This now official.
First, bad news. Buchnevich and Shesterkin got into a car accident in Brooklyn last night. The latest news on that: Buchnevich is shaken up, but no injuries. Day to day. Shesterkin, who was driving, sustained a non-displaced rib fracture and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
And, the good news. Chris Kreider and NY Rangers have agreed to a 7 year, $45.5M contract with AAV of $6.5M. I want to emphasize “have agreed” because, clearly, both sides made sure this thing works. NY got the AAV they wanted, Kreider got his term. That’s how you do it if you want things to work out for both parties. Touche!

Won’t Hank retirement bring in $8.5M
In cap space?
Trouba gets better cause he doesn’t keep hanging out with his security blanket in skjej.
Skjej playing better last couple weeks helped us unload him. He was using speed and size better. And carolina saw him live playing his best. Good riddance to that cap hit. Can’t believe we got a 1st rounder!!! Thought we would need to add sweetener to offload him.
Fast will get an extension this summer and probably remain right where he is in the lineup next season. Even if Gauthier or Kravtsov make the team….
Skjei will help us even more now to get that playoff spot
Yes, Papa. 3 million would open in the event of a buyout.
Right?
From what I’ve seen it’s not lottery protected so hope the canes miss the playoffs and there pick goes higher.
I am happy with the day’s outcome. Surprised Fast was not moved, especially with Barclays Goodrow bring back a first rounder. Now, we can hope for a Carolina playoff miss and have another lottery pick.
Great deal to shed Skjei. No politics.
I’m just saying since howden is playing the wing. Let’s say they prefer Pepe, but Pepe’s gonna come in at 2m or something.
It could be howden included in a deal to make room to sign all 4 you brought up.
I was specifically think about Pepe and howden with my response
did they get Cane 1st rounder or the one they had from Toronto ?
Trouba played better in Peg without Skjej. So I’m not worried about this affecting him. He’s a big boy. I think he will be more business and maybe can help the youngins navigate becoming pros.
The theory exists that Skjei brought down Trouba. Let’s see how Trouba improves without Skjei.
Believe there is a retirement penalty which leaves a $3M saving if the King dethones
Skjeis first two months on the team were the best he ever played
Rangers missed out on their most important need…..acteam chauffuer.
Rumor is…could have been had for Staal,Smith and Haley….we would have had to eat some salary though.
James
He’s not labeled The Legend for nothing?
Here are the important questions on the pick.
Is it the leafs or ‘canes?
Is it protected?
To what extent?
Are there conditions that allow Carolina to wait until the draft lottery to determine which pick they want to give up?
Top pair
Smith…Trouba somebody help me?
Canes = the new Coyotes
I can’t believe kreiders cap hit raise was under 2mil
That is phenomenal job by both parties.
He wants to WIN here
He will be a lifelong ranger. If he brings us a cup he gets his sweater on the rafters.
JFK’s wanker was often exploring caves and such.
I really hope for that franchise that the coyotes find a way into the playoffs. Or that Hall decides to sign long term in the desert
Not sure about this, but since the Toronto pick is conditional, I believe NYR will be receiving the Canes pick.
Ironic part is that the 1st rounder they’ve acquired will be earlier in the first round than just about any they would have gotten for Kreider had they dealt him to a team that was reportedly interested.
Unless the Canes go on a run similar to last year which is highly unlikely.
Brian Burke on Kreider
“Only kid I had in the program that did homework in the lunchroom, cause he was at Boston college”
Canes did so much today, but they still only have Mrazek/Reimer in goal. Not sure this was the best time to go all-in. Wonder if they targeted Lehner.
Should have just been practicing his signature ehh cregg 🙂
You’d have to think they got a good prognosis on mzarek right booby
Surprised the Avs didn’t acquire a goalie, Booby
Mzarek injured his right booby?
Hand it to Gorton today. Not only did he handle the Kreider thing well (despite the sheer panic from most of you)
but he cleared cap space from a position of strength as some of us said he would and even without the “big haul” some thought Kreider would bring back, they’ll still have yet another year where they’re picking 2 first rounders ranging within the top 20ish overall this June.
