The Rangers had a home opener at MSG last night, skating with their new powder blue centenial sweaters. First order of business today is to burn them. In what can only be called a feeble effort, the NYR fell to the visiting Penguins by a final score of 3-0.
In classic Ranger play, a goal was given up in the final minute of the first period to Brazeau (1) assisted by Malkin (1). The score was a result of Lafreniere leaving his man open in front of the net in an attempt to jump the puck out of the zone, eventhough there was still a battle for possession going on a few feet away. Not a good look at all for the former number one overall – he’s played enough games not to make such a poor decision.
Perhaps it would not have mattered in the end as the Rangers never mounted any sustained pressure on the Penn’s Silovs (25 saves) and with no pressure or puck luck come no scores. Not that Pittsburgh was doing much on the ice either, which is why this was such a winnable game. The Rangers looked slow, perhaps tentative, in all aspects last night. ESPN studio commentators blamed this on ‘the new system’ put in by Sullivan but then one wonders, what were they doing at camp the past few weeks?
The last two goals, ENGs 20 seconds apart, were the icing on the cake. On the first, a bad pinch by Miller, missing the puck, allowed Malkin to scoop up the puck and move it up ice for the goal. The Rangers have not been very good at the 6-5 in recent years, often giving up additional goals almost as soon as the extra man hits the ice. That needs to stop and soon.
Scoring details below:

The Rangers will be right back at it on Thursday night at 19:00 EDT to take on the Sabres, in Buffalo, telecast by MSG.

The new system? Like you said beez…you’d think they worked that out in training camp. It’s going to be a long long season.
Drury has done a great job into turning the rangers into a crap team. Congrats Drury!!! It’s going to get ugly because Drury is Dolan’s guy. It’s going to take years before the rangers become respectable again. I now live in Florida so I watch a real hockey team, the panthers.
From Sully
“Well I think my first observation is we got a long way to go to become the team we want to become.”
Ya think?
Game 1 …Ledge full….. 2 best forwards who didn’t play much pre-season very rusty and Miller is probably still hurt.
This game looked like all of their preseason games and a lot from last year. Everything we have seen and complained about has not changed. Lack of effort, bad d-zone coverage and an overall lack of intensity. Without weeding out at least 4 or 5 players this crap will remain the same. As many of you have already said we are in for a very long season.
This might get me to watch NY Giants thursday instead of our boys in their lovely powder blue jerseys.
Oh well. LGR
Agree with BobbyO… way too early to panic.
If Miller is playing hurt the organization needs to rethink their protocols. Far more important a healthy Miller for 70 or 75 games than to bump along with an injured guy the first 20 games (assuming he manages to heal while playing).
Miller looked mighty slow…Captain trying to lead i guess
Shesterkin played good.
[DUCKS]
“We know we have a good team,” Artemi Panarin insisted. “It’s one game. We hope it [doesn’t] happen again. Try to be better next game.”
I get that Engrish is not his first language, and I’m assuming he said it without translator. But that last sentence exemplifies the play of the past year or so. Try to be better must be Better, we will be.
Didn’t know I was Yoda, did you!
Igor carries a lot of weight that he might not if he was being paid $5 or $6M per season. The loss wasn’t on him – you can’t win without scoring – but being the highest paid means that you are required to clean up the mess in aisle thirteen.
The bonus family time made it easier to cope with the disappointment of last season, Fox added. But don’t mistake his new-dad perspective for contentment.
“It can get misconstrued a little bit because he’s kind of a mellow guy, but he really wants to be great, and he wants to make the Olympic team,” Prentiss said. “I think he did what it takes this summer to get there.”
———
all about individual goals with this team; new dad, focused on Olympics because he shat the bed in 4 Nations – what about a fuggin Cup!
Igor solid was last night …not sure what else he’s supposed to do they left 3 penguins alone in crease area and turned the puck over in the slot several times
Drury has succeeded in destroying the culture of the Rangers. Tearing things down is the easy part. What takes its place in now up for grabs. Sully didn’t build the culture in Pittsburgh. Sid was the basis of the culture in Pittsburgh and already had a cup when Sully arrived.
They looked like a team that just had a lobotomy last night. JT Miller is not Sid. He isn’t the corner stone to build a team on. What’s the plan? How do they put Humpty Dumpty together again? I am not going to jump to conclusions and will keep an open mind until the Western Canada trip at the end of the month.
I suspect that none of the core and very few of the entire roster will be here when they become a contender again. I hope they prove me wrong.
The Sabres will be a test for them. They are younger and faster than the Pens and will test their defensive structure more.
As the cap goes up Igor’s salary will be less of an issue. The lack of top tier players on the roster will be the issue. Panarin is their marque player and he will be gone as soon as this year’s deadline. I don’t want to harp on it, but what is Drury’s plan?
