If Eichel were a Ranger, and he wanted AV and Gorton gone, I would support Eichel. Coaches come and go. Players like Eichel, not so much.

  11. DaveB Avatar
    DaveB

BDL – Coaches do come and go. So Bylsma being employed by the Sabres should not have deterred Eichel from signing an extension. The way that team was going, he probably would’ve been fired next off-season anyhow. But now Eichel looks like a problem child. If I’m an NHL coach looking for a job and Buffalo comes calling, I’m wary of this kid now.

  12. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

first, going back to last thread, Lundqvist has yet to get a coach fired.
second, and I’m not pretending to have any info, I believe all Eichel did wrong so far is NOT endorse a coach he may or may not have known was going to be fired. Kinda jumping to conclusions to say he got the coach fired, especially since the GM went too.
Maybe that owner up there deserves some blame?

  13. Norm Merton Avatar

When you let the star run the show, you find out you’re in the one-on-one isolation world of the NBA where it makes perfect sense. When you let the star run the hockey team: cancer. Completely different culture. If it’s accurate reporting (rather than the sensational variety) that Eichel gave the ultimatum, what coach is going to want that job now? A good one? A coach who loves a 20-year-old (who plays 1/3 of the game, max) and all the other players know it? Tricky business.

  14. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

or, did Eichel actually say he would not sign if Bylsma was the coach? I am asking because I honestly don’t know.

  15. Norm Merton Avatar

From what I’ve read, the ultimatum rumor originated at a Buffalo sports radio station.

  16. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

“first, going back to last thread, Lundqvist has yet to get a coach fired.”

That’s not what some people have suggested. He’s frequently been implicated as one of the mutineers.

As for Eichel, a report came out saying that he would not sign if Bylsma was still the coach. Then his denial said everything except that he would sign if Bylsma was still the coach.

  17. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

His implication as a mutineer would be incorrect.

  18. AnthonyM Avatar

The Buffalo News has started speculating as to new coach and GM of the Sabres. Outside of the obvious Dean Lombardi/Darryl Sutter combination, they manage to bring up anyone has a connection to the Sabres (Lindy Ruff, Chris Drury), a connection to Terry Pegula (Kevyn Adams, who runs an Pegula-owned hockey academy), or a connection to Jack Eichel (his B.U. coach David Quinn).

    http://buffalonews.com/2017/04/20/sabres-fire-murray-bylsma/

  19. AnthonyM Avatar

At some point an NHL team is going to be smart and hire Julien BriseBois (Tampa Bay’s Assistant GM) as an NHL GM.

  20. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

I wonder if A) the Rangers would allow Drury to go or B) if he would want to move.

  21. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

You would have to think Eichel is the front man on a bigger problem. Bylsma publicly embarrassed there other young star player ( name escapes me), you would have to think that did not go over well with the team. Guessing this is more than just Eichel.

  22. Rob Avatar
    Rob

For what it’s worth, Eichel was only coached by David Quinn for one year at BU, and I believe he was actually recruited by Jack Parker, Quinn’s predecessor, so I don’t know how close that connection is.

  23. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

I think it’s too soon for Drury. He hasn’t been doing what he’s doing long enough.

But I absolutely think they would let him go and that he actually would go.

I dont know… i feel like Richards and a bunch of other guys (including the core) were blamed for Torts being fired with less evidence. And if that was the case, at least they all had a few years in the league to back up.

  27. bobbyo Avatar
    bobbyo

Not sure that Eichel did anything wrong but pretty sure Buffalo Management mishandled timing and should have waited a few weeks before making these moves

  28. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Reading between the lines, I gather Girardi was one.

  29. Norm Merton Avatar

Wasn’t Torts his number-one mutineer? Loved the fire, but his Hagelin-sucks sort of comments, which were honest and which I suppose journalists loved, were hardly designed for longevity. Bland statements are the way to go with folks who buy ink by the ton. Or no statements at all (Belichick school).

  30. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

I will report that as soon as I know for certain, which will probably be never. But I have good reason to know who wasn’t. Some non-mutineers were fine with the change, but weren’t mutineers.

  31. Lev Avatar
    Lev

What makes you say that? I thought Torts and Girardi had a really good relationship. No one bought into the shot blocking more than Girardi.., well, maybe Callahan..

