Good morning, boneheads!
After a little post-SC hiatus, this week gets busy.
The 2018 NHL Draft in Dallas starts this Friday, June 22. Round 1 at 7:30 pm ET ( TV-NBCSN ), round 2-7 continues on Saturday, June 23 at 11 am ( TV- NHLN )
I also suspect we will start seeing some ordinary course buyouts this week, the deadline is June 30th.
I’ll watch for Carp’s article(s) in The Athletic so I can link it here.
Also, AnthonyM will give us the links to his write ups about the incoming draft.
Click here to read Carp’s article about Neal Pionk.

Well be left shaking our heads Friday night book it.
Eric…. I love your optimism LOL. But seriously, you’re probably right.
LMAO…. Alex Jones, er…. Ecklund:
On John Carlson….
The Rangers are starting to sound confident about their chances to sign John Carlson…Previously, the belief was the Rangers would go all in on Erik Karlsson…now that doesn’t look certain at all…Karlsson and the Sens are looking more and more possible after the Hoffman deal…
Zborovskiy was a guy that, when drafted, anybody who follows prospects immediately knew was a HUGE reach in the 3rd. The guy was barely draftable. But Gord and Co thought they knew something we didn’t. Lo and behold…they did not.
What a bust the 2015 draft was for us. We really suck at those deep drafts don’t we?
So this weekend we begin to find out if the blueprint is Boston or Buffalo. Here’s hoping they go Chowda not wings.
So Zborovskiy play with the Pack last year. It was clear he just couldn’t keep up. He was McI without the snarl.
In the last 72 hours the rangers have been “linked” to John Carlson, Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, Draisaitl, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall picks, John Tavares and Dougie Hamilton.
Let me just go on record and say that if Gorton can bring all those guys in by July 1 he’s pretty amazing
Ha prepared to be disappointed James! We aren’t getting any of those assets!
James, also don’t forget some trailers as Lusic and Bobby Ryan…not to mention half a dozen of different picks combinations from #3 to #28.
And two hard boiled eggs (*honnnk*) make that three hard boiled eggs…
Is Barry Trotz a Ranger yet?
I think it’s more likely the sens deal karlsson now.
Maybe the sens will deal Karlsson for the rights of Carlson…..
Or sign and trade Carlson to Vegas for Karlsson
Too late to throw money at Quinn and jettison him for Trotz?
🙂
I think they measureethese guys with their skates on.
I haven’t watched much hockey the last 2-3 seasons, so i can’t see what Kind of player Carlson actually is right now. But I remember the rangers loved that kid coming out of the draft and college. I see the points, i see the talk. I liked him as a younger player, even as a cap. Is he an 8mil guy like it sounds like he can get? Would he do 6yrs at 7.5. If you think the guy can be a #2 1st pair RHD, for the duration of the deal, he’s worth the cap space.
Carlson>Hamilton
Carlson and Trouba pretty similar players no? Everyone wants to trade for Trouba. Why not just sign Carlson and use the assets on C/Ws
JPP,
Trouba is younger and more physical.
He’s also a bit more raw/not as polished as Carlson.
I’d prefer Trouba bc his ceiling’s as high as Carlson and he has less miles on the tires….
Looks like Hoffman just went into Witness Protection…
Witness Protection hands out tees that say WPP on the front and ‘You Don’t Know Me” on the back.
Not our boy anymore, but can’t help but wonder if McDonuts will be his old self after a long summer off or if he is forever burdened by lingering injury.
Maybe we can send Staal down to the graveyard for slightly broken NYR defencemen or have they reached the limit of beds in the infirmary?
I don’t think TBL will extend Mack, even if they rid themselves of Captain Tax-Free mk 1 their cap is tight and have guys like Miller, Koekkoek, Paqette (this year), Point, Sergachev, Kucherov, Vasilevskiy (next year) all in need of RFA deals and only $10m or so in cap space to do this year. They’ll get $11.2m back from Stralman, Girardi and Coburn next year but then only have half a defense.
