Good morning, Boneheads!
So Tkachuk deal is done. I don’t think it was even discussed on some serious level between Calgary and NY, but I have no doubt Drury made a call, at the very least.
It’s hard to judge who won that trade. Florida got the best player in that deal, who is still 24 and signed long term, so I guess they got the better end of it. But Calgary got back two very good, and very productive players, albeit for a short term. I’m sure they’ll try to sign them.
For the record, if I am a GM and have to surrender what Florida surrendered for Tkachuk, I do it in a heartbeat.
Qualifying offers expired yesterday, by the way

If florida needs help with cap issue could we make it work for Bennett?
… Up … to the east side
Cregg
Yep
3 more years at 4.425. Would love to have Bennett, but how?
How? Send Troobuh to Seattle.
At least Bennett didn’t bunch up his playoff scoring in just a few of his games. Alright, he had two of his points in a two-game hot streak and scored a goal a couple of games later. And that was it. Plus, he’s had more than 30 points in 28% of the seasons he’s played, including once since his rookie season seven years ago.
That, of course is sarcasm. But I primarily come here to learn stuff (absolutely not sarcasm) so, why would we be so interested in ponying up young players and more $ for Sam Bennett? He was 3c on a team that didn’t go as far in the post-season as its regular season implied it would. And he doesn’t seem to have done a whole heckuva lot during those playoffs. Is he a shut-down defender?
I found it interesting to read comments on the Tkachuk-Huberdeau et al trade from denizens of the Flames and Panthers, each complaining about how the guys traded totally disappeared in the playoffs this year.
Playoff is a beast that walks by itself, by its own rules, occasionally producing heroes and semi-heroes in carrier grey mice and humiliating superstars in their sometimes pathetic performance.

Rangers would need a third team involved to trade with FL since neither has any cap space. The Rangers could provide say Chytil and draft picks and/or prospects to the third team who would take Say Bennett, retains part of his salary and passes him on to the Rangers. I think that is likely an overpay on the Rangers part, but, the numbers can be made to work.
In case anyone is wondering the signing of Trochek is the end of the kid line.
But according to those in the know
Hedgehog was already planning on obtaining Bennett in trade. He was just waiting for the right year when we would finally be able to win.
According to those in the nose, Marchand just raised rents.
Marchand’s nose is considering going Condo.
Larry sez:
“I wonder. Is it a cap-space issue, contract ask, or evaluation of talent and roster requirements (or a combination of all of the above) that is stopping the Rangers from re-upping Tyler Motte at the expense of keeping Dryden Hunt ($762,500) on the squad?
“Again, though, if it’s another $500,000, that amounts to a difference of $2.325 million of space at the deadline that Drury must do everything in his power to preserve.”
(NYP)
They haven’t closed the deal with Kakko yet. Until they do Drury doesn’t knw what he ahs left to sign anyone else. Brooksie will have to wait just like everyone else.
Carp most likely contractually restrained from appearing here or in Vegas.
Ironically I had said to myself on Friday ‘Florida could probably just offer to swap Huberdeau with another roster player and pull off the acquisition’…and so they do. Much needed element down there for the Panzers.
Uncle Larry trying to stir the pot with Kakko. Needless article. I’ve said numerous times over the years I think that the offer-sheet is a tool that can and should be used more often. Fact remains that it just isn’t.
To say that other GMs wouldn’t like to have Kakko because they don’t want to offer sheet him is off base.
ps Larry’s just going to harp on this Patrick Kane thing from now through March unfortunately..
Motte made 1.45 this past season on a 2 year deal that was worth 2.45. I would think he’s looking for 2 million per which Drury just can’t allocate to a 4th liner right now. The fact that Goodrow may potentially slot in on the 4th line is a bad enough look. Add Reaves’ salary and another 2 million to that you’re talking about nearly an 8+ million dollar fourth line on a team that can’t afford a top six wing or a 3C. I’d be fine with having Motte back but can’t justify that price.
The only thing Hedgehog was worried about when Bennett was being shopped was getting his hands on a veal parmigiana hero from Carbone’s down on Thompson street. The traffic was terrible on trade deadline day. By the time he got there, ordered and ate it was after 3pm..
Made some calls took some calls had no balls

