Good morning, Boneheads!

No time to write this morning, though I think I did my game review during the game 🙂

Luckily, there are a couple of good articles around written by real pros, click here and here.

FWIW, Maloney thought he was making a”yapping” movement. He’d been commenting on the amount of yapping.

  4. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

BW-that’s exactly what Maloney called it.

He was commenting on the inordinate amount of yapping done by the Penguins (and Washington) during games, and in particular singled out Friedman for yapping throughout the game. Friedman seemed to yap whenever a linesman was nearby, or yapped from the safety of his bench, or after the game yapped as he was skating away. “Boys will be boys” Maloney said.

Didn’t have to be a genius to predict there was a cheap-shot coming and it came with a blind sixe hit to Motte who was flying and frustrating the Pens.

  6. tomk19 Avatar
    tomk19

Wishusin-Boucher-Malesko couldn’t kept saying how frustrated the Rangers were in the 1st period. Great analysis. Maybe try just calling the game and not putting some idiotic spin on it.

With that said, even with 3 wins on 2 weeks vs. Pittsburgh, we know the playoffs will be much tougher.

Boy oh boy if the rivalries against NYI and NJ are dead this one is certainly alive and well.

Law of averages on their side. Rangers have the Pens’ number right now. Back in the pre-letter era they did well against them, letter season through last year they got slapped around a bunch by them and now here we are again.

Simple facts: Pens are fast but Rangers faster. The hooking and holding (that wasn’t called most the night) was for that exact reason.

Secondly, Igor may be in their heads. 4 goals in 4 games against NYR this season and well below their average shot totals per game. Think they had thirty last night though.
Either way that may be a result of defaulting to the extra pass to try to get one by him.

Finally, Crosby didn’t miss the whole season series. So making it sound like the Rangers “squeaked out” a 3-0 win in his absence is a real joke.. ESPN coverage was pathetic last night.

    Tom,
Thankfully Motte didn’t hit his head. Hopefully it’s nothing that will cause him to miss time once the playoffs start. Guessing he’s done for the remainder of the season. Shame too because he’s been great.

I don’t think the Motte hit was particularly dirty. Could have and probably should have been avoided by Anthony not D Angello. Trouba has made a few of those this year where you “theoretically” hold up. Not illegal though.

NYR were upset at a late hit with 1-2 seconds left in the game that I don’t think we got a replay on. Then the scrum, THE tackled and a bloody lip, etc.

Thought the hit on Motte (shoulder?) was clean, but the hit by Boyle on Hunt right afterwards was interference. Boil dropped the gloves and was third man in when Miller lite was slow dancing; he and Miller should have been sent to the bin.

Refs really didn’t manage that game last night which culminating with the Dirty Birds whining at the red line afterwards. Guentzel is their tough guy…

Copp’s pass to Bread was sweet.

Good morning everyone! Is it just me or anyone else just want the season to be over and get to the playoffs? With the exception of hoping Kreider breaks Jagr’s record, I am ready for playoff hockey. Don’t want any injuries in the last however many games are left.
Pens are cheap b*stards. Loved Igor waving or motioning to them at the end.

Gravy-I just looked at it again. Motte’s head was down. I didn’t realize the puck was right there. He was in a vulnerable position. Angelo tried to avoid the head. He cut it really close, but agree it looks pretty clean. Hope Motte’s OK.

James – for a leg MRI, sure no problem. But until you’ve had that cage thing on your head and then get crammed into the tiny tube for 45-60 minutes….

  16. Beezle Avatar

The hit on Motte was at worst a split second late (puck away) but not something I would have cried about if no call. Was really annoyed the refs did not give an second man in on Angello.

Sad state NHL officiating is in and well, the league too. Filthy friend said Marchrat had another non-call head shot that knocked a guy out?

“We’ve played with a depleted lineup almost every time against them,” Jarry said. “We will have some guys coming back who will add to our lineup and help us. I think it will be a good matchup.”

Quite honestly, I hadn’t even considered whether the hit on Motte was clean/dirty. Only problem I have with it is how it sidelines someone who has been really good for the Rangers since the deadline. Nothing controversial just sucks. Plus I think I jinxed him a bit calling for a shorty..

Was checking man power games lost. To see if Pitt missed a lot, and I discovered that the Islanders are in the top 5 least games lost. With all their excuses I thought for sure they would be close to the most games lost. That, by the way, is Montreal by a large margin.

I stayed up late and watched it on espn+ On Demand. There is nothing in hockey I enjoy more than watching the Rangers beat the pens.