Maybe we offer them their first rounder back for Miller? 😉
Trouba is a 24 year old RHD for a team that just went to the WCF. They aren’t exactly going to let him go for “whichever rangers fans dont like and want to move plus a second rounder”…
Surprised no one has linked Panarin to the Rangers yet….
Good morning, boneheads!
I’d be all over Panarin if he is available.
Good morning Boneheads count me in on Panarin ilb! And by the way let the dealing begin get crackin’ Jeffy!
And before anyone starts talking about how expensive it could be to get him ( players, picks etc. ), the answer is: he is a R handed 1st line scoring winger who plays off wing. The Rangers are loaded with them.
Re Panarin if this is a true rebuild and I am not sure that it is….why not just wait until he is a free agent and load up on young talent
Good point ilb please no more RHD 1st line scoring wings enough is enough!
Panarin doesn’t want to play Torts hockey…Europansy? I kid, in seriousness, Columbus is now in a situation where they know they may lose him for nothing at some point. Perhaps he can be had in a reasonable hockey trade.
The Florida Panthers avoided some ugly options at wing via free agency by trading for Hoffman. Pretty deadly 1-2 punch with Huberdeau-Trocheck/ Hoffman-Barkov at C/LW…
BobbyO- it all depends on what the asking price is for any of these guys. A guy like Panarin isn’t available that often. And if he is you usually have to pay a premium..
Now that AV is gone, Panarin would have a shot at replacing Jesper Fast as our elite RH top line sniper.
Aside from Scheifele, Trocheck and Barkov are my two favorite centers in the league. That team is going to score a lot of goals this year.
I’d be all in on the bread man
JamesG..Panarin is world class talent…no way the price is going to be reasonable
But you pay it
Yup, you pay it. Panarin would fill so many of the teams biggest needs. It’s pretty much a pay whatever it takes situation.
And by pay, I really only mean a massive contract. Take a chance and let the guy get to free agency and offer him the moon. While, I would still love it if we traded for him, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to do that right now.
I think you pay the price if you think you are ready to win. Paying the price now makes you a bad team today, and tomorrow.
at a minimum wait until trade deadline to check price and see what what kind of team they have
do you trade Kreider, Skjei and the first number 1 for the bread man?
So Calgary has zero picks in the first two rounds…hmmm trade partner?
I wouldn’t pay “whatever it takes” to get Panarin. He’s a very good player…consistent point producer…. but, the most he’s ever netted in a season is 31 goals (last 3 seasons: Goals: 30, 31, 27/Points: 77, 74, 82). I’d make a “reasonable” hockey trade, or wait until he hits the open market. I’m not trading all of my picks/assets for him. It’s just ONE player, and one player a team does not make. If that’s the case, you can also pay “whatever it takes” to bring in Erik Karlsson. I wouldn’t do it for ANY player when we’re in the midst of a rebuild. Does Rick Nash in his prime on CBJ ring a bell? What good did all of his goals do them when they missed the playoffs year after year? WE traded for Nash bc we were only a piece or two away….. Just something to think about.
Hell no, Alex… that’s way too much I’m sorry. You’re trading away a power forward, a potential 1D and a 1st rounder. Nope. Not a chance.
Craig
I don’t either but I suspect some would in the spirit of “whatever it takes”
RETOOLED RANGERS if you believe the internet:
Zadina-Draisaitl-Panarin
Kreider-Hayes-Buch
Chytil-Andersson-Vesey
Beleskey-Spooner-Roussel
Trouba-Hamilton
Lindgren-Pionk
Hajek-Rykov
what? It’s practical….

The NHL is aware of Austin Watson domestic assault arrest. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly told me via email it will be “dealt with in due course and prior to next season.” “Our focus currently is on the wellbeing and safety of Austin’s wife, their child, and Austin himself.”
James G
That’s quite a line-up how did we get there?
James,
You traded , Hayes, Zuccarello ( yippee), Skjei, Shatennkirk, Zibanejad, and Staal. Well done!
At least they let Watson blow-dry his hair before the mug shot.
Namestoolong too, BDL ; )
And unfortunately we’ll never get our hands on Trouba. Ever. That window of opportunity started shutting last season after he came back from injury, and closed forever in the playoffs.
