The Rangers played a good, but not great, game last night against the Washington Capitals at MSG. Though they extended their lead leading penchant for giving up goals in the first two minutes of games (12), they fought back and were up 2-1 until the mid-way point of the third period. The end result was getting one point instead of the very necessary two that was sitting there for the taking.
Dubois (16) opened the scoring at 01:04 of the first period (assist to Wilson). The Rangers would tie the game at 13:37 off a nice tip deflection by Panarin (26) on a shot by Jones (Lafreniere also credited with assist). 1-1 it was after one period of play.
The fourth line played well again all night and really should be the model for the other three lines. Hard work led to another Carrick (6) goal (assists to 7of9 and the Borg) on a backhanded shot while Rempe provided interference in front by tangling up Chychrun. 2-1 NYR after two.
The third period would not go well for the Rangers, with Ovechkin (32) getting a goal on the PP (assists to Mangiapane and Frank) at 10:28. The period was essentially an effort at turtling (3 SOG) while not actually playing very good defense – they were lucky to get out of the third with the point in the bank. 2-2 after regulation.
The Rangers had a few chances early in the OT but were done in by agressive play in front of the Caps net that allowed for a two on one back the other way. While Schneider took his man (Strome), he was unable to prevent the pass to Wilson (28) at the corner of the net. Shesterkin remained committed to a Strome shot and did not cheat on a potential feed to Wilson. 3-2 WAS final in OT.

The Rangers travel to Canada for a very important tilt against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, 12:30 EST. MSG, TVAS and TSN5 will have the telecast.

I thought this was somewhat telling and perhaps Lavi has finally crossed the rubicon with Rempe:
Shift 14 3 17:36 / 2:24 18:28 / 1:32 00:52
Getting nearly a minute on ice in a tie game when you need two points against the conference leader? At the least, a strong message to a few others on the bench
Someone game thread said Laffy has to be scratched. While not not true, that horse left the barn weeks ago. Going to be hard to bench one of your ‘elite talent’ guys when you are hunting for the wildcard with 20 games left.
Mothman needs the confidence to shoot!!!
His passitis better be a blip. Passed up on two golden opportunities
JT set him up good for one. I’m sure JT will tell the youngster what to do
Feeling sorry for Bread playing with Lazy Laffy and Stone Hands Trochek. You are starting to see why Tro is on his 3rd team. Need to get his arsenn off the PP; have JT to win the draws. Can also take the Baker, Mr Turnover, DJ Meeka Bananastand off the first unit.
This is actually a perfect scenario to gauge the pups against solid competition in high stakes games.
If folks think they are going on a run with this lineup to the Cup, pass the Dutchie on the left hand side.
The reason they lost this game is on the PP; plain and simple. Be curious to see Shot Attempts to shots on goal to goals because Bread is very ineffective at getting his shot thru.
Also see why Kreider was such a difference maker in front. They stopped setting him up this season and instead, Bread is free lancing around, to no effect. Put him in OVs office on the left dot and get Meeka off the unit.
Craps are a heavy team but NYR held their own for half the game and then started to wilt as Lazy Laffy decided to play only one period and the third line is willing, but not able.
What must take place for this incompetent organization to wake up?
It’s not hyperbole to say that Kreider made the PP run. He forced teams to put someone on him in front of the net, and then play 4 on 3, or if they let him be in front of the net, and he made them pay. Toss in his puck retrieval skills. They had 5 guys on the perimeter last night. Lost every puck retrieval battle. Kreider and Fox badly missed last night.
Power play was so potent last year
With miller instead of Trocheck it should be better but missing kreids and Fox is a huge void
The “bumper” position rarely pays off. Too many forces into traffic there
With Kreider out maybe plant Cuylle or Laffy in front
Rempe!
Think Kreider missed more on PP than Fox but as Carey points out, you need to use him properly too. Cuylle and even Rempe should be considered for that netfront/obstruction role on PP units until Kreider is back. Not everyone need be an elite prancer to be on PP unit.
Doumilin fetched a 2nd rounder not gonna be easy to bring in another Dman unless Kreider
Is moved …not clear who plays with foxy when he returns …guess it’s Miller
And if Toronto is hot for a center this would be the time for the DJ to be moved
Despise Wilson, but this is the way you protect your Stars and potential Stars. Eye-opening through NHL history how many latent roses bloomed and thrived with a thorn near their side.
