Rangers-3, Penguins-4, 3OT

Good morning, boneheads!

I’m glad I don’t have to a writeup this morning. Because even if I had to, I couldn’t. I do not remember much of the OT even though I watched it all the way.

Our young boys got their first experience of what it takes to win when it counts most. Two games at the price of one. I’m disappointed, but not upset. It’s a long series, advantages, as well as flaws, tend to surface at the end. The better team usually wins at the end. That’s why they play 7.

A few reviews, click here, here, and here.

One game, coin flip, questionable call, Igor was Igor. Nothing to worry about yet.

Bread looked like he didn’t want to or couldn’t shoot to me.

Repost from this morning for all you Chuckleheads

I know most of you boneheads think losing last night’s game was just game 1 and no big deal. But it was. I’ve seen this show before. Fortunately I am more than used to disappointment. I’m dejected but it was expected!

As a former ref I ask 2 questions on the go ahead goal.
    1. Was DeSmith interfered with and prevented from making the save….yes
    2. How was he interfered with? By his own player causing the contact….good goal
Simple as that. Any other explanation is just BS!

Seems like Pits was better able to exit the dzone with limited pressure from the 2nd period onward. NYR was constantly under pressure in their own zone and very rarely got clean breaks out.

Who vacated the front of the goal and left Maklinstein alone for GWG? I think it was Flip. Thought kids played well; esp Kakko as expectation were low.

Bread’s line had the majority of ES scoring chances and sustained pressure. Need more controlled ozone time from Mika’s line.

They needed to manage the game better.

Too much energy expended during the first period came back to bite them in the last 2 overtime periods.

Not gonna fault Chytil for leaving the Addams Family alone in front in 3rd OT. Chytil played a real good game otherwise and should’ve had the GWG 2 hours earlier.

Bread looked frustrated – yet still was dangerous with the puck.

They need to find an answer for Crosby/Guentzel or else this series will not end well for the Rangers

Agree with St Pete. I have seen so much crap happen against the Pens that i knew the goal would never stand. For years defensemen have been pushing the puck carrier into their own goalie and getting the call. it just seems like common sense to me. But that is hockey.
With The Pens players having played 3 times as many playoff games and the coach winning 2 cups; that stuff counts for something. First game of a long tough series and Lingren cannot survive the game. That is not a good sign. Also last but not least. SHOOT THE PUCK. Pens players know to get the puck towards the net in playoff hockey. One play by Fox where he was dead center 20 feet out and tries to pass to Strome on his backhand had me pulling out my hair. Oh Well. On to Thursday and glory.
    Did anyone say must win.

The yoots will learn from this but it won’t matter until next year. One good thing from a Quarter Final exit is they keep their 1st rd pick. I do believe Igor is good enough but the team in front of him just isn’t ready yet. pens are too good at this. I really hope I’m wrong but looks to me like pens in 5 or 6. For all the “kid” talk, 12 of the 19 guys on the ice are over 26 (Copp in July) and have a 1st NHL season between 2010 and 2016.

Though they may not be quite as “old” physically, Chytil had played 253 games and Lindgren/Fox 200 +/- 5. Those three should be considered ‘young’ veteran players at this stage. (Compare: Austin Matthews just 5 months older than Lindgren but definitely not a kid)

The kid brigade is really only Schneider, Lafreniere, Miller and Kakko.

For reference (trying not to count guys who will be 25 in the next month or so)
LAK iced 7 players 24 or younger. Edmonton 4. Calgary 4. Canes 4. TB 3

Or take a team like Nashville – two 25 year olds with under 150 games, another under 100 and another under 50 with three more players 24 or under (though two have similar game experience to Chytil).

  36. Beezle Avatar

Upstate Ranger they lost a lot of key face offs in both ends. And even a fair number that they “won” they immediately gave back.

If you watch closely many of the losses too are not because of the guy at the dot, it is the second guy getting the puck and unable to control it (which I believe is how the stat is determined).

Pretty cleanly captures what have been their major weaknesses all season long, with few exceptions. They d*ck around way too much in their own end and when they don’t, there is seemingly little thought about where they are moving the puck, only that they play hot potatoe and keep it moving.

I only saw one replay and at the time worried he got cut by the skate blade

The defenseman appeared to grab at his left ankle after a collision with Capitals forward Lars Eller late in the Rangers’ 3-2 win Friday in the regular-season finale at the Garden. He got up and finished his shift but hobbled to the bench and did not play the final 2:24.

Coach Gerard Gallant said Lindgren’s problem is minor and he’ll be OK for the playoffs, which begin Tuesday for the Rangers.

