, stop disparaging a guy who has worked his tail off and been team leader in points and grew into quite the player from Undrafted FA just because that wasn’t enough for you or you wanted him to play a different style.

The dude knows how to play hockey….and that’s a fact

I think a playoff team would welcome him as a depth middle six with tons of playoff experience. He is sturdy on his skates and can make plays. Also very helpful leading up to playoff seeding on SHootouts to get that extra point. Also a well liked guy that won’t disrupt a locker room.

Bull dog, I give Zucc a pass for those comments. First you have to consider context and then you have to realize it must be a real bummer no matter how great the organization and fans are to you. You spend a chunk of your career competing for the Cup with close friends and teammates then watch as they’re traded one by one and management shifts it’s attention to a rebuild with a style that’s the polar opposite of your own. I give him hell but he’s been a good Ranger. Tough situation

Toronto can’t trade for skjei and 1 of those 2 forwards

One or the other plus entry level desk types and draft picks

With m and m plus Tavares they’re up against the cap starting next year big time

If Nylander could do what Kreider can along the wall and in the crease, plus scare the crap out of Dmen when he turns on the afterburners, I might consisder it. He is on pace for at least30+ goals. Would I rather have Nylander than Skjei, Andersson, and DeAngelo? Maybe!

  148. BobbyO Avatar

saying Kreider would go in a trade for Nylander to make it attractive to Toronto. Kreider contract is up after season so we’re talking lengthy expensive contract where he will be 34 or 35 when it ends. Panerin would be similar situation in that he’ll be 28 and need to be signed 5-7 years but he’s gonna cost 10M per. Nylander is 22 and he would come in at 7M or 8M range. just something that Gorton may think about

I respect and appreciate what Zucc did as part of the 14/15 Ranger runs. I still think to this day, that if Zucc hadn’t gotten hurt, they are in the finals again in 15. That was a heck of a team. But Zucc hasn’t been the same since the injury, and the trading of his buddies. It’s probably a season to late in trading him.

If they start moving “vets” with term (Zibanejad, shattenkirk, etc) in trades you might be right.

Buying out guys with bad contracts and moving guys on expiring deals regardless of where they play in the lineup is just good asset management (or correcting mistakes from before ;))

A #NYR spokesman talked to Zuccarello about @kvatningen’s story, which people clipped out of context, saying that he’s waiting to be traded. Zuccarello said it’s not what he said and not how he feels, but he’s prepared for anything in the last year of a contract.
