Rangers 4, VGK 2

Published by

on

The Rangers defeated the visiting Golden Knights at the Garden last evening and Jonathan Quick finally secured his 400th win, the most by an American born goalie. Quick is 15th on the all-time win list and can move up to 12th with only eight more victories. Congrats and glad you could do it as a Ranger!

As to the game itself, the Rangers were on their heels a bit for much of the first two periods, being outshot 29 to 16, 14-7 in the first period alone. However, they managed to avoid complete disaster in the early stages and the first goal of the game came very late in the 1st at 19:41 on a VGK PP when Eichel (17) was able to take advantage of a screen to hammer one past Quick from high in the slot. No doubt, Vegas knows how to run a power play, very impressive puck movement. 1-0 VGK after one period of play.

The Rangers would regroup between periods and had a bit more jump to start the period. The result was a quick NYR goal from Lafreniere (14) at just the 1:18 mark on a nice cross ice pass just below the blue line from Fox. All tied at one. The only other scoring of the period would come at 09:16 when Eichel (18) would get his second of the night after being waved through the blue line by a back pedaling Fox and Trocheck. The Rangers continue to be adverse to making any effort to shut down, or at least make more difficult, play through the neutral zone. 2-1 VGK after two.

At this point, many fans were starting to think about the trip home from MSG or what else was on the tele. Not unreasonable give the past few games and the play of much of the season. Tonight, though, would be different.

For unknown reasons, former Ranger and now Vegas star Howden decided to pull down Rempe for a two minute interference call, putting the NYR on the PP early in the third. Zibanejad, much maligned (with justification) this season, managed to keep the puck in the offensive zone which led to a goal, Zibanejad (10) driving to the paint to put in the loose puck off a JT Miller shot from the circle. All tied 2-2 at 05:04 of the third.

Given that the NYR were playing the second of a back to back, it was a little surprising to see them pick up speed while Vegas faltered. Third period shots would favor the Rangers 12-7 and their next goal would come at 11:33 when the other Miller (4), KAM, would put a bullet from the circle past Hill on a pass from below the goal line by Zibanejad. 3-2 NYR and looking to hold on another 8:27!

Panarin (22) would ice the game with a PPG at 18:19 (assisted by that Mika guy), putting the Rangers up 4-2, the final score of the game.

Notes: Zibanejad had one of his best games of the season. Did he cut his hair? Cuylle had to fight Nague after Cuylle laid a monster hit on Pietrangelo mid-way through the third period. The SN clip has been age limited on YouTube so had to use this one:

The scoring details from the NHL:

The Rangers next game is on Wednesday, a re-match with the Bruins, at MSG, 19:00 EST. Please note the telecast is provided by TNT, truTV, MAX, SN and TVAS but not MSG.

    From the game thread:

Norm said “Chytil got his new team a valuable point.”

And then he promptly lost it for them by flubbing the puck at the Detroit net and not even trying hard to get back down the ice. Chytil giveth, Chytil taketh away.

Someone pointed out Buch getting another assist last night and 238 pts in 267 GP for the Blues… it probably won’t happen this season but he’s closing in on 500 pts, 433 in 568 GP. Still only making 5.8 now but goes up to 8.0 the next three. Miss him.

Mr. Beezle, the point Chytil got the Canucks with his tying goal was not taken away when they failed to get the extra. But you knew this, so I’m confused by the entry. Great write-up, though, so thanks!

Well done Beezle nice write up following a victory. If Bazooka Pete is going to keep Bananajad with Miller, than the boy wonder needs to bring in a vet 3C. Brodude is not the answer. Of course that’s if the playoffs are in their sights. Honestly I did not think they would get Quick his 400th win last night.

I agree on moving the DJ I’ve been on board with that for at least 2 years. But Drury will never do it. I think he can find a checking center that serves their needs better that Brodude. Ideally if the DJ is staying I would go with this.

Beezle, you wrote, “[Chytil] promptly lost it for them,” or I wouldn’t have replied. As to Kakko’s one-timer, I wish him well, a valuable contributor to the Rangers’ recent success, but, boy, was it frustrating to see him fire it immediately rather than love the puck for a while and then shoot, as he did in NY.

In the short term, it looks as though Chytil and Kakko, no longer blocked by signed vets, may take off, and the trades could be the win-win all GM’s want.

