How did they do?

Published by

The day started with some pretty bad news. Igor Shesterkin and Pavel Buchnevich got into car accident while driving in Brooklyn at around 8:30 pm on Sunday. Luckily, both are relatively OK. Buchnevich was “shaken up” ( the arriving paramedics got a good lesson in advanced Russian foul language ), but sustained no injuries. Shesterkin sustained a non-displaced rib fracture and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. It’s unfortunate, because he was on his way to breaking every single goaltending rookie record, and possibly on his way to propelling NY to an unexpected playoff appearance this year. The good news, there is nothing long term. It remains to be seen if this changes anything in terms of how this team has been playing lately.

The rest of the day was positive all the way. Kudos to JD and Gorton. Because what they did was about both the present and the future. The first move was a sign given to the team, and the fans, that this re-stew is over. They “acquired” the best available player ( by a margin) at the deadline. He would also, arguably, be the second best available forward in July.
Make no mistake, it’s a hometown discount. Kreider would get 7 years in July, and without a doubt, he would get what Hayes got, at the very least. I’d argue that if he had a good playoffs run elsewhere, the money would be much, much higher. Both he and the team made sure this works. Both got what they wanted.. Kreider wanted a term, NY wanted the money. That’s how you make it work. The Rangers go on now, and long term, with formidable top 6.

The second move was more about the future. The future of salary cap management, that is. I admit, I’m very impressed with the Skjei trade. Gorton used their depth on defense, left side especially, to clear $5.25M of cap space for the next 4+ years. Brady Skjei is a serviceable 2nd pair D-men, but he would start falling behind on their depth in the next couple of years, if not next year. Lindgren is already above him, and they have more kids available to step in. K’Andre Miller is expected to fight for the spot next season, Hajek was getting there before he got injured. And they have more in their system. I believe it does weaken their left side short term, but this was more about the future. That Gorton got a first round pick in return AND was able to clear up his salary in the process is very impressive. The pick is Carolina’s first rounder. If Carolina has two first round picks, the Rangers get the lower one. After all the confusion, I’m pretty sure that’s how it was worded while presented to the league. If some CBA junkies want me to explain this, I’ll do it during this thread.

I went back and looked at my Sign EVERYONE exercise. They needed to clear $7,365,633 to re-create their current roster. Between Kreider and Skjei this number went down to 1,615,633. This makes Gordon’s job much easier this summer. And much more likely that he can make some changes to improve this roster.

I’ll update this post when Carp comes up with his own evaluation. And if any other details emerge.

Click here to read Carp’s new article.

UPDATE: Click here to see the official breakdown of Kreider’s contract. Briefly, it’s a front loaded contract, he gets $25.5M of its total value of $45.5M during the first three years, mostly in bonuses. He also has a full NMC through 2023-24 season. After that, until the end of this contract, he gets an NMC ( can’t be buried in AHL ) and modified NTC with 15 teams on his no-trade list.

Today’s moves were exactly what I had hoped for. Good job by Gorton. Shame Igor had to get hurt. Even if we don’t make the playoff’s we are a better team today and in the near future. beginning of the year we looked like like a first class dumpster fire. Now we are starting to look like a team. I’m in such a great mood I won’t even as for Linndy Ruff’s head.
    Onward to long island.
    LETS GO RANGERS

My sources tell me the 6.5 has nothing to do with a hometown discount. $4.625 is for The’s 82 nights of skating and shooting and things, and the remaining $1.875 covers weekly driving lessons for Shesterkin, who couldn’t understand his previous teacher. Excellent asset management.

I think Gorton and crew deserve high praise for today. I felt even better watching the press conference with Gorton and JD as they seem to be on the same page and meshing well , though it obvious that JD the boss.

Kreider got his total $$ value over $45M

Be interesting to see how the current LD are being slotted in the lineup and the prospects on the farm. This also may mean Staal is here for yet another season, but Smith should be an Asst to the Asst coach in Hartford next season.

Skjej played well enough lately to make this trade a possibility.

Though, speaking of inconsistencies that people harper on all season with the trade Kreider camp, Skjej was the most inconsistent D. He plateaued into what was an overpayment that was difficult to predict. If he were 3 mil AAV we definitely keep him. But the cap space this move provides is worth its weight. To add a 1st rounder is a yuge Cherry 🍒 on top

Hope hank in meantime can add to his win and shutout totals for a big run to go out in a blaze of glory carrying the team to the playoffs

It’s the draft lottery. They start at 15 and work their way down.
(Toronto and Carolina both still haven’t been called)
Pick eleven goes to ….. (not toronto)

Huge cap hit…gone…hello #1 and with this draft chances are good….if they don’t draft someone residing in the Gobi desert….they will get an impact hockey player…..Today was a good day.

Without Igor, the order is a little taller, but I think they’re up to it.

I think the Kreider reversion is certainly possible. Not that an average of 22 ish goals a season is bad, it’s also why I wouldn’t have overpaid for him and figured 6.5 per was about right. Glad Gorton took my advice 😜because I’m happy Kreider is still here.