  32. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

Norm, he loved Hagelin, and vice versa. That was Torts’ way of telling the reporter(s) they were dead wrong, and it was said jokingly.

also, we’ve seen that Hagelin is hardly equipped to play the power play.

  33. Lev Avatar
    Lev

Carp said one guy is no longer here so I’m guessing it’s either Callahan, Dubinsky or Richards….

  34. cooscoos Avatar

Richie Rich excoriated Torts. Why anyone would listen to him is beyond me.

  35. AnthonyM Avatar

I wouldn’t imagine the Rangers would stand in Drury’s way. Maybe they could get the Sabres to make Eric happy and send Evander Kane as compensation 🙂

I agree it might be to soon for Drury to run a team, but if they brought in an experienced hand as President or Assistant GM it could work.

As for the Eichel/Quinn/Parker connection you have to figure Quinn doesn’t get the B.U. job if Jack Parker doesn’t sign off. Quinn, along with Jim Montgomery of the University of Denver, are two hot collegiate names being kicked around. For Eichel’s sake, it better not be Quinn or it is going to look a lot like Bylsma’s firing was Eichel’s handy work. True or not, it is a perception a player does not need.

  49. AnthonyM Avatar

Doodie – If I were Drury I wouldn’t go to Buffalo for an assistant’s job either. I meant him as the GM with an experienced hand as President who handles the administrative stuff and acts like a sounding board – kind of like Glen Sather does now 🙂 Unless Buffalo follows Toronto’s game plan and installs Drury as President (like Shanny) and brings in a veteran to be GM (like Lamoriello).

I didn’t realize that Drury is involved in the management of Team USA in the World Championships. You have to give Eichel credit for agreeing to play for the U.S. Depending on the playoffs finish up, the U.s. might have a decent team of NHL players for a change.

If my fading memory serves me correctly, Torts put the team through some very taxing workouts upon returning from the lockout which seemed to rub some vets wrong, particularly the ones that did not stay in shape…
    .
Torts was gone by the summer after getting knocked out by Bs with Cally, Richie Rich and Nash basically no shows in those playoffs with a combined 4 goals in the 12 games.

  53. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

I think the only one who nearly dropped dead in the “taxing” post-lockout workouts, if they were really taxing, was 19. Because he mailed in the entire lockout — didn’t work out, got involved with the union, then couldn’t skate that short season.

I would LOL if it was Tax Free, who was at the center of everything when Torts was here, ended up defending Torts when the Avery “fire this clown” message hit only to end up on the 3rd line with no more power play time under AV, and forced his way out of town with his contract demands.

I bet it was Bran Bole. Wasnt he playing on 4th line? Something he didnt wanna do anymore and thought that new coach (AV) will give him a different role but AV still kept him there and so Bole ran to another team thinking fresh start, new role to only end up on the 4th line anyway?

  58. AnthonyM Avatar

    I “borrowed/stole” this from Facebook:

On this date April 20, 1950

New York center Don “Bones” Raleigh set a Stanley Cup record with his second overtime goal in as many games as the Rangers downed the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in Game Five of the 1950 Final. The win proved to be the Rangers’ last of the series as Detroit went on to win the final two games and the Stanley Cup.

That was a series this Rangers team could embrace. The 1950 Rangers played their two “home games” in Toronto because of the circus and split their “home games”.

  59. AnthonyM Avatar

More hockey history – yeah?!? 🙂 The 1950 Rangers were the last team to be awarded the O’Brien Trophy. That trophy was given out for a variety of accomplishments (four in total), but from 1939 to 1950 it was given to the team that lost the Stanley Cup Final. The trophy is in possession of the Hall of Fame.

Reading some of the comments on both the Torts and Bylsma firings is why the true story should be told to the public, even if they have to “sugar coat” the story with corporate-speak. (You know like United Airlines saying Dao was “re-accommodated”)

People hear and read rumors and they even make a lot of sense, but nobody knows the truth except the team.

As for tonight’s game, I’ll probably miss the first period, but get home in time to see the rest. If the Rangers are down by more than a goal after one, I’ll need a sedative before settling down in my chair.
