Good morning, boneheads!
The ledge is getting crowded after 5 games already. During a rebuild, no less. Didn’t think it was going to be any different, one of many reasons I love this place. 😀

Good morning ilb.
The whole reduilding thing kind of sucks. Especially when you are not playing the guys you are supposed to be rebuilding with.
Namestolong looking better and more engaged
Spooner disappearing
Hayes may be coming around
Refs at least helping us lose for Hughes
Tough loss when your goalie plays a great game and the best player in the league scores late in the third period. That part can happen to anyone. But the lack of offense has been very apparent through the start of the season. Rebuild rule number 1: you need a finisher. A supporting cast and no one to consider a pure goal scorer will put them right back to where they were years ago. Again that’s IF this keeps up. Not going to get ahead of myself after 5 games.
They are really stuck on D. They will probably take Claesson out and put Pionk back in, but the rest of them are here to stay.
Up front there is one simple move. Letierri sent down, Andersson called up. I don’t mind Letierri, but he’s not offering them much more than a body at this point.
Does Panarin want to come to this mess? He’d fix a lot of what is wrong up front.
Agree on Andersson. Chytil, BDL? If it were up to me, I’d not send him down. Put him out there on many offensive draws, mix and match his partners. Let him gain a little more offensive confidence.
Not a given, BDL.
Ilb,
Quinn was talking about getting him more ice, possibly on the wing. I agree and disagree with this. Ice is earned, not given, but if he’s going to stay up, he needs to play. So the wing would make sense. I would move Zibanejad to the wing instead, but somebody has to move there.
I also believe they’re getting more used to defensive structure. They will start winning soon. Hard shot around the boards to break the trap was an adjustment that worked a few times. Until Edmonton figured it out. Not a long term solution, but a sign that Quinn will be able to adjust within games.
There is a lot to like about Quinn so far.
I don’t fully agree with putting him in the wing, especially if the long term plan on him to be a center. But at the moment he needs to gain offensive confidence, so whatever works.
I think if kravstov were in Hartford or if the rangers had a winger in the same veil of the 3 centers down there, I’d send chytil down and let that whole group play a full season down there together. But the rangers don’t have a guy like that in Hartford, and you want chytil playing with really fast talented line mates bc you want him developing that style of play.
ilb,
I’d rather not put Chytil on the wing either. My centers would be Hayes, Chytil, Howden, and Andersson. 3 who can play in there own end, and Chytil.
Kreider, Hayes, Zibanejad
Vesey, Chytil, Zucc
Spooner, Howden, Buchnevich
Namestnikov, Andersson, Fast
James – The said thing is there are few players who belong on that milk cartoon besides Spooner.
Howden wasn’t good yesterday. I chalk it up to a rookie playing in his 1st NHL matinee game and the difference in routine. He was standing around a lot and late to start skating. But I kinda get what happened. No legs
I like that lineup bdl
True, Anthony.
Could Panarin be a finisher here is the real question. We don’t need multiple years of another enigmatic forward that suddenly comes to NY and doesn’t know how to do anything except pass the puck
But I really like the way Namestnikov has played since coming back into the lineup and would switch him with spooner at this point.
What’s everyone’s view on the Mattheson, Petersson play last night. First time I watched it I thought, dirty. Watched a few times now, and I think it was a stronger player winning a battle. Can’t punish guys for being stronger than a 160lb 18 year old. It’s sucks that Pettersson was hurt.
I think it’s the appropriate time to swap milk carton boy and Names as well. the guys that are noticeable need to start moving up in this lineup. I still think it’s worth a look at Chytil between Names and Buch.
And I want to mention that Claesson deserves a spot in this lineup. Time to try on the big boy pants as a head coach and tell Staal to take a seat.
Names has earned a bump up. I’m serious in saying that I haven’t seen or noticed Spooner on the ice once this season.
I called it on Pickle Man. He’d get in the lineup and we wouldn’t want him to leave.
I’d say next game Staal and McQuaid should sit.
BDL- I have no problem with the initial contact. Once Petterson was against the boards and not in control of the puck is when it went south. He basically threw him down onto the ice. If you watch the play the intent is there and you can see it in the movement of his arms…
PS- just spoke to Wicky and he’s fine with the hit. 🙂
Pionk is coming in for Claessen. That will be the only change on D.
James,
Now we are going to punish guys for being 200lbs plus, because the guy he’s playing against is 160?
Claesson is Pionk caddy, and DeAngelo is Shattenkirk’s. The original plan was, if we had paid attention what Carp was saying, was for Claesson to be playing with Skjei on the top pair. When McQuaid happened, that changed, and Claesson went from top pair to 7th Dman.