“He’s fine,’’ Gallant said. “He’s [taking] a maintenance day. He’ll be out there tomorrow.’’

Learning GG speak: “He’s fine” = day to day. “Day to day” = a week or two, “Nothing too serious” = a month or two. “Pretty banged up” = season over

Most players probably have a normal distribution in regards “good” and “bad” plays – most plays not being too far from neutral and exceptionally bad or good plays being much rarer.

KAM on the other hand is tri-modal with really bad and really good plays happening often enough to be distinct on the wings of the distribution.

  57. TYM Avatar

Other than the terrible call giving them a 5 on 3 and the bogus goalie interference call, I believe that the adjustments Pittsburgh made in the second period onward made the difference. The fact that the Rangers could not move the puck out of the zone smoothly and had no speed through the neutral zone made the difference. Pittsburgh sent 2 forecheckers deep to disrupt the Rangers D to D passes and everything was point to point passes to stationary players or dump out of the zone turnovers……….not unlike the days the red line was still in use for 2 line passes. Meanwhile, the Rangers were not forechecking and Pittsburgh always had a player at the Rangers blue line opening up the ice, and they played their system to a T. My biggest concern about this series was tactical coaching……..Sullivan is very good at it and Gallant no so much. Crosby’s line was dominant after the first period.

  75. Wicky Avatar

Kid line certainly not the only issue in giving up a 2 goal lead, the Trouba penalty to make it a 5 on 3 was a bad play, multiple bad passes that killed potential scoring plays by Panarin, Kreider, Meeka to name a few…plenty of blame to go around.

Rangers blew a chance to go up 1-0 in the series, learn from it, make adjustments, move on, series will be 1-1 after 2.

A lot of thoughts this morning. I didn’t love the lineup last night and as I’ve feared all season (and said here before) the young inexperienced blueline was back on their heels most of the night in regulation once that Copp goal woke the Pens up.

Beezle stole my thunder but yeah Lindgren had something going on during the Caps game. Not sure he can go in game 2 nor do I think they’ll want him to if he can’t be effective.

I had been saying most of the year that we would probably see Nemeth move up with Trouba for the post season which is fine if Nemeth could keep his ass out of the box. The issue it creates is pairing Miller and Schneider. Not picking on either individually but that’s not a pair that works for the post season nor should it be experimented with in the post season.
Feels like maybe GG should have gotten Braun and Hajek some game time over the final stretch to avoid this exact situation.

  81. James G Avatar

As for the officiating, I mean the league just has balls. It’s the worst kept secret in the NHL that the officiating sways in the direction of the Pens but that call on Kakko was the first officiating decision that’s boiled my blood in years. It’s too big a play to just change the call by giving the benefit of the doubt.

  82. James G Avatar
    James G

And Wick- yes. Copp needs to be at 3C and I also think that Goodrow needs to play in Vatrano’s spot. Let Frankie play RW with Strome. Goodrow plays the needed style way too well to stick him on a 4th line. Hunt has his warts but he’s a work horse. They need Motte back as soon as he can go.

  83. James G Avatar
    James G

Exactly. learn from it, make adjustments, move on. Consider this baptism by fire for those without playoff experience which is a good thing. Much like when Staal and Girardi and company were young and inexperienced they’re going to screw up, make some plays, lose and then learn, mature and improve. Just how it works.

I don’t know, ILB… Reaves can’t keep up either but he doesn’t take penalties the same way. Makes sense to pair him with Trouba but their penalty killers will need an iv after every period if they can’t stay out of the box in this series.

Bobby, what was infuriating was the way it went down. Crosby caught on camera whining to Sullivan, So Sullivan challenges and the refs review it and it’s almost instantly called back. ILB,
I for one am certainly not calling the series. My philosophy is that by the mid point of OT1 it’s usually anyone’s game. My critique is based off of regulation where I thought the Rangers dominated until Copp made it 2-0 then got put back on their heels, started getting away from the style they were playing and some of that ticky tacky stuff began to leak into their game while Pittsburgh threw it into another gear.

I said it after the last regular season game between the two teams- For an older team the Pens have plenty of speed and transition out of their zone. The Rangers are just faster. But that doesn’t mean that they can get away from the other parts of their game that make them successful. I trust in GG to make the adjustments needed including the onces needed in himself

Doesn’t matter though if the rangers don’t blow a 2 goal lead and fail to go for the jugular early and often. The rangers lost the game. One team made adjustments at the first intermission and the other took its foot off the gas. They put themselves in a position to let officiating (right or wrong) dictate the outcome of game instead of just keeping their foot on the gas.

