Rangers 2, CBJ 4

Published by

on

The win streak is over, long live the win streak.

The Rangers looked a bit gassed coming in from a tough game against the Filth the afternoon before. A slow footed first period, which included Rempe losing his first NHL fight, saw some hope with a late goal by Panarin (33) at 14:22.

Columbus opened the 2nd with a goal at 00:18 but the Twin Towers managed to tie it at 11:11, Edstrom (2) from Rempe (1). The hope of turning this game around was short lived as Columbus would score again just moments later at 11:57 and again at 18:35.

The power play was off and there was little if any defensive play. CBJ was able to go from one end to the other virtually untouched.

Rangers get a chance to recover, regroup and try again as they play a delayed 2nd part of the away/home against Columbus on Wednesday night, 7PM at MSG.

ORF I don’t know why the built in wordpress filter hates you but it clearly does. Beware the AI? As the site is hosted by wordpress and the spamfilter as well, perhaps it has to do with comments made elsewhere that are also on wordpress, I really don’t know. I’ll try to check more frequently but it requires a screen refresh to update, I don’t get notified, so there will be delays.

The PO is painful to watch with Meeka turning it over or Tro wondering around cluelessly. Way too deferential to Bread.

how is Meeka not shooting the puck when given primo feeds from Fox? If he isn’t shooting, he is a net negative out there.

hope they didn’t peak too soon; send in the reinforcements, this horse is laboring with Lav smacking the whip before the backstretch.

BDL you bring up a good point on Kakko – why have they not tried to mix him in on the PK? I have seen Schneider get a few minutes on PK but usually it is because Trouba is off. Maybe start using him a little more too? The 4th line definitely could have had more minutes as well if nothing more than to soften the opponent up.

  5. SN Avatar
    SN

Kakko played some pk last season

put Edstrom out there on pk; with that reach, the passing lanes are clogged

you can’t have your two top centers playing pk all game. Another reason Johnny B is not the answer.

the TOI for the big guys was ridiculous last night. 2nd of back to backs, and those guys are all over 20 minutes. Fox played 27! Kakko is one of the best D forwards on the team. He can’t kill penalties?! It’s not that long ago that Torts ran this team in to the ground. Laviolette is doing the same thing.

It’s a good point, BDL. I like the Ed and Rempe, but if the coach doesn’t trust them for TOI, then Drury needs to bring in players he will.

I know I’m probably alone on this, but I’ve grown tired of the sideshow Bob stuff. Neither of Rempe, and Edstrom are NHL players currently. Maybe with time, but not now. If I thought Laviolette would play them, I would call up Othmann and Berard. Since we know he won’t, I would bring back Pitlick. Play him and Belzile. Call up Jake to be the extra.

I will continue to repeat this because it’s what the Minx does. I will be shocked, speechless, amazed, and astonished if the Rangers win the cup with Weaka Mika as their #1 center. It is impossible to believe such a thing could happen.

not exactly going out on a limb saying we won’t win the cup. with mika or without. and based on offense and total line salary his line has been 2nd line all season, even though his and kreiders +/- are both good.

I’d like to see that 4th line get 8-10 minutes of real time before shipping the two kids back down. Definitely are raw talent at this time but the instincts to battle in corners and go to front of net are there.

Coaching staff needs to have Rempe do warm ups further from the blue line to avoid these pre-game challenges. I fully understand why the kid doesn’t back down but it can’t be happening every game going forward.

My point has nothing to do with any of the good the bad and ugly of the Rangers. It has to do with the fact that they do not have a #1C. We can call Vermont #1 or Mika #1 or #2. Mika is just not producing what he’s paid to do. Having said that, if they play the right way, D first, they just may get lucky.

  17. bobbyo2019 Avatar

BDL that is the chicken/egg problem, similar to what we had at times with Torts. Ride the big guns until they break down because the little ones might not be perfect and make a mistake. Hope he at least gives them a spin Wed against a team we should be able to beat blind folded. Never know what you have if you don’t us it, kinda like not taking the new toy out of the box out of fear of breaking it. What’s the point?

