Good morning, boneheads!
I thought I’d give ourselves a new thread.
A few interesting tidbits around the net.
First one is from Forbes. The Business of Hockey list ranks each team’s value as of December 2017. Please note that only three top teams ( NY, Toronto and Montreal ) are really making money in this business.
The second article is from The Athletic. It’s written by Shayna Goldman, who seems to be their stat person in general. I find her articles interesting if not a bit too heavy on numbers. This one is not that heavy, and it breaks down common narratives about six key Rangers players.
Lastly, here is an article from NY Post about Brian Leetch and David Quinn connection.
I’ll update this post if Carp comes up with anything later today.

That stood for Thank God I’m First
Between Quinn and Leetch I feel good about at least one or two players figuring out how to play defense before the 5 year contract is up!
Good morning Boneheads welcome to Friday! My wife has a week off from work so I haven’t been around much and I will probably have to watch the replay of the game. As the draft approaches I’m preparing myself for the rubber room just in case the Rangers go of the board lol!
Who is dumber, JR or JR?
I think JR is dumber than both of them, Rob
I don’t suppose Leetch would ever want to get involved as an assistant coach. Shame too, he’s a great hockey mind. Getting curious about Ruff and his status too.
Happy 5th Monday (short week, so happy 4th Monday)!
sure Leetch and St Louis would be interesting but thinking they may want someone with NHL experience on the bench with coach coming in from college ranks (even if he was assistant with Avs) .
Interesting interview with tkachuk on the athletic
Just like with Memorial day…Monday is nothing to be happy about.
BobbyO, I get the feeling that either Ruff will be back as an assistant or you’ll see a veteran guy like Capuano(hope not) or Joe Sacco beside Blizzard treats..
Is it go time yet?
Articles like that infuriate me.
Why is it with this wave of new fans that, if you like Buchnevich, Vesey then sucks. If you are a Shatennkirkian, you hate McD and call him overrated. You cannot possibly watch a Ranger game and think that Buchnevich is fully engaged. He’s young, he probably thinks he is, but he clearly isn’t. If he figures that out, look out. Till then he’s going to get 45 pts and leave you looking for more.
As far as Z being a good number one center goes, he’s wasnt the number one center, Hayes was. Hayes was the guy who had the matchup duty, not Z. Why? Because Z could not handle it.
I’ve got that Angry James feeling this morning.
agree JamesG….thinking Ruff definitely in mix
Z pack should be traded by the draft, end of story!
Who the hell thought or said that Vesey was an “offensive game changer” —he was a good signing as free agent that was supposed to bring some depth and possibly become top 6 winger. BDL makes good points..some authors/bloggers cannot write anything about Vesey or Buch without mentioning and usually denigrating the other …. they have potential and bring different skill sets but need to step it up a notch next year
I’ve got that Angry James feeling this morning.
BDL, what do you mean morning? It’s 1127am. At your age isn’t it almost dinner time? : D
AND WHERE IN THE HELL IS DOODIE?
BTW Hayes will be the number one guy this season as well.
Brooks was voted into the hockey hall of fame. Next year Carp!
Since Brooks plagiarizes this board, that makes us all hall of famers in a way.
Hayes will be smokin the opposition!
https://nypost.com/2018/06/01/the-posts-larry-brooks-voted-into-hockey-hall-of-fame/
will torts be there
We need Mr. Monk to figure out who on this blog is brooks?
What was that James? Sorry I missed it,I was napping.
Assuming no other top forward additions, it would be interesting to see Hayes center Kreider and Mika, as think Mika’s offensive game really translates better as a winger
The fact that Blizzard Treats is now the head coach of this team tells me two things- 1 ) Gorton was not blind to the lack of progression from guys like Buchnevich and Vesey. Nor was he blind to the limits set for them and how they reacted to the ex-coach. and 2) Gorton thinks that there is untapped potential there with those guys and probably others as well.. Now maybe one or two of them get moved between now and next year but the point is that the GM has brought this guy in to develop these guys that many here (and elsewhere) have raised issues with…
I hear Torts is gonna introduce Larry at the dinner.
“ladies and gentlemen. direct from the bus stop…I give you..”@#&@#(*(@*#….*#$*&#&$*#&$ and his *%(*#(*$#$() hall of *(#*$(#*$($…more like the (*(#*$#($* hall of (#$*#$(*(#$* #$*($*.”
Pete, IMHO Zibanejad isn’t going to play the wing. He’s got the best FO% on the team and was signed to a big contract to play C. If they don’t feel he can do that then there’s the door.
