Rangers-3, Kings-4

Good morning, boneheads!

Can anyone put a positive spin on this one? I can’t, and I usually find a few here and there.

Here is Carp’s review. He is lucky he doesn’t root for them. And we benefit from it at the end.

Looking at Toronto’s prospect pool they could certainly do with a boost of nearly NHL ready D and a potential #1 Goalie. You could in theory deal Igor but then you’re hanging your hat on Adam Huska being the long term Hank replacement instead of having options. Anything they do will need to be cost controlled though so i don’t see any of Kreider, ZBad, Zuke or Hayes being involved. Maybe Names or Vesey or Butch though

I would think zucc would be attractive to Toronto…probably more than Kreider due to the difference in contract status of the two and Toronto having a couple of big $$$$ contracts that will be signed and start next season.

Idk, Wick. Zucc is a rental player and 30+ years old. They have Marner and Kapanen at RW. Plus they have Connor Brown who is a nice depth player.
    If I’m Dubas I wouldn’t give Zuccarello a moment’s consideration but that’s just me

Know what a good destination would be for Zucc? St Louis.Or maybe Minnesota. Somewhere where the roster is veteran heavy and he can play as depth instead of as a “need to be top six”

Anders Lee or Panarin? both may cost about the same; different players, at least different sized players… Lee still producing without JT (now has Barzal). Still though, how many 40 goal scorers are going to be on the market?? Has 78 goals in his last 173 games (27 on PP).

I’m not sour on him, I like the kid, he’s just being overrated and overhyped.

I understand chytil is young etc etc. There are just two things many fans seem to not realize or just ignore…

He doesn’t look comfortable on the bigger ice and doesn’t seem to have the tenacity/drive or whatever you want to call it for any sort of sustained time. He looks out of place.

Second, all you heard is he’s this elite offencive talent. Usually elite offencive talent will put up points even at a younge age. They also generally make line mates better. He hasn’t always been with McLeod and the points aren’t there.

He’s talented and young and not used to big ice, but he also isn’t exactly lighting it up.

Just because many fans are desperate for elite talent on the rangers doesn’t mean you overvalue good talent and make it untouchable.

Agreed Wick- and just because a 19 year old kid who they drafted in the first round hasn’t been a natural scorer to this point on a bad team doesn’t mean he’s going to be closer to average than elite. It’s just about proceeding with caution. To me anyhow. Otherwise you get Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson trades.

  28. DaveB Avatar
    DaveB

I hear ya Wicky. As far as his comfort level – agreed. It’s not there yet. But he’s 19 years old, and he’s not Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel-level. The comfort will come. Your second point is a direct result of the first point. Saying that…I can definitely be convinced that Chytil might benefit from big minutes in the AHL. But as far as removing him from the “untouchable” list – I’m still not there. I’ve seen enough spurts from him that I’m fully confident he will eventually be as advertised.

BobbyO, I just don’t see it. Are we talking about a hypothetical trade exclusively between NYR and TO?
If it’s in a vacuum where we are just talking about the Rangers roster then yes, Zibanejad may draw some attention.
However, there are obviously other teams that would be making calls about Nylander. I have no idea (obviously) which teams or which prospects /players they’d be willing to trade but I’m willing to bet that someone could offer a hell of a lot more than we have to offer. Look at what Ottawa gave up for Duchene. It goes to show that a GM who knows what he’s doing will hold out for the best deal possible. Gorton isn’t going to fleece someone like Dubas for a player like Nylander.

you need to be bold when making a big deal. The number 1 chip NYR has is Henk. 11 games into the season, is he rethinking the good soldier approach to the rebuild? Cmon, he deserves the Cup (and the Toronto media…)

JamesG we can offer a top 6 forward in either Zibanajad or Kreider and top young top 4 defenseman. Skjej..not sure how many other teams can do that right now,…clock is ticking on Dubas since he needs to get some clarity by December if wants to add pieces for a cup run

  42. James G Avatar
    James G

Bobby the point I’m trying to stress is that the “top 6” and “top 4” categories differ drastically roster to roster. And teams who have interest in Nylander more than likely have better players in those categories to offer a team like Toronto. More effective NHL players. Prospects with higher ceilings.
Our “top 4” defense is a lot different than Nashville’s. The Rangers’ “top 6” probably has 2 guys that belong to that category on other teams. Those two players happen to be Kreider and Zibanejad. You could argue that Zibanejad would be a third line center on the teams that are a power house down the middle.
Hypothetically- why would Dubas make a deal for Skjei and Zibanejad if a team like Edmonton for instance offered someone like Puljujarvi and Nurse?

JamesG sure they differ but the teams with most interest in Nylander are most likely in contention (Preds/Jets etc) and not going to part with young valuable roster players and Dubas needs those types of players to address current roster and defense if they want to take the next step this year. All I’m saying is Rangers and some of their players may be a fit

I think if you draft a guy that is supposedly an elite offencive talent and he doesn’t overwhelm you with points in the AHL or score at a decent rate in limited time in the nhl, you “might” have a problem.

