Florida Panthers v. Edmonton Oilers
24 June 2024 8:00 PM EDT
Amerant Bank Arena
TV ABC, ESPN+, SN, TVAS, CBC
Panthers had a chance to close out the Oilers on the road and at home and on the road and…
Former Wolfpack coach Knoblauch has led the Oilers out of a deep early season hole and now out of an even deeper 3-0 SCF hole. Perhaps he is one of those spelunkers in the off-season? One more win and he can definitely give the finger to those who did not even consider him for coach of the year.
This is not your daddy’s Oiler’s team. Heck, it isn’t even the oilcans of a year ago. They actually have grit and resilience to go with a boatload of top line talent. They have a 25 year old 3rd round goalie with a $2.6M cap hit standing on his head.
But every game is a different game and momentum does not always carry over. True, the Panthers look tired and frustrated and while Bob has not been to blame for all the goals, he has come down to earth again as well. For the health of their coach, the Panthers need to win on Monday. Maurice looks like he has some serious blood pressure issues!
If the Panthers lose, they will forever have to deal with some type of “1942” chant as fans everywhere remind them of the last time a team blew a 3-0 lead in the SCF. If the Oilers lose, get ready for a summer of Canafires, eh, as hockey fans up there will torch anything in sight.
ESPN remains a dreadful watch. If you can find it, get the SportsNet feed.

Did Knaublauch ever get over hitting Olbermann’s mother in the head with the baseball? Too bad it wasn’t Olbermann himself.

What a hoot if Knobby & his boys pull this off. Was pulling for him to be GG’s replacement. And so it goes.
For the first time in more than three decades, an NHL team will have a Jewish coach.
On Thursday, Ryan Warsofsky was named head coach of the San Jose Sharks after previously serving as an assistant coach with the team. At 36, he is also the youngest coach in the 32-team league and faces a key decision early in his tenure: The Sharks, who had the worst record in the NHL last season, have the top pick in next week’s NHL draft.

“This is an exciting time for myself, my family and the Sharks organization to move forward,” Warsofsky said in an emotional introductory press conference Monday afternoon.
Warsofsky’s promotion adds onto the growing Jewish presence in the league, whose postseason is crescendoing to a close this week as the Edmonton Oilers face the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals. There were at least 15 Jewish players on the ice this season — from the Oilers’ winger Zach Hyman to brothers Jack, Luke and Quinn Hughes to the Sharks’ own center, Luke Kunin.

LET MY PEOPLE COACH!
will Panthers turn off the AC Monday to slow things up ?
Who was it who nefariously watered down the field in the NFL playoff game to slow down their opponent?
Anyone see film of June playoff game stoppages for players to skate in circles to get rid of the fog?
I think Barkov wins MVP Monday night
Keep Schneider, jettison Miller.
When’s the next game, Buttman, August?
Oilers in 7.
🙂