Congrats to Larry Brooks! Nice article in the Post, but did they really have to take a stab at Torts?
James
Doodie hangs with the “cool” twitter crowd, he won’t spend time with us bonehead types.
Ilb
People are so petty, obviously
Why do I not believe that all those teams are losing money? At the very least they have valuable tax write-offs.
As a GM, it’s always nice to have a Ruff type around ready to take over immediately if the head coach falters. Of course, Gorton would never say or infer such a thing to Quinny.
Wow! I’ve been out with my wife all week I forgot game 3 is Sat.
Ruff might be Ruff on blizzards!
Safe space, where nobody challenges CORSI, and any other kind of analytics.
I got irrationally upset after watching this. 😉
Tom Petty was a heartbreaker.
I hate old looking hockey players
Finally getting around to post an interesting (to me anyway) Historical Analysis ISS did looking at the drafts from 2008-2017. It is skewed a bit because they include Vegas and they haven’t had any of their picks play in the NHL yet.
According to ISS, 37.9% of draft picks (2008-2017, all seven rounds) appeared in at least one game for any NHL team. The Rangers stand at 33.9% (21 of 62). Those 62 draft picks are not the lowest – Washington (61) and Pittsburgh (58) had less. Chicago had the most players drafted at 86.
While trailing the NHL average, the Rangers percentage was still better than: Detroit (33.8), Chicago (33.7), Philly (32.9), Vancouver (32.3), Montreal (29.7), St. Louis (28.8), and San Jose (26.9). Technically, Vegas is the worst because no draftee has played in the NHL – yet.
The NHL average for players appearing in 100+ games (for any team) is 17.5% while the Rangers come in at 14.5% (better than 9 teams, Vegas excluded).
The NHL average for players appearing in 250+ games is 8.8% and the Rangers are at 9.7% – good for 12th in the NHL.
Anaheim and Ottawa are the top two teams in all three of these categories. The Isles are .1% behind Ottawa when it comes to players at 250+ games.
Easy to see why the Habs have struggled. They are last in 100+ and 250+ games and are near the bottom in having draft picks play at all in the NHL.
Crazy stat – the Penguins have had only one of 58 draft picks play 250+ NHL games.
Interesting analysis. So they had a lower than average% and almost the lowest# of picks. No wonder the cupboard is bare. They have managed to be much better than an average team over that period. It may be that they got lucky with 7th rounder a few years ago.
Adam Graves “Beginnings” is on MSG right now.
5 minutes in and Adam mentioned Maple Leaves couple dozen times already:)
Ah currently sitting at Paciugos with my wife feasting on gelato delicious!
Anthony
Great info. Thanks!
Hmm, maybe Clarke…I mean sather is as bad as everyone says
Ugh…isn’t as bad as many here think
Wicky – That is what you get for trying to say something nice about Slats 🙂
This just in: New Hockey Hall of Famer Beaten Up at Bus Stop.
Happy anniversary Olga, Slatsko, Mother, etc

18 years of futility. How do I get a job like that?
https://www.tsn.ca/dreger-report-kovalchuk-says-winning-the-priority-in-nhl-return-1.1100940
kovy – winning is main priority. talking to a lot of teams.
Why is there no hockey tonight? Did the Craps need another day to come up with a pregame to compete with Vegas?
Cruel, Alex. Cruel.
Beezle
to avoid the nba playoffs. yes there’s no game tonight in nba but they play sunday which would preclude sunday for hockey anyway. they’d rather take an extra day off between cities then when they’re in a city already.
TYM
Give J. Dolan a ring?
Eli- I’ve mentioned it before. ILB is Brooks. What do you think ILB stands for?
I- I
L- Larry
B- Brooks
I think it’s quite clear. You don’t believe any of that doctor nonsense, do you? : D
Just wanted to say thanks for the lead stories from a long time lurker.
Tell Angry Dan Boyle he can eat my shorts.
Dan Boyle broke the blog.
Morning boneheads.
Ovie or Vegas wins the cup huh. Crazy.
