The NYR lost to the league leading, history making Winnipeg Jets, now 15 of their first 16 and the fastest to the 15 win mark, ever.
Though the final score may not indicate it, there was improvement over recent games. The compete level was B+/A- for the most part. And it was a one goal game until mid-way through the third period. But once again, too many players made mental gaffs or just outright gambled and lost. The official giveaway stat was very generous in only giving the NYR 16, the real figure was probably close to double.
Defenders were often out of position, individually or as a pair, sometimes as a result of bad decisions by the forwards in front of them. The goalie stopped only 27 of 32 shots and at least one or two of those were saves that probably should have been made. So its best not to pin blame on just one or two for the loss, this was pretty much a team effort.
Bright spots continue to be the overall play of the third and fourth lines. Do not understand how the coaching staff only plays them about 11 and 8 minutes ES when both lines appear to be driving play far better than the top six.
The score sheet includes some former Ranger names as well.
Scheifele (8) by Morrissey (15) @00:57 of the 1st
Cuylle (5) by Schneider (4) and Chytil (5) @13:07 of the 1st

A good night for the NYR 3rd line, Scheifele and former NYR Pionk and Namestoolong. NYR also padded their likely league leading stats of goals in opening/closing minute of periods đŸ™„ On the plus side, the NYR owned the face off circles, 65-35%.

Will Drury wake up from his deep sleep if our boys in blue take a beating Thursday? Unlikely, the Vets run the sinking ship.
I’ll have two general comments:
On the defense – Miller needs to sit a few games, put Mancini in. Fox needs to be moved before the contract locks into NMC. Yes, the offense is there but the defense unfortunately is not. I’d take half the offense for better defense and push the cap savings into the forward group to make up the shortfall. I’ll wait until Lindgren has a few games without head gear but Trouba, well, not sure what you get moving him other than $4M on your books next year and some portion this. But maybe that is the way to go.
On the offense –
Laviolette has to start playing the third and fourth lines more ES minutes until such a time that the top six start producing *and* playing competent 200′ hockey.
Here are the changes I would make:
1/ Go back to Bread/Tro/Laffy
2/ Mika/Kreider/Smith (or flip the wings if Smith is ok on LW)
In a long distance past, Kreider played center. Mika clearly needs a break from that position. Perhaps this could be a way to jump start his game. Really nothing to lose by giving it a go for a stretch of games.
Minx I would hope he’d wake up to the fact that he’ll need to do something long before the deadline. Unfortunately, making a move right this moment he’d be playing a weak hand. I think the team will hit a stretch where they win a bunch of games again and Christmas shopping might not seem quite as desperate.
Eli: Have you & the Mrs recovered from Milton?
Beezle
I agree with everything you said. Busto must be on PP 1 replacing the Persian Puff. Problem is Laviolette will never do it.
Upstate
Yes we have thanks
there were rumors that teams had interest in Trouba over summer taking on full contract
like going back to original first two lines but why put Ziba on wing when he won’t go near the boards or corners?
maybe the DJ just needs a hug to get back on track
Miller needs to be back with Miller both for team sake and for trade value sake
i mean Miller and Schneider
For change sake and less responsibility
Well Twitter embeds are not working today so…. Giggles says that Brooksie will be behind the paywall going forward (along with a few others). Oh well.
I guess they’re joining the Rangers behind the pay wall.
I have quite a bit to say about last nights game, so I’m going to. So I’m going break it up in to a few posts.
Zibanejad was not good last night. There is no defending him, but I think you saw why he needs to play with Kreider. At least two of the 3 goals against would not have happened if Kreider was with Zibanejad. Panarin was leaving the zone early, so Zibanejad pass did not get to him. When Kreider is the D zone, he thinks D. He would have been there for an easy breakout. The second one, Panarin aimlessly pinched, even though he had no chance at succeeding, and he was already supposed to be covering for a Dman. Kreider is a much smarter player in the D zone. He would have backed out, and been there for Miller, who was the last man back. Zibanejad and Kreider know each others every move and thought. It’s why, like it or not, they are on the ice for a lot more goals, than against. We saw them apart, now let’s put everyone back where they belong.
the lack of effort that Fox put in on the 4-2 PP goal against was embarrassing. Was soft on the boards, and lazy getting back. There are a quite a few coaches that after an effort like that, Fox would not have seen the ice again.
Miller has been shaky, at best this season, but last night he just had the misfortune of being the only D back on a bunch of 2 on 1s. He didn’t play any of them particularly well, but to single him out last night would be misguided.
the left side of the Rangers D, needs a complete overhaul. It is too small, and lacks nasty.
