The winner gets a one year subscription to the Athletic. If the winner already has one, it can be gifted to someone else you know. All I need is a valid email address which will be used to sign in to the Athletic website. The contest starts now and will go until the Go Time post at 7:30 pm
Some rules.
1. Same as the last contest. I don’t have time to go through hundreds of posts, and check IP addresses for double entries. So if you never posted on Rangers Report 2 ( since Doodie took over), your entry will not count. Apologies in advance, but that’s the only way to avoid spending too much time judging the contest.
2. This one is easy.
– Pick the score. It has to be exact. Not closest. Not margin of victory
– First tiebreaker: Game winning goal
– Second tiebreaker: Rangers’ shots. This one can be the closest, but WITHOUT GOING OVER
– Third tiebreaker: Penguins’ shots. Again, it can be the closest, but WITHOUT GOING OVER
3. Can you, bozos, PLEASE copy and paste my entry and make your own changes? It’s just so much easier for me to score it.

SO I guess all those times I wrote that I love Miller’s game, that it was built for the playoffs, that if he ever figures it out he’s going to be a really good player …
I was secretly hating him. LOL
about Stevie Y, do you think he trades Namestnikov for Miller straight up? I highly doubt it.
@Carp – no he wouldn’t make that trade, not enough letters. Have to include Hayes to have letter parity.
Carp hates all the Rangers 🙂

He may have Carp as Miller brings a heavier/tougher dynamic to their team and Names was probably gone in this offseason or the next given pending cap issues (which may mean miller is only in Tampa a couple seasons). But Yzerman was actively shopping him clearly as it was the rangers who initiated here (which makes it frustrating they didn’t get a little more out of Tampa overall).
—-
To me Miller is a good but not great player and I don’t think he and AV ever saw eye to eye. Not to mention that he is the kind of player that should do very well when paired with elite players as he has good overall skills and can not worry about doing too much given who his linemates are. He never had and likely never was going to have that luxury with the Rangers as he was paired with similarly skilled/flawed players and of course never a #1 center. So best of luck to him and while a wish we got a little more, he was going to be wasted here until the Rangers ever got a real #1 center, which may not happen in our lifetimes! The above largely holds true for Kreider tho I think he is a better/more talented player overall.

Carp,
I think that’s exactly what he did. Miller for Namestnkov.
I read that somewhere. That the Rangers brought up Miller after the agreement on McDonagh was done, and Namestnikov was the player decided upon. Could be BS, but someone in Tampa wrote it quoting Yzerman.
I miss Miller and McDonagh. Neither will be replaced by a better player. and I am sure they will excel in Tampa.
Timing, economics, age, etc. It is pretty rare these days that player stays with one team for more than five years.
i hate it because it means I am getting old. It beats the alternative I guess.
Maybe I’m wrong … or maybe TB decided it was not going to be able to re-sign Namestnikov, and the Rangers decided they would not be able to, or willing to, re-sign Miller.
so much extraneous garbage has to be determined with the cap the way it is now. so you have to trade a Hagelin, or a Stepan, or a Miller … just because. It’s also why good teams go to crap (Chicago, LA) so quickly.
Carp, I hold to my opinion that while you praised JT at times; on most occasions you had problems with his game. Kinda pointless because I don’t really visit this site anymore because the boneheads always need to have a scapegoat or whipping boy on this team; & JT slotted in nicely in the role here. Besides he’s gone to another team. So let the future be written. In the words of Bobby D –
Then time will tell just who fell And who’s been left behind. When you go your way and I’ll go mine.

either way, per the Squirrel, they wanted Miller’s heavy game to complement Kucherov and Stamkos on that line though he has also played within a couple of different combos since arriving in TB as they figure out new pieces heading into stretch run.

rgp: “boneheads always need to have a scapegoat or whipping boy.” Surely you’re referring to some other website? Always the last line of defense when scapegoating gets called out here–we’re not as bad as the other sites. That said, there are many ways into a useful debate about the team and its players and coaches, and scapegoating, while irritating, is one of those ways. I prefer pompous pronouncements.
RGP
Never 1 size fits all on the scapegoats here.
Almost every player falls into that with 1 or more posters here. I don’t think that’s exclusive to this site either.
Interesting, Alex. I don’t seem to recall you “hating on” anyone in particular.
Frankly every fan base looks for scapegoats – especially fan bases with teams that stink (like us this year especially). If you think the Boneheads are bad, you should see some sites on Facebook. Makes me wonder how some people can be Rangers fans at all.

Where’s Wicky? Did you check inside of the horse?
Just saw that 21 years ago today Joe Mullen became the first American to score 500 goals. Just think, he could have/should have been a Ranger! he was an undrafted free agent who was on the short list of names that Herb Brooks was looking at for the 1980 Olympics.
The story goes that Mullen passed on a shot at the Olympics because of family issues. The Rangers had the first crack at Mullen but didn’t sign him, for whatever the reason. That is when Blues GM Emile Francis swooped in and signed him. Francis had created a youth league in Manhattan after watching Joey and his friends playing street hockey.
Of course, if Mullen signed with the Rangers he would either have gotten hurt or been used as a checking winger until he got traded (because every Ranger gets traded) and then he would have become the big goal scorer he was.
Wait a minute. JT was our scapegoat? Aw, heck, I thought it was Zook. : )