The Islanders are seriously interested in signing free agent Nazem Kadri.
It was previously reported that the Avalanche are trying to keep the striker who helped the team win the Stanley Cup. Kadri’s contract with the club ended this summer and he is expected to be eligible for a long-term deal with a salary ranging from $7.5 million to $8.5 million.
According to CapFriendly, now the Islanders have a little more than $ 11 million free under the ceiling, but no contracts have been signed with Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov, the rights to which the Islanders traded from the Montreal Canadiens. At the same time, six New Yorkers forwards have active agreements with the club with a salary of $5 million or more.
Last season was for Kadri the most productive in his career. He scored 87 (28+59) points in 71 games of the regular season, and then scored another 15 (7+8) points in the Stanley Cup.
If Goodrow is on the 4th line consistently…
A) Drury has made several trades and this forward group is massively different than it is as of right now and much much deeper.
B) Drury has gone back on his word to Goodrow, who did not sign to be a 4th liner.
C) Goodrow has fallen off a cliff with his on ice play.

Achtung! Mancrush:
Rangers forward Vitaly Kravtsov posted a photo with Washington D.C. forward Yevgeny Kuznetsov in front of a Traktor sweater. (Both are the alumni of the Chelyabinsk KHL club).
“I can’t express the feeling in words the way I afore him on and off the ice. He is the one I looked up to since childhood, the person who made me fall in love with hockey. The first thing I remember about Chelyabinsk hockey since childhood is number 92, on a black and white tank city jersey”, Kravtsov wrote.
(Particularly like the part “off ice” adoration. Hope, will not follow his idol in that).
It seems they already have terms in place with Kakko, so my guess is Drury has another one or two things cooking (Motte?) before finalizing. I suspect any offer sheet, which I said the whole time is unlikely, would have happened already.

Lol, you guys are the best.
Okay, Wick, I finally got through it. Was a little boring at times, but it ended up being pretty interesting. Poor Charles, though, huh? Sounds like a bit of mystery there, too. At first, he was screaming about the throttle. Then he took the blame and said that he “did” the mistake. Then, later on, Nico Rosberg said it might have been the wind that took him out. Sounds like they messed up Sainz, too, with that pit stop. He drove a great race.
EddieJ
Yeah, that guy has had quite the season. I think Ferrari needs to get rid of their strategy team and get a whole new group because the call to put sainz towards the end was just dumb.

Hope Kaako is signed by camp
If not. Trade the kids whiny camp to ariZona
Then he can play in all their playoff games
You, guys, talk about Kakko sarcastically, like his is a disgruntled whiner. In fact, he never said a single word of dissatisfaction or being upset by the fact, not even any sign of it. On the contrary, he kindly and honestly answered the same, countless, stupidly annoying question: “Does he know why he was not put up for the game” – “No, I don’t know.” So, why? If anything, sarcasm and bewilderment belongs to GG in this case…
Unless his contract comes in lower than expected, I don’t see how he or Chytil (and likely one of Lindgren or miller) are here next season barring an unexpected player trade.
Isles should have signed Kessel by now
Not enough hot dogs
😂😁
Question: What’s a Kessel dog?
Answer: One shaped like a donut.
They just need to sign Kessel by next July 4th so he can win the Mustard Belt and they can have a parade in the parking lot for him.
In reference to hot dog we should rename Ketchup Kesselsauce?

I was referring to the story a few weeks ago. Not sure where. But it said that “Kaakos camp” expressed displeasure about his scratch.
And I’m sure his ice time.
I remember an interview with him during the season when he was taken off of breads line. Where I thought he played well. And he was not too pleased with the explanation or lack there of.

