Good morning, boneheads!
I’m back from a short hiatus that I would much rather not take. People close to me know that over a period of two weeks or so both my wife and I lost our fathers. But life goes on. And knowing my 92 year old dad, and my wife’s father, that’s exactly what they would like us to do. Back to normal life. That includes hockey. Thanks to all my friends for your good wishes during this difficult time.
Another sad news during my absence. Charles Wang passed away. And while most of us remember him as the owner on NY Islanders, he will definitely be remembered mostly for his charitable work. Especially for establishing ( and maintaining ) the Smile Train almost 20 years ago. While not without controversies, at around 82% program efficiency, this organization performed well over 1,000,000 corrective cleft lip and palate surgeries around the world. I wish I could do more with them than I did, but I know firsthand that this simple ( for us, Westerners ) surgery is a life changer for kids who otherwise can’t have it. The Smile Train is also known for not only performing surgeries but also for training local doctors, and supplying them with essentials, so that the surgeries can continue locally afterwards. RIP Charles Wang.
I understand there were some fireworks on the blog while I was away. I’m very reluctant to go back and see precisely what happened. At least not now. But I would ask everyone, again, to please be civil. People who maintain this place do not need to spend extra time cleaning up some unnecessary, childish, provocative comments. It takes time to maintain this place as it is. And this isn’t what any for us does full time.
I’m thinking about doing the first ticket contest tomorrow.

I don’t think a Smith trade would involve eating half the salary, ILB. Maybe a portion. A lot depends on who is coming back the other way.
In the world of defensemen his cap hit is actually pretty reasonable. Is he a four million dollar player? No.
But you’d be hard pressed to find a Dman that’s available at the deadline who is worth what he’s making.

Agreed. It is certainly possible that there is a partial retention but, half seems excessive to me.
Regarding shattenkirk, yes we all say he’s sucked and blah blah blah. Many of us said that before the rangers signed him and yet the rangers did and there were other teams out there willing to pay more longer, so while we experts here in the blog know everything about everything there is that remote possibility that he could be traded without salary retention or taking back a bad contract.
I’m not sure the organization would even trade him due to the reasons I have mentioned in the past (more off ice than on).
Point is, gorton can clear some significant cap space and improve the team if he does his job and moves guys with term left (yes, in some cases addition by subtraction).
Ball park $$$$
No Doritos 5 mil
Dozen eggs 5 mil
Milk carton 4 mil
Governor 4 mil
Smith 4 mil
Discount 6.5 mil
Sideshow Bob 5 mil
There is money to be made available for improvements and still get replacement players as well.
It can be done. Whether or not gorton does it is a different story.

Man that’s some bad spelling on my 1:18 post! I refuse to blame it on autocorrect Fire Sather!