Not what I was saying, BDL. There was no reason to throw the kid down onto the ice after he was already checked and off of the puck. If he was 200lbs would he have went down as hard? probably not. But that’s neither here nor there.
I don’t agree with it. But I don’t think there’s really a need for disciplinary action.
Names is playing with Don Cheadle to protect his lack of Dzone awareness; putting Spoon with Cheadle by moving Names up wouldn’t accomplish much.
.
Haze needs to get on the wing or even off this team; he is the square peg; too slow and won’t play North-South. Keep the pups in the middle until they prove they are not NHL pivots which may be hard to judge with these wingers.
.
Moving wings on and off Howden’s wing will not accelerate his development. The DQ line combinator is spinning non-stop.
you’re making assumptions, BDL. Quinn gets to make the decisions. How much longer can he watch Staal play with his limited capabilities and not take action? Rhetorical question.
re: Howden I think he’s simply taking a look at potential chemistry between a young player with some upside and some more talented wings. Nothing wrong with that. At some point he needs to let these guys gel a bit though.
re: Hayes I think you’re 100% right SN. He and Zibanejad shouldn’t be allowed to just go out there night after night with their mediocre play when there are young centers that could be playing more effectively in their supposed top 6 roles.
James,
It’s not just Staal, it’s Smith, it’s Shattenkirk. Staal will eventually be bought out. If they can increase the value of Smith, they will trade him. More likely he gets buried again. They are stuck with Shattenkirk.
Maybe they are assumptions James. But When DeAngelo played, shattenkirk was benched, and when Claesson played, Pionk was benched.
Dirty hit through and through. He’s already heading to the ice, no need to drive his head down for good measure. Stupid, dangerous play.
Once again PP2 has no righty shot and has been unable to generate quality scoring chances. Need to get Haze off and put Names to help carry in zone; Names can get more TOI.
.
Number of recorded ‘hits’ – no standard of application, more of a barometer of physical engagement.
5 games: Cheadle – 0; Butch – 1; Spoon – 2; VC – 3; Howden – 3
.
Players with Negative 5v5 Relative Corsi:
Wingers: Butch, Haze, Lettieri, VC, Spoon
D-men: Staal, McQuaid, Pionk
I just don’t think that implies it is carved in stone that when one guy sits a specific guy subs in. But who knows. The blue line is the most mediocre lineup I’ve seen since the Boris Mironov days.
First two games of the season, and KZB play together. The entire line stinks. They take Kreider off the line, and he score two goals. ZB still stink. Kreider plays with Howden, who plays his best game of the season. Z and B play with Fast, and still stink. Only now Fast also stinks. Z is moved from B, and then plays his best game of the season. B is put with Howden. Howden has a so so game. I just can’t quite put my finger on what may be causing some of these guys to struggle some nights, but thrive other nights.
BDL – careful; the fan boys think he’s great. Had the primary assist on Smith’s tying goal. A look at that play says it all. Smith comes down wall, ties up forward and pushes puck to Fast, who wins 50-50 wall battle and passes it to Butch who blindly passes it middle and Smith one times it top shelf. shelf.https://www.nhl.com/rangers/video/smiths-game-tying-goal-in-3rd/t-277443728/c-61784603
5 games in let’s send Hayes to minors…. let’s ruin any trade value he has….he will Be fine
Wow SN that’s an impressive effort to discredit ANYTHING Buchnevich does. At least he’s been relevant thus far and produced some offense. How many guys can say that so far?
What a load of crap new post, now I’m going to have to binge repost everything…ugh
Zucc zero goals
Namestnikov- zero goals
Spooner zero goals
Hayes zero goals
Zibanejad 1 goal
Lettieri zero goals
Chytil zero goals
Clearly the biggest issue is Buchnevich
signed,
a fan boy
i wonder how many of us will survive this rebuild
Chytil, zero goals is an issue because he is a big part of the future, and you want to see him have success. Zibanejad,1 goal is an issue because he is signed for 4 more seasons after this one, and is the so called number one center. The rest are gone by the time they are ready to be good. So not that big an issue.
question?
who’s in best shape of these teams and who’s in worst shape of these teams going forward
g men
mets
rangers
Some reposts from late last night that are sort of relevant to the convo this morning….
This team needs a guy that score from right around the blue paint like Arvidsson or Hornqvist or Gallagher badly
McQuaid has been nothing short of solid so far this season, but he clearly was looking for the puck the wrong way and completely lost RNH on that first goal…bad play.
The biggest concern to this point (if you could be concerned after 5 games) is the scoring…or lack there of.
It usually takes most nhl teams about 15-20 games (depending on amount of offseason changes) to get their teams defencively “situated”.
It’s why I don’t put a lot of “stock” in the team you see early in the season actually being what the team will be for most of the season. Scoring is usually higher at the start of the nhl seasons as offences take advantage of this.
