Rangers 4, Canadiens 3

The Rangers delighted their fans last night with a glorious 4-3 victory over Les Habitants in Montreal. Yes, that is correct – they scored f-o-u-r goals in a single game!

Joking aside, this was a game that early on looked like another L. In typical Ranger manner, they gave up a very early goal to Slafvosky (2) just 1:33 into the game when Caufield got a puck past Robertson at the offensive blue line. Borgen, though well positioned to break up the pass to the trailing Slafvosky, was unable and Slafvosky put the slapshot from the circle past quick. 1-0 MTL.

But the pain was not over. Vaakanainen quickly followed with a hooking call at 02:11 that gave MTL an early PP which they would take advantage of when Montreal Captain Suzuki (1) beat Quick at 03:42 from the left circle. 2-0 MTL and much clutching of pearls in Ranger land.

Zibanejad (2) would get the Rangers back within one with a PPG at the 11:56 mark, assisted by Fox (2) and Panarin (3). This was a classic Mika one timer; apparently he renewed his lease on Ovi’s office. 2-1 MTL and that is how period one would end.

The second period was a back and forth affair with no scoring and a repeat of the first period’s six NYR shots to eight MTL. However, the NYR had stabilized the ship and were preparing to attack. Really!

Just 00:34 into the third, JT Miller (2) would deflect a Fox shot past Montembeault to tie the game. In a very rare sighting, the Rangers had two men in front of the net and it wasn’t until video review showed the shot deflecting of Miller’s leg that the goal could be conclusively credited. Sorry Laffy!

Ah but the onslaught was only beginning. At 04:11 Robertson (1) would get his first NHL goal on a rising boomer from the blue line, Panarin (5) and Sheary (2) assisting. This was a shot that should have been stopped and you could sense some of the air escaping the Centre Bell. The dagger was delivered by Panarin (1), getting his first of the season after having missed a multitude of open nets earlier in the game. Instead he took a nice pass from Zibanejad at the top of the circle and buried a shot from the dot. In the span of under six minutes Montreal went from up 2-1 to down 4-2 and desperate.

Dobson (1) would bring the Candiens within one at 08:26 on a slapper that made it past Quick who was screened in front as Fox was manhandled by Gallagher. 4-3 NYR, nails about to get shorter.

The Rangers would endure the final 11:34, even surviving the Chinese Fireplace™, to leave Montreal with another road victory. The NHL notes this is the longest active road point streak for the team against the same opponent, 7-0-2 in their last nine in Montreal. Panarin had a big point night and he has at least one in thirteen consecutive games against Montreal going back to early 2020. This ties Gilbert and Leetch for second most against a single opponent, trailing Bathgate’s record 22 against the Bruins.

Scoring details below:

The Rangers return home for a tilt on Monday night at 19:00 EDT against the Wild, telecast by MSG, FDSNNO and FDSNWI.

Lucky for Rangers Montreal’s goalie was horrible. Glad to see PP work and Zib and Bread score goals.
Someone in Ranger management has to make a formal complaint to the NHL on the way Rempe keeps getting phantom penalty calls against him.
Last night he got crosschecked and punched and did nothing to retaliate and gets 2 minutes for roughing. Look at the replay there is nothing there. Oh well. Officiating in NHL has stunk forever. Complaining about it is never going to change it. With some luck maybe we will score a goal tomorrow. LGR

Ditto the Rempe zebra harassment. He should sue. They are stifling his budding career.

Proud of Miller for allowing LaCoast to initially get credit for a goal that was clearly not his. That’s leadership and why he’s our Capt.

Sully does scream at the officials more than most coaches. It bothered me when he was with the Pens but I like it now. They made a couple of soft calls against the Habs in Montreal, but Rempe did get a reputation matching minor and there should have been an extra 2 on the fighting calls. If you want to “protect” a teammate that should be the price. The 2+5+10 seems to have disappeared again. I thin it is still in the book.

That Robertson could never get a chance and now is second best Dman on Left side is a puzzlement.

Honest game by NYR; finishing checks, back checks, good positional D. Habs are quick but smallish in the top 6 so you have to be physical to slow them down

Sam Carrick is just all business. His fight against Habs big man was textbook study on how bigger guys have less leverage. Sam the Man!

Meeka is playing his best hockey in 2 seasons. Wish he hadn’t disappeared last season.

We were in Connecticut on Friday and went to a Bridgeport game. They are now the Islanders and were wearing the Fishsticks logo on their sweaters.

There was a Sustr playing D for them who I assume is the same guy who the Rangers had as a PTO in camp. We may see him sometime on the Island this year.

Providence Bs seem to be off to a good start. They beat the Fishsticks and Wolfpack by identical 5-2 scores. Tap the brakes on Perrault for a while. He didn’t manage a SOG last night. Wait at least until Thanksgiving and more likely New Years before bring him up.

Robertson had injuries and the Rangers were enamored with small offensive D-men (Lundquist and Jones). That pushed him down on the depth chart. I actually like that they have guys who are interested in defending playing on the back line. They can tolerate Fox getting pushed around with what he brings to the offense. But you can’t have half you need getting manhandled.