C3
🤣🤣🤣
I’m betting all my money on the Oilers. Hopefully, I won’t have to jump outta the window after the game 7.
Buttman unilaterally extends Playoff finals to LABOR DAY. Best of 25 takes home the Cup . Dolan offloads 200,000 unsold frozen Roast Beef sandwiches at wholesale to Oilers, Panthers Mgmts.
See film of it Coos? I remember watching it live on tv as it happened. Although I have to admit my memory of it is getting a little “foggy”.
Eddie J. – was it Miami/Shula?
Sorry – I meant the hose-soaked field, not the fog.
I think bad ice is actually to the Oilers advantage. Harder to skate but the Panthers look like the more tired team.
Thr Giants watered down the basepaths to slow down Maury Wills in 1962. It’s the home field advantage.
Are the Panthers going to dump all their top guys if they lose? That would be 2 consecutive Finals losses.
Igor will be looking for Bobo money adjusted for the cap increase. If $11×7 doesn’t work for him Druty needs to have a plan other than letting Igor walk. Moving Igor for cap flexibility when they think they are a cup contender will not be well received.
Nice read from Larry Brooks about Stanley Cup winning goalies and their cheap salaries last couple of years. As much as we love Igor you cannot pay him north of 10 million. It would be crazy. That being said;we should have a pool right after the end of the game Monday. Each one of us gives his prediction on what amount of money and length of Igor next contract.
As I said earlier. It will be crazy.
Panthers cannot afford to keep everyone so no way the whole crew returns esp Reinhardt who will command big $$, though folks see what he does when Barkov is not getting him the puck, as in, not much.
I would trade Igor (ducks) There is no number over $7M x 4 he should get. Is he very good, yes. Does a team need a very good goalie to make the finals; no. More importantly, completely messes up the TEAM cap situation. He can trade Fox with him if you want to win a Cup. Worthless Norris be damned.
Jones MAY be able to do what Fox does if given the chance. Foxes health will always be a ? moving forward.
SN agreed, paying Twerkin over $7M is just lame.
Oh. and just in case anyone has forgotten, trade Miller at the draft!
really don’t see a scenario where drury doesn’t give igor a new deal and it will be north of $10m/yr unless igor is feeling generous
I have nothing good to say if Drury gives Twerkin north of $10M.
If 7×4 is his ceiling start shopping him. Sorokin got 8.25×8. Igor isn’t taking less.
Jones may be able to do what Fox does if given the chance 😂😂😂😂.
What’s the plan for replacing him.Who are the UFA goalies? They are UFAs for a reason. Stolarz, Samsonov, Rittich or do you roll the dice with Quick and Garand?
Igor picked the right time to play his best hockey. 11×7 will be a home town discount now.
ORF, you get a goalie back in the deal. Ideally you send him out west, but the two teams I can think of that need a goalie are in the east. Toronto and Ottawa.
Utb
Did I say he would be as good as Fox? No. I said if given the chance he could do what Fox does. Play defense and the point on the PP. I am convinced Fox will never be the same player he was when he won the Noris. Trade Igor to the Ducks for Dostal or Gibson, Terry and a 2nd rd pick.
If he’s lucky, Drury has maybe 2-3 seasons left as GM unless he wins a cup beforehand. To that end, trading his only real hope (at the moment) of winning said cup isn’t happening. Years 4-8 of the new Igor deal will be the next guy’s problem
Drury needs to fix the D, RW, and 3C.
Drury will be the GM as long as he wants to be. BTW, the team has been pretty successful in the 3 years he’s been on the job.
Drury serves at Slats’ pleasure until proven otherwise
Doesn’t matter what Igor wants. It’s what the team needs. I have a backup goalie who was as good as Igor all year. Earlers proved you don’t need an elite goalie to win in the playoffs. Three teams with the best save % in POs are Vegas, Rangers, Boston. What do they have in common? None are in the Cup Finals.
Top 5 teams in save % in reg season; Jets, Panthers, Bruins, Blues, Kings. (NYR 6, NYI 7) Not saying a team does not require good goaltending to win but we have seen the Henk Era and there is NO need to repeat the mistake of giving your goalie too much Cap Hit Deal. Take the 12M he wants and get two $6M forwards who can possess the puck and play a responsible 2way game.
Drury is a good GM and Shesty is getting paid
Goalie market is interesting if you look at current contracts. There are only 5 guys making over 6.
Price – $10.5M – mistake
Bob – $10M – can’t afford anymore
Vasilesky – $9.5M – can’t afford anymore
Hellybuck – $8.5M – more reasonable but still too much
Sorokin – $8.5M – too much
Gibson – $6M – crapola
Fox was Norris runner up last year, played all 82 games, plus the 7-game playoff. This year he missed 10 in the regular after a dirty knee hit and then took another knee hit that aggravated it but largely kept playing although at a less effective level. Two years ago he played 78 + 20 in the playoffs. Are we concerned about his durability?
Yes I am. And further more not trying to be a Debbie downer, but if Drury pays Twerkin $11+ don’t hold your breath. The lifetime will continue for years to come.
Blame the goalie whisperer for being too good at his job!
Shesty to Toronto for Wolf, Knies and a pick? It’s not great, but this is a salary dump of a guy who is going to walk at the end of next season.
Agreed on cap killer shestyorkin
Agreed on Cat-killer Oilers.
The choke is on.
ORF
I think you mean Woll, sign me up,
Puddy Cats losing tonite couldn’t happen to nicer guys… The league wants McDavid and a smaller market Canadien team to hoist the chalice.
How many of the officials are from Western Can?
The Earlers outplayed them in most of the games and did not cower when FLA tried their post-whistle BS early in the series.
Let’s see how ‘funny’ Maurice is after a historic choke.
How many of these deals are worth it?
2024 DEFENSEMEN CAP HITS
Rangers aren’t dumping Shesty unless they have no chance making playoffs nest season…highly unlikely
4 Josi Fox McAvou Makar
Fox is worth 9.5? Enjoy the Division Champs banners
I agree. They won’t let Igor walk. I suggested the Woll, Knies deal because it would bring them two guys on ELCs with growth potential. Knies is a big, young winger who had 35 points as a 21 year old and Woll’s number look pretty good for limited action. It seemed plausible to me. I’m not sure if TO has the cap space to accept Igor’s salary demands.
Even if he thinks it’s the right move I don’t think Drury would have the stones to do it. The potential for Igor skating the Cup in Toronto while the Ranger goaltending craters would scare him off. Trading the guy who was by consensus the Rangers best player as they made the final 4 his past season would be a radical move. He could wind up like Roy in Colorado. BTW, Ottinger and Demko are two others guys who will be coming up for big raises in the next couple of years. Igor could set the market for them. I think they will try to sign him for between Sorokin’s and Bob’s numbers.
Matt Duchene is a UFA. Is he worth looking at? His actual salary was $5MM last year.
I think the UFA names to watch are, Kane, Toffoli, and Stevenson.
Definitely a big no to Kane
Kane to NYR is more of a scream than a whisper at this point. Please, please no! It would be such a classic NYR move for all the wrong reasons.
Igor to SJS for their #1 (14th) and #2 picks (#42) in 2024 and second 1st rounder in 2025 (from VGK)
SJS gets a real goalie, NYR replace the cupboard and avoid the crushing Igor cap. Won’t see SJS in SCF for at least three yeras.
Mantha is an interesting name out there. Had a strong season (walk year so beware) but plays RW and is a 2 way player with size (that is not necessarily used most of the time). Curious what his number is. Vegas rumored to want to keep him, so that is a good sign in some respects.
If Drury signs Kane, well, I’m right again, he’s a dumbazz!
st pete
as you well know “this one will last a lifetime”. so there’s different stages of grief. just have to get to the acceptance part.
Alex
Thanks for the encouraging words.
SN, a big no on Mantha. As Serrivelli predicted, Mantha was a healthy scratch during the playoffs. There is something amiss with him. Stay away. Far, far away.

