Sorry for not doing it earlier since the last one was getting too long. But I was also waiting for Carp’s article in the Athletic.

Lovin’ the hat. Dangerously close to being an ass-hat.
Hank is such a valuable commodity to both US and to HIMSELF and to the NYR, that it seems ludicrous that he’s now, mid April, going to look into an MRI.

Lundqvist also said he’s unsure if he’s mentally prepared to go to Worlds b/c the last few months have been draining. “To go to Worlds, you need to be on top of your game mentally and physically, and you need to find that strength. I need some time to see if I have it.”
As a result, Lundqvist said he hasn’t decided if he will play for Sweden at the Worlds this year. He sees this time as an opportunity to get his knee back to 100 percent so he can train and prepare for next season the way he wants to.
Henrik Lundqvist said he’s been dealing with a knee injury all season, likely related to the injury he sustained at the World Championship last year. He said it didn’t affect how he played, but it impacted how he prepared. He’ll meet with the team doctors in the coming days.
Wick – good thing who ever made those bad deals is no longer in charge.
#pretzel-logic
BDL – Walstrom probably in top 8 or even 10, no?
AV stated that before each season, he met with the Hartford coaches and directed them to implement HIS system in all aspects of the game so that when he called someone up to the majors, he would be well-versed in AV’s philosophy and fit right in. Net result: This entire franchise, top to bottom, has a long road to hoe under a new coach.
The way this team is constructed at the moment, Hank may need four healthy knees next year if he wants to win some games….
SN,
I eliminated the Dmen, other than Dahlin. In order to guarantee one of the forwards they need to be top 5.
Wick we are in agreement but you’ll never win that argument. Sather is always to blame when things don’t work out. I remember the day they traded for Yandle. I said right then (as many others did) and there that if they had won that year Sather would get praise and if they didn’t he would get crucified for years to come for that along with so many other deals from pre 2005 etc.
Also want to point out (and beat the dead horse) that the Eric Staal deal wasn’t a failure. The GM went out and got a guy that could have been a huge help here and the coach that the organization trusted to do the right thing mismanaged the line up and used the guy as a spare part. That’s not a failed deal. And considering the way that John Moore and Anthony Duclair have worked out, I don’t think the Yandle deal was that bad either. Unless that first round pick in 2016-Dennis Cholowski – turns out to be a secret superstar I’d say it really doesn’t matter.
ps- ironically, they wound up with Brett Howden. He went 7 picks after that 20th overall selection they gave up in that Yandle deal. one pick after St. Louis selected Tage Thompson and 3 picks after Florida took Borgstrom..
James, you couldn’t be more correct in your assessment of Eric Staal. Direct hit.
Nonsense, Ilb. 3 knees and some stronger hair product at most.
I would be happy with any of them, but the one that would help change the dynamic of what they currently are is Tkachuk.
Can’t wait until we forfeit the 2 extra R1s in 2018 for tampering with Kovalchuk 🙂
Especially since we learned to pronounce his name properly 40 years ago.
again Eric Staal had a miserable year and was not healthy the year he played for us and Carolina.
would love to know who – that is now over 30 and playing bad/injured – is going to have a 30 or 40 goal season 2 years from now.
Even Hank’s hair dye is primo. Most guys his age turn orange.
Keith, third pair, Yandle. Eric, third line left wing, Staal.
Would like Tkachuck as well. Played in all 40 contests, tallying 31 points on eight goals and 23 assists … Led team in assists (23) and shots (131) and finished fourth in points and second in plus-minus (+15)
6’3″ 197 and growing…
DaveB- I was thinking about that too…Too much info is flying around. Luckily, they all quote the same source- a Russian sport magazine article written by a Russian guy. We all know they are all full of carcillo 🙂
as a Freshman.
Thanks, Coos.
Also, I hate to be “that guy” but I couldn’t possibly care any less about Worlds. I want the NY Rangers 100% healthy and re-charged come training camp. Especially these guys that were already banged up and playing through injuries all year.
Alex again explaining the E. Staal situation to us Rubes.
I find when zpack’s nmc kreider ces in. Could easily see him traded in the next 16 months.
