Rangers 1, Leaves 2 (OT)

Published by

on

The Rangers dropped another winnable game last night, this time in Toronto against hte Leaves. While the continued good overall defensive play is welcome, the lack of scoring is not. Are they holding their sticks too tight? Perhaps, though they have had quite a few good chances that just don’t find the back of the net. Some have said they are not elevating the puck and making life more difficult for the goalies, others say they need to get more men netfront and make more chaos. I’ll chose all of the above.

The only Ranger goal last night came at 04:51 of the third period off a deflection of a Schneider shot by our happy Finn, Parssinen (1), who played last night in place of Brodzinski. Parssinnen certainly made the most of his 08:41 TOI. Toronto scored early in the game with a PPG by Knies (2) at 11:48 of the first.

The OT didn’t even make it a minute before the Rangers were sent to the showers. Panarin, first in the offensive zone, sent a cross ice pass to Zibanejad, who had just come on the ice for what should have been a great one-timer. Except he wiffed and was beaten to the lose puck behind him by Reilly and eventually to Matthews (4) for the winner.

Not much more to say; losing the right way is probably more correctable and longer term beneficial than winning at pond hockey and pretending you are good?

Scoring details below:

The Rangers will remain on the road and face Les Habitants, Saturday night at 19:00 EDT telecast by MSG, SNE, TVAS and CITY. Hockey Night in Oh Canada, eh? Get a two four boys!

I assume Panarin will score a goal sometime this season. Mika’s shooting is starting to remind me of Marty St. Louis’s last season with the Rangers. I hope I am wrong.
Has any team ever averaged <2.0 GF for an entire season? Sully and Drury have changed the culture. I hope it doesn't settle in as losing close, low scoring games.

Top 6 shooting percentages all below career averages… unlikely that continues…Happy with the defense against some top team no less in addition to the compete in all 3 zones. Parsnip was noticeable and used his size..probably bought himself some more ice time

Bottom 6 has to continue to forecheck, cycle and grind to keep NYR in games as new structure offers less space for free-styling (Bread, Meeka).

if nothing else, Bread may decide he doesn’t want to be a plugger on his last season of a deal and be open to moving on sooner than later.

PP has to come thru; Loafs scored on one of theirs; NYR, not so much.

They need more N/S movement on PP1 and less pass and twirl. You don’t have to be right in front of the paint but at least try to get some people inside of the circles.

The wiff was bad but I thought the snow angel worse. One was bad luck, the other a conscious decision. Fox really can’t be doing stupid things like that at this stage of his career.

I’m not suggesting anyone be a traffic cone inside the circles on the PP. Just that you need to be getting guys in and out of that area to keep the defensemen moving and provide a real opportunity to get some AV grade A’s.

Also, while happy to see the 4th line getting time and making good use of it, including Rempe on PP2, let’s not put the cart before the giant. More appropriate to put Cuylle in the netfront role. LaCoast most definitely does not like going there and keeps his stays as short as possible.

Haven’t been watching much of the games but if I had to logically figure out why the rangers struggle to score goals is because the core of the teams style isn’t a match for the north/south game. That is a big problem and not easy to fix. Last year they played pond hockey, scored a lot but gave up a lot. This year team plays good defense but doesn’t score much. Anyway you cut it, it’s another season of probably missing the playoffs.

On a very positive note. The coverage in the d zone is 100% better then last year. They actually look like a real NHL team. With all the good things we have seen from the 4th line a goal every 3 or 4 games would be nice.
Have to agree with those who have been championing Parsnips. He does make the 3rd line better. But like someone else said he smiles less then Kapo which I find amazing.
Now if power play can score it might not be a horrible season;just not great.
Last thing. How many of you when Kenny said that Toronto had not scored yet on their PP and we had not given up a goal on PK knew what was coming next.
Reminds me of when Red Light Sal would never saw the words :shutout” util last few seconds. Onward to Montreal and victory, LGR

Obviously you gotta take this kind of stat counting with a heavy grain of salt but I looked it up anyway…

The rangers #2 in NHL in High Danger Chances For and #2 in High Danger Chance For % (since you care that they’ve played 2 more games than half the league).

Who is generating all these High Danger Chances? Rempe-Carrick-Edstrom have 35% of them despite lesser ice time than the top six gang.

The salient question is: Does Panarin’s style of play fit with what the coach/gm expect the NYR style of play to be one, two, three years from now? If not, it matters not the term, dollars or if Panarin plays to recent form as he’s square peg for round hole.

    2
  35. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

I read panarin isn’t interested in a discount so at the trade deadline the smart move is to trade him. He has a NTC so find a team on the list and trade him and recoup some assets. That is what a smart organization does.

    1
  36. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Beezle, no his style of play does not fit what the new system does as I’ve said before and that goes for some other high profile players but it will be hard to trade some of them like Zbanajad. The core is not meant for this style of play, big issue.

  37. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

JT miller is the only one from the core that fits the new style of play.