Bertuzzi is a left wing as well. Tiffoli or bust! or keep wacko kakko
ORF Duchene could be an interesting option at the right price for 3C but don’t think that price will be there nor for the term you would want. Youd have a pretty dynamic third line not exactly a traditional checking center though he can match up and has the size (and maybe still the speed?)
Im assuming Mika is ours forever of course
Kakko and 30, to San Jose, for 14 and Ferraro. This would put the Rangers in position to draft one of the following, C, Michael Hage. RW, Beckett Sennecke. LW/RW, Cole Eiserman. RW Liam Greentree.
Ferraro is 15 lbs heavier than Lindgren, same height.
used to be
who did you use to be
Alex
Great question.
Duchesne isnt a checking center
dont think Lav liked Mantha in Washington
No to Duchesne no to Kane.
if they go center, it should be Stevenson. He’s the one that fits the role.
a lot of smoke on Kane. Might as well come around to it.
Please no more small forwards. Draft the largest, good skating defenseman available.
i was wondering if used to be used to be BDL?
not an insult to either
Beezle, That would be Charlie Elick. He’s a big RD, and has been linked to the rangers b
bdl and anthony from a few years back were most into the draft prospects. anthony another one who left way too early
Trading Igor for picks is closing the window. I’m not ready to do that at my age. They need to get players back for him.
okay on Kane depending on the price …plus our 8.5 million center needs a winger that can set him up
UTB Minx will go crazy with Elick if the stuff about him using his stick to defend is true. I’m still partial to Jesse Pulkkinen. Sounds like he will go late first/early second. Big boy that can handle the puck and skate with it, take a hit and make a hit. End of day, like I said earlier, just don’t want them taking undersized forwards anymore. Cole Beaudoin may also still be available late in the first and should be considered, looks like he could turn into a great 3C, anything more would be bonus.
ORF – Quick and another decent backup splitting the load should be fine with a better defense (positionally and team) in front of them. This would be the time to move Igor for the best return.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/scouts-analysis-what-could-jets-get-in-rutger-mcgroarty-trade/
Trading goalies. For players. Bruins got a lesser goalie, a depth center, and the 25th pick from OTT for ullmark
Flames got bahl and 2025 1st rd pick for markstrom.
to bring in anybody with $ on new or existing contract we need to move chytil by any means possible.
lets go oilers. mcdavid come get that cup.
Which would be the bigger choke? Cats choking the 3 game lead, or Oilers choking the comeback?
Panthers just had their biggest celebrity at a game this season on the jumbotron. A secondary cast member of SNL. Lol
The cats, wwpd…..by far
What is wrong with you guys?? Igor is going nowhere.
Regardless of how much money he wants
Stanley Cup Final Jamesgeau
Self-doubt has already engulfed the Panthers. Game 7 won’t end well for them.
OK. Alanis Morrisette is now the biggest celebrity. She sang the anthems.
LGR!
ev
who you rooting for
what jersey are you wearing
how many edm fans there
oh and darn it
yeah
go oilers
Bob has been participation-trophy level
Much more Oilers game than any other game this series.
Wearing a Panther jersey.
I’m rooting for a good game.
I love Bronski Beat, but please Scotiabank, enough!
Edmonton is playing very tentatively. The Panthers look like they want it more.
Hit that perfect beat boy
beat boy
beat boy
SN feed! You know who is the bestest everest!
Messier looks like an undertaker
I feel like Edmonton is just too fast for the Panthers.
EV you doing the final NHL postgame?
I thought the Panthers got back to their game more, heavy forecheck with big hits every chance they got. I think if Panthers can go into the third period tied or leading they will find a way to win it. With that said, I would like to see the Oilers win it, if for no other reason but to make sure the Rangers can’t be the first team in 80+ years to blow a 3-0 game lead in the finals, should they ever make the finals in coming years. Last thing I ever want to hear is another chant similar to 1940.
mkh thats great psychological defensive thinking. I’d rather the panthers win it but I like where your head is at
Emily Kaplan dressed for the rodeo
Edmonton can score goals in bunches very quickly. Matter of mistakes and if they can tire out the PuddyKats
Surprising call… Canadian fix must be in
In regards to Igor, something to keep in mind is the Goalie Whisperer is stepping back from his everyday coaching duties, so any new goalie will not get the benefit of having him around as much. Personally, I think it’s a huge mistake to give Igor 12 mil for 8 years, but I expect that’s what Drury does. Like others, I would prefer two better 6 million forwards.
Then again… one of the refs is from Calgary. The other is from BC. Country over fandom? Hmmm
Beezle…nope.
Should’ve asked me before. I haven’t really been paying enough attention 🤷🏻♂️
Sorry, Beezle.
Janmark has had a great series
lol Hockey Hall of Fame and Canadian political commerical. A refreshing change from Lexus or some pharma ad
McDumber and Ferraros are horrible
EV 😥
Edmonton seems to have a lot more room in the offensive zone than the NYR ever did
SportsNet is definitely better. They can be homers too but at least not clowns about it. Generally a much more knowledgeable take on things.
Kascmuck the Diva diver wondering why refs don’t give him the calls
Edm rreciprocate by giving Reinhart wide open walk into the slot
Starting to look like the Panthers are going to get their first Stanley Cup tonight.
If I heard this right, were Oilcans to come back and win, it would be first time in a game 7 SCF a team came back in the 3rd to win since… 1942 lol The planets align!
One more period left. Oilers need 20 good minutes.
Draisaitl looking like Mika in this series.
Like a stringy haired vagrant?
would think fla will be favorites to repeat if they hold on
Oilers are in trouble.
They need another breakaway.
Oilers can score two in a hurry, still good amount of time.
fla shutting down the big guns
wow
Oilers have certainly had their chances
Panthers finally remembered how to play defense this game.
in the games that count they’ve shut down the lightning, bruins, us and oilers
Chinese Fireplace!
edm guys totally gassed in minutes played in 3rd
They had a million chances … no puck luck at all
we can only hope fla loses 3 really good guys this off season. otherwise they’ll repeat
You saw a good game, Ev.
Good series. Panthers shut down the Oilers when they had to. 48 hours to buyouts and arbitration offers.
At least we lost to the cup champs, I guess…
edmonton would have beaten us too. these were the best 2 teams
Edmonton lost because there were no ex-Rangers on the team.
“They had a million chances … no puck luck at all”
Sometimes, you get the bounces; other times, the bounces get you.
lol Maurice: “I saw Sam Bennett smile today for the first time in two years”
McDavid is about to get shafted for the Conn Smythe trophy….
See? EV already has all the material he needs for the postgame lol
“Edmonton lost because there were no ex-Rangers on the team.”
Or because there are future Rangers on the team?
They are trying to prevent Canada from going up in flames tonight
Surprised Tkachuk didn’t trip skating the cup around
odds to win next year
fla +900
carolina +950
colorado +950
dallas +1000
edm +1000

