I think the roster is starting to sort itself out. My prediction on the 23.

I believe the Rangers trade or waive Holden. DeAngelo has takes the job from him. It makes no sense to have Graves or Pionk here as the 7, that’s why I went with Kampfer as the 7.
I saw some things from Chytil last night that told me he needs to go back. Physically he’s not ready. Anderson could still sneak on the team, but having him as the 4th line center would not be the right thing to do. I originally felt if Andersson did not make it, Hartford would be the place for him. Now I think he needs to develop his offensive game more. That won’t happen in Hartford . Sweden is the spot for that. Nieves is the 4 by default. He’s been ok. He can skate, and has NHL size. He can hold the fort till his replacement is found.
UKRanger
I think one of the kids sticks around, not sure which one right now, i was convinced it was Andersson but other names like Lettieri, Nieves etc.. are getting mentioned with regularity.
I think Chytil goes back, or they could stash him in Hartford for a potential call-up, get used to N.America rinks etc..

Good morning, boneheads!
I happened to agree with you, guys. No reason to rush either of these first rounders. Not sure where is the best place for them. I think Andersson should play big minutes in Hartford….
I believe Lettieri, Farnham, Fontaine are still pretty much in the mix. Nieves seems to be the front-runner for 4th line C. Also, looking at tonight’s line-up, Paul Carey still has a chance. He had some moments when he surprised me with his play.
I believe Buchnevich will have a break out, or near break out season. He appears to be more confident, and looks stronger on the puck.
Let’s hope Zucc isn’t the one to deal with Gudases of the league this season
UKRanger
As long as Butch engages in our zone too – otherwise he’ll be in AV’s Chateau Bow Wow!!

I like Fontaine quite a bit. I think graves deserves a spot but numbers make me think he won’t get one. I’m still not sold on Nieves, but at least he made it to 50% on draws last night.
Cross Check Charlie
I’d hate to be the one that makes the decisions on who to keep and cut, but I certainly wouldn’t keep a guy like Farnham or Desjardins on the team. I don’t see where they bring anything.
I also don’t believe that keeping a youngster on the team will harm his development. If they can put up with his mistakes, then by March they might have a player.
UKRanger
I’m with you Charlie – keep the kids, they will develop faster if they’re allowed to play, I can’t believe Desjardins hasn’t been released yet.
Booby
Seems to me that Chytil and Zucc have developed some impressive chemistry rather quickly, so much so that I would really like to see Chytil get his nine games with the big club before deciding on what to do with him. He’s willing to shoot from anywhere, and has shown the ability to put himself in the high chance areas. He just might be the kind of player that we’ve needed to pair up with Zucc. (Probably getting ahead of myself though).
Definitely agree with ILB on Andersson. Would love to see him get 20+ minutes a night in Hartford for a while. He needs to play in all situations there.
Also quite impressed with Fontaine & Lettieri so far. Didn’t notice him before last night, but man, Paul Carey has some serious wheels on him.
Wicky says “obviously” switchbacks suck
I wouldn’t be shocked if Desjardins is released soon.
It also wouldn’t shock me to see him stick mainly for his ability to win important draws, which the rangers have had a real issue with the past few years.
I like Hank to get the third star at best. When he gets one of the top two, it usually tells me that our D in front of him still sucks. And now we have Topo the Justice Beast as our last line of defense against the thugs of the league who will enjoy chasing our new kids around.
Pete
No need to rush the two centers but would still keep them around the 9 games so they get a sense of what regular season play is, could maybe see putting Anderson in Hartford but no harm with him going back to Sweden either. Hope to be proven wrong, but seems like he may have been too safe a pick so high in the draft, i.e. he may be a solid pro, but not sure his ceiling is above a jan erixon/Sergei nemchinov type. Chytl has some talent for sure, could be a player down the road.
—
However, likely means we will have a pretty weak roster of centers with Desharnais and Nieves both better as 4th line centers. Really will need Hayes to play up to his ability consistently (may be asking too much given his track record) and Mika to find another gear (still not in game shape yet or at least I hope not, goal last Night notwithstanding)
And unless Chytil is pronounced and called Chytil with a ‘ch,’ I don’t want him around anymore.
BobbyO
I think they are gonna go with Andersson at center….looks like he will play good 2 way game they are looking for
Wicky says “obviously” switchbacks suck
This was off of spectors rumours this morning…started out talking about the pens looking for a 3C
“That could also open things up for the New York Rangers as J.T. Miller is now expected to start the season on the wing instead of center. Rangers GM Jeff Gorton hasn’t ruled out adding a center via trade. “
SN
BDL – think you are spot on. They are letting the kids enjoy the experience and possibly getting a quick run on Broadway before shuttling off to develop their games and bodies.
.
Nieves has impressed with his neutral zone play and wheels. Too bad the league suspended Day Jar Dens and he wasn’t able to get some run, he may be a Black Ace to start out.
.
Shatty is who he is. Don’t think he was ever a defensive presence and McCapt will once again covering for 2 in Dzone. Shatty needs to get the PP going and be the 5v5 blueline presence in Ozone to offset some of his defensive liabilities. His puck handling is very impressive.
.
Butch got caught napping at end of period; good lesson to learn in preseason. If they league/refs continues to call the stick to hands, players like Butch and Zucc with incredible mitts are going to benefit enormously.
Beezle
Bonjour boneheads! I think I lean towards the Brooksie take on the two kids. Send them back so they can get a lot of minutes and better develop their games (and bodies). If the NYR are in a position, they can always recall them for the playoffs and have up to 9 games of availability and then decide given the circumstances if it is worth burning the eligibility. But it does not seem management views this year as rebuilding or transition and that probably is not a situation lending itself to strong development of these two.
Bdl
From what I saw, no Holden again tonight.
BobbyO
thing is Brooksie is making comparisons to rookies who broke in 20 years ago…kids breaking in today are better skill wise better prepared physically