Contract News:
Kyle Connor signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday. The contract begins next season and has an average annual value of $12 million.
Mattias Ekholm signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $4 million and begins next season.
until they move on from Bread and Meeka, there will be no change; can harp about the bottom 6 or 3rd pair but the guys making the money and getting prime TOI are the ones that need to perform.
JTM issue is Meeka on his wing and Laffy is just a freakin puzzlement. Big on the figure 8s, not so much on the hitting.
thought 2 best players on ice for NYR were not here last season; Laba and Gavrikov. D pairs look better.
Gavrikov coughed up the puck several times…Thought Schneider looked good…A Dman that can actually skate. He needs more minutes and Morrow should be up with Soucy down
I think we can agree as the consensus 1OA LaCoast is a Busto.
So here is a question: Why are the three lowest average shift times LaCoast (41s), Carrick (42s) and Borgen (42s)? For comparison – Cuylle (48s), Laba (45s), Vaka9n (52s)
Yes, LaCoast a dopey dog on last minute goal, but not a DMan in sight.
they can melt the ice in 6 mos, last home game april 8. 3 meaningless roadies after that
short season
Those jerseys look like a cheap chinese knockoff for $19.99.
Why is Morrow not up here? Out-played most and a light-year ahead of Vowels Vaakanianen.
…and Tang God K’andre and his ridiculous 7.5mil $ anchor is someone else’s problemo.
Muse inherited a Penguins roster not exactly oozing with talent, and he had them playing like a team last night. Can he sustain it? Obviously too soon to say. But that former Rangers coach interviewed with Drury, too, and Drury went with the name guy Sullivan rather than the unknown–check that, well-known in NHL circles–rising coach. Hope it was the right call, but Sullivan put out a line-up last night as feckless on paper as it was on the ice. We’ll see how “fluid” he is.
RE: Miller playing with an injury. How many times of the last number of years have the Rangers let an important player try to play with an injury. I am sure all of us have at least a dozen answers. Until they stop doing this we will be relegated to mediocrity.
Jack Eichel’s 8-year extension with #VGK carries a $13.5 million AAV: $108 million total.
No shiny toys for Drury this summer
We are blessed to have ValleyCat who never ceases to tell it like it is. Dave can be similar if Kenny and management stay off his back.
Yet another mealy-mouthed, over-rated, ineffectual BS coach with a grease pencil shoved up his crotch. Hope I’m wrong.
Maybe, in reverse fashion, they’ll start 4-12 then make the playoffs 🤷🏻♂️
Coos, it’s a cloaca
Drury’s Summer of 26 is disappearing day by day. There is no savior available to fix things. He made the mess and will have to clean it up. He won’t get to fire another coach.
drury leaving quite a mess for next gm
…right – a cloaca shoved up his crotch. 🙂
If Laba ever looks bad, he should be referred to as Cloaca
1 game in …season over… Drury gone and Sully doesn’t know how to coach
how many coaches does drury get to fire. when is it his turn.
The Eichel signing should push Dreary to extend Bread for 13.5×7 😱
obvious now they’ll never turn this team around unless Jagr returns to lead it back to respectability again
Right from earlier post Terrible, ugly, dated uniform. Grab to the ent degree
I think they will score a goal against the Sabres- and give up 5. Baby steps.
Dreary had done a horrendous job and if nobody sees that your wearing blinders. The contracts he dished out, most of his trades and some of his drafting. If Dolan doesn’t fire dreary it’s going to get even uglier.
Regarding panarin, ranger brass approached him in n the off season to see if he would take a team discount and no surprise he wasn’t interested in a team discount. The best player in the sport wants to win a cup, mcdavid and took a team discount to help his team. I never was on board from the start signing panarin. Please do not give this guy another contract. He is a regular season player, useless in the playoffs.
The cup conversation is long gone. This team needs a total reset. Trying to ad to this team will only bury this franchise deeper into the ground and it cannot be Dreary but since Dolan loves this guy ranger fans worse nightmare that we always talk about is happening. When Dolan gets involved the team turns to dog crap.
Who was talking cup this year?
Bobbyo
Panthers, Oliers, devils, Stars, Leafs.
For me, it’s all about the cup. Making the playoffs to squeak in and get knocked out in 1st round means nothing to me. Unfortunately for Dolan it means extra cash and that’s all that fat head cares about.
They are good enough to make playoffs
Sully signed a 5 year contract so don’t think Drury will be firing him and if he brings back Bread its not going to be at a higher cap hit. Really thought Eichel was gonna get to FA and represented Ranger’s target but obviously the fact that Eichel, McDavid and Kaprizov all signed extensions with their teams is all Drurys fault
Anybody wants to win a Cup on a team discount isn’t giving one to the Rangers
It’s Drury’s fault because he doesn’t have a plan and was hoping a big FA signing would bail him out. That won’t happen now and a complete rebuild is next. He has demonstrated any ability to make that work.
his plan is to remove the rot — some of that has been done ..some remains
the biggest rot is drury. is he going to remove himself. most of us see that.
you love quitters
$39 Centennial jerseys from China to toss onto the Garden ice now available
Price includes shipping!
the #Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Jack Roslovic on a one-year contract with an AAV of $1.5 million.