Oilers in 8.
Glad they finished the thing up before July
Please say away from this guy!
Corey Perry loses four Stanley Cup Finals on four different teams within five years
My shadenfreud didn’t allow me to enjoy that as much as I should’ve. Lol
JBytes, there’s always an ex-Ranger on the cup team. This one has Tarasenko and mikkola.
Drury’s on the clock.
seems that july 1st free agency frenzy is on espn +
not nhl network
Drury should sign Perry and send him off to the wilderness like a scapegoat, hopefully taking Sam’s curse with along with him
And just like that, no more hockey games until September.
and now the fun part for all the armchair GMs
As a Ranger fan for 53 years the only thing I have to look forward to is the off season futile effort to get better. Rinse and repeat. I’m broken!
Corey Perry is a professional loser.
Good for Maurice
is Perry secretly a DJ??
2027………
”Ranger Captain Connor McDavid, come get the Stanley Cup!”
(just like Messier in 1994)
that’s why Drury shouldn’t sign Shesterkin to a contract with a $12.5M annual cap hit.
Instead of staying in the locker room, Mcdavid should have come to accept the conn smythe trophy then thrown it into the stands, like a true leader
*NEW POST*
So they file for arbitration with Lindgren and make Schneider a QO in the next 48 hours? Trivigno is the only other RFA they have who might be interested in coming back. He looks to be an AHL lifer or maybe goes to Europe. If the money is similar the lifestyle is easier. No buyouts likely.