Maybe it’s time to stop killing him because of the Shattenkirk ordeal…
LOL…forgot that both of those guys got hurt in the same game. I kinda meant that neither of them are very good.
Barring late trade postings, as things stand you’ve got the first two lines intact (depending on Buch’s shaken-upedness) Lindgren or DeAngelo promoted, and Smith/Staal for the moment, both of whom were good those couple of games, Staal one the best 3D in the league. And a strong if no longer unbeatable goalie tandem. I’d go with DeAngelo and tell Trouba to practice staying at home, but more to keep Lindgren and Fox together–Lindgren is probably the better choice, but DeAngelo/Fox? In any event, the unlikely playoff push is still on, even if Trouba is in tears.
The only move or lack thereof which I would say is mildly stunning was Toronto not upgrading their blueline.
Dubas should be on the clock if and when they’re another one and done this post season. That is if they make it at all.
did Igor already have a drivers license?
Gosh I hope he’s ok
He was in the midst of some amazing rookie records. Too bad he couldn’t keep the momentum going.
With this draft being rumored to be very deep, you might find a few teams happy to trade out of a top spot. Having two 1’s in this draft is huge either way.
As to Kreider, he moves from home-town favorite to home-town hero. Stitch that C on him pronto. I wonder what he paid his agent given how many millions he likely left on the table if were to have sustained his current level to the end of the season with a new [and likely playoff] team. It will also be interesting to see if any of the proposed trades for him come to light as GM’s do their PR about whom they refused to part with. I also wonder if he will be receiving a terse note from the players’ union, which generally likes to see its members grab top dollar 🙂
Norm, I don’t think it’s very likely that Tony D will switch over to the left side for the remainder of the season. I think he’s probably staying put with Smith on his left and Lindgren/Staal slide up in the lineup.
While no Smith > Smith anywhere is best case scenario, I don’t mind having him on the blueline this time of year. He may be a mediocre defender, but he can play with an edge back there which is what they’ll need the rest of the way here.
I have come around a bit on the Kreider extension. It has the potential to go sour but the dollars are low enough that it won’t be completely crippling.
I love the Skjei trade.
Completely flummoxed that if we traded Skeji for a pick that we didn’t also trade Jesper Fast.
Ayres to Carolina for 27th round pick.
Sakic is stingy, wants to fleece GM’s but today GM’s told him to hit the road.
If the offer for Fast wasnt a 2nd Gorton just said no …more money freed up now so maybe he re-signs
James, I thought DeAngelo has been on the left since forever, no? Though I do suffer from mild dyslexia.
James
Colorado did get a goalie, they got Hutchinson
Contract numbers must be close enough with Fast.
Deangelo plays on the right, he is normally paired with staal who plays on the left
Capt Chris Kreider; come get the Stanley Cup!
While his production is higher this season to date, even more impressive was the manner in which he conducted himself during this process. Never needing an emotional rescue like some of his former mates. Guy is a pro.
.
Now he just needs to show his fellow comrades how to use the Uber app….
No wonder you see drop passes that don’t exist.
SN
That would be, Brady SkjeL come get the conn smythe trophy!
Congrats to you and all the Caniacs out there!
I’m not a fan of the Skjei trade generally, given how well he’s played over the last month-plus, but credit to him for bringing a 1st with that good play, and it does clear up signing space. I’ll be keeping an eye on him, to see if he continues to thrive away from the spotlight. Good 4-year Ranger.
Brain fart. Wishful thinking, probably.
Captain Kreider will hoist a cup soon enough. Solidarity, SN!!!!!
The money gets divided, the women get excited, now I’m broke, it’s no joke, it’s hard as hell to fight it, don’t buy it……DONT DO IT!!!!
MsG about to have a press conference with all the important people.
Not sure if MsG or MsG+. I’m dVRing both channels
Tampa really beefed up, smart. They figured out the way to win. Have to be the favourite along with the caps.
Bruins also added a bit of size
Shesty will be a Conn Smythe winner….
You’re welcome
Norm, Kreider should be sending the terse note to the Players Union for accepting a cap to begin with.
