Good Morning boneheads! So our boys win the final pre-season game and now the tough cuts begin. Thought it was a battle most the night, couple of Rangers who have been scarce showed their faces and finally got on the score sheet. I think these guys are buying into Quinn’s system but they’ll need time to drop some of the bad habits they developed over the last few seasons. Wasn’t fun to see them fall into their defensive shell that I doubt Quinn wants to see much of. Anyhow- Next game we watch will be a real one.

I would think by the end of the weekend they’ll have things finalized, Simon. I’m on the fence about a few players. I’m glad guys like Howden and Vinny L have made these decisions tough on Quinn. Would love to have Howden but he’ll get a ton of minutes in Hartford as we’ve all discussed.
From what i’ve seen Vinnie L has the best chance of cracking it, Howden, Lindgren, Hajek look to be headed for major minutes in HFord

For the record, we talk about how spots aren’t given but earned? well, I feel as though Smith and Staal are both being given spots. Or should I say they are their spots to lose. The blueline will be an injury away from DeAngelo getting regular time. Maybe even Hajek for that matter.

I can think of 3 guys I’d rather see on d that will end up in htfd than him.

Pionk and staal are most definitely 5,6,7 guys on most teams.
The other four (I’m going off my presumed starting 6) would be 2nd or 3rd pair on other teams imho.
None of the current top 6 (again, basing this on my “guessed” top 6) have pair potential.

I like Staal more than most here, but I agree he needs to move out of the way. But what do you do with him? Scratch him? I guess maybe that could get him to waive his no trade, but then wouldn’t you need to play him till the deadline? Smith? I don’t know.

Andersson and Howden are similar players, with Howden being the better skater. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to send them both down for big minutes, and have Fogarty center the 4th line. Andersson will be back quick. Moves still need to be made.
Howden over Anderson…did not see that coming at all …does this mean Chytil playing center?
Howden getting cup of coffee to keep his head up; more I see his game, more see him as more of a top 6 pivot, then a bottom 6 grinder. Better skater and not as much as a physical player than advertised. Looked like a boy amongst men at times but time will tell.
Very happy Holland is taking the tunnel out of town but thought John Fogarty would be 4C

With skating being an issue for Andersson (yes it is an issue), would it make sense to move him to the wing?
Agree on Howden, SN. I was expecting a grinder with skill – he seems like more of a skill guy with a bit of grit. When they all develop, I can see him above Andersson on the 2nd line (albeit 2nd and 3rd lines at that point will hopefully be very close in skill).

Heetle has a winger’s mindset; with that speed, would love to see him on the fly instead of fishing out pucks in the Dzone. He also has great puck sense and intuition; just wonder if his game may a little ‘loose’. See growing pains but lots of upside with his skating and handle; just very very young at this juncture.
Chytil to wing seems to make more sense to me but that’s just me. I rarely get it right..
If Derek Stepan’s skating ability can make a career of it here then there’s no reason Lias’ can’t
starting to smell like actual hockey around here.

I’ve said all along howden is a top 6 guy despite what others have said.
It would not shock me at all to see Anderson and howden switch spots at some time early on. I didn’t see a drastic difference in the two during the preseason and thought they both should start the season with the rangers.
I’d put Anderson on wing over chytil due to his wall work and forechecking ability.
Which is also why I’m not thrilled with zucc and fast still being here blocking young guys.
Rather not see Fogarty at 4c, but he’s better than boo.

I think if Beleskey hadn’t injured himself then McLeod wouldn’t have made the team. And if Beleskey comes back strong, McLeod will find himself a healthy scratch most nights.

jeez, I wasn’t knocking McLeod just saying he isn’t playing every night. And I agree 100% with Doodie. He’s essentially keeping Beleskey’s spot warm for the next month. I believe he takes that spot over Vinny’s. having no skill along side Howden or Chytil is a waste of a young center.
Sometimes you guys are too worried about the one individual player that’s front and center in your minds/cross hairs. Do you think one of the young centers should be here instead of Hartford so he can center Beleskey and Mcleod every night? Cmon.

Agree. Zucc moves to that second line RW spot and that’s probably your opening night roster with Hank in net. “grittier” games will see McLeod in for Lettieri. Names and Vesey could get swapped.
if you think about it, SN- they’ve basically taken out Nash, Grabner, Miller and inserted Spooner, Namestnikov and Chytil. I agree they’re soft as a dairy queen swirl cone in August, but they weren’t much different in years past
Also think that if/when Smith or Staal slump or get hurt for any extended period of time we’ll see Hajek called up as opposed to Claesson or Tony D playing every night
I actually REALLY like that lineup. Fire power and good defensive players on each line.
I could see Heedle and Spooner really teaming up for some assists and goals to each other. Fast is there for a defensive presence for the young center too. Could be the most productive line after a few months.
The practice d pairs are exactly what I called before and the most logical pairs.
That last pair is for now until they move Beverly and pickles is 7th.

ultimately whether this is the lineup or if it changes before or after opening night doesn’t matter half as much as how they play. They are holding onto bad habits from previous season’s that Quinn and co. are actively trying to correct.

Clearly the AHL time helped Anderson last year so maybe a little more development time to really work on things and he will be up here before long.

I would argue he still is an NHL ready prospect. He could certainly center the 4th line right now, and I would also argue he could center the third line as well. Problem currently is the organization does not want him to be a 4th line center, and they still have Hayes, and Zibanejad as the top 2.

So this is two years in a row that two different coaches have picked Chytil over Lias. Maybe he is St. Manny Part Deux. Also Al Montoya on waivers in Edmonton reminds me that I didn’t like them using a high draft pick on a goalie this year. If you draft a position player in that spot and he is not as good as you thought he can still be a bottom six or third pair player. If it happens with a goalie you get Al Montoya. Draft a goalie every year, but, in the late rounds where it is a crap soot anyway.

And look. Hank wants to play till he’s 40. He needs to start splitting games. Use this season to train himself on the new norm.