Sounds like the un-cool of helmets way back when
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/nhl-reports-only-55-players-wearing-neck-guards-despite-no-shortage-of-close-calls
I think Beezle has the right thought on Zibanjead. He needs less responsibility to free him up. I think that was probably the idea behind putting him with Panarin. Make him an offensive center. I don’t think the idea of making him a RW, is a bad one, though I don’t think having him and Kreider makes much sense. Maybe this is the answer as to what to do with Zegras, if they were to trade for him. He centers Kreider and Zibanejad.
Zibananajad is the checking center …he just doesn’t know it yet…expect more pouting but maybe putting put Kreider back with will at least get him a pulse
we can single Miller out because he’s allergic to body checking… he got walked once without Jets converting ..the PP goal he had several chances to bury the forward in front of the net which would have prevented goal…the 2 on 1 snowangel goal doesnt happen if he stays on his feet
I have this sick feeling that Drury and Lavioletteski will not do much of anything. We will be having the same discussions this time next year. I’m afraid we are all going to have to wait until the core vets are gone.
they will both be out of jobs if thats the case…expect some Drury moves
Last night was winnable game if the DJ and Miller are at a minimum …average
Mika was awful last night. Something is definitely not right with him right now. Is he disinterested? Is his problem between the ears? Is he hurt? Or maybe we are just seeing the signs of early wash up? Whatever it may be his contract is looking a bit rancid right now.
Miller just doesn’t know how to play his position. You would think he would be able to learn…but perhaps that is being optimistic.
The top 2 lines have been returned to their previous orientation.
Panarin – Trocheck – Lafreniere
Kreider – Zibanejad – Smith
Breaking up the match up line has been a delzaster. yes, the kid line is playing well but they also cannot defend so they better control the puck because in the dzone they stink; esp Flip.
Lost in the disheartening result was the stellar play of Schneider; so many good plays on and away from the puck; him and Cuylle are keepers for sure.
There was barely a memorable hit registered last night. Edstrom had one; Tro had one, Kreider had one. Mrs Trouba cannot be bothered. Dude looks checked out. What a puss; get the fugg out of here you big baby.
Arena was absolutely packed; crazy how a Tuesday night out of conference game brings that many to the rink. Was lucky enough to score 4 in 120 Sec for $165/ticket; felt like I won the lottery…
Laffy used to be a up and coming power forward, now he twirls around the ozone with the Breadman and backchecks every 4th game; #sad
Sam Carrick is the man. That guy takes not prisoners; straight line to puck.
$12M man? Give me a break. Connor rifled that wicked wrister by him in stride.df
If you limit Trouba to third pair minutes maybe you tolerate him. A trade will include too much salary retention or additional assets at this point. The league knows what he is now. A buyout may be better than salary retention.
I’d only move Fox if the wheels come off-which is a distinct possibility. You could do it at the deadline and get a good return. In another month rotate some D from Hartford to see what you have. They will need to rebuild the D next year.
Get a D coach who is a shutdown guy. Too many snow angels since Housley arrived.
His value may have gone down since then.
That’s a wall I won’t pay for.
So it’s Trouba’s fault?
Last night is what they would have gotten with average goaltending in many games this year. Igor wasn’t bad, He just wasn’t a $12million goalie.
Its awful quiet in RangersReport2.0 these days. I guess we are all just as enthusiastic as the Rangers are….which is not much at all.
I hope I’m wrong but this season can go down the swirly real fast if they don’t start to play with some passion.
Someone commenting in the NY Post opened that they may be mailing it in because of the apparent mistreatment of Goodrow, Trouba and perhaps Rempe as well as the leakage of contract negotiations with Igor. Whatever the reason this may end up being a lost season.
This place has become an echo chamber of really lazy takes. It will be refreshing to see if you have something even remotely nuanced, insightful or even just objective for that matter.
Well then they need to grow up. It is a business. If they want to cry about things like this then they should be come fans, not high priced talent.
Sometimes the best defense is a good offense, at least in the case of the third line.
I concur. Guys make enough money to fill your house from top to bottom and they whine about everything. It’s not our fathers generation running things anymore.
The first goal (Scheifele), I can see where Mika -Kreider familiarity would have prevented it. Mika puts the puck up the boards in a way where Kreider would have skated through it. Panarin on the other hand nonchalantly turns away from where Mika plays the puck.

Yes, the Connor goal started with the unforced turnover by Mika, with Trouba deep in the offensive zone.
Panarin was the last Ranger to enter the zone and should have been recognized this and covered for Touba, instead he pinches, weakly I might add.
Pionk quickly saucers to Connor headed up ice with speed joined by Kupari for one of many 2 on 1’s where Miller is caught holding the bag.
