Rangers 1, Flames 2

Published by

on

The Rangers played hockey for exactly one minute thirteen seconds last night. For that is when Panarin (30) scored in the first period, the first goal of the game last night on the second shot of the game. Or as defender K’Andre Miller put it during a postgame interview: “We just didn’t show up to play. One of the biggest games of the year.”

The forwards combined for six shots in the game, three by Kreider, including the goal scored by Panarin. Those same forwards combined for sixteen shots missed, seven by Panarin.

Though there have been blowouts this season, this was likely the most embarrassing game of the season, perhaps in many years. There was no compete. There was very little of anything beyond Shesterkin standing on his head (for a change) to keep them in the game until the bitter end.

The Rangers entered the game with a tenuous hold on WC2 in the Eastern conference. They exited the night one point back of WC2 where Montreal also holds a two games in hand advantage. Behind them by two points are the NYI, CBJ and DET with 2, 2 and 1 game in hand respectively. Three points back are the not yet dead Bruins.

In the pre-game I wrote “will the team that wants two points please stand up.” Clearly, we now know that team was not the NYR, who appear not to give a hoot about making the playoffs.

The Rangers are not yet officially pronounced dead, but the vultures are circling. I’ve requested reimbursement of $1000 for my time wasted watching what the organization puts on ice claiming to be professional level hockey. If others join, perhaps we can make it a class action 😉

The official scoring summary is below:

The Rangers attempt to return to playing pro hockey on Thursday night, 19:00 EDT with a match against the Toronto Maple Leafs. MSG 2 and SNO will provide the telecast.

I found myself rooting against them last night. I don’t find the team likable anymore. The coach, and his dead puck era system, need to go. Calgary was mocking it in the 3rd period. I am a big Kreider fan, and have never understood the crap he takes from fans, but he needs to go over the summer. Can they afford to sell low on Lafrenier? I do t think they can, so he stays. If you can trade Panarin, do it. I doubt they can trade Zibanejad, but if they can, they should. Build around JT for the time being. Search for that elusive partner for Fox.

I think the first thing a new GM needs to do is get a handle on what is going on in the room, culture whatever you want to call it. It feels like some may need to be moved out, regardless of level of play. The kind of game played last night is what I expect to see from SJS or other bottom dwellers. Not a team that could better their playoff position with a win.

Alex, not sure a Kreider buyout is worth it. 3 mill, 4 mill, 1.5, and 1.5.

I hate to say it, but many of us knew this all along. They had some good runs, good looks, fabulous daves, many gorgeous sidewinder passes. But in the end since 2017 and the medal slinger draft pick, the entire organization has miserably failed! The Minx has Spoken!

Holy jeez, Carey – I agreed with every word you wrote. I was hoping they would NOT tie it because they’d get a false sense that they did something great when in reality they were terrible. They are not a likable group at all and I find myself disliking them more each game. Great quote from KAM. Great observation idiot. You were the main culprit. Please feel free to tell us why exactly that is the case not just last night but for the last three months.

Beezle, Drury tore the team down. It’s not a playoff caliber roster. This is a finish out the season roster. The team is going to built this summer, and next.

I was at MSG last night and it was much worse in person. First off, we missed Bread’s goal getting some refreshments to bring to the seats presuming any goal scored would be against the blueshirts.

The game was a big meh; no heart, no soul. Refs penalize Rempe for being Rempe leading to the quickest PP goal against in a long time.

The floaters do not have space any more so its a one and done in the ozone with no grinding wall play save for the bottom 6. Jusso was noticable; though 3rd and 4th lines were fine esp Carrick, the top 6 is just a soulless collection of players unwilling to pay the price save for Cuylle and JT.

i did not see any Dman pinch save for Fox as if they are being instructed to lay back; presume because of lack of weak side coverage from the 3rd forward.

Meeka and Miller were especially dreadful in this tilt with Lazy Laffy unnoticeable; what the heck is going on here.

Highlight of the night besides the Carnegie Deli Sandwich and Knish at the game was heading to The Canuck afterwards for some Guinness and Poutine. Hockey Bar with good eats is an A+ in my book.

    Yes, we suck again.

Carey – I guess my response would be that Drury should not be the one to fix the mess going forward. He is largely responsible for the players that have been on the team the past few seasons, their contracts, as well as the various coaching staffs. Enough is enough. New blood, new ideas needed.

Beyond embarrassing! Everybody associated with this team should donate last night’s salary to charity. My Ranger jerseys are now buried in a drawer and will not see the light of day until I can look at them without shame. Who knows how many years that will be. I only feel bad for Sam who has to put the best face on a pile of feces until April 17th.

It beggars belief that a team with the opportunity to make a playoff push would lay down like that. I really can’t understand it. They played pretty hard against the Oilers in a losing effort. Then they face a team that they should beat with that same kind of effort and they display zero effort. What an absolute disgrace.