I have never been a big fan of Panarin. The real problem is that there is no viable replacement for him. Rangers are in the mushy middle, so they are not getting a game changing draft pick to replace him and there is not going to be anything available on the FA market, unless Kempe doesn’t sign with Kings and wants to play at MSG, which is unlikely.

  39. wwpd Avatar

Good teams figure out how a 100 point player fits in the system ..if he doesn’t come back it’s because of the price

    3
  44. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Panarin had 1 season of a 100 points. The year when the rangers loved to play pond hockey so let’s take it easy on that front. Also, good teams don’t change a players style to fit there system. Good teams trade players that don’t fit there system and bring in players that do. Nice try bud.

  45. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Example, Florida traded for tkachuk and Bennett because they fit there north/south style of play which is the style you need to win a cup.

  46. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Last year Florida traded for marchand, why, because his style fits the panthers north/south game. You get the picture.

  47. romnyG Avatar
    romnyG

Florida made those trades because the players they traded for tkachuk and Bennett did not fit there system. That is what a good team does.

  48. tomnyG Avatar
    tomnyG

If the rangers are going to be a north/south system, panarin doesn’t fit that style. You can’t put a square in a round hole. Reason why the rangers haven’t won a cup since 94. Neil Smith traded away all his young players and brought in the players that fit the north/south style you need to win a cup. It’s not rocket science.

  49. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

The problem with the rangers is most I f there core do not fit and because of the cap these days your stuck with them. Rangers aren’t winning a cup anytime soon. I would love to be wrong but I doubt it.

    1
  50. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Cc, not saying put sheary in the top six but panarin doesn’t fit the system, neither does the core except miller. I’m interested in the rangers winning a cup again. This team is built half a@@.

    1
  51. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Panerin is basically a right handed Patrick Kane

    Didn’t he win some cups?

  52. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Laffy can be taught to be north south
    Cuylle is north south
    Trocheck
    Miller

Mika is more North south this year than ever before and a league leader in shots

The entire 3rd and fourth line is north south

So, the only east western I see are panarin and fox

I guess I disagree that this team is not a north south type team

Marchand is not north south per se either since you brought him up.
And Just because Florida has won recently, doesn’t mean they are the only ones that can.

    Recency bias?

I mean Tampa won and they had a bunch of different style players as their core.

Wasnt Detroit unstoppable for a couple year with the magician Datsyk ?

    1
  53. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Kane was a much better player and Chicago’s core was built for the north/south game so your statement makes no sense reason why Kane won cups.

    0
  54. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Hurricanes are more north south than anyone and they haven’t won anything playing that way

I think being able to adjust your game and building a balanced team is the key. Not just dreaming there were mor tckachuks available (which their aren’t)

  55. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

    Tommy. Your talking about core

Besides Kane in top 6 they had toews
    They had hossa

    They had balance. Grit. Coaching.

    What are you talking about?

  56. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

By the way, Blackhawks traded panarin off there team.

  57. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

That is what I’m talking about. That’s what you need and Kane has it more than panarin does, jeez.

  58. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Kane was in a team where the core had the grit and all the tangibles you need to win a cup.

  59. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Sorry to not jump on the bandwagon. I like north south play. But my point is, besides panarin, the team has players who can and do play that way

I think most successful teams have a mix of players

And you need to mix in some skill.

Who do you consider our core?

Like i said with the prior post. Many in our core can play that way. But a young guy like Laffy needs a coach like sully to teach him the system he wants to see him work in

  60. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Your point is your comparing Kane with panarin and Kane won cups. Doesn’t make sense.

  61. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Chicago traded panarin very early because they didn’t need two Kane’s

  62. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Cc, I agree but most of the core in this team does not. That is a big problem that because of the cap you can’t fix.

  63. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Then It’s impossible to get you off tilt

All I kept reading was north south north south Florida

I pushed back a little with specific example and all you seem to argue is you want panarin off the team

But. I see it’s not worth having any debate here.

  64. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Please use specific names of “most of the core”

    Who are you taking about?

  65. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Really, you spoke to the GM for Chicago. Kane was a lefty, panarin a right. They traded panarin because he did not fit the system.

  66. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

If they both were lefty or right I might agree with you.

  67. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Sheesh dude. It was an opinion. And panarin was so young they traded a peice like the rangers did in 94 to go on a cup run

They didn’t trade panarin in his prime.

  68. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

The lefty righty means nothing ! It was that they didn’t want or “need” two players with such similar skill sets and same size etc. they needed to balance out the type of attack they were looking for.

    I assume this.
    I don’t know this

My concern is that if they don’t have some success soon they may stop buying in to what Sully is doing and go back to pond hockey to try to generate offense. They need to get a few wins in the next few games to get some positive reinforcement for their hard work. They have ignored several coaches already and don’t have a great attention span.

Maybe he’s internalized that’s how he can contribute better now that the scoring touch is off. Stuck with him so hope he can be a guy that fits the mold even if the contract is an anchor.
