Shhh….Carp is working

Published by

Good morning, boneheads!

There are TWO new articles by Carp, both posted this morning. Yup, I did say TWO

This one is an exercise they did at The Athletic about imaginary “contraction draft.

The second one is about Ben Prentiss, the guy responsible for keeping these lazy bums who play in NY in shape.

    Morning ILB and all,
Question: I haven’t heard any talk about Jimmy Vesey or Alex Kerfoot or Will Butcher type college free agents who went to college and didn’t sign with the team that drafted them becoming available. We’re coming up on the anniversary of the Jimmy Vesey signing. Is that not a thing anymore or are there just no interesting candidates this summer?
Pretty sure I read Jimmy Fox would have become a free agent next summer if he returned to Harvard and we hadn’t traded and signed him.

I think we are going to starting seeing less and less of players getting top dollar and long term 28, 29 and up as the league gets younger. Sure it will still happen, but teams like the Rangers with cap issues will be deadline dumping more often the not. Bye bye Kreider, Bettman’s NHL!

Hammers fan here. Hasn’t been so hot since they “won the World Cup” in 1966, other than a 3rd-place in ’86. Norm. I usually am just stating opinion.

But it seems to me most of what I said was indeed fact about glass

Unless you can point to him taking dumb penalties?
Also I remember clear as day that the team played better with his callup and it was mentioned multiple games in a row on MSG how much he meant to the team after the callup. I also saw him skating pretty well for a tough guy. I wish I had time to pull game highlights of his forecheck supporting the fact that he was not a poor skater and indeed had decent wheels. But I guess since he’s not McDavid fast that that fact is more opinion and debate-able. Which I guess you could say about every single scouting report by professional scouts. Though, fact would be proven if we had a stopwatch in a foot race and 100 comparables since his generation didn’t wear fancy gadgets graphing speed and quickness.

If he couldn’t skate I doubt he would’ve had a job when the league made the enforcers extinct post lockout

  75. Norm Merton Avatar

Well-stated opinion that I disagree with, nothing wrong with that. That Glass was a positive, though, is certainly debatable. I found his overall play to be cringe-worthy and assumed it must have been some sort of locker-room presence that kept him on the roster.

Rather signed Chris Stewart over Glass as he had both more offensive upside and better with the gloves off.
Glass fit AV’s turn the other cheek philosophy perfectly, too much for my taste, but rarely took stupid penalty, he was slighly overpaid with a $1.45M cap hit
    .
One of my fav Glass moments was when he scored a PO goal v Habs or Sens after replacing Butch or some other floater in lineup and the snowflakes were melting before and after…

  80. DaveB Avatar
    DaveB

SN – that goal by Glass was a surreal moment. It was probably one of AV’s proudest moments.

ORF – I like the Glass addition. Good locker room guy, good communicator…he’s a future coach, and a players coach at that. I want a guy who had to scrap and claw and work for every second of ice he got to work on some basic fitness/drills with the young pups. I’d have more of a problem with it if he were running Hartford’s powerplay or something like that, but he seems to be in an appropriate role. Honestly, if he didn’t retire – he probably would’ve been the perfect guy to sign a minor league deal and fill that “Mark Letestu” role that JD kept mentioning.

There was a discussion here the other day in which bdl said that the Mets may be better suited than the Yankees to make the World Series because of their starters. I tweeted similarly about a week or two ago that because of their balance of starting pitching and solid offense that they had a better chance to make the WS than the Yankees whose starters stink.

But I was corrected. The best way to determine a team’s chances to win in October is by the team’s overall run differential in the regular season. And the Yankees run differential is much better.

My take is that teams generally face better pitching in the playoffs than the regular season and what usually happens to the Yankees in the postseason is their offense dries up especially with RISP. Though they have a couple different hitters than usual this year like DJ and Urshela who put the ball in play and use all fields. But I think it’ll be almost impossible for the Yankees to get past the Astros because of the Astros elite pitching and offense.