BobbyO, you keep saying trade Zbad, here, there and everywhere. The dude has a full no traded clause which means unless Zbad wants out of New York he is not going anywhere.
Not so very long ago, you skated in Canada, you got paid in discounted Canadian $.
Reilly Smith traded to Vegas per Larry Brooks. Now get rid of K Miller and Laffy.
Smith pockets Sharks 3rd pick. Oh and some Hartford fodder.
We were paying Smith 5 mil per. Out of control.
I doubt Drury does anything else. I mean what else realistically can he do?
Drury also retained 50%. Our GM is a genius.
Pitt retained a on smith in the original trade. I think the Rangers were charged 3.75. They retained 50% on that.
Sharks pick likely to be the first pick of the 3rd round. Best case 3rd round pick scenario.
So we eat 1.9 to get back a 3rd rounder and ahl material?
The AHL material is Brendan Brisson. Whose father is Pat Brisson. Who is the agent for Jack Eichel, among others.
Care is he likely to be nhl material or is this just an in to father?
He was a late first rounder. Had a tough time breaking in to Vagas lineup. There is upside to him.
I only mentioned his father jokingly. I doubt it means anything. Or does it?🤷♂️
Pitt retained only 25% on Smitty.
The Rangers have one retention slot left. Each gets 3.unless they trade Kreider, I think that the only move you will see them make will be as a 3rd party broker of a trade.
Didn’t we pay a 2nd rounder for smith?
beezle
we eat 1.9 prorated or whatever the real cash amt of his contract – prorated
Care Package
if a team trades a guy and retains part of his contract before july 1 would it still count as a retention spot for this year. so if kreider traded in mid june and we retain does it count as one of the 3. lindgren and smith retentions go away july 1.
If I’m reading the question correctly, if they retain on Kreider, it counts as a retention slot for the length of his contract. Lindgren and Smith go away, and Kreider would count as one, leaving 2 after July 1.
We retain almost 2 million on Smith who shouldn’t have been here in the first place.
carey
i meant if they plan to retain on kreider in mid june and we also retain to facilitate another teams trade now would we be able to retain on kreider then. or would we have to wait until july 1 when the others go away
Tommy then you bench him until he asks out ..and he may jump at Toronto
Alex, I think July 1 is the key date. They’d have to wait.
How many of us thought this is where we would be when the infamous letter dropped?
Who thought the core would quit
Who thought they would get 1OA and 2OA picks result in middle 6 forwards
So Eichel’s in play now..,
Blaming Smitty for Meeka and Kreider’s first half performance is beyond stupid.
Jamesgeau
I think Eichel was always the target
Soucy Vancouver for a 3rd
He’s signed through next year…getting bigger
I don’t see much else happening which I am fine with.
Who is Keyser Soucy? I hope they didn’t trade for Kevin Spacey.
That third round pick by way of San Jose is like a hand grenade the way it keeps getting thrown around.
Does Carson Daly make the rangers better than San Nose’s pick would have?
Soucy in Jones out Drury is speed-running the age of this roster to get to the next rebuild sooner
Jones likely gone tomorrow
Jones is as reliable as K’Andre. He’s just short.
The 3rd round pick will be early 3rd round. So in essence almost as good as a contenders second
Why would we pay that for spicy soucey?
Anyone know much about his game?
According to some dude from Buffalo media, Rangers are looking to make a trade for JJ Paterka. Realistically, what would we trade for him?
https://canucksarmy.com/news/why-carson-soucy-vancouver-canucks-top-free-agent-target-summer
Found this. Authors reasons for stumping for soucy signing.
6’5 defensive defensemen effective at suppressing zone entry’s and shots along with solid PK
Peterman scouting report
His unrelenting motor is a force multiplier in every zone. He’s hard on every puck. He’s an eager, willing combatant in board battles. He’s violent, disruptive — a real pain in the ass. He’ll make second and third efforts where other players generally relent. He’s rarely, if ever stationary, constantly scanning the ice when the puck isn’t on his stick. -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide
He led Rochester Americans with 68 pts in 70 games and worked with Pecca
6 ft 190 center
Peterka not peterman. Spellcheck ! Ha
Kreider would have to accept a trade to buffalo. Nobody says yes to that, right?
So far, big help AGAIN on the scoreboard tonight. Just need Montreal to lose to the oil.
Unpopular take- I would keep Jones and trade Fox.
J Peterman?
Peterka had a snipe tonite v Bolts; big boy
Peterka is good and return would need to be good. RW so wonder if it’s Laf unless Buffalo doesn’t want to add money. RFA after this season. Maybe Othmann and Pearrault?