This bunch has a character flaw mixed in. When they finally add a Beast or two, many of them think it’s no longer incumbent on themselves to stop hitting, grinding, hustling back, and finishing checks. Drury must identify and either re-educate or jettison the guilty, no matter who.

The Rangers have 3 players (Bread@19, Kreider@65, Tro@99) in the top 100 in ES Points per 60; this is a Cup pretender.

Interesting names on that list are Stutzle (30), Giroux (36), Coleman (42), Byfeld (60), Tarasenko (63), Buchnevich (74), Malkin (87).

Meeka’s issue is between the ears; plenty of skill, mostly in odd man rushes, defensively responsible, hard but inaccurate shot. Not a physical player and has trouble with turnovers when pressured on wall.

Giroux is the type of player they need but don’t think he wants to come here. would play him between Kreider and Meeka to let those guys break out

Henrique is the more obvious candidate for 3C.

In regards to players fighting with a visor from the previous post. As of last year, there were only 7 players left in the league that don’t wear a visor, so It’s pretty safe to say that 99% of future fights will include players with visors. Visors became mandatory in 2013-14 for any players with less than 25 games played in the NHL.

Rempe should tighten up his chin strap, to keep his helmet and visor in place where they belong. I am hoping Rempe gets a chance to concentrate on a heavy forecheck and some jam in front of the net in the coming games, to see what he can bring to the team hockey wise. He is faster than Reeves so that should help with the forecheck part, which will hopefully force opposing Dmen into some mistakes and rushed passes.

As of 2023 season, these are the players who don’t wear the visor:

    • Ryan O’Reilly, Nashville Predators.
    • Zach Bogosian, Minnesota Wild.
    • Jamie Benn, Dallas Stars.
    • Matt Martin, New York Islanders.
    • Milan Lucic, Boston Bruins.
    • Jordie Benn, Toronto Maple Leafs.

    Where are they now?

    Sports broadcaster Al Trautwig

Al Trautwig realizes a return to full-time television work is not likely at this stage of his life and career. But that does not mean the 68-year-old has run out of things to say.
“I’m planning on writing a book,” he told Newsday recently. “There’s a lot of good stuff in there – or will be.”
That figures. Surely, he managed to collect plenty of good behind-the-scenes material during his decades in sports television, including 30 at MSG Networks.
“Oh, my God,” he said, indicating an affirmative.
Still, do not expect much dirt.
“That’s always a hard thing to do,” he said. “It’s always like, what kind of dirt can you dish? I’m not really sure yet. I don’t really have that much dirt.”
It has been three years since Trautwig left MSG when the network opted not to renew his contract.
In the interim, he has taught at Adelphi, his alma mater, through last spring. He also recently underwent cancer treatment. He did not specify the type of cancer but said he has been “cleared, and now it is just a matter of getting better.”
The cancer scare did affect his speech, which was not as clear as usual in a phone conversation with Newsday. But his plan when fully healthy is to return to college teaching and/or to tackle that book.
Trautwig grew up in Garden City South, graduated from Carey High School then Adelphi and currently lives in Glen Cove, part of a lifelong tie to Long Island that included stints as an Islanders stick boy and Nets ball boy in the 1970s.
He also over decades became one of the most versatile and recognizable figures in sports media nationally, including 16 Olympics (11 for NBC, 5 for ABC), and locally, notably as a studio host for MSG.
When he left MSG in 2021, he told Newsday, “I have over 30 years of wonderful memories at MSG. Unfortunately, the non-renewal of my contract after 30 years with no real explanation is not one of them.”
MSG said at the time, “Al will always be one of the great broadcasters in sports television and we wish him all the best.”
Trautwig took a leave of absence in September 2019 for what was described as personal reasons after he appeared unwell to many viewers during coverage of a Rangers preseason game.
That December, he returned with a pre-recorded interview of then Rangers president John Davidson, but he did not appear for the rest of that winter sports season or the following one.
Trautwig said he holds no grudge against MSG.
“I think when you work in this business long enough, you’re prepared for that,” he said. “I was disappointed, but I wasn’t shocked.”
He added, “I’m very happy. The MSG thing ran its course.”
Might he someday return to TV?
“Anything is possible,” he said, “but when you get to my age, I think it’s very hard to work your way in there.”
He always will have the memories.
“Oh, my God, yeah; it was fantastic,” he said. “[The Knicks] should have won a championship [in 1994], and they didn’t. They were in a great run.
“On any given night, for the longest time, they were good enough to win. And the Garden was electric. Pat Riley was there, and it was fantastic.”
He said he still thinks about the games the Knicks could have won early in the 1994 NBA Finals against the Rockets that would have wrapped up the title even before the teams went to Houston for Games 6 and 7, where the Rockets secured a 4-3 series victory.
“They were easily in a position to win, and they didn’t, and that bothered me,” he said.
Trautwig said he still watches sports avidly, including the Knicks.
“They have a lot of heart,” he said.

