Rangers 2, Washington 3 (OT)

Published by

on

The Rangers played a good, but not great, game last night against the Washington Capitals at MSG. Though they extended their lead leading penchant for giving up goals in the first two minutes of games (12), they fought back and were up 2-1 until the mid-way point of the third period. The end result was getting one point instead of the very necessary two that was sitting there for the taking.

Dubois (16) opened the scoring at 01:04 of the first period (assist to Wilson). The Rangers would tie the game at 13:37 off a nice tip deflection by Panarin (26) on a shot by Jones (Lafreniere also credited with assist). 1-1 it was after one period of play.

The fourth line played well again all night and really should be the model for the other three lines. Hard work led to another Carrick (6) goal (assists to 7of9 and the Borg) on a backhanded shot while Rempe provided interference in front by tangling up Chychrun. 2-1 NYR after two.

The third period would not go well for the Rangers, with Ovechkin (32) getting a goal on the PP (assists to Mangiapane and Frank) at 10:28. The period was essentially an effort at turtling (3 SOG) while not actually playing very good defense – they were lucky to get out of the third with the point in the bank. 2-2 after regulation.

The Rangers had a few chances early in the OT but were done in by agressive play in front of the Caps net that allowed for a two on one back the other way. While Schneider took his man (Strome), he was unable to prevent the pass to Wilson (28) at the corner of the net. Shesterkin remained committed to a Strome shot and did not cheat on a potential feed to Wilson. 3-2 WAS final in OT.

The Rangers travel to Canada for a very important tilt against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, 12:30 EST. MSG, TVAS and TSN5 will have the telecast.

I thought this was somewhat telling and perhaps Lavi has finally crossed the rubicon with Rempe:

    Shift 14 3 17:36 / 2:24 18:28 / 1:32 00:52

Getting nearly a minute on ice in a tie game when you need two points against the conference leader? At the least, a strong message to a few others on the bench

Someone game thread said Laffy has to be scratched. While not not true, that horse left the barn weeks ago. Going to be hard to bench one of your ‘elite talent’ guys when you are hunting for the wildcard with 20 games left.

His passitis better be a blip. Passed up on two golden opportunities

JT set him up good for one. I’m sure JT will tell the youngster what to do

Feeling sorry for Bread playing with Lazy Laffy and Stone Hands Trochek. You are starting to see why Tro is on his 3rd team. Need to get his arsenn off the PP; have JT to win the draws. Can also take the Baker, Mr Turnover, DJ Meeka Bananastand off the first unit.

This is actually a perfect scenario to gauge the pups against solid competition in high stakes games.
If folks think they are going on a run with this lineup to the Cup, pass the Dutchie on the left hand side.

The reason they lost this game is on the PP; plain and simple. Be curious to see Shot Attempts to shots on goal to goals because Bread is very ineffective at getting his shot thru.

Also see why Kreider was such a difference maker in front. They stopped setting him up this season and instead, Bread is free lancing around, to no effect. Put him in OVs office on the left dot and get Meeka off the unit.

Craps are a heavy team but NYR held their own for half the game and then started to wilt as Lazy Laffy decided to play only one period and the third line is willing, but not able.

What must take place for this incompetent organization to wake up?

  9. Carey Wilson Avatar
    Carey Wilson

It’s not hyperbole to say that Kreider made the PP run. He forced teams to put someone on him in front of the net, and then play 4 on 3, or if they let him be in front of the net, and he made them pay. Toss in his puck retrieval skills. They had 5 guys on the perimeter last night. Lost every puck retrieval battle. Kreider and Fox badly missed last night.

Power play was so potent last year

With miller instead of Trocheck it should be better but missing kreids and Fox is a huge void

The “bumper” position rarely pays off. Too many forces into traffic there

With Kreider out maybe plant Cuylle or Laffy in front

  11. St Pete Eli Avatar

    Rempe!

  12. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Think Kreider missed more on PP than Fox but as Carey points out, you need to use him properly too. Cuylle and even Rempe should be considered for that netfront/obstruction role on PP units until Kreider is back. Not everyone need be an elite prancer to be on PP unit.

if a team trades a guy and retains part of his contract before july 1 would it still count as a retention spot for this year. so if kreider traded in mid june and we retain does it count as one of the 3. lindgren and smith retentions go away july 1.

  37. Carey Wilson Avatar
    Carey Wilson

If I’m reading the question correctly, if they retain on Kreider, it counts as a retention slot for the length of his contract. Lindgren and Smith go away, and Kreider would count as one, leaving 2 after July 1.

    Peterman scouting report

His unrelenting motor is a force multiplier in every zone. He’s hard on every puck. He’s an eager, willing combatant in board battles. He’s violent, disruptive — a real pain in the ass. He’ll make second and third efforts where other players generally relent. He’s rarely, if ever stationary, constantly scanning the ice when the puck isn’t on his stick. -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide

I think he is done until the draft. He’ll see how the new pieces fit in. I would like him to get another pick for cap space that he isn’t going to use this year.
Their biggest short problem now is the PP which is currently useless. It is a major coaching failure that they have let it stagnate to the degree it has. Try Rempe at the net front. He will do what he is told. They need to do something. It is costing them games they can’t afford to lose.
