Rangers 5, Icelanders 1

Published by

on

Coach Laviolette went to Elmont, Lawn Island for a hockey game and came away with a few winning tickets – exacta-box, daily double, three shows, a place and a win in the final of the day.

Who would have thought the Lavi Line Scrambler TM would be so successful? We’re back to early January when the fourth line was carrying the team.

Vaakanainen (2) opened the scoring at 06:22 of the 1st period (assist by Smith) in what would be a career night for the young defender who would go on to also record three assists. Of course, the Rangers wouldn’t be the Rangers if they did not give up the tying goal just 1:57 later to Romanov (3).

Seemingly out of nowhere, Brodzinkski (5) also had a career night, scoring at 12:39 (assists by Schneider and Vaakanainen) to put the Rangers back up 2-1. But wait! Here he comes again to close out the period; Brodzinksi (6) (assists by Fox and Lindgren) at 19:12. 3-1 NYR after one.

The second would start a bit slowly for the Rangers until 11:21 when JT Miller (14) put another past Sorokin on a feed from behind the goal line from Zibanejdad (Vaakanainen would also get an assist). 4-1 NYR

But the fourth line (Othmann/Brodzinski/Rempe) was not done on the night, not yet. Rempe (2), muscling himself behind and in front of the net, set himself up to be in position to deflect a hard shot from Brodzinski at 16:30 (Lindgren also with an assist). 5-1 NYR after two and that would be the final as they locked things down in the third.

What to make of the scoring the past two games? Again last night, 5 goals on just 18 total shots (5,6, 7 by period). Have they gone to sharp shooter school? Or is it summer time and the beachballs are just unstoppable? At the least, they do seem to be playing a more north-south simple game.

Not all was good as the Rangers first played with five defenders and later just four as Miller (LBI) and then Fox (UBI) would leave with injuries.

Notes: This was the first three-point NHL game for both Brodzinski and Vaakanainen. J.T. Miller extended his point streak to three games (three goals, two assists) while Zibanejad extended his to four games (two goals, three assists).

The NYR next play on Friday evening against the Leaves, at MSG. 19:00 EST start broadcast by NHLN and MSG.

I wouldn’t go into panic mode yet on Miller and Fox. NYR had healthy lead, no need to try to come back during the game for sure. Fox could just have a stinger. Not sure KAM but fingers crossed just something minor.

I wonder if JT is a little shy to give Laffy you know what over his play after the whole Petterson thing. But he certainly needs it. Should be emulating JTs motor instead of auditioning for an Ice Capades revival.

Fox looks long term. The Miller injury is the one that puts them in a trade deadline bind. Can they trade Lindgren now? Depending on his value, I would still trade him. Going to have to call up 2 D men. One to play, and the other as the extra. Which means, either someone has to go on IR, or someone is waived.

It was just one game, but there was an awful lot to like about Othmann last night. Rempe played hockey, wasn’t a side show, and was very effective because of it.

Fox is shot, fans no it, even the league knows it as there was a report of a few players who said they look forward in playing against fox because he is easy to get around. Fox is slow and getting slower.

Carey look at the TOI: Rempe 11:30, Othmann 12:02, Brodzinski 13:14

If they can keep giving Othmann 12 minutes TOI, by all means keep him up with the big club. But I just don’t trust Lavi to do that and would prefer Othman get 18+ a game in Hartford than 6 or 7 here. Pretty clear he’s on the opening day roster next season no matter what.

Best leadership is role-model leadership which is why it’s important to keep moving out the high skill- little will players.
It’s really a simple game if you want to put the work in. This is as close to a top 6/bottom 6 lineup since the Torts era when it was more like top 3 bottom 9.
Interesting how the Azzdancers didn’t try any BS when down by a lot with Remper around.

Sorry I can’t give eddie Munster credit for the 4th line or very much else. 4th Lines do what they do from natural aptitude and attitude with various degrees of talent and success: charge, forecheck, hustle and muscle.

Hope Schneider is ok from that blocked shot

Urho really stepping up his game lately. Maybe some extra confidence from 4 nations tourney

Glad Borden is signed. (Good job by Drury there)

I didn’t see any play where kam got hurt. Maybe pulled a hammy or something?

Fox I think will be ok. Partial AC separation maybe but would imagine rotator cuff is ok.

Bro dude grinding. I like 👍

Rempe a posession keeping machine low to high along the boards.

Vesey playing better. A playoff contender may want him if we are selling. Otherwise he’s serviceable for us.

Mika throwing the body last two games or so. Never thought I’d see it. ?the JT effect

Our two new defensmen are doing a great job; they take shots from the blueline which Fox refuses to do. Hope the injuries are not that bad.

Any chance Drury actually watched the last three game? They should have lost all three but got lucky that two opposing goalies couldn’t stop a beach ball. Their play coupled with the injury to Fox should tell Drury to have a yard sale. Sadly, I think he will give up even more prospects/picks in the mistaken belief this team can contend.

I have cut Drury some slack up until now. My main problem with him is that he has lacked vision. He makes short term reactionary moves without have a long range plan in mind. He made a bunch of toughness moves when he took over-likely to please Dolan- and eventually reversed every one of them. He has made deadline moves that didn’t make them a better playoff team and depleted their asset base. His coaching choices have lacked any vision. They have been retreads that were mostly him just being risk averse. If he follows that pattern and buys at this deadline and then names another retread coach in the Spring (e.g. Quenneville) after they go out in the first round-at best- he will be proving he hasn’t learned anything and he should be the next person to go.

Drury thought he had a window for a cup but they were more pretender than contender and playoff hockey exposed the lack of solid 2way play on the roster that thrives during a cup run.

This franchise has proven lucky/unlucky with getting 1OA and 2OA and not getting a MacKinnon or McDavid to choose. The entire 1st round draft picks over the past decade are a mess relative to draft slot save for Schneider (TBD) and Cuylle (TBD); like both but need to see it on the ice for the next 2/3.

Can Miller, Tro, Fox, Shesty, Borgen, Schneider and Cuylle maintain the regular season success and sip from the chalice? Only with a large influx of heart and skill to offset the dancers scared of the corners on the roster.