Could somebody please thank Wicky, so he can welcome us further? 🙂
On a blog related note…apparently when people “like” a comment you posted it sends an email to your inbox that is linked to your account for this site….I dont normally use that email so I was unaware that happened…ummm it’s full….really full
Norm
That was for you regarding my 4:21
They moved a serviceable mid pair Dman who was in a position of roster strength for an R1 plus Cap Space for front line.
Genius.
Wonder if this paces way for a retirement party for the old guard.
Hank should retire but his coif must be extended. 48,000,000 for 6 years.
Who’s the Einstein who paid Staal all that money with a No Trade Clause? Sather?
Senile old goat.
The clouds have parted. THE Kreider is staying put.
Shesty only making $925M. Probably driving an old beater. 🙂
Goodrow and a third got a first from Tampa
Are we sure hank wasn’t driving the car that hit Igor and buch?
If it was a Maserati, could be Hank.
Press conference on now
Maserati Very overrated car!
Papa, please send me one (1) overrated Maserati. Thanks, man!
I’m so likeable, Wicky, that I have to clear out my fake account every month or so. Or every decade, one of those.
Kreider was tight lipped and never let it impact his play. He did play like a New Yorker. Either him or Mika has to be the captain next year. It’s about time they had one. I pick him because we know it won’t change how he plays. Mike seems a little more emotional.
I like what Gorton did today. Other than goodrow, depth forwards were only getting 4th and 5th rounders on the market so I think it was a smart move keeping the couch for that price.
I am waiting for the official announcements on both Kreider deal ( structure), and Skjei trade. You may have to deal with this long thread till tomorrow morning anyway if I don’t find any time to write a new one.
I’m pretty sure the conditions on Toronto’s 1st round pick to Carolina was it moves to 2021 if it’s in the top 10. Carolina can’t trade it. So it’s Carolina’s first rounder for Skjei.
I believe it was a good steady, non knee-jerk day. Hope in 5 years or so the blog’s not having to try & move a big bag of K.
LeBrun just posted that I was wrong. According to him, Carolina will decide which pick to keep, and will choose the higher one. I got to look in CBA then.
I guess now’s a good time to say a big Thanks to you Ilb, So thanks for keeping the blog going over the years. Also, thanks to Doodie & all the other HAV helpers
ILB-Can we confirm that there’s no salary retained on Skjei’s contract?
I’m having problems understanding this. Unresolved picks can’t be used in any trades. I know that for a fact. Isn’t this an unresolved pick? What if Carolina picks at 8 and Toronto’s at 9? The Rangers get bounced to 2021?
It’ll work itself out. Rangers will have a similar pick regardless of which it is.
Two teams very close in standings neither likely to go on a run this post season.
Ilb
I’m no where near the expert you are but pretty sure they have to use their pick in the trade because the Toronto one has conditions attached
I bet the conditions are so complex that it shakes out like this.
The pick is undecided after the draft lottery, so long as Toronto isn’t in the top 10, Carolina gets to choose to keep the higher pick.
However if toronto ends up in top 10 draft slots, the rangers will either get carolina’s 2020 1st or (another wrinkle to the conditions) does Carolina get to wait until the 2021 draft lottery to see if they or Toronto’s pick is higher and then give the rangers the lower pick again
Gorton gets major props for todays very astute moves. He is showing himself to be a top notch GM. The rebuild is nearly rebuilt…..and yet he continues to add #1 picks. Ya gotta love it.
Obviously as ranger fans we hope that if Toronto is in the top 10, the conditions state we simply get Carolina 2020 1st.
But conceivably Carolina could have conditioned it to the point if Toronto pick this year is in the top 10, meaning Carolina gets Toronto’s unprotected 1st in 2021, that they still get to choose the higher of the two picks based on 2021 draft lottery.
We could be waiting till next April to even know where the pick is.
In my 1st post I meant to say
‘The pick is undecided UNTIL after the draft lottery.’
Gorton did great. His best (non) move was not trading Georgiev just for the sake of trading him. He can maximize his return, if they do indeed to sell Georgiev, at the draft.
Hopefully Hank goes out to the glue factory after this season and thus no reason to trade Boy George.
That’s what I was explaining above, Wicky. We’ll wait until we have more info.