The lack of scoring by the rangers is concerning
Buchnevich is an issue because the same exact problems he had under AV, are the same problems he is having now. Lack of a consistent compete level, losing board battles, and playing only one third of the ice.
BDL
it is an issue regarding Hayes and Zucc since we want to maximize the return when we trade them at the deadline.
Alex,
The Rangers. They have acknowledged, and begone the process of rebuilding. The other two are delusional.
I wonder if the rangers will ever to decide to rebuild? Seems like that window is closing for that with the upcoming free agents that are potentially available.
Looks like the status quo setup will continue based on the current roster and they will continue a retool.
Alex,
Track record.
BDL
but other roles they are undertaking (like the pk) will increase their value (hopefully) especially for Hayes.
Wicky,
They are walking a very fine line between rebuilding and treading water. You shouldn’t rush guys here that are not ready, but once they are here, they need to play. If they are developing players, then develop them. Send them down to play together. Build a winning attitude in the AHL. Having guys here to just be here hurts them.
Lmao….talking about trading 2 guys on the last year of their contact (that you don’t plan on bringing back) like it’s some earth shattering move that no team has ever done before?!
Duh, good asset management regardless of where you are in the standings…should have traded yandle (bad asset management).
5v5 – Even Strength Points
Butch – 2
Zucc – 2
Zika – 2
Spoon – 1
Haze – 1
.
Point is nobody is doing much of anything but some have more TOI with better players and zone starts…
I’m probably the oldest bonehead I can survive anything! James you’re reading my mind. Staal is just a body taking up space, playing him just because of his contract and the warrior he has been is no excuse!
Survive anything in reference to the rebuild!
Wicky
I think most of us agree that the ufas should be traded at the deadline (whether we call it part of the rebuild or asset management)
so our best bet is to maximize their value. in whatever roles they are used. So I hope Zucc, Hayes and McQuaid all do very well in their roles this season.
Bdl
Couldnt agree more with your 11:57.
That’s what I’ve been saying all along. Gorton’s Hedging his bets still. Trying to do both aka rebuild on the fly.
I don’t think it’s the best idea, and I would go full rebuild, but they haven’t.
I think they have issues doing a full rebuild and gorton knows it. The letter was a stroke of PR genius and allows gorton to tread water and see what happens next free agency.
Doesn’t mean they won’t make deals and move expiring contracts (gorton damn well better, salary cap era…you have to use smart asset management regardless of your organizational direction).
Nodt for nothing, but Quinn is a breath of fresh air after AV’s BS.
Andersson should be up here and getting healthy minutes.
Only saw bits an pieces of game as was taking advantage of visiting help to winterize/repair things outside. Saw that missed call on Hayes and mystery call on Namestoolong that led to the pp goal. Oy vey the refs seem to be getting worse in every sport, hockey included.
I’m not fond of juggling lines a lot as you need to develop some instinct for what your parterns will do, but think with last year and early this year, prefer KZF than KZB. Buch is a tease guys, let him go to euroland. Also prefer to keep Haze and Zuc apart as much as possible, again based on history and current year.
Wicky do you own a plow?
Honestly, as much as I’d like to see all the prospects play in the NHL right now, I think it makes more sense to send them all down. By all I mean Chytil, and Howden. Let them go develop in the AHL. Moving guys all around to accommodate the youngsters just messes things up.
Lucic is Quasimodo
Does the name Quasimodo ring a bell?
Oh and though I’ve not shown Namestoolong much love, glad to see him actually getting involved in the games and showing some passion out there. Small sample but really wasn’t expecting him to step up.
Names could be good if his attitude gets an oil change.
I wonder….if the Rangers took Wahlstom at #9 could they have still gotten Kratsov later in the first round. I think the answer is yes.
Staal, smith, and shattenkirk are “blocking” younger players of similar (or better) ability/style.
They are the problems on D.
SkjeL is an overrated 2nd pair guy that doesn’t play D well.
Claesson is a decent d man that I would have in my top 6 (on this current team) in the place of staal or smith.
Pionk is meh, he’s nondescript and seems like a 7th d player ideally.
Deangelo is a young shattenkirk but without the young shattenkirk’s ability to play even passable D (shattenkirk play passable D when he first came into the league).
McQuaid is the least problem on the D for 2 reasons…
1) He’s not blocking anyone because the righty D in the system is thin and there is no one like him.
2) you can either trade him or re-sign him for another season or two depending on the eventual organizational direction and he doesn’t hurt the cap or depth.
Rich,
The answer is no. Philly was taking him.
Beezle
I do. I also have a generator if you lose power, but carp borrowed it several winters ago and hasn’t returned it yet.