Let’s do a little 6 degrees of Kevin bacon here
Gorton
Drury
Greeley
Quinn
Shattenkirk
Keller
Mcavoy
Tzchuk
Gorton and Drury has been all over the BU pipeline. Hired Greeley a couple years ago. Hire Quinn today. Wanted Keller, wanted mcavoy. This league is forcefeeding kids in for economic purposes. Bringing in these developmental coaches is all about getting these young kids into the show and making them better. Teams getting out in front of this evolution will have an advantage a couple years from now
I am of the thinking the rangers should make as many moves and bring in as many players as they can this summer and let everyone come in together. That means trading guys who still have really high value, that means paying extra to get the top end guys that might be available. I hear a lot of talk that the rangers can wait on Kreider and Mika and Skjei. I wouldn’t. I’d decide right now which guys i believe need to be here and which guys are better serving as means of playing in higher end talent. Got no interest in holding off so the talent comes in staggered. Focus on that next year and beyond. Bring in as much as you can this summer.
EddieJ
Logical conclusion but I believe ilb a bit too sharp to be Brooksie!
Youse guys might think the Rangers are in a fog these days, but 40 years the Blueshirts were really in a “fog” as they hired Freddy “The Fog’ Shero to be the team’s GM/Coach. In order to avoid tampering charges, the Rangers sent the Flyers a 1978 1st round pick (Philly drafted Ken Linseman). As we all know, the Rangers would later trade a 1st round pick to Quebec when they hired “Le Petit Tigre” Michel Bergeron. While Quebec used the 5th overall pick to draft future Rangers scout Daniel Dore, they (and the Rangers because of the deal) passed on the likes of Rod Brind’Amour, Jeremy Roenick and some guy named Teemu Selanne.
My favorite “Freddy the Fog” story was his acquisition of Cam Connor, thinking he was getting Colin Campbell!
Given the Rangers penchant for naming former players as coaches (For example Emile Francis named Bernie Geoffrion, Larry Popein and Ron Stewart during the Cat’s tenure as GM), it would have been interesting to see how history would have turned out had Francis hired Shero before the Flyers.
The following SI article details Shero’s early exploits with the Rangers and says that the Blueshirts job was the one Shero wanted. I did see a mention in Shero’s Wikipedia page that there were concerns about Shero’s ability to communicate with players and a perception that Shero had a problem with alcohol. The link to that article is broken.

jPP,
I think I agree with what you are saying. Do it all at once, and have them all start fresh together. But that is if they are doing a true rebuild. It remains to be seen if that is the case. I think it’s safe to say that Kreider and Skjei would bring back very good value in trades. I’m not convinced Zibanijad would bring great value.
If you think about it, the Summer of 1978 was the first volley fired in terms of the Rangers eventual free-spending ways.
It was the time that saw Sonny Werblin brought in to run MSG. Looking to make a big splash (as he did in signing Joe Namath), Werblin poached Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson from the WHA. For those who might not remember, that was considered a huge coop given that Hedberg and Nilsson formed two-thirds of the best line in the WHA (along with Bobby Hull) – The Hot Line.
Toss in Shero and the draft pick to Philly and you have the Rangers being run like they would in the 80s by Phil Esposito (trading a 1st rounder for a coach) and By Neil Smith in the 90s and Glen Sather in the 2000s – bringing in hired guns – albeit not always in their prime like Anders and Ulf.
JPP, Bdl
Doing the all at the same time/age thing would eventually lead to a cap nightmare and necessitate breaking that team up, (assuming success and not Oilers redux). So you’d eventually default to the ‘feed in the new guys to abet the vets’ situation anyway. Continuity with having a mix of vet and ute is probably the better bet.
Anthony,
Ulfie, and Anders were added to a bunch of youth. Duguay, Deblois, Murdoch, Hickey, Don, and Dave, Greschner, Marios, McEwen, Farrish, and Johnstone. Long time Vets were also still there. Tkachuk, Vickers, Esposito, Plante, and Talafous.
Z pack and skjeL to mtl for 3rd pick overall and (I’d love Gallagher) Shaw.
Jk folks, just trying to start an expert riot 😉
This column from Bruce Garrioch is a couple of days hold, but does have potential implications for the Rangers. Garrioch writes that new Hurricanes GM Don Waddell might be open to trading the 2nd overall pick and already has turned down one deal because it wasn’t good enough.
Garrioch also speculates that former TB assistant Rick Bowness, one of two TB assistants let go (Brad Lauer was the other), could be on the Rangers radar as the veteran assistant for David Quinn. Bowness, listed as the associate coach, was in charge of the defense and PK.
The delicious irony is that Bowness was an assistant under AV for seven years in Vancouver and AV was an assistant under Rick Bowness for the three plus years Bowness coaches Ottawa. When AV came to NY, Bowness went to TB.
Wicky,
I would not hesitate to trade Zibanijad. I think he is a tease, and a losing type player. While I’m not convinced Skjei is going to be very good, I would only trade him for an upgrade on the wing.