“Nmc kicks in”
Wtf
you keep repeating yourself so will I cooscoos
stop with the after the fact analysis. i asked above who is going to be the Eric Staal 2 years from now.
Disagree in part there BDL. He looks to have playable toughness but not necessarily scoring prowess. We need both, but far easier and smarter ways to acquire gritty 2nd or 3rd line guys than use a top pick on them. Not saying you don’t pick him if he falls to 8 and say Wahlstrom is gone, but no way I’d take him if we got into the top 3.
—-
ILB, staal has a modified NTC staring July 1, but can never be sent to the minors without his permisson. Same goes for shattenkirk -https://www.capfriendly.com/players/kevin-shattenkirk
Alex, you continue to look at that Staal situation a bit differently than some of us and that’s fine.At the end of the day they assessed the situation the same as you did. And they were wrong. the big goal total this season is nice but is only a fraction of the big picture at center.
Injury should warrant the benefit of the doubt and probably would have had Staal just been injured and not used the same way AV used guys like Jimmy Vesey and Cody McLeod in his time here.
Anyhow, I won’t go back and forth over such a stale topic anymore. I’ve given my opinion on it.
Pete- I’ve heard elsewhere that Staal had a modified NTC, but CapFriendly says full NMC for the length.
How much you want to bet Hank’s Worlds injury was from Nylander tackling him?
Erik Karlsson is going to end up with whatever team takes Bobby Ryan off of the Senators. Depending on what happens in the playoffs and UFA with James Neal, watch out for Vegas.
do not trade this guy and give him a letter
Spotrac says modified NTC kicks in for next season http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/new-york-rangers/marc-staal-1938/
Can’t argue with that alex. Would love to see Kreider stick stound
Around. Autocorrect is killing me!
ILB
definitely conflicting reports on Staal
http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/new-york-rangers/marc-staal-1938/
Contract Notes:
No Move Clause: 2015-2017
Modified No Trade: 2018-2020
Cranky boneheads.
https://www.nhl.com/news/staal-rangers-agree-to-terms-on-contract-extension/c-749289
Think he has only a modified NTC starting July 1
wonder what happens with Beleskey. Our half of his contract is 1.9 million. About half of that can be buried in minors or is he part of answer to more bite in the lineup.
Conflicting is right. There is a big difference..
Something tells me that, other than training camp, we’ve seen the last of Matt Beleskey.
Beleskey will only cost them $875K in the minors, Alex. He did score 20 goals once. He also broke Stepan’s ribs once. So there’s that.
I’m concerned about Henriks knee. Also questioning why the mri, etc wasn’t done a month or so ago
Anyone else find it interesting as to which players we have heard from today, and which ones we have not heard from?
Just heard that TJ Miller was arrested for drunken bomb threat. Agape, I checked. Wrong Miller, tang god. Not JT.
Guaranteed you could ask all Rangers and not one could tell you what was or what’s up. Total confusion. Thanks, AV.
BDL – aside from henk – who were the shows/no-shows?
Hindsight is 20 20 but Bruins also passed on Barzal 3 Times…
Imagine if that happened here
Alexei Bereglazov, we hardly knew ya.

Alexei Bereglazov of New York Rangers (on loan to KHL Magnitogorsk) is on unconditional waivers to terminate contract. Returning home to Russia. Future plans would be announced soon.
i saw video so far by henrik, kreider and mika
very powerful message throughout canada and parts of the usa.
big and small many are following this message by putting out the sticks. hockey hall of fame among others.
love the hockey community
SN,
I was thinking Staal, and Zucc, but I see Zucc has met the media.
Rob, Hank’s knee injury in the Worlds happened on one of his last saves in the semifinal game, not as a result of the Nylander tackle. They had a lot of press over there about how they numbed the knee so he could play in the Finals (and make over 40 saves in the shootout win). Someone said he got clipped by a skater early this season after a goal and “tweaked” his knee. Might have lingered enough to be uncomfortable, but not enough to stop him from playing. Apparently Zucc had a season long knee injury too. I think it just means that these guys play through a lot of stuff that we would be screaming about! Might also explain why they don’t always look at the top of their games…
Staal has immunity with his NMC…
Gotta love Kreider.
saw shatty spoke too
https://www.sny.tv/rangers/news/what-henrik-lundqvist-said-tuesday-about-his-knee-the-season-and-the-future/271601350
lots from henrik
Man.. jealous I can’t keep up with the wide range of discussions that happen here. I have to just read all in one shot. Good stuff.