brooksies take on the youth
Send the yoots and bring up The Dutchman and Schneider so we can actually enjoy these game. Screw the rebuild the playoffs are in reach. I for one have grown accustomed to mediocrity over the years!
ugj, I just saw the Pettersson concussion. Brain jarring. It’s never the hit, it’s the whiplash or the way the head bounces and hits twice a lot of times. It’s the back and forth motion, the rattle, it’s not the impact.
Off-topic for Wicky: what brand and type? I’m putting one on a half-ton to handle my unpaved property. Heard the v-types do well in wet/heavy stuff but might be overkill/more to go wrong for me.
I always find it interesting when people post these “advanced stats” about d men.
I’m no fan of staal, but he has been pretty good to start the season. Guys like staal who are often paired with young guys or guys that are more offencive minded and quite often are less than stellar in their own end or coming back late from up the ice leaving staal is some pretty precarious d zone situations without reliable help from his partner.
Beezle
The V’s are great. But I’d go with what you are comfortable with, both technically/mechanically and budget.
If you are just planning to plow your driveway or property etc, you could probably get by with a less expensive one.
If you’re going to get some extra “hockey stick money” on the side, V is great!
Was Matheson penalized for the Pettersson throw down? It was the rare a case where a holding penalty becomes a major-game misconduct call. Fortunately his helmet was on tight or it could have been a Sauer like incident.
Bdl…..Philly was taking Kratsov? Oh well…..it still would have been nice to have them both. Sometimes being a Rangers fan is couched and cloaked in fantasy. I’m awake now…..THANKS A LOT.
Yesterday was good news and bad news. They played what may have been their best game of the year, but, still managed to lose to a team that may well compete with them in the Jack Hughes sweepstakes. Also looking at the Oilers may be looking at the Rangers’ future. They could suck for a decade.
DQ may be looking for minutes for Chytil to make a decision on whether to send him to Hartford or keep him here. They may also wait until Beleskey is healthy to decide. I suspect Andersson will be back before Thanksgiving either way. My Cousin Vinny could be headed the other way.
Going to see them play the Hawks in Chicago next week. Hawks don’t seem to be in the Hughes sweepstakes right now. Another chance to gauge how close they are to the bottom.
Re concussions
Again, hits etc affect guys differently. What might concuss one player will have zero affect on another.
Until the Nhl slows the game down (not necessarily the issue re petterson), starts penalizing players that put themselves in vulnerable positions, and stops protecting the perp on the ice…i don’t put to much into their seriousness about concussions.
Did Lettieri play yesterday? I mean if your stable #5 d man isn’t noticeable, well that’s not a problem.
If you 4th line “energy” player isn’t noticeable, that is a problem.
Perhaps they should send him back to the AHL where he belongs.
This team has shown very little in the way of physical, not so easy to play against, North south hockey.
Staal hasn’t been good. Crapinkirk has been bad but he isn’t going anywhere. Pionk was good last year and will be good again. Tony D has a much needed edge. McQuaalude hasn’t done much imo but he’s a man’s man. Smith can be better….Claesson doesn’t impress me.
Agree with wicky…rangers have not been physical but it’s to be expected with cream puffs like Buch, haze, Z, and spooner. And Lettieri brings about as much energy on the fourth line as a stale beer fart.
Sorry I don’t think you can actually penalize a player who puts himself in a vulnerable position. The ensuing injury (and perhaps repeated injuries leading to retirement a la Lindross) is the penalty itself. you could (and the NHL seems to) give a lesser infraction to the transgressors if the other player put himself in a bad spot. Do agree the game has gotten too fast and when you combine that with the players and their equipnebt being a lot bigger, it’s a recipe for repeated concussions. It’s not just concussions the league doesn’t take seriously though, look how many incidents it took for Wilson to get a real suspension and how guys like Marchand get little slaps on the wrist and guys like Crosby not punished at all for dirty plays that could end careers (or take off pieces of another player’s finger perhaps?!)
—/
ORF, the Oilers are a example of what happens when you have bad management using too many top picks on very similar players instead of recognizing there is a time to not make the pick and use that third or fourth #2 or 3 overall pick in a trade for a good young defenseman (instead of later trading the best of those non-Mcdavid picks for a decent but not great defenseman). Combine those errors with it being nearly impossible to attract free agents to edmn (see the Lucic drastic overpay) and you get the current oilers roster. Rangers will always be able to attract free agents because it’s New York and we’ll be lucky to get even one top 3 pick out of this “rebuild” process let alone the four or five the oilers got. But the Leafs model also show it takes time and you have to be patient, time will tell if we get lucky enough to get a really couple of really good top picks and then stay the course thereafter.