Morrow did not play for the Wolfpack last night. Is he hurt or was he a healthy scratch? Also Ryan Borque is now an assistant coach at Providence.

The pool for who will score the first Ranger goal at MSG this season is still open. I’m going with Mika.

If Rempe scores the first home goal the roof may come off 🤣

If Mika keeps playing towards the center of the ice he may make it happen. If he discos right back towards the boards away from contact on every rush, not so much.

ORF – I believe Morrow is still up with the Rangers until Soucy comes back.

It is refreshing seeing the Rangers playing a structured defense and finishing more checks than they have in the past.

Was nice to see the top 6 finally show up and pot some goals. Third and fourth lines are playing solid in their minutes, but they will need them to chip in some goals along the way as well.

Dreary traded for two Lefty Dmen (Vaak, Soucy) and an RD (Morrow) since middle of last season so definitely moved on from smaller O minded backliners after waiting far too long to do so.

I told my wife after the first two Habs goals last night…here comes the implosion. I’m so very glad that they proved me wrong and made me eat my words.
I like Robertson a lot. Very steady. And Rempe gets a raw deal on a lot of calls….as we all know. And…Rempe is going to score tge first goal at MSG this season.

    Trivia was somewhat easy

20 goals in Montreal in lifetime reg season

    Maloney guessed jt and bread

I knew it has to be long ago when they played 14 games vs opponents and knew Gilbert had a 5 goal game

    My other guess was bathgate

    That was Camille Henry though

I forgot about Morrow being called up.

In the original six days they played the Habs 14 times a year. The goals against each team mounted up quickly. Henry played his whole career in that era and Gilbert started his there too.

That Tom Wilson hit is at least an interference penalty. The puck was long gone. Chytil has the worst injury luck in the NHL. I feel bad for the young man.

Watch this one on the DVR. Aside from the first five minutes, the game continued with NYR defending well. The offense will come, I think at least, so should see more points as a result.

Epic Giants collapse today! Daboll needs to go, idiot not running on 3rd down late. People fawning over Dart, not a hater but guy was 15/33 and that includes the freak catch. All other NY teams get a pass on Monday as a result of NYG/NYJ weekend 🤣

LeCoast going more to the net lately and JT tried to encourage that and reward it by giving him a goal that wasn’t his. And Frenchie over-eager to take it. Later reversed, as it should have been. Kudos to the captain on that one.

Sully rightfully upset on the rempe penalty.

Rempe has mad the refs jobs pretty easy so far this year. Not running around and hurting people

For him to get cross checked 3 times by two people and not retaliate bite still get put in the box makes is a shameful display on hockey night in French canada

That much sweeter of a comeback

Also interesting that wifi wanted Carrick rather than Rempe but that also seemed to spur the rangers to shift the momentum as a team

The Wilson hit on Chytil was probably a tick late, but how many times is Chytil going to put himself in that position to take that kind of hit? He never learns, don’t admire your pass.

  33. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

I like Chytil. Wish it was better for him

But the way he skates through the neutral zone predisposes himself to a big blindside target

With his history he needs to have head on swivel and be more elusive

That being said. Not many in nhl besides Wilson look to make that hit anymore. Zero concern for the health and careers of fellow players. Won’t be the last career he ends

I thought the NHL was trying to legislate against those blind side hits after Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard among others. That was a legal hit a decade ago. Not so much now.

Chytil should get his stick up after every pass until a few guys take it in the neck. They would think twice about that hit the next time.

That said, making that pass he turns his body and vision to the right. It looks like he did try to brace himself for the hit, it just happened too quickly He didn’t have time. The whole thing happens in a fraction of a second.

The Giant collapse was one for the ages. That had to fail at about a dozen plays that would have changed the outcome. Missed PATs,
failed 2 pt. conversions. Allowing two 2 point conversions, throwing in the middle of the field on third down. Heads should roll after this one. Mara’s health issues may save them.
Daboll and Dart may not be a good combination. One of them has to stay cool when things get crazy. It should be the adult (coach) but he seems incapable of controlling his emotions. The D also seemed to be gassed from the middle of the third on. Was it the mile high air or no leadership to keep them more in control as things escalated? They were a Chinese fireplace for the last 20 minutes. I suspect all that will change is that there will be a new place kicker next Sunday as the Eagles seek revenge.

More Sully, who apparently skipped breakfast:

No, I think it’s such a small sample size at this point. We’re just going to take each game as it comes. We’re going to try to put our best game on the ice. I think the group should feel good about themselves with the experience that we just went through in Montreal. We acknowledge that we’ve played a lot of good hockey, we got to continue to stay hungry and not be satisfied. That’s the most important thing for me is, you know, we can’t change what’s happened in the past. All we can do is we can affect what what happens in the now, and we just got to stay in the moment. We’ll take the game right in front of us. Tonight it’s against Minnesota. I think we got to get excited about it. I think we got to stay hungry, and we got to continue to build our team game and our team identity that we think sets us up for success.