While Kreider would have likely covered the point, this was not due to a chemistry issue.
https://www.nhl.com/video/wpg-nyr-connor-scores-goal-against-igor-shesterkin-6364623937112
“..the PP goal he had several chances to bury the forward in front of the net which would have prevented goal…”
Miller was battling two guys behind the net. Fox had the best chance to hit Vilardi as he went for the wrap around. He didn’t, and gave up inside position to boot. You can say Miller should have hit Vilardi, but Miller subsequently cleared the puck to the corner, at which point Vilardi is down on the ice (whether he tripped is irrelevant). I’m curious how did this play out in your crystal ball where the the big hit did occur?
We pick it up with the puck in the corner with Fox attempting to clear it.
It’s hard to tell what happens when Fox tried to send the puck up the boards but it gets by Trocheck to Pionk at the point. Trocheck followed up by yawning really hard as he reached to prevent Pionk’s pass to one of the two Jets Miller has to guard down low. Fox seemingly forgot they were shorthanded by his lack of urgency to return net front.
Now, Pionk’s pass floated to Ehlers (which Miller moves to intercept) gets plucked out of the air by Vilardi’s stick and he gains immediate control of it (sick combo of skill and luck), with Miller now out of position as the puck makes the abrupt change of direction the Jets score on the two on Oh.
I’d love to see Miller become more physical but at what point in all this was the big hit from him expected that would have prevented the goal?
https://www.nhl.com/video/wpg-nyr-vilardi-scores-ppg-against-igor-shesterkin-6364622945112
Why aren’t you half as bothered by the number of 2 on 1’s given up as you are by how they are defended?
Mancini sent down, Ruhwedel called up
Delusional!
better Mancini gets ice time if he’s not playing here
He should be playing over shuffleboard Miller.
What a clown show. Mancini should be in the lineup and Miller should be given pee wee instructions on how to play proper defense.
I’m tired of seeing guys right in front of our net and he’s buying a hot in the upper deck mezzanine. Enough already. I feel embarrassed just watching it happen.
He has Miller back with Fox, Schneider stays with Jones and Trouba with Lindy. Not crazy about Trouba/Lindy together…hope this means less minutes for them and more for the Schneider/Fox pair
Does anyone else find it odd that the other Ranger players on the ice pointed out that there was something wrong with Zbad and that is why he was led off the ice with the Referee holding the back of his pants? He was then sent to the locker room for evaluation. I would love to know what the other players saw that made them point out that something was wrong with him. I would also love to know why he was allowed back in the game. Something is not right about that and something is definitely wrong with his game. Can’t imagine it’s a concussion issue, since he avoids contact at all costs. Does he have long Covid or other medical condition? Reporters need to start asking some serious questions and those questions should have been asked last night.
Miller clearly has compromising pictures of Drury and Laviolette. That’s the only explanation for Miller dressing and Mancini being sent down. If Mancini needs more playing time, give it to him in the NHL and let Miller watch someone who uses his body and actually plays defense. Since Miller is apparently untouchable, it became a choice between Jones and Mancini. Jones has played well and has also been a good soldier over last year and a half, so Mancini is sent packing.
721’s Miller’s hairdresser.
I was wondering the same thing. I surely hope nothing serious is amiss with him. But it definitely is puzzling that he is having difficulty doing things that are seemingly second nature for him.
Rangers continually act with the mantra of “if he makes more money, he gets more playing time, regardless of the caliber of his play.”
Ev
The Rangers always pander the vets and punish the youth. It’s why they flourish at mediocrity
could they even send Miller down without him going through waivers?
Softer than a baby’s bottom
https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/nhl/rangers/2024/11/13/mika-zibanejad-ny-rangers-nhl-opens-up-about-mental-struggle/76254657007/
I don’t think they can send Miller down, however, Miller can be the 7th defenseman until he figures it out and then you don’t bring have to bring up Ruhedel.
Poor Mika not living up to his contact. Whatever his issues, physical than sit until you’re well. Diminished skill, take a lesser role, ask for a trade or retire to your DJ career. Mental, seek professional help. You are not helping your teammates.
Goodrow Hat Trick tonight should help picking up the traffic here
more like burn the place down
Carrick signing has been very good though
Again, swap him and Kreider for a few games. Winger is less pressure. Is it ideal? Of course not but it seems the situation has moved on from easy answers. What is there to lose? If it is all in Mika’s head, he needs to get his Mojo back. Score a few goals goes a long way.
This is a time when you’d like to have a guy like Goodrow, who though a winger, has played enough center to reliably step in for a period of time. Unfortunately Carrick is to slow to skate with Mika and Kreider (though Smith is not exactly a speedster either but makes up for it in other ways)
Carrick has been good but his usage is not as flexible as was Goodrow. Coach could move Goodrow around and not worry about it too much. Carrick at best might go 3C in a pinch.