Miller and Othman for Peterka and 26 Buff R2
Arthur Staple says they’re not in on Peterka, yet Renaud Lavoie and Frank Seravalli say the complete opposite….. so which is it….
Send Gil Perralt’s 165 lb son up to Buffalo
Lindgren just took a pretty solid shoulder to the head. Avs scored on the resultant PP.
Don’t see Kreider going to Buffalo …more likely Laffy
I would guess Laffy. I can’t say I’d be terribly upset. I think we’ve seen his best. I could also see something like Schneider and Othmann/Perrault. But again….. Staple says nothing’s happening on this front.
I’d say KAM now that they have Soucy and de Haan, but BUF seems to have too many left handed D. Schneider?
If the Rangers retain $2.5M for the next 7 years, they can bring Laffy’s cost to Buffalo under $5M.
The Rangers would then break the record for retained salary just set in the Seth Jones to Panthers deal. Go Rangers!
Too much money tied up at RD following Borden signing says Schneider but hoping KAM
Byram is the guy to get if they are moving KAM
So a left side of:
Soucy
Vaakanainen
deHaan
LOL
Corporal – I believe they traded a 2nd and 5th round pick to acquire Smith.
I don’t know much about Soucy, other than he has size and may play a physical game. If he has size and actually plays physical, that’s a good thing and I like that he isn’t a rental.
If he replaces Jones, who runs the PP from the point?
I would like to see Rangers hold a retention slot for Igor.
I don’t see Drury trading Laf, but its not necessarily a bad thing given his lazy play, just so they get away from him and that fat contract, but I don’t think they should retain salary.
The Colorado Avalanche acquired Brock Nelson and William Dufour from the New York Islanders for Calum Ritchie, Oliver Kylington, a conditional 2026 1st round pick, and a conditional 2028 3rd round pick
Interesting tidbit from Vince M. Soucy and Borgen skated together in Seattle.
In 2022-2023 they were paired 471.5 minutes, per moneypuck.com
Avs loading up
Busto for Peterka in a heartbeat.
Players, prospects and Picks coming our way??
Keep the culture change going- need to acquire 2way skilled toughness at the expense of prancers and dancers who cannot be located in Spring
Lafreniere to Montreal for Xhekaj, Miller to Buffalo for Peterka. Make it so Chrisy.
How about Laffy for Montreal’s ‘25R1, Anderson and Xhekaj.
Miller, Othman and Perrault to Sabres for ‘25 R2, Peterka and Couzens
Mika to Kings for LAK 25R1, LaFerrier, Edmonson
Bread-Tro-Peterka
Cuylle-Miller-LaFerrier
Kreider-Couzens-Anderson
Rempe-Carrick-Edstrom/Jusso
Schneider-Xhecaj
Borgen-Soucy
Fox-Edmondson
LAKR1, BuffR2, Mon R1
there’s that big left handed nasty defensemen the rangers got that they needed, maybe he will play with fox.
SN
😊
I doubt the Kings would do it. But it would be glorious!
Because peterka a center I could see Othman going to Buffalo as part of package
I’m not ready to sell low on Laffy
Is JJ Petwerkin not a Ranger yet?
Peterka is a winger…any big swings should be for centers or top 4 D
RW1>LD2
Xhekaj is big and nasty but he’s playing 3rd pair for a non playoff team…Miller is better
Edmondson is playing almost 21:00 TOI
X factor would play 3rd pair here as well
I think he is done until the draft. He’ll see how the new pieces fit in. I would like him to get another pick for cap space that he isn’t going to use this year.
Their biggest short problem now is the PP which is currently useless. It is a major coaching failure that they have let it stagnate to the degree it has. Try Rempe at the net front. He will do what he is told. They need to do something. It is costing them games they can’t afford to lose.
Peterka on eliteprospects was listed as w/c
But others show RW
JT miller I remember coming into league and played mostly wing for rangers until he became a top center
So who knows what other teams depth charts dictate
JTM came in as a center; AV moved him to wing w Blazed Donuts at center. Most centers can play wing but most wingers cannot play center.
Kreider played center until college
[Thomas Drance] (The Athletic Canucks Writer): Carson Soucy is a solid Dman. Inconsistent season, but there’s a reason that career years for goalies have followed him around. Great stick, reliable, decent offensively once he’s in-zone […] he’ll help the NYR.