Losing Motte sux he added that tenacity and speed to line 4. He was giving the pens fits. The Angelo hit may not have been illegal, but it certainly was retributive.

    Friedman needs a beat down.

I know it’s been mentioned here that Chytil has made improvements. My opinion, he adds very little to the 3rd line. If Laffo-Busto is going to be more productive he needs a pivot that can distribute the puck. The Minx has Spoken!

Panerin, Zibanajad, Kreider, Goodrow are all locked up.

Hunt and Reaves have another year on their deals.

Lafreniere and Chytil have another year before becoming RFA’s,(I think Chytil will be gone.)

Kakko, Blais and Gauthier are pending RFA’s. (I think Gauthier is gone)

Strome, Copp, Vatrano, Rooney, Motte and McKegg are all pending UFA’s.

Strome and Copp have understandibly been the focus of speculation for next year, but Vatrano, Motte and Rooney will be interesting. Would love to keep all 3 and have Blais back, but doubt that’s even remotely possible. Their playoff performances,(the healthy onces), will figure into the cost to resign them.

On the fence about TB or Pens. TB is not the same team they were the past two seasons but we all know how they seem to get magic pixie dust in the playoffs.

I worry perhaps a bit more about the Minxmares especially if they get a bit more healthy. The games were mostly tight and there is a little more familiarity and nastiness. And if we were to win the series, think we would come out more banged up.

    Good morning, Boneheads!
One of the reasons I’d worry about playing Tampa is Big Cat, the guy who’s been the best goaltender on the planet for 4-5 years, and now has 2 SC rings and one Conn Smythe. Shesterkin has been better this year, but Vasilevskiy can heat up any moment with that experience and still being only 27.

  75. TYM Avatar
    TYM

I prefer to finish first and take on whatever wild card team they would draw. The Rangers will beat Boston and can beat Tampa. The absolute worst outcome would be a first round loss to Pittsburgh. Finishing first and hosting the first 2 rounds would help them get to the conference finals. For a change, they have an advantage at home.

  78. James G Avatar

Vasi has been the deciding factor for Tampa more often than Hank was for the Rangers teams of yester-year. He was the difference in the last two ECF and he’s been a major reason that they’ve won back to back Cups. In my opinion, when we start looking at this Rangers team and contemplating what they can do in a playoff type setting the first thing I ask is which of these teams in the East could very likely take 4 out of 7 games from them?
The other question is which goaltender could outplay Shesterkin in a 7 games series?
From that persepctive I personally think Tampa is least preferable as a first round match up.

  79. James G Avatar

    AA,
It’s game 6 of the ECF, Rangers are killing off a penalty with a 3-2 lead and 4 minutes to go in a road game. You can have either Tony D or Schneider out there for the PK. Which one do you want in our end?

Schneider, if it’s a choice between those two. Tony D, however, didn’t look out of place defensively. Pairing Tony D with Schneider would’ve made a more than formidable 3rd pair (if not necessarily a “woke” 3rd pair 😉

Which of them are you putting to their left side for the first time in their career to make the pair work?
Would you want Tony D out there over Trouba? Over Fox?
Not trying to be snarky I’m just saying that in the grand scheme of things yeah Tony was a defensive liability as compared to the other RHD options this team had. And while he’s on a bargain deal this season he’s eventaully going to have quite a price tag that wasn’t going to get paid no matter who our GM (or back up goalie) was at the time.
Rangers have the second ranked PP in the league this year so the fans that claimed they needed him for the PP don’t have that angle anymore. Seems like some (not you) but some are upset with the trade because of things that don’t pertain to his hockey capabilities. Which is no better than wanting him traded because of things that don’t pertain to his hockey capabilities IMO.

Rangers were paying DeAngelo $4.8 AAV. (Carolina currently paying him $1 M) Schneider’s cureently at $925,000.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Carolina does with DeAngelo who’s a pending RFA with arb rights. Carolina has a reputation for being cheap. You also wonder how much term he gets. Whether he gets signed a long-term or 1 year deal; whether he signs for $1 M again(he won’t) or $7 M, stays in Carolina or gets traded for a King’s ransom, the drama will explode here. With Trouba, Fox and Schneider on the right side, DeAngelo was never going to be here long-term. Gorton made a mess of the whole thing and he deserved to be slammed for over-playing his hand. I’ll be interested to see what happens, but Gorton and JD are gone. Quinn is gone. This summer, Georgiev will be gone. Agree with St. Pete, time to move-on.