As far as SkjeL, decent 2nd pair nhler imo, good return on him and more importantly cap space from an organizational position with depth.

Athletic giving Carolina an A and the Rangers a B (overall trades). We’ll see if Skjei turns into the addition by subtraction so many were crowing about. On paper (and on the wild streets of Brooklyn) the Rangers got worse in the short term today, but glad they didn’t get sucked into the win-now trap and continue with the patient build. And they could still get lucky this season.

Again, I think the notion developed among fans that Fast is going to get 3-4 million dollars on the open market is pretty insane. What it shows me is that they like him, he likes being a Ranger and they’re confident that they can retain him for a number that’s appropriate.
If I’m wrong, I default to my past posts about how he’s an important piece but certainly not irreplaceable.

As a team we are very slightly worse than before the deadline, big BUT is that we have kept our core together and have the chance to improve drastically over the next year or two. The players we’ve drafted made Skjei expendable, they also made Kreider a necessity as we have little forward depth. I’d expect a lot more F’s selected by us in 2020 & 21 draft

can’t see anyone having offered a 2nd for fast (even a 3rd would have been rich for me as an opposing GM), but if they did he shouldn’t still be here. I’d be fine signing him to a 2yr deal over the summer, but basically at the same salary or minimal increase as unless we clear a lot more salary we can’t afford to allocate more cap space to him

  71. simonkimbrell Avatar
    simonkimbrell

You can bet there were offers on Fast but no market for him thanks to other deals for bottom 6 forwards only getting a 4/5/6/7 round pick – luckily teams needed defensemen (preferably with term) to play 2nd/3rd pair and that makes this summers cap squeeze an awful lot easier. If Smith can make a decent cameo we might even be able to flip him in the summer with some salary retention to make room for K’Andre, Rykov or Hajek (maybe even Robertson/Nils)

If you look at what depth forwards went for yesterday (and fast is a depth forward on most teams), it was 4th and 5th round picks (goodrow thé exception). There is no reason for the rangers to move him for that.

You either give him a similar aav or a bit less (depending on other cap moves) or you let him walk, not the end of the world either way.

If you look at this team down the road a bit, they are in really good shape. They could use an NHL ready top 9 forward, but even the forward depth has gotten better. The Gauthier addition was a good one, and I’m curious to see what happens with Barron. Hitting on a guy like Barron would be huge. Also from what I can gather with the little information I can find, it’s sounds like Kravtsov is really coming on. A good point was brought up regarding finding trouba a partner from outside the organization.

And it may be the reason some folks are saying finding that guy may have to wait awhile.

    The expansion draft.

Right now we’re straight with trouba, deangelo, and lindgren (keeping earning it tank)

But if we traded for an established LD with term, we’re back to having 4 guys for 3 spots. So unless it’s a young stud who exempt, or a guy with one year left on his deal (ahem, brodin) who is organically exempt bc of his UFA status (to which we re-sign him after the draft), or a stopgap we wouldn’t mind being claimed. It may have to wait until after the expansion draft. June/July 2021

Mind you, brodin can force his hand to the rangers in the same way trouba did.

You can trade me anywhere next year, but I’m a pure rental. And you’ll get a rental return.

If you can trade me to the Rangers who I will sign with, and then will give you the added premium other teams won’t, bc the rangers would like him in the lineup/organization next year.

The same way the Rangers sweetened the pot alittle for Winnipeg (trouba) and Carolina (Fox) instead of just holding them over a barrel. Fair deals are the best. Make everyone better. Makes for better hockey to watch. Makes for more trades in the future if both teams ‘win’ trades

Oh and I want to know exactly how much of the proceeds Dundon makes off these Ayres/canes T-shirts’ go to kidney foundation. I hope to heck social media journalists hawk dundon on making that little revenue stream transparent.

The very 1st tweet about, dundon made clear Ayres would get some royalities and proceeds would go to a kidney foundation, BC they were pushing it through to take advantage of the opportunity.

What Ayres can 3% royalties and 10% donation to a kidney fund and dundon pockets the rest.

    That would be a joke

  141. jpp Avatar

Wicky, NHL.com lists Lemieux with Kreider and Zibanejad. I’m worried about his conditioning, can he handle that many minutes? I’ll let Trotz worry about his defense and their jockstraps with Lemieux and Kreider (who must be pumped up after signing) going after them behind the net.

Islanders fans are jumping through the roof that Pageau signed with them immediately… that Parise waived his NTC to try to join them, that Andy Greene, Captain of Mighty NJ Devils, waived his NTC to join them…

    Lamoriello was great—for the Devils.

Islanders fans need to be reminded that Sweet Lou lost out on Tavares, lost out on Panarin.

He overpaid for Pageau. An R1, and R2 for a decent player having a career year. Nice work by the Senators.

He also overpaid for 36 year old Andy Greene. And probably would’ve paid too much for Zach Parise, age 35, who has a crippling contract.

So yeah, Lou hired Trotz when serendipitously became available, so there’s that.