He reminds me of some of those guys that light it up in juniors and people say “wow he can score” we’re taking him and then they realize he was elite at that level but is just good at the “next” level.

I’m not saying he’s average, I think he can eventually put up 40 or so points in an nhl season if he gets a bit more consistency and drive, which isn’t terrible.

I think he can be good, but looks considerably less of an nhl caliber player at this point than the other two forwards.

Of course it can change, but he be far from untouchable to me (don’t really think anyone should be untouchable in the organization).

I think Buchnevich has been performing like he has been for his entire brief career. Like he’s entitled to something. Sorry Doodie, but this is not on Quinn, this is on Buchnevich. I know it’s fun to bash McLeod, but this has nothing to do with McLeod. This is all about Buchnevich refusal to compete. It’s that simple, COMPETE!

BDL, you’re looking too narrowly. He isn’t the only guy with a compete problem. But he’s the only guy that is getting benched consistently. Zibanejad loafs around most nights. So does Zuke. So does Hayes. And how many nights is Kreider invisible? Vesey tries hard most nights but usually stinks. I thought DQ was supposed to help develop the youth. Playing McLeod and the other uninspiring veterans accomplishes that?

  58. Bdl Avatar

Cody McClown did such a fine job helping the Rangers blow the game in Los Angeles, why not dress him again in San Jose……..a team that is much faster and more highly skilled. This does not make sense to me at all. To me, this is not about Buchnevich. No problem with the coach not dressing him if he is not performing. I just have a problem with McLeod being on the roster at all. I just don’t see what benefit he brings.

  61. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Do you know why McLeod has been in the NHL for 12 seasons, and 700 games. It’s because every shift he gives everything he’s got. If that means taking a few punches for the team, he does. If it means finishing every check he can, he does it. If it means crashing the net, and getting sticked in the face, he does it. In other words, he COMPETES! I get the man has zero hockey skills. But he gives everything he’s got. Oh by the way, his career high in goals for a season is 15. That’s one more than Buchnevich career high.😀

    1) If you scratched every guy under performing you wouldn’t have enough guys to play a game.

    2) Unfortunately this entire season is going to be a pissing match back and forth between McLeod haters and Buchnevich critics.

    3) Playing McLeod over Buchnevich is idiotic. So is using Chytil between McLeod and Fast. So is continuously playing Marc Staal and Kevin Shattenkirk every night. I don’t really care if you agree or disagree because obviously this is just how this season is going to be.

    4) Quinn isn’t a dud. Quinn is a “y” coach and his players are “z”s and “Fs” Jim Montgomery is .500 in Dallas with a roster 10x as talented. Guess he’s a dud too

I’m saying he’s a dud because he is treating the roster the same way as every other retread coach would. Why not bench Zbad? Why not bench Zuke? I care far less that McLeod is playing than I do that other guys don’t have to sit but Buchnevich repeatedly has to.

  70. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

It’s about Buchnevich, not McLeod. Sorry that so hard to understand. They cannot continue to allow the try hard when I feel like mentality to continue. The guys who will not compete on a nightly basis will be fazed out. And they better be careful with exposing Chytil to this. There has been more than one time recently that he has barely tried to come back and play D. He’s already sampled the Zucc long shift. Forget what I said above. This is not about McLeod. This is about a culture change. I for one applaud Quinn for doing this.

BDL, I’m not saying Buch has played great. Far from it. But what message are you sending to the other underperformers and to Buchnevich when he is the only guy being disciplined? If he wants to send a message, don’t whip the previous coach’s whipping boy, whip the golden boys like Zuke or Zbad.

Buchnevich still has 5 points in 10 games in not much ice time. Vesey and Hayes only have 3 in 11, playing a lot more and with better linemates. Hayes was benched a period. That’s it.

Ok So it’s not about McLeod it’s about Buchnevich over and over and over? When’s it going to stop being about either of them and start being about the veterans on this team that have been just as bad? I’d applaud Quinn if he sent Staal to the AHL. I’d applaud him if he sat Zibanejad or Hayes and called up Lias. I’m not applauding him for singling out a 23 year old forward who has the same issue as the supposed “leaders” on this team..

BDL you aren’t wrong about Zibanejad. And I see your point about Zucc and Hayes and probably even Vesey.
But what about the guys that are here beyond this year? Spooner, Staal, Shatty, Smith, Kreider. Those guys are just as much of a problem if they don’t find a way to be consistent and effective in both their effort/compete levels and their positional capabilities.
I know this will get turned into a “no such thing as a losing culture” argument but the fact remains that when you have a coach scratching guys every night and a team starts 3-11 and can’t get it together there’s a mentality that trickles down to the younger guys when they see the veterans’ compete level and attitudes. Quinn needs to be careful with his decisions and which buttons he presses. Sit some of the guys mentioned up top.