All these years later and Phaneuf’s hit is still forcing the Rangers’ hand on D decisions

@drosennhl
To be clear because it can get confusing, the Rangers are getting a 2020 1st round pick from Carolina for Brady Skjei regardless. It’ll either be the later selection of the two Carolina owns (it also owns Toronto’s, which is top-10 protected), or it will be Carolina’s own pick.
I got it now. Makes sense. The Rangers are getting Carolina’s 1st round pick. If Carolina has two picks, the Rangers get the lower of two. If Carolina has only one pick ( Toronto gets their pick back), the Rangers get it.
Saw that, TomK. Bottom line is, Carolina couldn’t include Toronto’s pick in the deal because it’s unresolved.
Unresolved Pick: Difficult to remove Booger.
Dubinsky was a master of that, Coos
Nice day. As GM–still wondering why they haven’t hired me yet–I would have traded Kreider and kept Skjei, but they got a nice home-town deal and who knows yet what they were offered, at least initially, by other teams. Skjei bears watching, I think, if only out of curiosity to see if he keeps his current good form going, and it’s not clear the Rangers D will be able to keep playing as well as they have lately, even if Smith impressed in his recent cameo. My favorite part, which reflects badly on me–I love it that Brooks got it wrong by jumping too soon. Never been a fan of that particular writer.
Mister Ab-Norm-al sez sack THE and keep Shay.
Was Igor driving Mr.Happy to the airport, found out that his trade fell through, and actually was the one making a Uie? We’ll never know.
Would you explain your rationale on wanting to trade Kreider and keep Skjei, Norm?
I’m not a fan of many of the Rangers writers. As it turns out, Shayna Goldman broke the Skjei trade news, she has more sources than Carp, who’s been trading Kreider since the offseason.

@vzmercogliano
Also, as you can see on @CapFriendly, the Rangers don’t retain any of Skjei’s salary. The full $5.25 million AAV for the next four seasons belongs to Carolina.
That’s crucial cap space for #NYR, particularly for next season. #NHLTradeDeadline https://twitter.com/vzmercogliano/status/1232103766284959746
Saying for sure Shana broke the news is like definitively saying Dewey beat Truman.
so if both Tor and Canes miss the playoffs (which isn’t impossible) and say go 1-2 in the lottery Rangers get the canes pick?!
I am very happy with the outcome of the day’s activities, other than the car wreck. The Rangers have done very well here. Cleared space, re-signed a unique talent and can still run at the playoffs. It leaves all sorts of possibilities on the off-season as well.
Only neggy is Staal’s ongoing 5+ million.
I don’t care in the least how the former rangers perform.
I wish them well, but I’m rooting for the laundry.
I guess if I wanted to play the I told you so game with former players, it’d be worth keeping track but I don’t usually pay attention to previous players (didn’t about Graves until someone pointed out his plus minus lol) unless someone brings up a crazy stat.
Pete
The way I understand it is if they both miss and say the Toronto pick is 11 and Carolina is 12, rangers get 12.
If the Toronto pick is 13 and Carolina is 11, rangers get 13.
If the Toronto pick is 4 and the canes pick is 3…rangers get 3
Trading Skjei will bring short term pain ( Smith playing), but hopefully long term gain, by way of the cap space, and making room for the eventual arrival of Miller.
goodguy, it’s a question of forecasting performance, the job of the GM. I expect Kreider to revert to his historic form, though it’s entirely possible he’ll stay where he is for a while, and I’ll be rooting hard for it. Skjei had an awful start to the season and reminded us of it a week or two ago, but it if were a choice between the former and the latter, I’d go with the younger player who’s been very good lately rather than the older guy. There are more ready-made replacements for Skjei than for Kreider, though, so I certainly get the move.
As for keeping an eye on former Blueshirts, I root for my former favorites (e.g. Hayes) for not that long and continue to pay attention only insofar as it can be a rough measuring tool for trades, who’s “winning the trade” at the moment. It’s a pointless proposition given that trades can’t be undone, but GMs are judged in part by how their moves work out.
Of course Rangers get no love from the likes of NHL radio personalities.
