The NY Rangers, still 1st in the Metro division, return to Gotham for a tilt against the Golden Knights. Tonight and tomorrow are the last two games before the All-Star game and planned break for the Rangers.
The Rangers, coming off a disheartening OT loss to the Sharks, look to regroup again and get two points off of one of the better teams in the league. They’ll need to play much more north-south, get bodies to the net and not drop the ropes at the blue line. Vegas trails the strong Canucks team and is 5th in the Western conference by P%, having gone 6-3-1 in their last ten. NYR have struggled and are 3-5-2 in the past ten.
Logan Thompson is in goal for Vegas tonight along with his 2.72 GAA and 0.907 SV%. Shesterkin is in net for the Rangers, 2.82 GAA and 0.901 SV%.
Some lineup changes for the Rangers: Bonino was waived Thursday and cleared this afternoon; he’ll have until after the break to decide whether to retire or report to Hartford. His place in the line up is taken by Wolfpack callup Jake Leschyshyn (who is likely Prucha’d tonight). Based upon practice, Wheeler is back on the right wing with the Huggie Twins, Brodzinski will center the third line with Cuylle on the left and Kakko on the right wings. A perplexing change is the apparent move of Gustafsson with Fox and Lindgren with Schneider. Perhaps this is an attempt to get Lindgren more even strength ice time given Fox’s power play role?
Injuries: Chytil remains the only NYR injury (additional news on him in the previous thread comments). Vegas has a long list – Michael Amadio (upper body), Tobias Bjornfot (undisclosed), William Carrier (upper body), Jack Eichel (lower body), Ben Hutton (upper body) William Karlsson (lower body), Jiri Patera (undisclosed), Shea Theodore (upper body).
On this date in history: In 1998 Adam Graves became the ninth player in NYR franchise history to score 200 goals in a 4-1 win at the Washington Capitals.

The last time the Rangers scored more than 2 goals in a game against a playoff team was December 29th in the loss to the Panthers. I don’t think Tampa was in a playoff position when we played them the next day. But even if you count them it’s a difference of a single day.

So yes, he was a Ranger first. Then won with Tampa, then came back here.

Torts was assistant coach to John Muckler during the 99-2000 season, and served as interim coach of the Rangers for 4 games at the end of the season when Muckler was fired.
Torts then went to the Lightning the following season, winning the Cup in 2004.

I wanted to be wrong about my assessment of this team heading into the season so badly…. That ridiculous start to the season “almost” tricked me, but the red flags started to sprout one after another.
It was fun while it lasted.
As far as I’m concerned, save for Panarin, Cullye and “maybe” Laffy & Othmann, there is NOBODY on this roster I wouldn’t include in a hockey trade.

Even their bread and butter isn’t getting it done.

Clearly there are issues. I have not criticized the coach, but the dearth of ice time for what is now the 4th line (Kakko-Brodzinski-Cuylle) is alarming. Tonight was the first night that I was frustrated with Zibenajad. He is skating and working but not accomplishing anything. But the biggest concern is how the #1 goalie has turned into a colander. He looks lost, nervous, skittish and not at all confident. He is on his knees far too early and picks now seem to be going through him. And the guy has to go to Toronto when he would be better off taking time away.