My thoughts from a full time lurker, rare post-maker:
Pat Roy- wouldn’t want him as coach, just to be clear. But he left Colorado when he saw writing on wall that his buddy Sakic wasn’t going to let him be part of roster decisions. Remember he was coach and VP of hockey operations. So not just the coach. And look how terrible the Avs were last season. Roy actually was pissed Rangers got his best defenseman.
Jim Montgomery – wanted all four lines contributing offensively. Up tempo, fun to watch. College level system required puck moving d, goalie that can withstand breakdowns, periods of no work. Some of these traits sounds eerily familiar.
Mike Keenan. What’s he up to?
Overall I think what needs to happen organizationally is not tanking, not signing high price former stars on back nine of career / 30s, trading away picks regardless of round. Every draft pick is a chance to win a franchise corner piece, regardless of what number it is. Quantity with a dose of scouting is the recipe to success.
Bottom line what needs to change is player development. We can fret about drafting someone at 7th or 21st and their skill ceiling/ potential. But why can’t a structure be created to take the raw talent and make the player achieve their potential as the baseline, but attempt to make each better than their initial potential. Datsuyk is a prefect example: world class vision, magician hands. Grit. Late rounder. Had time to develop and understand the game and then progress to highest level of the game.
A lingering knee injury in your 36 year old goalie is no joke. Given the player and the cap hit it should be a top organizational concern
sorry about the hat … or half ass-hat.
those who spoke today, in order: 44, 58, 90. 93, 20, 22, 17, 13, 36, 30, 76. As Mariano Duncan would say, “das it.”
in the old blog days I’d be posting transcripts/audio. now, ugotz
I can do ugotz too, Carp.
😃
Not exactly sure who the “new core” is, but Kreider’s part of it.
Do not trade Kreider.
Captain Kreider.
Sounds it, right Carp?
I’ve seen you do it, captain.
This site is unquestionably populated with the most knowledgeable Ranger & all around Hockey fans I have ever run across..it’s a really fun way to spend the morning or afternoon or evening catching up on the game and team I love.
Sounds like Kreider could become the next captain, I meant.
I do ugotz all the time
just asking…Is Nash better yet? I know he has said he has to be ….
no Staal
interesting
if there’s no trade instead of full no movement can definitely see a trade and we eat some (not 1/2 though)
Datsuyk was a world class player who happened to be drafted late and no doubt he had good coaching to aid in his development, but that will only get you so far. He clearly had “it” in him, whereas most players not matter how good the coaching around them can never reach that level. So agree we should put in good coaching at all levels, but in the early rounds especially we should be drafting the players we think have the most talent/potential in them, not the players with safe floors, but lower ceilings. Hope I wrong with Anderson, but sneaking suspicion they went the latter route with him.
I’d happily eat half of staal’s contract to get him off the roster. He was better this year, but be better to use his spot for one of the other 10 or so lefty defenseman we have in the system.
zucc some issues with his knee this season
Alex, is that why he had long shifts? Where is BDL?😃
Glad someone else brought of Roy, most here seemed to have the wrong story about him and the avs, glad someone posted the correct one.
Some can beat a dead horse. and beat it some more.
“zucc some issues with his knee this season”
Alex, Is that why he looked like a lazy pile of dung most nights?
If Roy were to coach the Rangers, I’m done.
Zucc probably injured his knee trying to get away from Roussel at the end of the game vs Dallas when he tried his stupid sideshow bob routine with the wrong guy.
I’d love it
One think everyone is not contemplating on Kovalchuk.
Two year deal:
First year is to keep the team in the thick of playoff chase, Gorton is not going to tank and if he were intending something of the sort, Viggy would still be coach.
