Rangers 3, Wild Things 2 (OT)

Published by

Did you have a skilled and tenacious play by one of our defenders to win a game in OT on your bingo card? If so, you realized that ‘the Handyman’ actually does have some legit offensive skills. Schneider put the team on his back with a multiple move drive to the net, a backhander roofed into the top corner, to end the Rangers skid at four and put them back in playoff position contention. Its worth another look:

The game started on a good note for the Rangers when they made it out of the first two minutes, then five, without giving up a goal to the opposition. Really, its been a thing this year, hasn’t it? Neither team could gain an advantage in the first and shots were pretty even at 13-12 MIN. Jones would get his first penalty of the game at 16:39 for holding the stick but the Rangers were able to kill it off.

The second period would start well when Trocheck (18) opened the scoring at just 06:45 of the period (assists by Cuylle and KAM). At first it looked like a failed opportunity off a really nice feed from KAM but *gasp* having guys around the net usually means the chance at a rebound and that’s what Trocheck put in. 1-0 NYR. The Rangers managed to mount a decent attack in the period and outshot MIN 12-7. 1-0 NYR after two.

The third period would start with a repeat of the Winnipeg game. This time though the call against Rempe was even more flagrantly in error if that is even possible. At just 01:55 of the period, Rempe was called for a phantom interference when Shore, skating up ice to Rempe’s right, turned and skated into the big man who was moving away and not even looking near Shore. Just a horrible call and if the NYR do not complain to the league on this one they are doing the kid a large disservice. And just as in the Winnipeg game, the PK would almost kill the penalty, giving up the PPG to Johansson (6) as it expired. Game tied at two all, for a few minutes.

Brodzinski has been a bit of an enimga for the NYR this season, last night being his 35th appearance. He’s fast, can play center or wing but even with his size is not a very physical guy. A good trooper, never complains about coming out of the line-up or being moved around to different lines or positions. Many call him an AHLer … yet he does seem to have a knack for getting an important goal and last night Brodzinski (7) had perhaps a season saving goal to regain the momentum for the Rangers in a period they have become proficient at crumbling. The play began deep in their own end with first JT Miller and then Rempe pushing the puck up ice, Jones picking it up and skating it into the offensive zone before hitting Brodzinski high in the slot where he put a bullet past Gustavsson. 2-1 NYR and a career high in goals for Brodzinski at 06:38.

Alas, the Rangers never make life easy on themselves and shortly after the goal Jones would take his second penalty of the night, a high sticking double minor on Johansson at 06:58. If there was one thing Jones needed to clean up in his game at the pro-level it was to minimize stick infractions – this was not a good night in that regard. And of course, it ended badly with a PPG at 08:42 by Gaudreau (15) – ending the first minor but making the Rangers play another two minutes short handed. The Rangers would manage to kill that off and the remainder of the third saw no further scoring. 2-2 after three and on to OT.

As noted earlier, the OT goal by Schneider(5) was a beauty and came off nice plays by JT Miller and Panarin, both using their situational awareness to move the puck back to the open man. For Schneider, at least as important as the goal itself was the way he scored it. This was not an ‘oops that really went in? score. He made an elite play which should serve to build his confidence and hopefully the coaching staff’s as well.

The official scoring summary is below:

The Rangers continue their short road trip with a very important game in Columbus on Saturday night at 19:00 EDT. The broadcast will be by MSG and FDSNOH.

Soucy just 13:44 TOI. Don’t think they’ll much with the lineup after the win but wouldn’t be surprised to see de Haan get back in after next loss.

Happy for Schneider. Have like his game from the beginning;he is a keeper.
The last two games the penalty calls on Rempe were crap. We finally have a big, tough kid who is fun to root for and the Ref’s are doing everything to cut his nuts off. Hope this situation changes or he will never be more then a 4th liner.
The game itself was kind of boring with two teams not be very entertaining. 2 games over the weekend will be a big test. Whatever the outcome I am not going to go crazy over this team. Too many players just don’t seem to care.
Very happy for Johnny Bro. Scoring a goal with your family watching must be a kick for a guy who does not get a lot of ice time but gets the job done. Good for him. LGR

Those refs are not acting independently; seems like a league wide policy of reigning in the big fella. Ironically, it will only help his career in the long run but in the short term, hurt the team.