Post Sports+ – Inside The Rangers
Where things stand with Kaapo Kakko and Tyler Motte
We’re less than two months away — yes, it’s true! — from training camp for the Rangers, who are looking to build on last season’s run to the Eastern Conference Final. There’s a new second-line center on Broadway by the name of Vincent Trocheck. The kids — Alexis Lafreniere, Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko (restricted free agent), K’Andre Miller and Braden Schneider — are each a year older and three playoff rounds wiser. Vitali Kravtsov will get another shot at cracking the roster. Oh, and Brennan Othmann and Will Cuylle are hungry to make the jump to the NHL.
The No. 1 remaining order of business is to sign Kakko. Let me start off by encouraging everyone to remain calm, which, judging by the amount of questions I’ve received on this topic, is easier said than done. From what I’ve gathered, neither side is in a rush to strike a deal. With the Rangers’ current cap situation, president and general manager Chris Drury may be looking at other options to create space or set the club up for future moves before he puts a final dollar figure on the table for Kakko. But conversations continue to be had. It all seems very amicable, and there is no indication that an offer sheet will derail Kakko’s tenure in New York, though it is known that the Rangers would be in trouble if the Finnish winger were to receive one.
The target deal appears to be a two-year contract at around $2 million to $2.5 million per. There’s an understanding that the team’s cap issues mean a three-year deal is not an option. For now, the Rangers have extended Kakko a qualifying offer worth $832,500. As noted above, though, neither the Rangers nor Kakko are planning to part ways. Kakko’s agent, Mike Liut, explained this to me in a recent conversation in which he also touched on Kakko getting scratched in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Lightning.
The outlook isn’t so rosy when it comes to the prospect of re-signing center Tyler Motte. To echo Drury, it looks like too tight of a squeeze. Unless Motte is willing to take $1 million or less, the Rangers don’t have the cap space to accommodate the fiery fourth-liner. Ryan Reaves is on the books for one more year at $1.75 million. The Rangers also have Barclay Goodrow and his $3,641,667 cap hit over the next five seasons, as well as Sammy Blais’ new $1.525 million deal — Goodrow and Blais also are third-line options depending on how the roster shakes out. But the rest of the primary fourth-line options (Ryan Carpenter at $750,000, Dryden Hunt at $762,500, Gustav Rydahl at $750,000) — and other prospects — each come in under $1 million. That’s what works for the Rangers right now. Motte is certainly worth more than they can afford.
As many readers have pointed out, however, Motte still hasn’t signed anywhere. Never say never.
Let’s check in on the state of the Rangers by answering some questions (edited for clarity and aggregated based on the general topic) submitted by subscribers to Texts from the Blue Seats.
What kind of team/identity are the Rangers building?
— Dinny FitzPatrick
I like this question a lot. In my short career, one of the best parts of covering a winning team is getting to watch its dynamic develop. Every team is drastically different and has something about it that is special.
These Rangers are a unique blend of veterans and bright-eyed youngsters who are just beginning their NHL careers. With that has come an endearing dynamic between the two sides of the locker room. The veterans — Jacob Trouba, Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Barclay Goodrow and Reaves — seem to genuinely enjoy helping usher in the next generation of players and watching them experience everything for the first time. It was fun to watch how much of a kick Trouba got out of Schneider, who, as a 20-year-old rookie, tried to take in all that he could from the experienced guys on the team.
There’s a strong bond in the room that fosters a “we’re never out of it” mentality. The group of alternate captains worked well this past season.
Do you think former Rangers head coach David Quinn will succeed in San Jose?
— Michael Silvers
Quinn deserves another shot behind an NHL bench. The Rangers were his first NHL experience, and I imagine he learned a lot from it. He’s going to love Mario Ferraro, a workhorse-type defenseman out of UMass who is only 23.
Do you think Rangers will name a captain next year?
— Michael Rode
To be frank, when this question came up during the Rangers breakup day, I was a little perplexed. Are we really still talking about this captain stuff? I was even more perplexed when the door was left open to the possibility of stitching a ‘C’ on a jersey. I thought the team really bought into the approach of having six alternate captains and felt it had a positive impact on team morale. Why fix what isn’t broken?
If the Rangers were to name a captain, I’d expect Trouba or Kreider to take on the responsibility. Those are the only two who could not only handle the pressure that comes with the captaincy, but also rise to the expectations of it. Why charge Adam Fox with that kind of weight on top of everything else he does for the team on the ice? I get the argument that every team needs a captain to make it all the way, but the Rangers did just fine without one all the way to the conference final.
Which Eastern Conference team is most improved so far this offseason?
— Michael Rode
How about I list the teams I think improved most in each division, just for fun?
Atlantic: Ottawa Senators
Metropolitan: Columbus Blue Jackets
Central: Colorado Avalanche (Is this answer allowed? They brought back many of their UFAs, and if they somehow retain Nazem Kadri…)
Pacific: Los Angeles Kings
Which Rangers prospect has the best chance of cracking the opening-night roster?
— Michael Rode, Gary Heintz
If the Rangers don’t sign another defenseman before the start of the season, I’m thinking they’ll have to turn to Zac Jones or Matthew Robertson. If they do sign a defenseman, I expect Will Cuylle to be the first forward prospect in line for a roster spot.
Is Vitali Kravtsov legit to play, or is he going to be traded?
— Jonathan Moore, James Colpas, Joseph Novello
The Rangers are hoping to answer this question once and for all during this upcoming training camp. It would certainly be a big help, cap-wise, if Kravtsov made the opening-night roster. The Rangers could use another scoring right winger, so it’s likely he’ll get a look no matter what. Training camp will be big for Kravtsov.
What are the projected lines and defensive pairs?
— Scott Mason, Paul Palmer
Oh boy, let’s take a crack at this:
Kreider-Zibanejad-Lafreniere
Panarin-Trocheck-Kravtsov
Blais-Chytil-Kakko
Cuylle/Hunt/Rydahl-Goodrow-Reaves (or some variation)
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Jones/Robertson-Schneider
Shesterkin
Halak
I think if the Rangers have Goodrow as their fourth-line center, the ability to roll all four lines increases tenfold. But having Goodrow in the middle of the fourth line seems like a luxury, and would be dependent on the kids’ ability to succeed in top-six roles. Head coach Gerard Gallant may prefer to have the utility forward in the top nine.
What was the thought behind signing two goaltenders? Are they planning to use Jaroslav Halak as Igor Shesterkin’s backup and groom Louis Domingue for down the road?
— Andrew Heymann
When you look at what the Rangers lost this offseason — backup goalie Alexandar Georgiev (in a trade to Colorado) and third stringer/Hartford goalie Keith Kinkaid (in free agency to Boston) — the club needed to bring in two NHL-caliber netminders to make up for it. With Georgiev and Kinkaid out, Shesterkin was the lone remaining goalie with NHL experience in the organization. I expect Halak to back up Shesterkin, and the performance bonuses in his one-year contract indicate that will be the case, while the 30-year-old Domingue has to pass through waivers before he reports to Hartford.
What’s your take on Matthew Robertson? Is he physical enough to eventually be a stalwart back-end player for the big squad, or is he going to wind up in Hartford again for more seasoning?
— Paul Palmer
Robertson, 21, should get a look sooner rather than later. I think he has the size (6-foot-4, 201 pounds) and strength to handle the NHL level. He’ll just need to prove he can be responsible defensively and capable of keeping up with the pace. The Rangers won’t know until they give him a chance, and with the current cap constraints, that could be the route they take.
Kakko and Motte still unsigned may mean Drury is trying to move Reaves contract
Coos
You ever able to figure out that answer yet?
Thanks
Hadn’t thought of that. It’s a possibility.