BDL didn’t see your response before- my point on Buch is why are you singling him out? Not saying he’s not making mistakes just that others are bad or worse. Why single him out? No one else is an issue because they have the same exact problems they had under AV? No one else has shown a Lack of a consistent compete level? Lost board battles? Have been playing only one third of the ice?
Does Carp and others think that second year on his deal is making Spooner a more attractive trade option at the moment?! It’s early still but that was an instant blunder of a deal after already having signed Names to a two year deal.
I think the placeholders currently in NY on the defense are Smith, McQuade and Claesson. I expect 2 of them to be gone at the deadline to be replaced by younger guys. Shattenkirk is not going anywhere, and Staal will probably be bought out after the season. Next uear’s Backline will probably look a lot different next year. Up front, hard to believe that Spooner and Namestnikov will remain after the deadline, and one of Z-bad or Hayes could be gone as well. The Rangers have a long way to go before they are contenders.
Thought spooner was real good last year. Averaged nearly a PPG. This year he hasn’t been as noticeable. Haze is a round peg on a square team. Not a fan of his dingle Dangle mr. bo jangles play.
I would like to see our Russian guys over here in Hartford or NYC. Them being there prolongs the misery. I know they are under contract….but contracts have been broken before…and the care of players in that league…or at least the track record we are all familiar with….does not inspire confidence. The sooner they are here the better for everyone.
The thing is Wick on that particular play speed had nothing to do with it. And Pettersson didn’t put himself in a vulnerable position. He got checked. Which was fine. Then he got thrown down onto the ice. Which wasn’t.
James
That’s what I said in the post.
Re speed
Equipment is to blame too.
In theory, someone tell me why shattenkirk isn’t going anywhere?
I’ve said repeatedly from a PR standpoint it would be harder to trade shattenkirk than from an on ice standpoint.
If the rangers would be willing to ignore the PR aspect, why not move him?
E3
Correct sir
Staal being our best defender speaks volumes Oy Veh!
Wicky – I’d trade crapinkirk yesterday if possible.
Not much point in singling anyone out for mediocrity on this team. The whole gang is mediocre. Except Hank.
My comment re: crapinkirk has nothing to do with PR but rather who’d want him at that salary? He’s a third pair, at best, and soft as a marshmallow. Does he even run a good PP?
Shatty’s contract makes him hard to move, even with hometown “discount”.
I don’t think his contract is an issue if they choose to move him.
Staal needs to go last year. Or the year before that.
Wick – What team would take on that salary given how poor his play is?
Walking the dog today. Observation. You don’t see many itchy balls anymore.
I don’t get why everyone is so down on Shatty. Guy hasn’t played games in 9 months. Timing etc bound to be off at the start of the season. He’s a puck moving defenseman, not Chara. He needs to play a bunch of games and get his confidence back. Mid-November we will see what we have in him which will be lots better than now, but he’ll never be Erik Karlsson…
Crapinkirk is really really really bad bad in his own end.
Papa said itchy balls
Trade Shatner-Kirk to the isles to improve the defensive coverage! Might as well trade a tire fire to the actual tire fires!
I doubt Uncle Fester wants any part of Crapinkirk.
E3
I think that shattenkirk is an offencive D man that is “marginal” in his own zone.
As we have seen every year, GMs are more than willing to take vet players based on past successes.
He was clearly going to get more on the market than what he took from the rangers (how much more is open for debate), but at an open market discounted rate of a salary, I don’t think his salary is an issue if you move him.
Also consider if the rangers took back an nhl roster forward (you don’t take a d man since the objective would be make a spot for a similar, younger righty version of shattenkirk) that offsets part of the shattenkirk cap hit if necessary to make a deal work (again, if it was even necessary).
I think karlsson sweepstakes losers would be interested in shattenkirk.
Offencive righty d that is under contract (not soon to be ufa, but also not an elite player).
I would be more than will to trade Shatty for a quality 4 line grinder, pivot or wing of similar age and a pick or prospect!
4th line geez!
St Pete,
Exactly. Get a physical bottom 6 guy with some skill. A Zack Smith type (just an example of a type of player, not him per se).
The forwards on this team are brutal
Shatty willing to give New Rochelle High School a home-town discount.
Papa we passed brutal about 2 games ago
But on a lighter note, nowhere to go but up!
From the Silver Lining Dept., the Rangers first five opponents are 14-8-2. So there’s that.
so norm i presume excluding the games against us they are 10-7-2
0-3 v Canes, Sabres and Oilers is not good. Not sure those 3 are PO teams, but Sharks and Preds are. Possibly Canes, we’ll see.
I’d like a Lucic type player circa 2010.
Push it in deep.
The reason they sign Names, VC and Spoon to 2 yr deals is there is nobody on the farm to come up and play wing if you figure Zucc and Haze goners so this REBUILD will take at least another 2 seasons. When the HC calls it a rebuild, it’s a rebuild.
