Yawn. Yawn.

Remaining dates of note: None

Perhaps the photo of pond hockey from days when winter was cold enough to freeze fresh water will serve to cool people off the rest of August. Also inspiration for use of your flooded back yard!

Hey guys been a while. I hope everyone is well having a happy healthy and safe summer.

I wonder if the Rangers should take a flyer on DeAngelo and sign him to a PTO. Can’t hurt. The guy has talent…..brains?…..well๐Ÿคท

Rich surprised to learn through your comment that Tony is still unsigned actually. On paper I sure as shooting like him a year at league minimum better than 30yo Brady Skjkjkjgk for 7×7. The GMs seem to agree he does not belong back on nhl ice though.

I agree Tony D by his immaturity and acting out has truly damaged his own career but seems to me from the recent interview he did he is owning up to his faults. As far as I know he hasn’t killed anyone so can it truly hurt to give him a PTO to see what gives? It’s just a thought. Smarter people than I have seen fit to ignore him so he’s probably on his way to Russia. I can’t conceive of anything that might go amiss over there.

If there was an NHL all-d*ckhead team Beverley would probably be its power play QB…
Closer to training camp time someone will sign him on a PTO or for a year but it won’t be anyone he’s played for before or the Avalanche.

The Filthy friend has a brother in NC. Guy could not wait for TDA to go, “terrible at defense”. He’ll be 29 at the start of the season and still is not good at his listed position.

If I’m a good team any extra offense he might provide (probably on PP) is offset by the need to play him as a 3rd pair. If I’m a bad team, why do I want to waste a spot on an old guy that isn’t good at his position when I can play a kid for less money and have some future upside?

I am so sad to see the Sam era end and I will relish in every game he calls this year

the NHL should allow him to call every playoff game the rangers are in as well

this will be sad like seeing Rick Jeanneret leave the Sabres

    or rizzuto/mercer leave the Yankees

    vin scully

    etc

there are few times where voices become ubiquitous with a teams history and Sam is a legend

I find it crazy that GMs think the Tony D’s or Kevin Shattenkirks of the world can be helpful to there teams. None of these guys can actually play defense and there offensive skills are limited. But every year you see these guys on the 5th or 6th pairing somewhere. It just shows you how diluted the NHL game has become.

The sad thing about Shattenkirk is he has his name on the Stanley cup and old Rangers like Gilbert,Park and Ratelle don’t. Go figure.

About 1 month till training camp opens.

As Ranger fans we have seen throwing money at the wrong players gets you nowhere. It looks like we will go through another season of pretty good hockey only to come up short in the playoffs’. my firm belief is as an organization you don’t give away negotiating leverage. give Laffy a fair contract for where he is at careerwise. If another team wants to offer sheet him with a big contract, match it or take the picks. The league is just hurting itself long term with these early mega-awards.

  93. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I couldn’t agree more. Bettman and ownership shutdown the league multiple times to establish the rules and give them leverage over players early in their careers. Owners than unilaterally ignore the rules and give players above market contracts which then establish the basis for future negotiations and arbitration. The net effect is every teams is pushed against the cap and no one can hold on to.players to build a great team.

  94. Used to be Avatar
    Used to be

Beezle, what do you consider a fair contract? BTW, what these teams are doing handing out the big contracts when the players are young, is smart. Pay for the prime years. Pay them for what they are going to do, not for what they already did.

  95. St Pete Eli Avatar
    St Pete Eli

    ORF

That is exactly what Buttman wants.

  96. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

UTB – a reasonable bump to 4M, maybe 4.5. Have to disagree on paying for ‘prime years’ when so many of these contracts are being given to guys (kids?) 19-23 on expectation that one good season, or even an upward trend, becomes 8 years of “elite” play. Seattle now on hook for 7.1M cap hit for a 21/22 yr old who scored 15 in 77 games last season for the next 7. Hope it works out for them.

To me the prime years are the 26-32 period, which is when most would become UFAs. Obviously the Crosby/McDavid type exceptions. Certainly the evaluation should be a lot clearer age 24/25, the last RFA contract, at which time a team should consider if effectively buying out those last two seasons to lock-in 4 to 6 on the UFA side is the right move for the team, and not just narrowly at the one position in question.

And as previously, if some does come in with a big offer, OK then you decide if you really want to pony up the coin but why force your own hand early?

  97. Used to be Avatar
    Used to be

respectfully Beezle, thatโ€™s a bad way to do business. Developing a player for another team to benefit, is not a strategy I can get on board with. For every Chris Kreider contract, there are 10 Mika Zibanejad contracts. Pay for their prime years. You may have to buy a year or two early to do it, but you get the payoff long term.

  100. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

I don’t think its developing a player for another team to benefit. You have leverage until they are a UFA, use it. If the kid really is a star and someone puts up an offer sheet then you can match it, otherwise wait until the last RFA contract to decide if they are worth extending for big money. If you give a 24 or 25yr old a six or even eight year extension, you’ll still be working in their prime years, certainly until age 30. Just don’t do a Mika NMC for the entire term. I generally am not in favor of big money and term for the 28-30 yr old contingent as the back end is too problematic.

  101. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

It seems like owners want to pay them more in hopes that it makes them a player worth what they are paying them rather than the other way around. Paying Eichel what Edmonton paid McDavid didn’t make him as good a player. The cap was supposed to stop owners from doing stupid things, but they keep on doing them.

  102. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I didn’t think the Oilers wouldn’t match. I guess and 2nd and a 3rd is a good as they thought they could do.