One thing I admired about that terrific Cuylle hit was the reaction of the stud defender he hit, Pietrangelo. The guy (who had just withdrawn from Team Canada with some ailment or other) popped right up after that hit where so many others would have lain on the ice trying to draw a fiver. Now that’s old-time hockey.

Yanni Gourde age 33, is a UFA after this year.
He just had surgery for a sports hernia, expected to be out for 5-7 weeks.
He last played January 1, don’t know if it is something he’d been trying to play through.
Five weeks is right at the trade deadline, March 7.
Perhaps he ends up cheap enough to take a chance on.
If healthy, how do you like him in the 3C role (with the flexibility to play wing)?

(Back in 2019, Sidney Crosby at age 32, had sports hernia surgery, was out about 8 weeks, came back and had 30 points over last 24 games. )

    Kreider 18 pts
    Brodz 7pts

    Bobby –

There are things to like about Faksa, obviously his size stands out, but what was the one thing you kept going to with the talk of Chytil possibly being traded.
These numbers are from last year. It’s a moot point if Gourde isn’t healthy.

    Gourde
    Lg Avg Percentile
    Top Speed (mph) 22.75 22.09 77
    22+ mph bursts 3 3.5 68
    20-22 mph bursts 173 69.7 92
    18-20 mph bursts 770 315.8 98

    Faksa
    Lg Avg Percentile
    Top Speed (mph) 21.83 22.09 Below 50th
    22+ mph bursts 0 3.5 Below 50th
    20-22 mph bursts 53 69.7 50
    18-20 mph bursts 435 315.8 65

Any buyer of Gourde a the deadline would be looking at a player coming off surgery, that hasn’t played in over 2 months. The risk has got to lower the price to some extent.

Fox is horrible in his own zone, easily knocked off puck battles in his zone, skating has deteriorated and making 9.5 mil per. Between lingren, fox and miller, these 3 are horrendoeus in there own zone and in front of the goalie. IMO these 3 need to be replaced.

Lingren was a good soldier for the rangers but with his smaller built and his style of play it’s apparent watching him play his game has gone off the rails due to injuries and physical abuse. Drury needs to trade lingren at trade deadline and recoup at least a draft pick.

You’d think this was the 1960s football targeting known knee injuries the way NHL keeps injuries under wraps.

I’d say MCL or broken bone given the timeline of 10-14 weeks

Fox not having a great season but there PP would go completely down the tube without him, along with a lot of their 5 on 5 offense.

The first contract I would unload would be Igor.

St Pete unfortunately you don’t need to go all the way to the top of the standings, there are probably a dozen goalies outperforming Igor

Those fold out racks seem to work pretty well if you’re tight on space.

I was looking for some tickets to take my 10 year old daughter to her first ever live hockey game. March 3rd, against the Islanders. Couldn’t be a better game to go to introduce the little one to hockey, right? Well… $500 for two tickets at the back of the 200 section. Cheapest available. Plus parking, food, merchandise, maybe. Sigh…

hockey721 I have space but can’t bolt down (radiant heat) so need a flat footed rack. The big problem is most of these places only ship on a 60′ truck that drops a pallet at the start of your driveway. I’ve never seen a truck that large go up my road (especially in winter) and I have a 600′ driveway. So hoping I can get one seller to ship it FedEx but I think waiting until snow melts is the prudent call.

One of TB, Ottawa or Detroit will take the 3rd divisional spot, so we wouldn’t need to catch them.
We’d probably want that team to take all possible points from the other 2, as well as the other teams ahead of us.

Right now Ottawa is in 3rd ahead of TB by 2 points, but they’ve played 2 more games than TB.
Detroit is only 1 point ahead of TB, also having played 2 more games.
Good chance TB passes both once they’ve made up those 2 games.

For now, I’d say root for TB when they’re playing against any team that is ahead of us fighting for a WC.

Put another way, Detroit and Ottawa are more catchable
If we win the 2 games in hand we have on both Detroit and Ottawa, we’ll trail them by 4 and 3 points, respectively.
Right now TB leads us by 6 points having played the same number of games.

    Sens at Lightning tomorrow

I can’t see how the Rangers can pull this off. Igor is so unpredictable, and no way Quick can carry the load. My worst Minxmare is the pens getting the next Crosby in the 2026 draft with our pick. I hate the pens!
