NY Rangers (47-20-4) vs Philadelphia Flyers (36-27-9)

The NY Rangers, still clinging to 1st in the Metro division by a point over Carolina but with a game in hand, host the visiting Flyers. Hopefully they brought some fresh cheesesteaks to share!
The Rangers are 7-3-0 in their last ten and are coming off of a big shootout win over the Panthers on Saturday night. The Flyers are 4-4-2, most recently losing to the Panthers and beating the Bruins. The Filth are in a battle with the Capitals for both third in the Metro, and perhaps the 2nd wildcard, so big game tonight for both teams. Perhaps the Rangers can find something to make Torts apologize for on Thursday? 😁
From a statistical view, there is little difference between the Flyers power play and their overall shooting percentage (13.2 vs 8.7%) so the Rangers should not worry about taking a penalty trying to make a play. However, the Philly PK is 84.4%, 3rd in the NHL just in front of the Rangers 83.6%. At 2.89 GF/GP, the Flyers struggle to score, though their goaltending carousel has manged to keep them in most games at 3.01 GA/GP, 16th in the league.
Shesterkin is expected in net for the Rangers based upon the morning skate and Ersson for the Flyers (21-14-6, 2.66 GAA, 0.898 SV%).
As to the rest of the lineup, Cuylle is expected back after being a healthy scratch against Florida and Brandon Scanlin will make his first NHL start pairing with Ruhwedel. Scanlin comes in to replace the injured Gustafsson who took a nasty elbow to the head during the OT on Saturday.
The Filth report Denis Gurianov, Marc Staal, Nicolas Deslauriers, Ryan Johansen as healthy scratches and amie Drysdale (upper body), Nick Seeler (lower body), Rasmus Ristolainen (upper body) as injured.
Referees tonight are Eric Furlatt and Michael Markovic joined by linespersons James Tobias and Kiel Murchison.
The key today: the Rangers need to keep shooting at Ersson, get some bodies in front and get an early lead.

Rangers Game Review: garbage first two periods. Hot garbage third period. Good guys win.
Filth Game Review: dominated first two periods. somehow gave up 5 goals in the third and lost in OT to a soft, tired defenseman. Head Coach to be avoided for at least 24 hours.

That was a crazy game. It would be superfluous for me to add that the Rangers defense was incredibly porous this evening. The Flyers very nearly made the Rangers pay for every mistake…..and there were a lot of those. The Flyers are a dangerous team and will be a tough out in the tournament.
Fortunately there offense showed up this evening.
I haven’t yelled at my television screen like I did tonight in a long time. Well maybe I am dissembling a little….I have been yelling at the screen a lot lately. At least my wife is entertained by yelling at the screen antics.
If they play like this in the playoffs many of us will be double booking appointments with our cardiologists.

I’m fine with the game. Very sloppy, but the Rangers managed the game well enough to get to OT and win.

Shesty went from a 2.60 GAA to a 2.65. From a .914 SP to a .911. In one game this late in a season is not exactly impressive….at least not in a good way.
Almost forgot….
14 days since Shesterkin’s last shutout.
That Foxy shot, however, was impressive. Normally, taking that shot in OT usually only results in a change of possession, not a win. Way to make it count. 👍