Joey Mullen…Westside boy! I though Zucc and Staal were the ones hated around here not JT.. Rooting for Tampa in playoffs will be tough because while the 1st round pick is nice we will still have to listen to the whining that we still did not get enough for Miller and McD trades

I think there is a 50/50 split amongst fans about Miller. Some feel he was uncoachable, and needed to go. Others feel the coach was holding him back. We will soon find out. I think it’s pretty similar with Kreider. I don’t want Kreider traded, but I would love to see him with a coach who plays him 20 minutes a night. To a lesser extent, Buchnevich , and Vesey fall into the it’s the coach/ it’s player argument.
As far as scapegoats go,
For me if you play a lot, and fail to produce to the level you play(Zucc), you deserve blame.
BDL
Miller Hayes Grabner was a very solid line.
But they kept being broken up.
Now 2 of the 3 are gone
Miller loved AV, Bazooka Joe was never the problem. He’s a great coach with a lots of good looks and over 600 victories. He is a master strategist, wink wink nod nod!
If you read Hank’s last interview carefully it’s pretty obvious AV is as good as gone after this season.

JT a bonehead scapegoat? LOL. Miller was pretty much loved and admired here as I see it. A bit of criticism as with almost everyone else, but minimal. When he was referred to as “The. Hated One,’ it referred negatively to AV, not to Miller. Sometimes I wonder who some of these posters are and if they’re attending ESL classes.
Ilb,
I think you are right about AV being gone, and I think that is what makes trading Miller a little confusing. I think Namestnikov is a good fit as a center. Again though, a little confusing as to why they go through an entire season with a gaping hole at center, while waiting for the two centers they drafted to develop, and then trade for a center. I just feel like it muddied the waters a bit.
If you notice that you have expired after taking our product, stop taking our product and notify your physician.
Wonder no more coos. I do not attend an ESl class; actually when it comes to the written word, adroit as a descriptive adjective more often comes to mind. Simply put this is my opinion on AV, Miller, boneheads, Carp, et al. Surely in the modern world a differing point of view is permissible. NO?
Guess I picked the wrong day to stow my roof-rake, alas.
I think it safe to say that the evaluation of JT’s game on the old Carp site & this one suffers from the Rashomon effect.
Miller was our “team NA” player…young fast gritty and smart. The first round draft picks keep me happy. McD gone is awesome!! Always hated the C on him…hated. Our team will be faster and I do see a Russian conection forming. Buchy Namesk and Kovalchuk

Lundqvist interview link, ilb? Still trying to find the one about Hayes suddenly watching videos.
Miller wasn’t “smart,” and McDonagh’s exit isn’t “awesome.”
“Awesome” probably the most misused word in the English language, particularly in schools. It used to be you’d have to be looking at Mt. Everest.
Gorton made the glaring mistake of putting together a team of too many softballs (physically and. mentally) in a hardball league. Watching to see how long it takes him to make the proper correction.
Groovy insight
I’ll say it again. Miller is 25, a millionaire, playing the game he loves in the NHL. He is married to a beautiful wife; who is expecting a child in April. He will soon be adding a third home to go along with his NY condo. He celebrated his 25th birthday with a hatty last night. & has a great opportunity to play for a team that will challenge for the Stanley cup this spring. Coos I think JT Miller has got it figured out in this life; this is his smarts
You. his Uncle?
I will say that Gorton jettisoned one of only a few hard-nosed players here and I am not happy about that at all.
When he first arrived, it was rumored that he had a long-standing “attitude” problem but it was never publicly defined.
ahh a reminder why this site & the posters are like George in the Seinfeld “Comeback” episode. No I am a lifelong Ranger fan Coos, entitled to my opinion of JT. Surely you respect Stevie Y’s opinion that he wants a kid like Miller, no?
Is our King Henrik functioning as a king’s making/destroying grey cardinal? First it was Torts. now AV?
As for Miller, – his most consisting feature was inconsistence. Sometimes, he made tremendously tremendous, unbelievably silly mistakes and sometimes even more tremendous play, mixed admired physicality with relaxing gliding, has character’s issues with few coaches and some unrecorded reputation in the locker-room. Hence, inconsistency in his game’s and personal evaluation, reflected in fans posts. I’m sure his started success in Tampa is adrenalin rush, but eventually we will see same, familiar pattern for his whole carrier. He is definitely is not “a dime for dozen”, but “their name is a Legion”, IMO…
realgrace, there’s a lot of mileage between me having problems with a guys game and disliking, or even hating him,
But if anybody wants to accuse me of hating this player or that, feel free. I don’t really give a crap. And it won’t be the first or last time.
Go Gaels!
Yes McD gone is awesome. The cap space , first round pick , ripping the C off his jersey and him being injured when we need him…all gone ahhhh

Carp, I never said you hated him, but in my opinion you weren’t a big fan & took him to task often for his game. or lack there of. Your comments were never hateful – just quick to blame him for his mistakes. I got the vibe you were down on him whenever he screwed up. Look his game has weak areas but overall his attributes outweigh this. He has tremendous hockey instincts; some of the stuff he tried & pulled off with passing & making plays; rom a fan point of view was exciting to watch. You’d have to be blind to not see this. Plus his upside is his physicality; he checks, he gets the other team pissed off. Maloney praised this in his game repeatedly; JT shows up to play the game. & this team is gonna miss his onions
Can I request we now direct our hate to between the glass, right on Pierre?