Nope… he didn’t trade Hayes. Man did you get great value on those trades, James… bahahahahahaha
Gorton and Slats on the shuffleboard court “What are you up to this week Glenn? Not much Jeff and you?”
No St Pete, Stogiepuss and Buddy Revelle are in Banff!
They should have a Barkov between Shepard and Beagle.
(whoever gets this first wins the Ruff Kennel Club Sweepstakes)
Carp claims Gorton is leaving no stone unturned in looking for talent. Hopefully he finds something better than slugs.
And Dougie Hamilton on defense, coos
Boneheads, after watching Gorton’s picks, will leave no turn unstoned.
Doggie Hamilton
SkjeL is a potential 1D like James is
And I would not do that trade mainly due to kreider.
Depending on who went where in the first few picks of the draft, I might include the 9 pick in a deal but it would obviously have to be during the draft
So – even if we don’t go scorched earth, we should have a solid chunk of cap space this season to grab a bad (or at least undesirable) contract from a team looking for relief. Since we’d like to compete in the next 2-3 season, said contract should not go longer than that. Some names:
Winnipeg:
Dmitri Kulikov (D) – 2 years – $4.33M
Calgary:
Troy Brouwer (RW) – 2 years – $4.5M
Michal Frolik (RW) – 2 years – $4.3M
Boston:
David Backes (C) – 3 years – $6M
Tampa:
Ryan Callahan (RW) – 2 years – $5.8M
Columbus:
Brandon Dubinsky (C/LW) – 3 years – $5.85M
Philly:
Andrew McDonald (D) – 2 years – $5M
Jori Lehtera (C) – 1 year – $4.7M
Pitt:
Carl Hagelin (LW) – 1 year – $4m
Chicago –
Marian Hossa – 3 years – $5.275M
SJ –
Paul Martin – 1 year – $4.85M
LA –
Dion Phaneuf – 3 years – $5.25M
Maybe some 6’7 250 lb speedy and mean defenseman from the Fairfield College Hockey Club will wander into Drury’s looking for a slice of Sicilian.
Danny Carcillo, 1 year – 675 thou
Phaneuf would be sloppy seconds
Heh coos.
Phaneuf/Dubinsky/Backes would be the absolute high end of the kind of crap contract I would be willing to take on, for assets. Probably more of a headache than it’s worth TBH.
But if Philly was interested in ponying up pick #14 for pick #26, on the condition that we take Andrew McDonald off their hands…ABSOLUTELY.
I wouldn’t take on a bad contract longer than 2 years.
Girardi’s hit goes down after 2 years and by then we can buy out Staal.
I think the next 2 years are considered rebuilding years. After that I want as little as possible in terms of bad deals affecting our ability to have a good team.
Does anyone offer sheet stone in Ottawa?
Can’t take on anyone we’d have to protect in the next expansion draft or that we can’t bury in the minors, which basically means no 3 year deals or ones with NMC. Also unless we truly have no younger players to plug in, any such guy should be Hartford bound or a healthy scratch.
That’s why MacDonald from Philly would be perfect. He’s already been stashed in the minors before, he doesn’t have any sort of NMC or NTC, he only has two years left @ $5M per. Philly is going to need to free up some money soon to sign Provorov and Konecny to some pricey deals, resign Mrazek, and they might want to extend Simmonds (plus go shopping). Lets help them out 🙂
No one offer sheets anyone, but only makes sense to go after a cap strapped team and even then you will be matched unless it’s unreasonsbly high, which will cost you multiple 1sts. So unlikely doable or worth it
It’s going to be insane when Ottawa keeps #4 this year, winds up trading everybody, and Colorado gets #1 overall next draft. That’s pretty much the only logical way this narrative can end.
Rangers open at home oct 4 vs predators. 0-1 season over.
I love Trouba. Been president of fan club.
Eric I’ll be leaving for Aruba that morning. Email me and let me know who wins 🙂
Well said on 1D Skjelator, Wick.
With Mike Hoffman’s trade to the Panthers, Monika Caryk finally has the opportunity to fulfil her destiny as a future “Florida Woman.”
i thought we’d be the opponent