Shoulda stayed for both nights. They are playing there again tonight.
Penguins just extended Heinen for 1 year @ $1 million. No reason the Rangers can’t bring back Motte in this market. He’s not a must sign, but there’s not much cap space among competitive teams and they should be able to sign him for cheap. Trade or waive Gauthier, Hunt and/or Hajek if you need to.
Motte can also play center, which Hunt can’t do.
Heinen had a $2.8 aav the past 2 years and scored a lot more than Motte did last year. Rangers can afford Motte.
I think Drury is going to trade Krakko just feeling.
St Pete
He should, I don’t want him to but he should.
Wick
The return is important and needs to be will thought out by Drury.
Somehow I don’t particular like it, despite of seemingly noble cause. Probably, b/c of place and NHL players concentration:
On July 30, exactly on my B.D., in Moscow, at the Arena Sever stadium, a charity match will be held with the participation of Russian NHL stars and showmen. The money earned from the game will go to the treatment of little Elisey Artamonov, who needs surgery after a medical error.
ARTEMY PANARIN, Alexander Ovechkin, Pavel Buchnevich, Vladislav Gavrikov, Dmitry Orlov, Ilya Lyubushkin, Alexander Radulov, Vadim Shipachev, Vasily Podkolzin, Ivan Prosvetov, Vyacheslav Voynov, Valery Nichushkin, Andrey Nikolishin, Klim Kostin, Oleg Znarok and other NHL and KHL players.
Something else to to kill space and time:
Former USA national team and a number of NHL clubs forward Bobby Ryan was detained at the Nashville airport for theft, Scoop Nashville reports.
The store employee stated that Ryan did not pay for the purchases and moved on. After that, the former hockey player left the stolen goods on the counter of another store and went to a bar. When the police detained Bobby, he was so drunk that could not even tell the time and place of his arrest. Later, the store dropped legal claims against the hockey player, but he was still charged with being in a public place while totally intoxicated.
Bobby Ryan is the recipient of the 2020 Bill Masterton Trophy for dedication to hockey. The player was awarded it for having managed to overcome his craving for alcohol and return to professional hockey. In the NHL, the 2010 Olympic silver medalist played 866 games for Anaheim, Ottawa and Detroit. Nice…