  103. wwpd Avatar

I assume the owners are largely clueless and it’s not the GMs money so what do they care + being a good businessman never seemed a prereq for that job.

  104. cooscoos Avatar

Sather in Edmonton: “If I had NY’s money to work with, I’d win every year.” LOL.

  105. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

Back when, the Yankees payroll was well under 1 mil per year TOTAL and the owners said they were minimally profitable. The lying hasn’t stopped and one day it will all come out.

  106. Evrockriser Avatar

ORF, Edmonton also got a 5th round D prospect and a 3rd round pick in 2028. Bowman said he wouldn’t match if St. Louis sent him that.

  107. Evrockriser Avatar

Also, anyone that doesn’t think another team would pay 13 million a year for Shesterkin doesn’t remember the almost-cautionary tale of Sergei Bobrovsky, a goalie who got 10 million clams for 8 years back in 2019. That was 5 years ago. 13 won’t deter any team now, that has the money and needs a goalie, from trying to sign a more recent Vezina trophy winner who is considered the best or second best goalie in the entire league at the moment. Bob wasn’t even near that precipice when the Panthers signed him for the following 8 seasons.

And, even though it took him 5 seasons, Bobrovsky eventually lifted the cup so the usual excuse for not signing Igor for that much doesn’t work as well as it used to.

  108. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

EV I don’t think anyone would be off the wall shocked if Igor got 13 as a UFA somewhere else. End of day more cups are won by goalies who are not the highest paid in the league.

Let me ask you and anyone else who feels like responding:

What % of the cap should go to each line, defensive pairing, goal and spare parts? A range is fine but try to make the mid point total 100%.

    1st pair 15%, 2nd Pair 12%, 3rd Pair 5% Total 32%

    Goalie 11%

    Spares 4% (Only 2)

I think that adds to 100%

  113. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

ORF – very similar to yours but a little less for goalies and spares, a little more for top two and 3rd pair

    line 1: 22% line 2: 17% line 3: 12% line 4: 5% total: 56% ($49.3M)

    pair 1: 15% pair 2: 11% pair 3: 6%: total 32% ($28.2M)

    goalies: 10% ($8.8M)

    spares: 2% ($1.8M)

(dollar figures rounded, cap is $88M)

Clearly having some skilled kids with early contracts can give more flexibility which is why its important to still have a pipeline coming up.

It’s scary how close the numbers are. No rocket science involved. I went a little heavier on goal to give them a chance on signing Igor. It probably give them $8.5 for him. We should compare our numbers to where they actually are. Another thing to look would be how many dollars per minute of ice time they are spending.

  116. Evrockriser Avatar

i think the numbers depend on what players are actually on your team.

Are you going to pay the same percentage of the cap for San Jose’s first line as you would for ours?

i just checked and was surprised to find that he’s actually played in 3 NHL games. 2 games this past season and 1 the season prior. Still shouldn’t command a first. Drury probably would’ve done the same thing in the same situation though. That’s likely a reason not to.

I had a frightening situation similar to this on Saturday on rt 100. Eventhough there is a bike lane, an out of stater decided it would be “safer” to pass a couple bikes by going completely in the northbound lane (my side) at most a 1/10 mile head of me. I was quite prepared to ditch in the field after going as far in the bike/shoulder area as I could. Luckily the as*hat pulled back in to his own lane in time. Mind you, this is a 50 mph road, one travel lane in each direction.

FYI – In Vermont it is legal to pass on double yellow but is at your own risk with all responsibility for anything that happens. Expect the unexpected.

I could never understand why people who drive drunk and kill are treated so leniently. First of all they have shown a complete disregard for their fellow humans by getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking. Then an innocent person is killed. I don’t care that ” they didn’t mean to”or “they are sorry”.

They have destroyed a number of lives. 15 to 20 years in prison seems like a slap on the wrist to me,and I know almost no one gets that kind of time.

you have to wonder if the Rangers are going to be able to fit Shesterkin, Lafrenier, and Miller contracts under the cap next year, without tearing the team apart to do it. There is zero chance they can afford Trouba in 25/26. Heโ€™s gone. Regardless of the kind of season Kakko has, heโ€™s gone. But do the cuts run deeper? Do they move Kreider? Lindgren is probably playing his last season as a ranger. Maybe you keep two of the three? Choose 2 of Shesterkin, Lafrenier, and Miller. I know most would keep Lafrenier and Shesterkin, and move on from Miller. I wonโ€™t argue that, but I would choose Miller, and Lafrenier.

If Shesty only wants crazy money, let him walk. If Kakko manages to have a great year, they should keep him. Hank’s $8.5M contract was 12.3% of cap. His $6.9M contract was 12.1% of cap. According to Puckpedia, carey price (13.2%) is the only goalie to sign a contract that was >12.5% of cap (Bob at 12.3%).

what’s the right # for Igor? assuming $92.5M cap next year the rangers should keep it $10M or under. 11% cap might be doable but Drury will need that money elsewhere on the ice. Hellebuyck’s extension was 9.7% of cap and what’s Igor got that he hasn’t got besides one less Vezina trophy?

Love for Kakko to break out and have that problem on Drury’s hands on what his actual market value is. To note, unlike every other top picks on struggling franchises; Laffy, Kakko and Flip have gotten zero prime PP time which has both hindered their productions and kept them more affordable.

Dreary playing 3D chess with the Cap implications for roster management.

Look at Draisaitl; has 201 ES goals over 11 seasons; not exactly worth $12M per esp with McJesus setting him up.