I still think the main point of contact was the shoulder, but then Desjardins brought his arm up and made slight contact with the head. Questionable call for sure, but who the hell knows what’s legal/illegal anymore.
The Rangers have announced that the projected lineup for tonight in Philly is:
Goalie: Ondrej Pavelec, Brandon Halverson
Forward: JT Miller, Kevin Hayes, Bobby Farnham, Boo Nieves, Jimmy Vesey, Paul Carey, Michael Grabner, David Desharnais, Gabriel Fontaine, Filip Chytil, Pavel Buchnevich, Vinni Lettieri
Defense: Brendan Smith, Neal Pionk, Steven Kampfer, Ryan Graves, Brady Skjei, Tony DeAngelo
SNY said that AV wants to go from 34 players to 24-25 after tonight’s game. I know the team has a trip up to Lake Placid as a teambuilding exercise so i would guess the final cuts would come after that.
tomb
I don’t think either of our first rounders are really ready for the NHL regular season. It is good to have promising youth again, but after that 10 game mark, there is no turning back.

I think tonight’s cuts will pretty much define the starting lineup, especially if 24-25 includes the 2 first rounders. They may want to take them to Lake Placid with the rest of the team before sending them to their destinations.
ILB – His Mom and Dad named him Anthony then Anthony it is! 🙂 All I know I hate it when people call me Tony. When I first started at Iona I was known as Tony because there was already an Anthony – who is a good friend of mine to this day. When he left I made it known that my name is Anthony; however, the friend’s family still calls me Tony. I’d rather be called by one of my nicknames than Tony.

CCCP,
the Leafs and Canadiens were in the league nine years before the Rangers existed, the Bruins two years before. Than there was that whole mess in the 50’s where the owner of the Red Wings also owned the Blackhawks, owned the Boston Garden and had a controlling interest in MSG. Any player that looked to be a star that wasn’t in Toronto or Montreal’s territory was shunted to the Red Wings. The whole story about how the Rangers had a 17 year old Gordie Howe in for a tryout and let him slip through their fingers is bunk. The Rangers were not allowed to sign him because Detroit decided they wanted him. The fix was most definitely, in.
Don’t forget that the Rangers were hit hard during WWII – losing goalie Jim Henry the Colville brothers, Alex Shibicky to the Canadian arned forced and Lester’s son Lynn joined up with the USA. Lester Patrick anticipated the NHL shutting down so he sold off players and shut down a top farm team. The Rangers were struggling so much that Patrick wanted to suspend operations for the duration of the war, but that would have left the league with five teams.
It got so bad for the Rangers that Coach Frank Boucher had to play and averaged nearly a point a game over the 15 games he played.

Nothing like taking advantage of a heatwave. At the New England Patriots home game against the Houston Texans, this past Sunday, temperatures rose in Foxboro wicked high, up to the high-80’s. It got so hot that vendors ran out of bottled water. Hot fans, however, were desperate. That is when the Patriots started selling plain tap water in soda cups to their supporters for $4.50. Some reports say that the price rose to $5.00 during the course of the game. After the story appeared in the Boston media, the Patriots apologized for taking advantage of their fans.
Late goal again…but at least kids are trying really hard. That positive. Also, despite of a goal, this Pavelec guy is not too bad after all, so far, IMO.

Yeah, Shattenkirk has been underwhelming especially on the power play. I hope it’s because he’s coasting.