Even Lingren only got a one year deal this past summer. All his physicality and grit and injuries and he is rewarded with a one year contract. If you are a Miller, are you really going to toughen up your physical game and risk more frequent injuries when you see your teammate doing that and he barely gets another contract?
Its not only about Millers lack of physicality. He doesn’t know how to play the position. He is almost always somewhere other than he should be usually leaving him having to catch up with an attacking opponent. Not good.
Goodrow hat trick……that would be typical of what happens to the Rangers.
I know I wasn’t nearly as excited coming into this season as I usually am. First ten games or so has borne that out. Just seems like a mess everywhere other than maybe the third and fourth line. Tinkering with the lineup just hasn’t seemed to work. Feel like we’ve watched yet another great career wasted on a cupless team (Kreider). If they stay as is, they are a second-round exit at best.
Admiral Numnutz, again, with nothing ….
721 – Depart and report on things more within your bailiwick – chinese checkers or figure skating. Eschew male ice hockey.
Mkh has a point about Zib. What the hell was the problem. He was escorted off the ice and looked like crap. With the Rangers bad history with injury problems I am concerned for the players health. It could have been something simple like a virus or dehydration,or it could be something serious. The way things go in the NHL; he could die on the ice and the next day a press release would say ” Serious upper body injury” Hope he is OK and somehow gets his stuff together. This being the Rangers you know that won’t happen and we will be seeing him for 4 more years.
LGR
I just watched the video. Miller had the opportunity to hit #13 as he went from behind the net to try the wrap around. Instead of using both his stick *AND* body, Miller just poked with his stick and accomplished nothing.
As the play continues, Miller is in space unable to decide whether to take #13 or #27 and he should know by now to pick one and let the goalie have the other.
It is clear from watching that Miller attempted to play the puck rather than the man (#13) which is why his body was extended towards #27 and unable to turn and come back to make a play on #13. In fact, he should have been all over #13 physically the moment the puck got to him so there would be no shot – but again, he played the puck not the man.
Can moan about not getting the puck out of the zone – impossible to tell if Trocheck actually made a play on the puck (and failed to know where Pionk was) or if he misplayed it and it went right to Pionk. End of day though, defenders are paid to defend and that includes cleaning up aisle two after mistakes by others. And I’d say I could probably find countless examples of Miller being unable to clear pucks as well, often cleaned up by others including the forwards.
Once thought Miller should be a Forward rather than a DMan, but now see clearly he can’t be either.
you guys know when Miller is finally traded he will either become Zedeno Charra or a very good stay at home d man like Marc Stall.
Whether he could have/ should have hit #13 Vilardi is irrelevant to my point.
Bobby said it would have prevented the goal.
The puck was subsequently sent to to corner where Fox had the puck with a chance to clear it.
“As the play continues, Miller is in space unable to decide whether to take #13 or #27 and he should know by now to pick one and let the goalie have the other.
“…Miller attempted to play the puck rather than the man (#13) which is why his body was extended towards #27”
That’s just silly. #13 came out of the corner while Miller was in the slot. Pionk’s flip in was headed towards #27, maybe even more so towards Miller, who would have likely intercepted it, #13 Vilardi fully extends his stick and plucks it out of the air.
24 second mark shows Pionk view from the point when Fox attempts to clear. Trocheck had no shot at the puck but could have done better contesting Pionk.
Miller was faced with 4 separate 2 on 1’s against the Jets. Did he have a good day, hell no, but the amount of blame placed on him without calling out the mistakes of others is f’n ridiculous.
https://www.nhl.com/video/wpg-nyr-vilardi-scores-ppg-against-igor-shesterkin-6364622945112
Second Scheifele as the Jets enter the zone. Rangers out man them 5 to 3.
Laffy skates himself out of the play, Panarin doing his thing.
Miller left with another 2 on1. You can argue he should have taken the pass (Schiefele) and left DeMelo for Shesty. If he does DeMelo scores easily IMO.
That is what we are paying our future $12M goalie to stop. If he is unable to do so, well better to find out now.
Wow NYR are -440. Bad sign, too much pressure for Mika. Heck I think NYG were like -300 when the Pats were going for undefeated season.
Honestly it really doesn’t matter if Zibanejad pulls himself together. He will still be a cotton ball on skates in the playoffs, if they get there.
By the way I never was on board with Laviolette for HC. I preferred Knoblauch or Carbery.
The go-time is scheduled for 6:50 PM. Don’t be late, call 976-WAKE
I was pulling for Knoblauch. Not so much that I had major issues with Lavi, I’m just over re-treads. New blood, new ideas, all that.
The issue fir me with re-treads is more often than not the favor the vets. Even if they are stinking the rink up.
So the defensive pairings tonight are Charmin, Quilted Northern and pile of leaves đŸ¤£
first. Love it.
forget that.
Last!