Well THAT would be a complete rebuild. And Shaw is nothing more than a salary dump.
Celery Claus is Santa’s veggie nephew. A celery cap is what he wears on his head.
Sad to say, but I am not in love with anyone presently on this team.
Lust?
i thought the same thing as aneirin regarding cap nightmare which would come sooner rather than later. staggering talent is best way to go. Vegas, when they received draft picks, staggered them over about 3 years.
A celery dump is when , after a three day veggie diet, E3 explodes one real good in the hall bathroom.
I strongly consider that deal for the #2 wick. I want ze Russian winger!

quinn on how he handled eichel
I try to force myself to like our new couch and it’s occurred to be not too hard and become even easier with the every new piece of information…
HOF Uncle Larry has been lurking here again and borrowing from Carp 🙂
But associate/assistant coaches aren’t rogue operatives. They impart and install the head coach’s vision and system. The Rangers’ breakdowns weren’t the fault of Ulf Samuelsson in 2015-16, weren’t the fault of Jeff Beukeboom in 2016-17, and weren’t the fault of Lindy Ruff in 2017-18.
Which is to say, the clock has started on Jon Cooper.
Sorry, forgot the link to Brooks’ story. Youse guys will love his Undertaker mention.

4ever – we have a new couch? What happened to Quickie?
I also would not be adverse to trading zucc to Calgary for Bennett
I think Calgary may be adverse to that.
Just as I’m pretty sure Montreal would be just as adverse to sending the third overall pick to NY for Z and Brady boy, BDL 🙂
That entire apartment containing Skjei, VC, and Haze should be searched.
Bennett is trending in the wrong direction that’s for sure
DEDICATED to Cooscoos:
Quickie quickly (and with Fast) turned to feature of the past.
That’s what happened (se la vie), with departure of AV.
Let’s Go Vegas!!
Go knights go!
Anyone watching this game?
Yes
What an A-hole…
Good call by the refs for once.
…because it was more than obvious.
Knights are just flinging it aimlessly at the net like the last game and a lot of the first one. That’ll win you a cup. Smh
Weather the storm
Vegas better get going…
#teamOvi
That penalty call was hooooorrible.
Good period?
0-0 after 1
Book it
Swarm! Swarm!
That’s some Ranger defense right there.
March with some moves!
Neal is a diver
Screw oshie
Love those homer goal horns.
I hope those fans watching the game outside in Vegas brought a lot to drink.
Washington is winning 70% of the faceoffs. Can’t win a game with those stats against.
Now come on! Vegas…
Game over.
MAF needed that one
Plenty of time.
R-e-a-l Smooth.
Next goal is big.
Fleury should’ve had it. Cuzthenetsoff showed shot the ENTIRE way. Didn’t once look away from the goal after he entered the zone. That’s like a breakaway from the side. Gotta stop that.
Vegas is getting dominated for the second game in a row. If they don’t change their game plan soon this game ends with another W for Washington.
Haula line doing good things
Neal with the Tomahawk chop. Not sure if he got Holtby.
Refs lost the whistle again.
Sounds like Pierre is in love with Tom Wilson
Vegas suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Fleury is a moooooooorooooooooon.
Theodore stopped skating there
So is Theodore.
Vegas needs a good 20 minutes.
And 3 goals.
Wow. This “day with the cup” looks almost exactly like the last four “day with the cup” that I’ve seen….
Vegas has 13 shots already. It’s unbelievable that they haven’t scored yet.
It looks like Washington have found an answer to Vegas’ sandstorm. Their next goal might not come tonight.
That’s one…
Hey, I had to say something to lift the jinx.
Theodore suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Theodore is Vegas’ (Ranger) Girardi.
The refs who have swallowed their whistles just called their second not-a-penalty penalty in this game.
Refsuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk
The next goal is…
The total team IQ on both teams has dropped dramatically in the last five minutes.
I understand shooting through a screen…but not when the majority of guys on the ice are standing between you and the goaltender. That gets through one out of every 100 shots. Stop. Doing. That. Vegas.
And that’s all she wrote, folks.
Who REALLLLLY suck – Theodor! Big Time! He cost GK games.
I would sit Theodore next game. He is directly responsible for this loss.
OH V RULES SUCKERS!
I’ve learned the best time to get something to eat or go to the bathroom is when Vegas has the puck.
I WOULD SIT EV FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS!
If these playoffs have shown anything, it’s you need a real Nhl 4th line. Something the rangers haven’t had in a few seasons.