This team is a mess but it’s a rebuild, the only thing I’m looking forward to this year is what Gorton does before the trade deadline. Hopefully he can unload veteran players and stock pile more draft picks and or prospects. The problem I have though with draft picks is Gordie Clarke and his scouts need to go and Gorton needs to fix that part of the organization because lets face it, ranger’s drafting hasn’t been good over the years.

Nailed it Wick. McLeod is inserted by Quinn to promote effort and compete in his mates. Soooo obvious. Sad that it doesn’t work. The only man who dresses here who will throw a check with vigor.

If gorton only gets prospects and picks in deals he makes, then he should be fired immediately.

Picks are a huge gamble. We all have seen this organization reach far more often than nail a pick.

Gorton needs to make hockey trades. If they get prospects, they need to get established ones that have seen nhl time.

All picks and non nhl experienced prospects is a waste of assets and a reckless management.

Get players not maybes (yes you can use picks to get Nhl players, that’s smart management), some picks and/or prospects are fine, just can’t go 100% of all picks/prospects.

I mean, I agree – at some point we need to trade for NHL players. But if we’re going for good, talented, gritty, championship-type players…how are we supposed to trade for them if (supposedly) all we have are middling, soft players of questionable compete level? To make said trades work, we’d need to dip into the prospect pool and start moving good prospects…but how’d we get said prospects? From the draft picks we’re supposed to fire Gorton for acquiring?

IMHO – unless it’s a slam dunk (ie Nylander for less than we think it’d take), it doesn’t make sense to go after NHLers yet. Especially in a season that’s supposed to be chalked up to a loss (and definitely looks like it’s going to fulfill that promise). Even though nobody will say so, the tank is what management wants. They want Hughes, or at the very least a top 3 guy. Once we walk out of the next draft with our top prospect, and we sign Panarin, we see how our prospects look with a year under their belts…then it’s time for some hockey deals. But until then – I’m fine with the picks/prospects that placeholder middle-sixers like Spooner will net us.

If you look at teams who have won the cup over the years, they have at least one lottery pick player so until the rangers get at least one top lottery game changer player, I don’t see them winning any cups in the future.

You do not have to have a lottery pick to win.

You have to draft well with the picks you have, that will help tremendously.

wick, I thought you said fire gorton if he trades for picks and prospects, which one is it and good luck with drafting well, Gordie Clarke and his band of merry man scouts have not done a good job with drafting.

Acquiring picks/prospectsplayers via trade is a lot like roster make up, it’s not all one way or the other…it has to be a mix, which was my point.

Acquiring ONLY picks and prospects without nhl experience, would be just dumb and a waste of assets.

And just because we experts here think every player on this roster sucks and is terrible, it does not mean they actually suck and have no value to the actual nhl experts on their respective teams.

As I said in his very first appearance, Buch is not a real NHL type of player and will never be. Tired to explain why. “Enigmatic”, finesse , “good hands”, “hockey smart”, etc., everything but…something missing genetically. Very unfortunate, but fact.
Funny, but D’Angelo slightly reminds me Avery light. Sometimes fun to watch, his after whistle curriculums.
So far the biggest disappointment is Kreider – not playing by expectation, when ol’ Zuc is smart and solid self, even defensively.

  124. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

also, you have to almost win before you can win. That is, you have to win three playoff rounds before you can with a fourth. etc. So it’s not horseshoes. The team that wins three rounds most certainly and without question did better than the team that didn’t win three rounds. Or two. Or one. Or any.

as I speculated the other day, and has been confirmed by Brooksie in LA, DeAnger was the cause of the too-many-men. Before we put him up for the Norris based on his bad-angled goal. And yes, I thought he played well, and loved his snarl.

A man in a Florida supermarket tries to buy half a head of lettuce.

The very young produce assistant tells him they only sell whole heads of lettuce. The man persists and asks to see the manager. The boy says he’ll ask his manager about it.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, “Some ahole wants to buy half a head of lettuce.” As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, “And this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.”

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.

Later the manager said to the boy, “I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?”

“Canada, sir” the boy replied. “Well, why did you leave Canada?” the manager asked.

The boy said “Sir, there’s nothing but hockey players and hookers up there.”

“Really?” said the manager. “My wife is from Canada.”

“No sht?” replied the boy. “Who’d she play for?”

I thought the torts team that lost in the ECF is the one that needed the offencive game changer.

The torts residual team that lost in the finals needed their goalie to out play the other goalie…it didn’t happen.

wicky, funny you said that about the high light reel because when the rangers traded for Nash I didn’t like Nash, didn’t think he was anything special but a poster stated go on youtube and check out his highlights which is ridiculous because I could go on youtube and any player will look great when your showing a hand full of that players highlights.

Nash was a MONSTER in the highlights.

The Torts team in ’12 also needed more than nine forwards and four D. It sure didn’t have more than that.

Ironic thing about Nash, in retrospect, is that when he was flying the zone and scoring 40 a year on breakaways he wasn’t a complete player. As soon as he became a complete player the breakaways went away and so did the big offensive seasons.
