The Rangers returned to the way of the six while holding a kids night at the Garden and everyone left with a smile on their face.
Chicago clearly knew not to win this game if they wanted to try to bump the Rangers out of the #2 spot in the upcoming draft. And it would have been hard for them to have done any better a job of losing.
The Hawks teased their home fans watching on TV with a late first period goal by Lardis (8) at 17:34, only to allow a deflection goal to JT Miller (15) 58 seconds later at 18:32 – Sheary (10) and Schneider (14) with the assists. One all after one.
After 15 shots on goal in the first period many would have questioned if the Rangers could keep up the pace. They did, with 16 shots and three goals. Robertson (5) began the show with a wrister from below the circle of a Miller (29) rebound at 05:24. This was followed at 08:20 by the first NHL for Sykora (1) from the slot on a nice setup by Cuylle (17), Trocheck (34) with the secondary. In case you missed the broadcast, Cuylle has been the primary assist on the first NHL goal of four Rangers this season, one off the NHL record. And then the journey man, long of the AHL, stepped up at 16:07 – Brodzinski (5) rifled one from the left circle past Soderblom to put the Rangers up 4-1 after two. Borgen (8) and Chmelař (1, first NHL) with the assists.
Lafreniere (22) continued his hot streak that followed the departure of Panarin last month with a PPG. Once again, Lafreiere put himself at the right place, right time – netfront – to tip in a shot by Fox (35) with Miller (30) getting the secondary. And finishing the scoring for the game and third period would be Brodzinski (6) getting his second of the night with a snipe from the slot through a crowd, assisted by Raddysh (10) and first NHL gamer Fortescue (1). Final 6-1 NYR.
Garand was pretty solid in net again – he made a number of key saves on break aways and stopped 27 of 28 shots he faced.
Game summary below:

The Rangers have another early afternoon home game on Sunday 29 March against the Florida Panthers at 13:00 EDT. MSG, NHLN and Scripps with the telecast.

SN I think Lafreniere has helped himself as well by finally getting his ass somewhere near the front of the net for tips or rebounds. I don’t think too many of his scoring run have been on shots from more than a few feet away.
Poor Brodude gets two goals and no star. Guess the marketing people made sure Fortescue got the last one.
IIRC from the postgame, Sully said he was trying to get Brodude the hatty at the end and I think that is when Fortescue picked up the extra couple minutes. Also ended up paired with Schneider most of the time.
Good think they didn’t sell low on Laffy ..just needed more PP time
Bobbyo
That probably wouldn’t have happened if Panarin was still around.
Beezle
Nice post game.
Panarin was not coming back next season even if they were in playoff picture and he stayed through deadline
Hard to take last nights game, and anything that happened in it seriously. There was less intensity than a preseason game.
Even though he’s doing it during play out the string time, I do think what Lafrenière is doing, is meaningful. We have see him go for 20 plus goals, and 50 plus points before. The question with Lafrenière is this, does he have more in him? The Rangers need him to have more
Laffy’s resurgence is also following the return of Fox who creates many quality chances for the forwards. Practicing w Fox has Laffy understanding where to be, the blue paint is the beacon if you get lost…
The Rangers are #24 in both GF and GA.
Zero effort by the Hawks last night, just laughable. Let’s see how they do against the devils, Canadians, and Wings.
Who looks out of place in this photo 🤔
Just a reminder, not that y’all don’t know this, but all goal scorers pad their stats against bottom feeders.
As soon as they went up 3-1, I tuned out. At this stage of the season, I have no interest in players personal stats. I can’t ask NYR to deliberately throw matches, but I can’t pretend to like these wins either.
Fun and feel good game all around. Nice to have a feather in the cap like that every now and then
Borg fighting showed the toughness in him we saw last year and was maybe missing a bit this year
Sykora and Chemlar I think are keepers !
Perrault continues to impress (which I am pleasantly surprised about after his cup o coffee last year)
Robertson is a much needed win this year, solid and still will get better
Garand is answering the question of who replaces quickie next year
I know I am supposed to be rooting to tank and I am;but you got to admit like I have said before. It’s great to see them smiling. How can you not love a kid like Sykora? I know Chicago sucks and we do not want to win but I was happy for every one of those guys last night.
Against better teams it will not be as easy, but it might be not as long of a rebuild if we can get these guys to play like this all year long. Maybe a dream but for once I am going to be optimistic. What can possibly go wrong?
Chemistry matters. Looks like kartye and miller are a duo if we are stuck keeping miller
UPDATE: Juuso Parssinen has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Don’t think we’ll be seeing him again
I don’t care what he brings to every game. I have had enough of Sheary. There is no sensible reason for him to be on the ice with 11 games left.
I believe there are only 9 games left. Don’t make it worse than it is. Sheary still shouldn’t be playing.
This season has been miserable for them. Nice to see a few smiles. Sykora had the biggest smile.
Just need a first line center number one pick like Chicago to get out of the cellar…
Too bad for Parssinen. I don’t think he played badly and he certainly brings more to the table than Sheary.
ORF
You are correct 9 games left. Still Sheary has no business on the ice. He accomplishes nothing other than a wasted roster spot. I fear he will be signed for another year.
WPG 4, COL 2
That’s a result I didn’t expect.
Flames playing Canucks. Hopefully they can win one.
CGY 7, VAN 3
Beezle probably was cheering for a 6-3 final score, but Calgary spoiled things in the last few seconds.
Need to lose and keep Florida from keeping first rounder…Buttman will reward his darlings with a lottery ball
The OHL playoffs started. Greentree, and Windsor are up 2 zip. Greentree was 3-1-4, in the two game.
Flint is also up 2 games in there series. Winning 9-1, and 11-1. Use the numbers I’m about to give you any way you like. Aspinall was 2-4-6 in the two games, and Battaglia was 3-6-9 in the two games.
Michigan’s state lost in OT yesterday, so Barnhill season is over. Almost Ranger, Charlie Stramel, blocked t shot, and broke his ankle in the game.
EJ Emery is still alive. ND won’t 5 zip to advance to the final 4. Emery was a plus 4 in the game.
Malcom Spence plays today.
Left out Ty Henricks. He also plays today.
Brody Lamb has 5 points in 6 games with the Pack. Also for those still interested in him, Othmann is up with Calgary, and had an assist in his first game.
Two other OHL playoff prospects.
Gonchar had an assist in his teams first playoff game.
Evan Passmore, who is not known for his scoring, if you know what I mean, was scoreless in 2 games. Both are Dmen.
Thanks Carey!
Speaking of Charlie Stramel ( sort of), the player everyone assumes the Rangers really wanted from the Wild, Yurov, has been a scratch the last 2 games.
Great info Carey. Bummer on that broken ankle. And only NYR could draft someone with the name “Passmore”. Thankfully both Bread and Zuc are gone 🤣
I was waiting for ORF to give us the OHL guys, he’s usually on that, but I guess he slept in.
This is my happy hockey place.
I see the nephew is still in the lineup today. I’d call Sullivan a bonehead but that’s an insult to everyone on RR 3.0.
“Greentree was 3-1-4, in the two game…”
I look forward to NYR’s Greentree going up against Blackhawks’ Boisvert.