From what I saw, no Holden again tonight.
thing is Brooksie is making comparisons to rookies who broke in 20 years ago…kids breaking in today are better skill wise better prepared physically
Andersson and Chytl were playing in adult leagues, not juniors or college. Let ’em play.
Let them play, we have Pumps and Zucc to back them up if things get tough…
I guess I missed this morsel, why is Desjardins suspended?
DeAngelo and Chytil going back to back tonight. They’re getting every opportunity, and so far, both have made the best of it. I’m loving DeAngelo’s game so far. He has to make the team.
Hit to the head.
Is there a line up for tonight out yet?
Thanks Charlie!
For this, Wick…
https://www.nhl.com/video/desjardins-suspended-two-games/t-277440360/c-52930903
Wonder if he’s like the Bahama bomba and “elbow his way out of the league”?!
Thanks booby!!
That’s right, wood with the academy award and it couldn’t of happened to a nicer guy.
I still think the main point of contact was the shoulder, but then Desjardins brought his arm up and made slight contact with the head. Questionable call for sure, but who the hell knows what’s legal/illegal anymore.
Wicky – I got this from SNY:
I don’t think either of our first rounders are really ready for the NHL regular season. It is good to have promising youth again, but after that 10 game mark, there is no turning back.
18 year olds kids. How many guys selected before them will play in the NHL? Did you see Nolan Patrick yesterday? I did a few times I guess.
#NHL all-time playoff wins: Original Six teams
Montreal Canadiens 429
Detroit Red Wings 325
Boston Bruins 301
Chicago Blackhawks 264
Toronto Maple Leafs 248
New York Rangers 244
Am I the only one who’s rooting for Vinny Lettieri to make the team? I don’t know why, but something in his game tells me that he can bring a little added secondary scoring and energy to this team while carrying a very little cap hit.
ILB – I am rooting for Vinni as well. Also D’Angelo, too – a paesan and an Anthony, what more could a person want 🙂
Hey, he wants to be called Tony…
Definitely rooting for little V! I mentioned last night how much I like his game and energy!
Carey has impressed me as a 4th line forward option. The idea of using Pumps on the 4th line is just dumb but AV likes his top 12 lineup.
Someone will have to stick around until Fast is ready.
I’d be appalled if DeAngelo doesn’t make the team. The only negative against him is that he is waiver exempt
Anthony
Thanks
I think tonight’s cuts will pretty much define the starting lineup, especially if 24-25 includes the 2 first rounders. They may want to take them to Lake Placid with the rest of the team before sending them to their destinations.
We have a pop-star in the making…
http://www.bardown.com/mika-zibanejad-released-his-second-single-and-it-s-straight-fire-1.866745
Long live auto-tune!
Jordan Nolan on waivers. 28 yr old, one year left at $925K. Anyone interested? Probably 2-3 years ago
More interesting than Nolan is Shinkaruk.
Hopefuoly Tony has cleaned up his act off the ice and doesn’t pull anything stupid on the ice and personally I’d like it if didn’t support you know who, but just me!
His mama named him Clay, Imma call him Clay!
Nolan and shinkaruk would both be of interest I’d think.