    Tiki,

I understand everyone wants to hand the Mets the World Series this season due to their 2 winning streaks in the second half. That’s fine, but really whomever is the hottest team in the playoffs will win the World Series. Not necessarily the best, but the hottest.

2 years ago the Cleveland Indians won a major league record 22 straight games and were beaten by the Yankees, whom nearly also defeated the eventual World Champion Astros.

Baseball is a funny game. Let’s see what happens with McNeil hurt.

  90. cooscoos Avatar

Mets have advanced despite their manager.

  91. Tiki Avatar
    Tiki

I wasn’t handing the Mets anything.

And coos is right, they have been disadvantaged this season due to their manager.

I agree that the hottest team will win.

Though I just saw on twitter that the first team to 80 regular season wins has won the WS for the past several seasons.

  92. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

Here’s a thought – the Yankees have been disadvantaged by injuries this season, yet have a had the roster depth to overcome and actually persevere.

Pitching injuries to Severino (staff ace), and Dellin Betances (Ace set-up relief) have certainly taxed the remainder of the bullpen. Jordan Montgomery could have also been a key pitcher this season if not for injury.

And note I’m not even mentioning injuries to the non-pitchers. The rise of players like Gio Urshela, Mike Tauchman, et al have made the position player injuries almost a moot point.

  93. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

The Mets are more disadvantaged by their ownership and management, not only their manager.

  94. cooscoos Avatar

Yes, the Yankees I believe will have suffered the most injuries in terms of man games lost in baseball history by the end of the season.

And I also agree the Mets have terrible ownership/management/coaching.

  98. Bdl Avatar

The Mets have to make the playoffs first, before their starting pitching advantage would come into play. The Yankees have the same problem they have had for quite a few seasons, a lack of frontline starting pitching. The Yankees are built for the grind of the regular season. Their offense just bludgeons you to death. When the playoffs hit, the old adage takes affect, good pitching beats good hitting. The Mets are not close to being as good as the Yankees. It’s really not all that close. 3 games over, vs 40 games over. But put them both in the playoffs, I like the Mets chances better because of the starting pitchers.

  99. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

Assuming the Mets starting pitchers pitch like they have during this winning streak, they’re better than everyone.

And assuming the Yankees’ starting pitchers pitch as poorly as they have during the same stretch, they’re a beatable team.

Problem is, we are not factoring in the quality and depth of the Yankees’ bullpen. That is where they have a tremendous advantage over a weaker pen like the Mets’.

Also – the 2 wins against the “mighty” Nats (also only 5 or 6 games over .500) aside; the Mets’ starting pitching has flattened up against behemoths like Marlins, White Sox, etc.

One injury to DeGrom or Syndergaard, and the Mets are in deep trouble.

  100. Admiral Akbar Avatar
    Admiral Akbar

I think athletes like DJ, Gio, Tauchman, Torres, Gregorious, Gardner, and Hicks will be fine in the playoffs.

This is a different and better team than the one from last season.

  101. Tiki Avatar
    Tiki

I don’t think that always good pitching beats good hitting. Sometimes, it does. Other times it does not. The Red Sox won last year with the best offense in baseball, for example.

I, too, find the Sox offensive. 🙂

  103. Admiral Akbar Avatar

Last year’s Red Sox were just one of those seasons where absolutely everything went right, and multiple players had career years.

Good to hear, ilb. You know I just worry a lot.

Yep, Callaway blew yesterday’s game. But I saw they were up 6-0 earlier tonight. Hopefully they can get back on track.

Seems like much longer than 3 years on vesey. Surprised it’s not 5

Maybe he hasn’t peaked in development only being in pro league 3 years. Some spend longer in AHL. Not to mention, these 3 years being suboptimal team effectiveness. Am ineffective AV coach

Vesey seems like a good kid. No I’ll will. I wish him well. Hope he is a late bloomer. Will always remember him playing after the kick to the face. Tough cookie to play through that
