Rangers 2, Toronto 3

Published by

on

The Rangers lost to Toronto at home last night, a game that they almost came away with two points but just couldn’t figure out Stolarz and not for lack of trying. The Rangers out shot the Leaves 35-17, including an incredible 14-4 in the first period – the inverse of recent NYR games.

Unfortunately, the Rangers started the first period by pretty much assuring a goal against in the first two minutes when Zibanejad was called for tripping Matthews at just the 18 second mark. Ekman-Larson (4) would net the PPG at 1:47, 1-0 TOR. Zibanejad (13) however did his best to make up for it, getting a tip-in of a Borgen shot at 13:08 (JT Miller also with an assist). 1-1 after one.

The torrid shooting pace slowed a bit, 9-7 NYR but the only goal was by Nylander (34), once again inside the first two minutes of the period at 00:51. 2-1 TOR after two.

The third would begin well for the Rangers with Cuylle (16) making a highlight reel short handed goal from a feed by new huggy friend Zibanejad. Sadly, the Rangers allowed Knies (22) to score less than three minutes later at 06:21, giving Toronto back the lead at 3-2. Try as they might, the Rangers were unable to get another past Stolarz to get a point and push the game into OT.

Though perhaps Shesterkin was not at his best last night, the team played at a pretty high compete level, certainly more than many games this season so far. They will win more than lose if they can duplicate the effort and be a little sharper in net.

The NYR next play on Sunday evening against the Predators, at MSG. 19:00 EST start broadcast by FDSNSO and MSG.

SN: Does Shesty want to be Henk so bad he is purposely misplaying pucks?

It really is amazing how that part of his game has inverted. Was a big strength, certainly in comparison to HL, but now a liability. Loss of the goalie whisperer?

wwpd: very much agree Laffy modeling his game on the wrong player, though to be honest I’ve always had a feeling that he is somewhat lazy, probably a result of being a notch better than everyone else as he was coming up the ranks.

JT’s problems early in his career were not quite the same, but I get the same vibe of a talent that is having a hard time growing up and taking the necessary big steps to really take advantage of their natural skills.

Friedman trolling. I do not think this would be a good deal as described. Yes, a young center with some size. Also a young center who has done pretty much zilch in 126 games with 13:23 ATOI. This would be an overpay

    Per Vince, just brainstorming?

#NYR    sending Lindgren, Vesey and D prospect Hank Kempf to COL, plus retaining 50% of Lindgren’s $4.5M AAV. Rangers receive F Juuso Parssinen, D Calvin de Haan, 2nd round pick and a 4th. Both picks in 2025 draft.

Lingren was a good Ranger, just like Girardi. Sorry to see him go: glad we did not sign him to a long term contract.
As much as we would like to see No 79 depart I do not see it happening. Maybe we can do something with Laffy to Montreal.
In all my years of watching this team I can never remember a player whose fall off from a very good season look anything like this guy.
The whole line of No. 10,13 and 16 should have their time seriously cut next game and let 22,78 and 73 play 15 minutes each. They will have a positive impact on the game and maybe motivate the most expensive player on the team to play harder.

Regarding the conditional #2 coming to the Rangers: “the better of Carolina’s or NYR pick this year.”

The Rangers 2025 #2 owned by the Avs was originally sent to Coyotes/Utah (with a 2026 #2) when the Rangers got rid of Patrik Nemeth.
In return they got Ty Emberson and lost Nemeth’s cap hit.

    At the 2024 draft, the Coyotes/Utah sent the [Rangers 2025 #2] along with a 2024 #2 (38th overall) and a 2024 #3 (71st overall) to Colorado , for Colorado’s 2024 #1 (24th overall).

    ****

Ty Emberson played a year in Hartford, was signed to an extension in July 2023, waived in September 2023 and claimed by the San Jose Sharks.

He signed a one-year extension with the Sharks, July 2024, then in August 2024 he was traded to the Oilers for Cody Ceci and a 2025 #3.

It’s sad to see Lindgren leave, but it was a necessary move. At least the retained salary is only through the end of this season. They will probably have to retain salary for Igor and Fox, if by some miracle Drury does the right thing and is able to trade them to other clueless GMs.

I’ve counted 8 or 9 players that we did not have on our team at the end of last year

Clearout sale should be interesting. Will miss Lindgren, really good Ranger. Smith, Lafreniere not so much. Kreider a lot.

I don’t think Kreider is going anywhere before Friday. Over the summer?, maybe. Right now it would be a selling low/injured move. No need to rush it.

Kreider, if healthy (big if) has real value for a contender that wants to improve its PP. And he can play at 4N tempo. But I agree he’s probably here through May.

Now with Sorokin scoring a goal;how long before our guy tries and misses just like his clearing attempt against Toronto.
If you are up by two or three goals, I am all for it. You just know our selfish goalie will try with a 1 goal lead and screw it up.
Like a lot of you I do not see Kreider moving before Friday because of his health.
Would be screaming hallelujah if they could some how move Miller.
You know over the summer just to drive us crazy they will give him a 6 year deal with obligatory “no move clause”. Oh well. LGR