Carolina and Pittsburgh though- they did phenomenal.
Ironically had Kreider gone in a trade the acquiring team would be getting big props. Rangers retain him and it’s “well….sigh…dead air” so stupid…
As for Skjei, don’t see how anyone analyzing this team doesn’t see that they traded from a position of strength.
My two big questions for next season are
1. Who are the RWS?
2. Who is the LHD with Trouba?
Norm you’re an anomaly if you think Skjei> Kreider long term. We all get to have our opinions though. Kudos to you for originality
Skjei play as of late has been different than the usual Brady Skjei. I didn’t hate it. I’m not somebody who gets all that excited about trading for 1st round picks, but this draft is supposed to a special one. I guess an extra lottery ticket isn’t a bad thing . Skjei would not have been my first choice as a salary dump. I would have done what was necessary to get rid of Smith, even if it cost me a pick and a prospect. Gorton did what was needed to do.
BDL the team commitment to D has me feeling more confident than you about Skjei’s absence.
It’ll take some time to resolve itself for sure.
But it’s the right time of year for Smith’s physicality on D. And if he stinks it up they have options.
Next season I’m hoping K’Andre is here.
CBJ down 2-1 mid 2nd to AhTwo-Ah
James,
Short term, no idea who Trouba partner will be. Long term, it’s going to be Miller.
Trade Skjei and get a R1 or trade Smith with a R1/R2 and get…..??
I think they did the right thing. Hajek, Rykov, K’Andre, Robertson. Confident one of them will slip in next year.
You’re not a ranger fan if you’re rooting for haze, norm, as he plays for filthy. You root for haze, you’re rooting for filthy….bizarre to say the least…
My guess btw is that Hajek comes up to play with Trouba. Tomorrow we’ll see Lindgren and Staal slide up.
That’s E3, not EE
They did do the right thing. I know Skjei has taken his lumps here, I tossed a few shots at him myself, but he is a much better player than Smith. They will miss him for the rest of the season.
What I’m saying is, trading Skjei is not addition by subtraction.
Gorton May be busy over the summer.
Still a lot to work out between Hank, Fast, Buchnevich…RW in general
No, absolutely agree BDL. Honestly I’m happy with their decisions for today. But in light of Shesterkin’s situation I’m putting my playoff dreams to bed
Btw I don’t think the Smith solution stretches beyond 5 games…
Was thinking about the Trocheck thing today. Was trying to decide how he would look between Panarin and Strome. Moot point now.
Bbl
On Smith I would love to have gotten rid of him as well. Trouble is nobody wanted him not even the Rangers! Skjei had to go he was the obvious choice, and he brings back a 1st. I see it as a win win for the Blueshirts! It’s tough luck with the car wreck, but it gives Boy George an opportunity to show he can handle the pressure. If he can great if he can’t we get a better draft spot. The Minx has spoken!
I know a bunch of you guys won’t agree but given the current situation if Georgie has trouble tomorrow I’d give Hank one last opportunity to put this team on his back. See if he has one more run left in him.
Personally, I think he does and I think this is exactly the type of situation you could depend on him for. I could be wrong though.
Hey kids! I missed all the fun this arvo, had to go to the southern ‘Shire. No sign of Frodo or other hobbits, no sign of snow there either, t-shirt weather. And so many traffic lights! Rest of NH should sell it off to Boston.
A mostly good day for NYR. Keeping THE at a very team friendly price, even with a 7th year. I suspect they included the captaincy as part of the deal. I thought SkjeL was a nice kid and good team guy but for whatever reason he continued to have decision making issues (most of the season) so getting the cap space back and a 1st in a good draft is a decent outcome with our depth. And of course, the cherry on top? SN posting here again! Or is it the ghost of SN? Guess it doesn’t matter 🙂
The 32 trades made today were the most ever on trade deadline day.
Should we be concerned that Igor and Pavel were in Crooklyn looking for blini while driving Igor’s old Zil? Someone in management has to look out for these kids!
Ghost of SN or a Slimer?
NEW POST
“Saying for sure Shana broke the news is like definitively saying Dewey beat Truman.”
Hey, Coos- No politics! : )