Sure, NYR could have played better. But the truth is they lost the game because of a really questionable reversal. As others have said, it’s a goal on the ice, so give an explanation why. And agree that the reversal came so quickly compared to other calls in similar spots at a similar point in the game. And also agree that Dumoulin took DeSmith out of position more than Kakko did. If Kakko scores, MAYBE you make the angle not changing argument. When his own defender knocks him out of the crease, too bad.

Loved the KID-line early on. Think they delivered beyond expectation throughout.
Early days, but I really think they need an ugly W tomorrow.

As I stated earlier; the Kid line played well; esp Kakko who surprised to the upside; Laffy was solid, physical early. Didn’t see them as much as the game went into OT, but definitely comported themselves well. Flip leaving Gino in front was bound to happen eventually; kid just doesn’t think D like a 2 way centerman.

The players who need to bring more are Mika, Kreider, Tuba and Stromeo. Not saying they all played poorly, but need those 4 fully engaged and performing at a high level to take this series.

Watched some of replay earlier and they had Schneider playing with Fox for a bit and they looked really solid, very small sample size. Kid looks better each game.

re Kakko goal; if you slow the tape down, his skates are never in the crease until 8 knocks him into goalie and even then, only his trail leg barely hits goalie with 8 mostly taking keeper out of crease. The Kakko pass afterwards was just sick, next level play.

I would have accepted it better if they waved it off on the ice seeing it at full speed. But every time I see it it looks more like a good goal. Dumolin put his shoulder right between the 2 and 4 as Kako is trying avoid DeSmith and pushes him and most of the contact with DeSmith is actually by Dumolin. Kakko just grazed him.
I think they used up too much energy in the first and didn’t have anything left for OT. Hopefully GG and Co. showing them some video and making adjustments today.
Based on GG’s assessment should we be sending Lindgren’s family a sympathy card?

The NHL really is a disgrace. Aside from the Sidney / Pens bias and one sided calls to change the game by gifting the Pens a 5-3 PP to tie the game and the disallowed Rangers winning goal, the NHL(Bettman) still has a grudge against Dolan and the Rangers for Dolan’s letter after the Wilson fiasco last season. It’s hard not to feel that the fix is in.

With that said, the Rangers didn’t deserve to win that game. They played one good period of hockey and there top six “leaders” were outplayed by their bottom six for most of the game. For all the optimism I had before game 1, reality has hit and I don’t have much optimism at this point. I hope they bounce back like they have all season after bad games, but I have been disappointed too many times before to feel optimistic.

Agree with St Pete. After watching every series played between these two teams I have very little faith in The Rangers and some of these players. I would be tickled pink to be proven wrong.
If our top players do not produce tonight against a THIRD string goalie we are done.

From a more strategic angle; GG and his D staff did the team no favors by having their D back up and not press Pitt forwards on breakouts. Pens started to keep a forward back in 2nd period to pick off incoming NYR forecheckers and make sure Marino and the D could make it alive thru the game. So the math is 3 Pens deep in Dzone to retrieve puck with 2 NYR forwards on forecheck.
Then how in the heck did they get so many clear passes out of zone? NYR had their D playing soft in neutral zone which led passes out of Dzone to Pits forwards chipping into NYR Dzone and Pitt forechecking and NYR not managing puck will in the Dzone.
On two occasions, Foxy jumped the clearing pass and it led to 3 or 4 quality scoring chances. Two out of 50 breakouts is not good enough. Safe is death. Need to press up and take some chances as the best D is extended Ozone possessions.
GG was also using Mika and his line for Dzone starts; he took almost 50 faceoffs; more than half in Dzone and 4th line had most of their shifts beginning in Ozone??

Let’s face it; if they can’t beat some tomato can 3rd string goalie in this game tonite; say goodnight Gracie.

Using the goalie situation in Pitt as an excuse is kind of lame. They’ve had incident upon incident over the years with this goalie narrative that we joke and vent about. Oh this goalie that goalie shut them out they should have scored 7 against him he’s a rookie/AHL fodder/No one…fact is: If you’re a goalie starting in the NHL you may not be a star but you can handle your own with a good team in front of you. Didn’t Domingue go like 20-5 for Tampa a year or two ago when 88 was hurt?
Rangers blew a 2-0 lead then blew a 3-2 lead. They got away from the play that was helping them dominate the game up until Copp’s goal. If they adjust and get back to that they’ll be fine.