.
In fact, they have 5 wingers signed for next season; 3 above with Kreider, Fast. Butch is an RFA. This ain’t changing anytime soon. And you all thought the D was the problem…
Losing is better than Avoiding Victory! So on with the show!
If you need warm bodies to play mediocrely on the 3rd line wing you can easily get many of those during free agency and for a lot cheaper than $4m/year on a two year deal. No need to try and make Gorton look good on this one
Kind of agree with Sittoo – coming back from a knee injury when legs are your primary asset is difficult. Though, having been through it myself, meniscus < acl. If he continues to disappoint the Federation with inferior play (and doesn't bring the green chick to games) then time to transport him off the star base to the Delta quadrant.
If I wasn’t so old I’d be young….
In other news:
Another dude wins a female sporting event.
Because – Tolerance!
He’s pretty
Pete – name the available players who are bottom 6 fodder you want playing with your young and emerging pivots?
I’ll wait…
Is this another Renee Richards (ne Raskin) thing?
Losing to Edmonton, Buffalo and Carolina is good news for the Hughes sweepstakes. Not for much else.
Wow. That cyclist that beat the women has thighs twice the size of the silver and bronze medalist
Feel bad if my daughter wants to be an athlete and she faces the clear competitive disadvantage.
When will we have a rangers team that could even think about participating in this level of competition??
Doesn’t matter to me SN. Should be 4th liners anyway. Don’t need Spooner on the 3rd line to set a good example for Chytil (who is on the 4th line at the moment!)
Move Hayes to wing and see if that gets him going.
Get a righty on the PP2
So it doesn’t matter what wingers are on your team? So they bring up the AHLers to play with these guys? They brought in the 2 Euros who couldn’t hack it.
There is a better argument for moving Haze to 4C and letting Cheadle play 3C between Names and Spoon or VC.
If you are advocating full tank, I am all for it because it’s happening one way or the other this season and maybe next. I guess you want to save Dolan some money in the process.
Fire these fockers man. This Rangers front office is being made to look bad, like asleep at the wheel and behind the curve here.
Didnt you hear, last night the Carolina ‘public relations campaign hurricanes’ announcer cracked the code on instilling character unto your team.
Make them drive pick up trucks. That’s how you know your team is tough. They drive pick up trucks and go into the boards after wins. Justin Williams that doesn’t impress me, you really want to impress m, take out grittie the first time you play philthy.
Are we talking early 90s Toyota’s or new 50k chromed out pickups. Bc I don’t think driving anything that cost over 5k shows much character. But that’s just my character scale. Must be different than the hurricane announcers
Rich guys in rich pickup trucks scream character. Yeah in raleighworld now
Good morning, boneheads!
Lol, pick up trucks=character! Who is this clown?
So wait, is that guy saying that since 90% of our team drives electric Vespa scooters, then they aren’t character guys?! Ridiculous! 😉
Hey Boneheads I live in the south pickup trucks do not = Character Book it!
You can never get a character guy to play in NY. Good luck parking that monster on Upper West Side.
A review of the Rangers today, and likely every day for the rest of the season:
I am not a character guy.
I am not a character guy, but my father is. Sometimes, I need to borrow his character, especially when I go to Ikea.
Do large SUVs count? If not, Wicky is a wus too. 😀
My brother in law and I grew up 2 miles from each other. He is a character guy, and a lot of the people he grew up with are character guys. None of my neighborhood are character guys.
Wait Pete are u saying waving the confederate flag off the back isn’t showing character?
I’d say it’s showing a lot of their character if you know what i mean
Quick character guy story. My son and I went to buy a grill earlier this spring. We bought one off the sales floor figuring we could fit it in our SUV. Well we couldn’t, but a guy with character was walking by, and volunteered to take our Grill in his character. We accepted. For the 5 minute ride home, as the character guy followed us I could not stop laughing. Thinking, how am I going to explain to my wife we bought a grill, but a character guy drove off with it. But he was a true character guy, and brought our Grill to our house. There are still really good people out there.
Wow to think: early 90s pickups are almost 30 years old.
Guys who use public transportation have real charter. I use public transportation every day.
Wait wait wait
Let me guess
Brind’amour drives a fire truck right
No no, he drives a military grade humvi
The owner is rolling a tank into the players parking lot and Jordan staal’s pickup is sunset orange
Let me take another stab. Some of these guys have Yeti decals on their back window
Real character guys never brush their teeth pickup trucks not withstanding….
The podium picture from the cycling race looked like something out of a Will Ferrell movie. Reminds me of Blades of Steel. Or maybe an East German Woman shot putter.
The best woMAN won. 🙂
Our guys take the team bus…with no engine…and THE Kreider pulling it!
