That was a garbage game by the NYR. Quick kept them in it as long as he could. Don’t understand the regression in play this team seems to go into on a dime. They had neither effort nor smarts. If they hit their head against the wall as much as they tried ridiculous passes there would be a very large pool of blood. Edmonton is, if anything, a fast team. You don’t try to do that stuff with a fast team.

From Uncle Larry: “This marked the ninth time the Blueshirts had surrendered two goals within a span of 1:18. Six times it has happened against Quick, who in fact had heard chants of “Quickie! Quickie!” late in the second period after several circus saves on an Edmonton power play.”

  119. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

Some of Bread’s worst tendencies are wearing off on LAF. He is making too many low percentage cross ice passes that become turnovers now. That line has to be defensively responsible. Cooscoos did get his predicted major brain fart from Miller. He not only fell down to cough it up at the blue line. When he got up he did a fly by and was actually behind the goal line when McLeod tapped it in. He wasn’t the only anger watching McLeod on that one.

  120. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Zibanejad season has been odd. You can count on one hand the games where you thought Zibanejad was really good. The rest of the time he’s just kind of there. Not playing poorly, but not really doing anything of importance. Yet he still has a good amount of points.

  121. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I looked at Vallikat’s expected goal model for the game and he had it pretty even for the game at 4.37 to 3.87in favor of the Rangers. The third was the killer. It was Oilers 1.95 to 1.87. They should have gotten 2 and got 4. That matched what I saw. The 2nd was off the juicy rebound from Quick and they all lost sight of the puck on the 4th. Most goals are scored off of mistakes. They needed to make less of them. Hopefully they will tighten it up tonight.

  122. St Pete Eli Avatar
    St Pete Eli

    ORF
Panarin is an amazing talent, but he is as stubborn as they come. I agree his east/west tendencies are affecting Busto. But it also rubs off on the entire team. Shoot the puck fir crying out loud, crash the net, if nothing is open or there get the puck deep, my word hockey 101! Cross ice passes to McDavid and company doesn’t end well.

  123. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

It is an imperfect stat but LAF, VT and Bread are -8, -3 and -6. LAF has the worst +/- on the team and bread is 3rd worst. LAF has been a + player in the past. (Zack Jones with limited ice time is -7). Mika, CK and Wheels are all +. That’s why they are the first line. Bread has been trending more – the last two seasons. He is dragging that whole line down with his turnovers. That will kill them against good teams and make wins harder than they should be against bad teams. Fox is also -1 for the season and that has to get better. He was +28 last year. Right now Gustafson is statistically comparable to him at <10% of his salary. I'm going to be optimistic. As good as their record is there is lots of room for improvement by key individuals. Better coaching has gotten better results even though some guys are not playing as well as they have in the past.