Second year is to acquire more assets at the trade deadline, Gorton assuming that his younglings will have grown into their roles some.
Shattenkirk spoke the longest and the best.
also, Kreider still has to rehab his shoulder. The rib resection surgery was up high on his chest — I’ve seen the scar — and the shoulder never fully healed. So he’s going to Worlds, then rehab the wing. Sound right, ilb?
Kreider Should get C
Shatty could and probably should get a letter. The injury slowed him down but at this stage of career and the way I’ve seen him in the media he does have leadership qualities
Show of hands … wait, that won’t work … how many rookie defensemen can be on the team next season is Staal is gone, along with Shattenkirk and SkjeL (and assuming no Smith)? Pionk? Gilmour? Then who? Hajek is the most NHL-ready of the prospects. But can he make that jump at that age?
ps, Staal didn’t speak today because he’s sick.
I’d skip the Worlds, Carp. But the rest is about right. I understand why he wants to go. Either way, he should be a 100% by training camp.
✋🏻
Pionk, Lindgren, and Hajek.
✋🏻
Generalizing a bit here, the best NHL coaches aren’t the ones who played big minutes in many games, but the ones who spent most of the time on the bench/press box watching games.
When Staal speaks, useless. Like heavy rain falling on oceans.
If a Staal speaks in the forest and no one is around to hear it…..
When the Blueshirts start off 7-1-2 next season, should we route for the tank or the playoffs? SN, Pete?
Roy will be our next coach and will bring in Marty Brodeur as his assistant! 😉
That lazy, lazy Zucc, such an underachiever. Plays smaller than he is, won’t play if he’s not 100%, e.g. letting a niggling brain injury stop him from playing the final rounds in ’15. And thank god–his absence allowed them to make it to the semifinal that year. Leads the team in scoring year after year through sheer luck, really irritating considering how infrequently he goes hard. Other guys are so much more deserving of the scoring lead but are consistently robbed by excellent goaltending and posts and…stuff. Miller would have gone by him this season easily with those 17 points he got in TB and would have gotten here if Gorton hadn’t foolishly tossed him aside to please AV, whom he knew he was going to fire. Sucks up to Garden fans by pretending to try hard when it’s obvious he’s not really trying, fact. And he’s from No-o-orway, which sucks at hockey like he does, and he’s also Italian–sucky hockey nation, too–and did I mention he’s short. I mean, he’s really short. And funny-looking. Makes weird faces.
Hand up: O’Gara is the only rookie auditioner who didn’t regress, but not flashy so we can forget about him.
Norm, remember how you were so sure the Rangers were going to the playoffs up until sometime in February this year? Or was it March?
By a show of hands, how many of you are raising your hands?
I was rooting for them to lose post-trade deadline because each win hurt their draft position and each win in fact did so, but to each his/her own if that win in Vancouver or Calgary was more important. I’m not rooting for them to lose every game next year at all, quite the opposite. However, I don’t want them to sign a bunch of UFAs in order to field a team that can just sneak into the playoffs or just miss if it means they aren’t developing young players along the way. And most importantly, I don’t want them to bring in a coach who will sit young players in a tied or close game in October, November, etc., let alone in a meaningless game if/when the playoffs are out of reach like AV did at the end.
Was Shatty in a leadership role in St. Louis? He seems born to it, kinda like Stepan. I wouldn’t mind Zucc or Kreider with the C. Hoping they are both here in the Fall, fully rehabbed (Shatty and Hank too) and ready to go.
Norm, if they can move staal and smith, I’d be fine with O’Gara being the 6 or 7. Just doesn’t make a ton of sense to use him over someone else in the system who has a higher potential ceiling if those two guys are still on the active roster
I wouldn’t mind cashing out on Zucc while there is still some value.
I missed the whole Pionk regressing thing.
Pionk regressing was a Norm “stir the pot” observation over the last few games.
O’Gara would be fine for 7 role. They already have Kampfer signed for next year at a very reasonable cap hit of $650K. I don’t think O’Gara is better than Kampfer to justify almost $1M QO.
I’d love to see Brendan Gallagher on this team.
Won’t hapoeb, but love to see it!