Carolina added Ferland for character. A guy that over the past couple of years many here said sucked.
We need 2 Ferlands…not 2 fer de lances, those things are lethal.
Vesey and Hayes take the subway to practice. Took it in full equipment last year to go to Lasker for the outdoor practice. That shows character.
Bad news guys – according the TSN, when the Capitals go on a road trip, Tom Wilson gets lonely.

Buchnevich not skating on a line. After the fake-out from Friday’s practice, take this #NYR for what you will: Chytil-Hayes-Zuccarello, Kreider-Zibanejad-Fast, Vesey-Howden-Namestnikov, McLeod(Buchnevich second in rotation)-Spooner-Lettieri.
Butch Fan Boys will shiit the bed on this one. McCloed in for Butch – oh my!
Cheadle on wing is also interesting
No word on D pairs. DQ sounde dliek Poink was goign back in. Who sits if he does?
Venus Williams playing mixed doubles with her brother Serena…
Dennis Weaver in for Buchnevich.
E3 Jim Nabors!
You could see this coming from the moment the Rangers hired Quinn and laid out how they wanted to play. Buchnevich does not fit that mold. He does not compete consistently. Skating is average, and he has zero interest in playing in his own zone. Maybe scratching him will get him going, but it will be short lived. He will revert back. AV already learned this.
Bdl
Hayes, Zibanejad, chytil, spooner, and at times Kreider and zucc do not fit the “mold” of how Quinn wants to play.
Chytil gets moved to the wing, because we couldn’t possibly expect whichever one of Hayes or Zika that won’t be a Ranger in 4 months to do so.
Buch as potential scratch..twitter burning ..Quinn honeymoon will be over shortly
lol I love how people get a kick out of a 23 year old kid whose play has been up and down so far having to take a seat for a useless aging enforcer.
“That’ll show the butch fan boys!”
How bout being disappointed that a prospect is failing and a sack of uselessness is going to skate in his place? Make too much sense?
Consider me a Butch fan boy. I love the guy – and think he should be a massive part of the rebuild. He still needs a good amount of work on his game. And if scratching him will light a fire, so be it.
Only a masochist would follow Ranger Twitter or check out the comments section under a Rangers article on Facebook.

Amen, bro. Amen.
Win with Quinn, Lose for Hughes, Fall with Staal! Take your pick! So I’m not saying this is wrong but what kind of message does benching the Russian Buchnevich send to Kravtsov, Shesterkin, & Rykov? Prust saying!
Wicky,
Agree on all players you mentioned. The only difference in the 5 is that Kreider, and Zucc compete. And Chytil is still very young. I think there is plenty of time to mold him.
Pete
Those kids dont speak English. They won’t get the msg 😉
James,
I don’t get a kick out of it at all. I’d love for the guy to succeed. Sometimes players are what they are.
CCCP agents are fluent right?
This is what accountability looks like. Sorry if DQ wants to play his best roster.
When is Belesky coming back? Curious who sits when he returns as he will play on DQ’s team.
I would not have sat him for McCloed but I guess DQ wants to get Dennis Weaver some run.
Not sure Pete.
Eli – It’s not like Quinn is picking on the Russians or anything. If Kravtsov is spooked by a random Buch scratch…I’m gonna start wondering about Kravtsov.
Speaking of the Russians…Yegor Rykov. If they’re still screwing him over there, and we actually have plans for him, when does Gorton pick up the phone and say “Okay guys, what do you want?” Because that’s what this is really about, right?
I like Buchnevich. He’s the most skilled/talented forward on the rangers including chytil.
Thing is, I like Buchnevich for a reason besides that…he stands up for himself. He doesn’t win every wall battle (neither does fast, but most seem to love him).
Buchnevich reminds me of just about every other highly skilled offencive guy that doesn’t play a 200ft game or hit like Ovechkin.
If he isn’t scoring, he just isn’t that noticeable.
Personally, I’d put him on a line with two north south guys (rangers don’t have a lot of them) like howden and vesey or Lias and vesey…or even put him opposite of Beleskey when he is back with Lias or howden in the middle.
I’d say put him opposite of Kreider but Kreider seems a shell of the beast he was prior to price and AV.
And commenting about useless McLeod is, is missing the entire point. This is now the second coach who had decided that Buchnevich is not doing enough to stay in the lineup and get consistent ice. And it only took this coach 5 games to see it. Maybe they won’t actually scratch, or maybe they will for a game and that will turn his game around.
Kreder’s stats away from Butch are much better. The kid was good mitts, with time and space he has a special talent but doesn’t get to use it much because he doesn’t create that for himself or have others create if for him save for PP time.
hoping Buch turns it around ..just find some of over reaction comical
You’ll notice that I’ve updated my gravatar to reflect my, ahem, character!