Beezle, I get that argument. I will say this, I want to see the team that Drury has in mind. For the most part (the core of it), this has been the Gorton/JD team he inherited. I think there is a plan. I don’t think Drury is stupid. He knows what needs to be done. He started with the Trouba trade, and I think the next two summers is where he plans to build the next group.

How Zachy Jones is getting a regular turn when there are pros on the bench that can actually help the defense is beyond disturbing.

Easiest way to fix what is wrong with this team is to sit KAM and Zac and play de Haan and Scoucy. The two dynamic ‘Offensive’ Dmen are doing nothing on offense and sharting the bed on D. Enough!!!

Rangers play an interesting style, for lack of a better word, of hockey. Coming out of their own end, it’s a continuous game of hot potato with the puck. No one seems willing, or able, to carry the puck out. It’s pass to a player covered or pattycake a soft pass – push – tap to a marked player which inevitably turns into a giveaway. Especially bizarre is how many times a ranger has the puck close to leaving the D zone and instead of carrying it that extra 6 inches, instead, passes it cross ice onto a defender’s stick or backwards to a teammate with 2 forechecers surrounding him.

Then when the Rangers are cross the red line ironically enough they either east west a pass to open space no where near a teammate or into tie stuck is an opposing player. That, or they try to carry the puck into the O zone 1 on 3 and the puck, of course, is picked off.

The number of times a ranger passes the puck to no one but space where no ranger wins the battle to retrieve it or passes it straight on to an opponent is mind boggling. Am I the only one who notices this?

If we remotely think Drury is capable of fixing this mess over the summer, think again. Just gaze upon the Twerkin demands for 12 mil. Drury caved, he lacks the courage to take a stand against the inmates in the chicken game. When the inmates are running the asylum the asylum must be changed. The inmates can then be locked up elsewhere!

I would hope that Drury doesn’t do to Kreider what he did to 21 and 8

He has a no trade clause to about half the teams and as a career ranger they should be upheld

Either via a buyout where Kreider can be ufa to sign where he may want or by eating a sizable percent to accomplish a trade to an acceptable team

Obviously I’m not at all a Drury fan as gm. Actually defended him as a player

There have been so many no shows that I’m not sure how Valley picked this one out as the worst. They take a game off about once a week this season. Some time in the next few games it will happen again. It’s like Ground Hog Day. I have stopped watching the beginnings of the games and just tune in for the second period if it looks like they have showed up for it.
There is rot at the core of this group and I don’t know if Drury caused it or is just observing it. A complete change of the coaching staff is a first step but some players must go also. It seems clear that this is a long term project so the Fox and Igor contracts will be anchors. Moving on from them should be looked at before 7/1 when the NMCs lock in. Nothing should be off the table.

Arthur Staple wrote a very interesting blurb in his paywalled the Athletic article I wanted to share, because Igor gets a lot of crap from many Rangers fans

As you know, Connor Hellebuyck is currently the Vezina favorite, so let’s do a little comparison of their underlying stats (courtesy of Clear Sight Analytics).

Great games: 12 to 8 (Igor)
Quality games: 14 to 20 (CH)
Average games: 12 to 9 (Igor)
Bad games: 5 to 9 (CH)
Blown games: 8 to 7 (Igor)
Goalie Bailed Out: 0 to 8 (CH)
Stolen Win: 4 to 3 (Igor)

So basically Igor has more great games, almost half as many bad games, the same number of completely blown games, has never been bailed out of a bad start (compared to 8 times for Hellebuyck), and has similar stolen wins. The only real difference I see is that Hellebuyck plays for a much better team. Honestly, I just think some Ranger fans don’t realize what the state of goaltending is and how good they have it.

Borg has looked good. Vaka has been fine. Soucy I haven’t seen much of as I’m missing a lot of live games lately various life reasons. but still, my confidence in scouting and management is shot.

Hoping Borg is the steady toughness we got from KK and not the slow fatness we got from Brendan Smith after his new contract kicked in following a good post-deadline start with the team !

Says a lot about the team that Dreary acquire a Buch of bottom 4 or 2 Dmen and the team D got better while everyone was blaming the forwards who not without blame but not going to score a lot playing not to lose D. Might as well go full

Funny, Beez, but Bob Newhart never mentioned any mud or delivery problems at the nearby Stratford Inn. 🙂

Beginning to appreciate Molly more lately. She seems on top of things.

…just realized that this might be interpreted by some as sexual innuendo. Not so.

I sense that this team tacitly follows Kreider’s moods and reactions to Management statements and actions, good or bad. I think he’s more influential that we might imagine.

Coos there are some paved roads 😉. Just not mine – ,just shy of 2 miles and 800 ft elevation gain, would be very expensive to pave and maintain

Will Kreider ever score another powerplay goal for this team?