Nolan would be interesting
The more kids we keep, the more they will be greeted on the ice with cheap shots and ‘welcome to the NHL, kid.’ Good thing we anticipated that and have Topo to square things away.
“I know the team has a trip up to Lake Placid as a teambuilding exercise so i would guess the final cuts would come after that.”
Nothing says team like getting cut after having to drag logs up a mountain over the weekend.
Topo’s fists are what have kept him in the league up until now.
You fool with Zucc, you invite the old and irritating debilitating Billy Smith ankle chop. Y0u want to keep it up, the lumber gets higher as Topo gets crotchety.
CCCP,
the Leafs and Canadiens were in the league nine years before the Rangers existed, the Bruins two years before.
Love the new nhl game. The expansion draft for a 32nd team is cool.
Doodie,
Want to guess what city I put the 32nd team in?! 😉
I want 40 NHL teams so that Stephen Hawking and Al Sharpton can play.
and Mcilrath
I watched the Detroit game late last night. All the regulars were scratched. McIlrath played over 17 minutes and was a +2.
He still can’t skate like today’s NHL d-man, but he was wearing an NHL jersey.
Mike Milbury will be in the booth covering for Eddie Olczyk this year. Vomit.
Adorable little fists at that, Gravy
Gudas’s lunch the day of a game weighs more than Zucc
His body has cotton stuffing, but his fists are made of gummy bears.
>Mike Milbury will be in the booth covering for Eddie Olczyk this year. Vomit.
Can we designate Salmon Joe for assignment?
Lettieri: I was at Giants Stadium the night his dad was in goal for the Minnesota Kicks against the Cosmos, who won the playoff seies on a shootout goal by Franz Beckenbauer against Tino. It was a wild night for sure. So….I hope he kid makes the cut.
What’s the odd romance with Milbury from ABC Sports? Does he work cheap?
BTW, ABC and ESPN are hooked up and both suck equally. Disney owns them and is threatening to imminently pull them from Cablevision’s (Optimum’s) new owner. Disney is being dragged down by these two flatulant albatrosses.
If some bright bulb took over ESPN and concentrated on Sports rather than Politics, he’d probably be as rich as Carlos Slim.
You just reminded me that Anthony Weiner tweeted all these junk pics under the pseudonym Carlos Danger.
Aaron Hernandez’s boyfriend in prison is literally and figuratively trying to get ahold of Carlos Danger for long corridor walks, dandelion wine, and plastic fork pie treats.
Do we need a new thread?
Instigator, LOL. That guy couldn’t instigate a library bake sale.
What good is a new thread without commentary?
Pavelec looks big.
I agree, coos. Traffic’s been slow during pre season games.
Desharnais is standing out. He drew that penalty, then scored on the power play.
I like DD…
Kudos to you, 3CP as well as to Doodie (especially), ilb, and all the others who kept this excellent blog alive.
Yet another reason to middle finger the NFL.
https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2017/09/25/when-bottled-water-ran-out-gillette-stadium-charged-fans-4-50-for-tap-water
Late goal again…but at least kids are trying really hard. That positive. Also, despite of a goal, this Pavelec guy is not too bad after all, so far, IMO.
I think DD guaranteed himself a roster spot in the first 12 minutes of this game.
Nieves lost his man in front on that Philly goal. Not a good highlight. Every play is magnified in this game for these fringe guys.
I cancelled the NFL channel today. I was on hold with Direct TV forever.
My interest in the NFL drastically reduced about 5-6 years ago. Moving away from the running game coupled the nonsense showboating were the nails in the coffin.
Jets fan so a franchise QB might bring me back.
DD probably did guarantee himself a roster spot and I’m pretty sure I don’t like that.
Boo probably guaranteed a trip to Hartford with his defensive play.
3rd grader mistake lead to a goal, but that how they learn, right? Or not…
DD too small to win puck at board.
That last 2 on 1 goal. Boo played it OK I thought. The clear breakaway that was created by Fontaine’s blatant miss which banked off the end boards. Hard to defend if executed well.
I don’t see Jessiman on the roster?
I am definitely OK with Pavelec as a backup based on this and his last performance.
Tomy from AZ is pretty impressive. Good skating, puck work. His one-on-one defense is pretty good too.
Nieves has no business in the NHL, he’s an AHL player.
Second goal, Boo has his man covered. Then after the pass instead of following him to the goal he went searching for the puck. Flyer player left all alone at the side of the goal for a tap in. Boo!
Those aren’t boos, Joe.
I agree. Boo is not ready. I dont know if he ever will be. He has been outplayed by free agents all camp.
speaking of booze
Andersson, Chytil, Lettieri, Carey – look willing and ready for NHL. Pleasant observation.
Anthony (don’t call me Tony) D’Angelo is also fitting in the roster, if paired with defensively (read: stay home Dman).

no rangers
talbot made it
Whoopsie!
Plenty of time.
Didn’t see veterans/leaders – JT, Haze and Staal all game. Maybe it’s a good thing?…
This scrimmage inevitably will come to the end. This way or other…I like other more.
Tied up!
Skills competition again? Rangers become the specialists in that at preseason…
Extra innings
One point is better than nothing, right?
Staal has been invisible. Nash too.
Lol
Nieves the weak link on that line. Centre woes continue.
Double D was decent, not great at the dot, but decent. He seems more like a NHL 3C than 4C to me.
I like Fontaine but I think he’s going to be a victim of the numbers game.
Pageau
I like Carey. Never heard of the guy before this preseason. He’s got some wheels and likes to shoot the puck.
Well… that was fun. I doubt there will be too many surprises in the cuts. Hartford should have a much better team this year.
Wasn’t Carey in the caps organization before?
Tired of our guys with precious little help in front for our netfellow. Especially big goof Haze who loves to stand around staring.
i just watched the replay of that Philly 2 on 1 goal. You guys were right. Nieves abandoned his man way worse than the first goal.
Only in AVs world is DD a 4C
.
Heetle got knocked around all game
.
Butch beauty breakaway move stimied with Defenders stick across his hands when he went to stuff it in. Another noncall with this kid.
NEW POST!