“It seems like they have a lot of resilience. Oh, God, I would love to see [a championship].”

A team’s cap hit is calculated based on each day of the season (186 days). For every day a player is on the roster, the team’s cap hit is their full year cap hit divided by 186.  Once a player is on the roster, the calculations assume they will be on the roster for the remainder of year. Example: If a player with a $925K cap hit gets called up 86 days into the season (100 days remaining), on that day the team’s projected cap hit for the year goes up $497,312 ($925K/186)*100.

Cap space “accrues” over time.  A team with $500K cap room to start the year can add a player with a $1,000,000 Cap Hit halfway through season (Day 93). Due to the way the cap is calculated, a player worth $1M annually will only count for $500,000 in actual cap charge through the remainder of the year.

Sn/Alex does it matter this year? Since the Rangers are in LTIR, don’t they need room for the entire cap hit as measured against the LTIR allowance, as opposed to the normal proration math that you would normally do?

  81. Alex Avatar
    Alex

    wwpd

the longer they wait the less that the new guy would cost.

said another way if rangers have 1 million in cap space and there’s 1/4 of season left they could fit a 4 million salary,

    it’s a daily calculation

problem would arise if a guy came off ltir before playoffs. then they’d have to fit in his whole salary

  82. Alex Avatar
    Alex

    WWPD

if you go to cap friendly rangers part there is something called cap statistics

shows our current cap space of 4.4 million. that can grow a bit before deadline if we’re not using LTIR to bring in extra players based on short term injuries etc. seems that some days we do and some days we don’t which is why on off days they have sent guys down to help accrue further cap space.

Tarasenko and Mikkola came over on Feb 9!!! 23 days before last years deadline. I see your point; it’s on top of your head…

10 days left is ~5% of the season or an extra $220k on top of current NYR cap of $4.4M; not a meaningful amount on a relative basis.

One reason a team would wait is to allow additional playoff pretenders to decide they are not in the mix thus increasing the pool of available talent and expanding the potential trade alternatives.

  86. wwpd Avatar
    wwpd

So that 4.4M is all in the LTIR reserve pool. Means drury should today be able to take on additional players with a total annual cap hit of 4.4M. Not prorated, as it doesn’t seem to change according to the trade machine.

If it applied to prorated salaries, the rangers could pick up multiple superstars with no cap concerns whatsoever (this year).

  87. wwpd Avatar
    wwpd

Or that would be almost $17M of prorated cap at the deadline

    wwpd

the amt can be reduced over next 10 days when we’re using LTIR for whichever days we are using it. some days we might use, some days we might not. which is again why the team throughout the year has sent guys down on off days. most of season we’ve been in LTIR due to chytil or fox.

He needs to use his limited ice time to prove he’s a hockey player. He can skate and he goes to the net. There may be something there, but he doesn’t prove it sitting in the box and pure goons are of limited value in the playoffs.

Do we think Rempe wants a rematch with Olivier tonight, or he just plays some smart, hard-nosed hockey?

I’d rather he just get in on the forecheck, bang some bodies around and drive the net/screen Merzlikins. He’s asking for trouble if he keeps dropping them every game. He already had his bell rung last game.

Just checked BlogFriendly and I see almost all of you don’t have any NTC/NMC! Minx the only one with a 1 team NMC 😅