“Happen” ugh
I’d agree. Hajek is projected closer than Lindgren, and I think Pionk is a lock. Don’t think he regressed, but he did plateau as expected. O’Gara is a longshot, IMO. DeAnger, too. You won’t be seeing Sproul no more.
I’m going to see Lindgren in Hartford Thursday. Maybe do a story on him, and one on Ronning. Anybody got any good questions to ask them?
Hope I see Smith. And of course Chytil and Andersson and Georgiev.
so Shattenkirk, SkjeL, Pionk, Hajek, Lindgren, Staal next season?
I would love to see Zucc traded to Columbus. And then I would like to see Zucc pull the 2 minute shift routine. Then I would like to see Torts reaction to the Zucc 2 minute shift routine.
Yes, Carp. Tell Ronning to start the diet used by Michael Phelps.
I’m not convinced Smith isn’t here next year. Maybe it’s a wishful thinking.
ilb I see a solid shot for The Smith Redemption tour. Would be a helluva story.
Smith (unless they move him)
….I smell a Battle Royal in the works.
Re: d, maybe we can sign Mike Green when they get rid of Staal. Then everyone will miss Girardi AND Staal next year : D
The Rangers M/o is to start rookie DMen in Hartford. Kampfer will be here with Smith. Pionk with Staal. Shatty with Skjel. Unless they land a top 4 or two in a deal.
O’gara will be 7
Let’s play would you rather:
Staal or Mike Green?
O’Gara or John Moops?
Shatty or Oduya?
Brendan Smith or Ian Cole?
That’s just to give everyone an idea of what’s out there this summer👍🏻
John Moops definitely
I’m thinking Kampfer is the 7.
Lindgren or Hajek start in Hartford.
Skjei, Staal, Lindgren/ Hajek, Pionk, Shatenkirk, Smith, Kampfer.
Staal/ Green, pass, but if had to, Staal.
John Moore over O’Gara. Not close.
Shatenkirk, over Oduya.
Smith/ Cole is to close to call. Pass.
Carp – Ask Ronning if he has given his father any “grief” about being a part of the enemy since the Blueshirts beat his Pops in 1994?
Lindgren – How his time in the Juniors might have prepared him for the NHL (playing against elite talent).
Could ask both what their NHL relations have told them about adjusting to pro life –> Ty with his Dad and Ryan with his brother Charlie (MTL goalie).
There may be no Hartford by Thursday.
O’Gara’s the only one on the back end who will occasionally at least attempt to hit someone. Get rid of Staal before all of them start shuffleboarding, uselessly fronting four feet in front of goal scorers, and also screening Hank just for the icing on the cake.
AV sitting on bed in Hyatt suite, assessing his substantial monetary situation with hotel ballpoint and pad.
Where’s Maria?
Jersey to the left of me, Connecticut to the right, stuck in the middle with il duce. Taxing situation.
Hey Carp…ask Ronning and Lindgren what NHL players do they try to emulate …be interesting since we have not seen them play other than clips..thx
AV taking Pidto with him, like Michael Jackson and his monkey.
Big Pionk fan. Didn’t stop me from noticing his slowdown at the end as teams adjusted. He’ll need to adjust back, which I could see him doing.
Pionk came out of nowhere and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went back to nowhere.
He’s a real nowhere man!
Something tells me we will all be speechless when see the opening day roster. This cotton candy crew needs a tenacious forcheck next year, and I am on board for Captain Kreider. I just hoping our next coach rides like the horse he is!
For now SELL! SELL! SELL!
Would take John Moore back at the right price for depth.. with lower expectation and little term.
Carp, is Ronning the first player that has to look up at you while you guys have a discussion?
Papa, sorry for the tardy response. Shoot-me-now faculty meeting. It’s true that I absolutely thought the Rangers were going to the playoffs, right up to the tear-down deadline. So, yes, I remember, and of course we’ll never know.
I’m with you Norm. I thought they’d squeak in until the letter came out and the wheels fell off. Was thinking/hoping Hank and Pavs would continue to mask the deficiencies in their own end. Ah well.
NEW POST
Norm being checked again to see if he has all his faculties.