20 strong playoff track record. was hurt last yr. you support the softest ranger of modern era. 72. and you give drury every excuse in the book. he has left us bereft of hope for future until he’s axed to leave.
Oh. Kreider was rot? I guess Drury should have gotten a refund for the 52, 36 and 39 goals from 21-24. Or Mika’s 244 points from 21-24? Oh wait..Drury was the one who extended Mika for 8 seasons in Oct 21 🤣
you should ask them..they were the ones that mailed it in last year
being hurt does not equate to mailing it in. i don’t expect YOU to get that of course.
now who is making excuses
I think Drury is at best a marginal GM. He’s made three good moves at deadline (Vatrano, Mikkola and Copp). He might now have a couple NHL capable draft picks in the near term (Laba, Perreault). He’s on his third coach (and staff). He’s hung on to players that either did not fit what the team needed or were not progressing as expected. He’s gifted money too soon (admittedly a fault of other current GMs too).
If this team does do anything in the playoffs this year or next I think it more by luck than skill when it comes to the GM.

you seem to have started with jt miller excuses. i presume you are bundling him with drury
JT sucked the other night but he missed most of preseason after getting injured at practice
so excuses work for guys you don’t hate. got it.
Would put Laffy on PP1 just to try and jumpstart his career; take Tro and Meeka off PP1 and add Laffy and Coolio; this team needs a wake-up call
I said he sucked …have your done that about your Huggy twins?
Frustrated Fans at MSG relegated to cheering wildly for Rempe when he misses a check and rattles the boards. Sad.
stop with the huggy bs. stick to current problems. led by drury.
by the way i’m no mika apologist. just hate when “people like you” use that homophobic expression. you’re just using it to get under the skin.
and drury traded 20 another reason i want drury gone. plenty of other reasons notably all the picks drury threw away.
Clearly the team has a lot to prove to alleviate the over crowding on the ledge!
‘homophobic?’ Get a grip.
The ledge was never a second thought for me. I don’t even hate the pens that much anymore. I just know this core is done. And I doubt Drury or Sully can fix what’s broken. A complete house cleaning is needed anything short of that is “fiddling while Rome burns.”
Kreider is gone and Huggy twin just doesn’t cut it, so I’m gonna go with “Yellow Pants” or “Meeka” …maybe a vote is in order
BobbyO, Meeka is just one problem of many problems but you keep harping on one guy, getting old dude, real old.
we go round in circles!
its a cap league …everyone has problems. Meeka is the biggest though
I see the rangers losing tonight to the sabres 4-1. Yes, I predict the rangers will score a goal, progress. 😊
Sure bobby, Zbag is the biggest problem on a team with problems all over the lineup. Sometimes I think your whole gig is trolling or Zbag stole your dog, not sure yet which one. Also, you can thank dreary for the rangers cap problem with signing fox early and extending Lafrenière to a long term contract and you can add Igor to that equation but keep harping on Zbag. 👌
I think I now understand why wicky did what he did, it’s a same he left. I like the guy, was very knowledable with hockey.
meant to say, it’s a shame, can’t type for s**t.
I’m interested in the devils match up against the canes. That should be good hockey. I will leave it up to you guys to watch the ranger game.
No ledge for me. Maybe a curb. They can’t fall much further than that.
Blaming Igor? Laughable.
Igor top 3 goalie in the league but he’s overpaid. Fox still a top 10 Dman. Still think Laffy is gonna be fine if he gets some powerplay time and if you want to give the leaders on the team a pass from last year fine, I don’t
Will be surprised if we see anything more then another boring game tonight. I could be wrong but this team and this lineup does nothing to excite me. Please prove me wrong. LGR
Fox may pass, for some, as what today is called a “top 10 dman” but he is not, defensively, a top 10 dman. Take away his offense and how much are you paying him and on what pairing?
You know, if the team actually won three or four games in a row it might change the mood around here. Maybe Mollie can whisper something in their ears!

the gm is the biggest problem. by far. sam must be nostradamus and knew of drury’s reign of error. question is whose lifetime.
Sam was a pathetic Homer and rarely if ever told the truth. Nice man. Great hockey voice…but let us face undeniable factos. Ditto his partner.
‘Homer’ is the wrong word. He just rarely, if ever, found fault with anyone or any thing. Nice man. Useless as a truth promulgator.
Guess I can’t watch the game tonight? Is it on ESPN+ or some crap like that?
its on msg