Papa
Careful, he’ll start whining to ilb.
Lol
Or a first line, Wicky.
Olga
That is also true
Not surprising that diks can’t not be diks for one day.
Not shocking that little biatches can’t just man up and apologize for being wrong and out of line.
So I guess they will just be chirped until they do.
The refs have been instrumental in deciding this series by not using their instruments.
Boo hoo it’s all the refs fault…cry about things much?!
You’re an absolute son of a bich, Wick and I wouldn’t apologize to someone that didn’t deserve it, especially if it was you, if it would save the world from annihilation.
Why don’t you apologize to me, Mr. I’m gonna cry because someone won’t be sorry for me.
You always have to get personal when I haven’t said a goddamn thing to you. I don’t talk to you, no reason you need to respond to me. Just learn to STFU for a change.
That’s not shocking in the least.
It’s must be a terrible life for you, being proven wrong in front of everyone here that can read then not being man enough to admit it.
The one thing that might make me start rooting for Washington is because there’s a major jackass rooting for Vegas.
Go back to your Tampa blog, everyone sees you for what you are.
Refs were pathetic, but the Caps dominated this game and could have won 6 or 7-2. They deserved this game.
2-1 after 3.
Root for Washington…who cares?!
Don’t talk about those “that can read” when you can’t even use proper grammar.
Why all the hostility?
Wicky. You’re a fukking dik. You know I’m not a Tampa fan and I know you that you’re an assh0le. So let’s leave it at that.
That’s better…
Boo hoo poor ev….talked trash but couldn’t take it, was proven wrong and couldn’t handle it, he got personal and threatened and lashed out but isn’t man enough to apologize
And he wonders why he gets chirped
Lmmfao
Cuz fukface can’t be an adult and just leave me the frig alone when I leave him alone. I left high school a long time ago and it’s time for him to do the same.
Bwahahahaha
Is there a way to just mute someone on here?
Ev
Until you man the falk up and apologize for the personal attacks, not a chance I’m not chirping you
Aww poor baby can’t handle it?!
Oh yeah. I’m getting personal.
You could just permanently go away like a little biatch since you can’t seem to be a man and apologize
I can’t look away…
Yes you are and yes you did
Olga
You shouldn’t
I’m sorry you’re an assh0le. There. I apologized.
A biatch being a biatch there,shocking
It’s even more sad that you don’t think you should apologize…pathetic really
Well, this cat fight is getting boring. Why don’t you two go back to your corners?
It’s funny…I didn’t see such a level of emotions, tentions and personal attacks during the Rangers games ever on thius blog. What gives? Can we all get along, guys at least when irrelevant for our fandom teams are playing. Please, stay cool and just analytical. Thank you.
That apology sounded sincere, Wicky. 🙂
I’ll stay right here and just wait for his next high pitched whine to chirp
Olga
Yeah, boy it was legit and very sincere 😉
(S)
Well, I think he meant it, anyway…
Ha, yeah, but not an actual apology like he should so thanks but no thanks
He’ll probably just lurk around and “like” comments instead.
It’s gotta be a really stupid argument for me to be the voice of reason on this. Just ask 4ever…
Olga
It’s ridiculous but I’m not letting it go, it’s went too far and he’s delusional if he thinks I’m dropping it until the sincere apology from him
FIRE OLGA!
LOT OF TIME LEFT!
It started out as some Tampa rooting (him) and Tampa hate (me) that I considered harmless on both sides, but he clearly didn’t like the Tampa loss and didn’t take it well.
I then made a point and proved it and he “lost” it and got way personal.
I’m way past “let it go”.
2-2 after 4
Thank you for your support, Papa.
Well, Wicky, I’ll leave you with some advice I got from Papa Folkyerself, just before they sprung the trap. “Don’t sweat the petty stuff and don’t pet the sweaty stuff”. Like Papa…
First bit of adversity for Vegas….how will they respond?
Olga
I always appreciate good advice, thanks.
Not sure I’ll follow it in this particular instance though 😉
Both of you better cool down or you’ll be sent to the virtual penalty box for a couple of days.
BEEF!
Is it time to panic for Vegas? They look completely neutralized by the Caps.
Ha ha ha
This got more juice than the nhl playoffs
In the words of Doc Emrick… “My Goodness” the fighting on here is getting to be ridiculous! I mean come on now…. We’re all grown men, are we not? I love coming here as a commonplace for our love for our crappy team, but…. it’s becoming less desirable by the day because of the constant bickering. Sheesh! What gives!
The Demon Rum?
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Ugh….