BDL – THE competes some nights. That is really the problem with his game, the ‘Did you see Chris’ followed by ? or !
Bdl
I said “at times” they compete. Which I think is a fair assessment of both of them.
Chytil…well I don’t buy the “he’s young” thing when it comes to his competitive nature. You either have it or you don’t. He’s not all of a sudden going to become a beast along the walls etc.
We’ve all seen big guys that are soft as pudding along the wall (Hayes) and little guys that are beasts on the wall (verbeek, Dorsett, Avery). Chytil is a soft player, always will be. Anderson is a “hard” (yep, I said it) player, always will be.
It’s not about skill or size or age, it’s about competitive edge and mentality and you have it or you don’t.
Character is born of the will to succeed. For example, If I’m a foreigner and know I’m coming to the NFL, I take an ESL course so for starters, I know what the hell the coaches are saying.
I never said I disagree with Quinn benching Bushy Bushy. But if OTBG is going to draft Russians and Gorton is going to trade for them, wouldn’t you want to at least entice them to come over sooner rather than later. But hey I’m just a southern boy who used to drive a pickup truck!
Andersson should be here.
No see that’s the problem SN. With all due respect I’m not Not singling you out but too much mentality around here of “id rather be right than have something good happen for the team”. Call me and whoever else “fan boys” for supporting a young player during a rebuild if you want. It’s your right.
But just because I support someone doesn’t mean I think he’s flawless or great or any of that.
Some people act as if they find satisfaction in a problem like this. Then the lose and it’s “fire Quinn” “Hank sucks and is too old” and all that crap.
And this stuff about “so and so is what he is”. It’s ridiculous NO ONE knows after five games what a player will be. That’s how teams like Columbus lose guys like Karlsson for nothing and then go “whoops” when they finally come into their own
Verbeek, Dorsett, Avery!
I agree, reactions are extremely comical.
I also don’t get the McLeod stuff. He wasn’t re-signed to be in the minors, nor was he re-signed to play 82. He’s going to play some games and thus someone will sit.
It would make the most sense to sit at guy that is struggling a bit or that may have a bit of a nagging injury. The names will probably change throughout the season of who sits when he comes in.
Nobody doesn’t like Anders Lee. 🙂
Hayes may be incapable of effectiveness be it at C or W.
Quinn’s system doesn’t allow him to tip toe through the daisies and slow everything down as he’s done for his whole career. I can see him sitting for Lias if he can’t adapt at some point
Moving Chytil to the wing is a chicken s–t move. Move Hayes, or Zibanejad to the wing, or if you don’t think Chytil can play center in the NHL right now, send him down.
If Q dresses McLeod, there’s a reason for it. What that reason is might scare everyone.
Right Wicky. And when it’s a player that’s in people’s cross hairs that takes a seat they’ll rejoice like we just traded for Auston Matthews instead of having concern for the inability of a guy who HAS TO figure it out if the team is going to win.
Chytil will sit soon too. And it’ll be “well he’s 19. He is what he is.”
For all Chytil has (or hasn’t) done he’s still been less concerning than the “top two centers”. Maybe one of them should sit for a bit while Lias comes up and actually plays the way Quinn wants those two guys to play
Coos I don’t like Andres Lee. Not one bit.
I’m no sure who James is directing his rant at, but you can certainly tell a guys character and mentality by the time he is drafted…I.e. even before 5 games into an nhl season.
Skill can certainly improve, skating can improve, shooting percentage (hello mr karlsson once from Columbus), faceoffs can improve etc, but character and mentality(aka competitive nature) should be well established.
Wick said hard.
Kooz said coming
Coos if DQ is dressing McLeod I hope he picks out a nice suit and tie that will keep Cherry happy.

How many games, and how many coaches, James. Yes it’s a rebuild, but guys are not on scholarship. Quinn has to get his guys here, and get guys that are here to play the way he wants them to. No more looking the other way when a guy is non competitive. Buchnevich will either man up, or he gone. Same goes for the rest of them. Compete. Play hard every friggin shift.

You don’t have to convince me about hayes and zpack, they both need to be gone and I’ve said it for quite a while.
Bulldog said hard
Andersson’s doing nothing except prove he needs to be up here as soon as they can find room for him. 6 points in 5 games, 13PIM. JPP – how’s he doing as far as the eye test?

missing the entire point. This is now the second coach who had decided that Buchnevich is not doing enough to stay in the lineup and get consistent ice.
Bdl perhaps you’re the one missing the entire point. McLeod being in the line up for a team that can’t buy a goal isn’t what I would call a boost.
I guess the coach thinks Buchnevich sucks and a trade is imminent. 🤷🏻♂️