Johnny B Goode is playing much better because his defense zone coverage is much much better as evidenced by his plus/minus.

Last few seasons he was always hustling but not thinking ahead of the play and just chasing the puck around the rink. Now his spacing is very improved; kudos to him and coaching staff.

Still think he is a tweener that can produce on a middling team but can he drive play from the pivot and make others around him better. More of a shooter than a distributor.

Maybe Brodude has figured out how to stay the NHL. Is he better than Busto? Skill level, no. Heart level, head and shoulders above LaCoast. I will be thrilled if they stay out the 1 through 13 in this year’s draft, let the pens have it. Because unless Drury pulls a 50 lb rabbit out of his hat over the summer they will not be very good.

If Dolan actually cared about anything other the money concerning the Rangers he’d be on the phone to Buttman. That interference call on Remote was light years beyond laughably biased. I am convinced Hynes instructed Shore to do that to get a call.

Funny how the frownie face button is used so much

Wonder if it would be if it weren’t anonymous

I think any use of the frownie face should be followed by a post expanding the discussion about what is disagreeable

I responded to Jeff’s good post with small caveat. And want to make clear to him I was not the one who frowned.

Wwpd that is funny!! I too have thought of that. How do you “like” a post you agree with. But disagree with the unlikeable nature of the topic.

    It’s a conundrum
    A paradox if you will

The smile/frown is a paradox. It can mean you agree (or disagree) or that the comment makes you happy (or sad). I know I’ve used it both ways depending on the comment.

The anonymous nature of it is both good and perhaps not good. Good in that it means you can like or dislike without creating animosity between posters. Perhaps not so good in that human nature tends to want to know who didn’t agree or ‘who is dissing me’. Or should I say it is the bane of social media?

We could of course have none at all too.

I’ve spoken to CCCP about it once, maybe we’ll talk again over the weekend.

It would be nice to see who likes your post. As for those who don’t like your post, I have mixed thoughts. It’s good when it promotes a positive exchange , but I don’t like the name calling that sometimes occurs.

It is beginning to infuriate me that “LaCoast” (thank you Beezle) still gets to dress for any of these games. I can’t think of a player in the NHL that deserves a healthy scratch more than LaCoast. Laviolette needs to go. When there are no consequences or accountability players can dog it as much as they want, as we have seen all season.

    Remp the Ent speaks:

“I’m not changing my game, but I feel like I’m going to go be fast, be physical, go make a play,” he said. “My game has to lead with speed and physicality. … If I start going around and trying to be cautious, that’s not me. That’s not my game. The farthest thing I want to be is a big teddy bear. That’s the last thing I want to be.” (NYP)

Interference is a call they can use to go after someone they want to target. There doesn’t need to be excessive violence in the play. It’s a technical violation. It’s like cops stopping people for broken tail lights. It’s is legal but has potential for abuse. Rempe is being abused at this point. They have gotten the effect they wanted. He has reined in his game so he is no longer hurting people. They ought to let him play now and now penalize him for his size and strength.

  51. Old Ranger Fan Avatar

I hadn’t see the Rempe penalty until just now. A completely bullsh!t call. He was skating back into the zone to get to his defensive position and the wild player wasn’t looking where he was going and skated into him form the side. The Wild player created the contact. If there was interference he was the guilty party. That call isn’t made on any other player in the league. They also ignored Johnny B getting hooked in front the net on the ensuing play. Watch the f$$ing game and don’t zone in one guy every time he is on the ice.
Bettman has to call off the hounds. They have made their point. If they do it again the Rangers need to be more public about their displeasure and embarrass the league.
