Good morning, boneheads!
First things first. We got ourselves a team. They play hard, they do not give up, and they understand what it takes to win. And they believe in Quinn’s defensive structure. Full credit to the coach. You could see when they showed his face after the final whistle that it was a very satisfying win for him. A little more about him later.
So when do we start talking about them perhaps not missing playoffs this year? Too early?
Let’s get this out of the way. They stuck it out with Chytil and it’s paying off. I do believe he was that close to playing in Hartford, but then he put in a couple, Buchnevich broke his finger, but also he himself started to get more involved in the defensive zone. And then he scores a goal like last night. Goals scorers goal, used defenseman as a screen, and what a laser! Can you say gamebreaker? I know, too early. But it’s nice to dream we may have one.
The game was boring unless you’re a true fan. I am impressed with Quinn’s ability to adjust within games. First period- not much puck possession, Dalas’ first line buzzing. They adjusted with better puck support and by outnumbering them in the D-zone.
Not much time spent in the O-zone? Don’t let Bishop handle the puck, win board battles. And then they took over after Vesey goal. Third period? They gave Dallas nothing, showed some patience, and eventually took advantage of Dallas playing the night before.
So which player who didn’t buy into DQ’s system/style of play is still here? I don’t think too many. Zibanejad blocking shots and fighting pucks in all three zones? Check. And on and on…
Lastly, Shattenkirk is playing his best hockey in NY when he is paired with Claesson.

Third coach fired this year. I’m glad they didn’t go the recycle route and hired Quinn.
That’s a hell of a win and they are earning my confidence but I want to see them respond and defend their six game home win streak against the Islander. They need to get up for that game and not let them walk in and break that streak while embarrassing them yet again.
Could very easily lose the next three so I’m trying to be cautiously optimistic
all we’re missing for a Cup run is a Johnny Guadreau type 😊
Quinn loves Pee-oink as much as I do.
He really likes Tony D.
I love Tony D.
Quinn will come to love Tony D too.
Jimmy Vesey plays hard.
PB,
The coach played Pionk 25 minutes last night.
Jimmy jumps high. Jimmy jumps very high.
Great post ILB. Agree on all accounts!
I’m loving the way these guys are playing. I keep rubbing my eyes thinking, is this what the Rangers are going to be going forward? Will Chytil be that guy, the gamebreaker we have needed? Will Quinn be the coach to mold a championship franchises? Can I finally retire my signature cliche (cotton candy crew)? Or is this the Twilight Zone?
James, now playing the role of Eric!
Wouldn’t it be nice if Groton could find a college FA with the talent level of a Pee-Oink every summer. Makes up for some of the missed draft picks.
Carp is up, finally! Post updated.
I’d love it if they extended Claesson. Lock him up now – I bet you could get 3 more years @ between 1 – 1.2M per.
Of course – this hinges on them feeling confident that by next year, Smith + Staal (and possibly Shattenkirk) are no longer on the team. If they’re going to ride it out with Smith and Staal through the next two seasons…unfortunately you need to move Claesson to make room for Hajek eventually.
Claesson is playing his way to a higher draft pick when they trade him.
During the first period last night was the first time since he’s been injured, that I thought to myself, they miss Zucc. He has a way in those kind of games. Once they got the game steadied, they didn’t miss him.
Shatty was really good. Maybe he is coming aound and getting back in shape after the surgery. Tony D is a gifted skater and passer and seems to have learned not to make the mistakes that Smith still makes. Another blind, soft backhand pass in his own end last night to no one in particular. Fortunately no Stars were near it either. I am waiting for Christmas to decide if they are for real or not. I will also blame it on the Deep State if the Pens get Hughes.
Freddie Clueger is their best in zone Dman and should be re-upped; only 25 yo; bet DQ and the brass like his game. A real character too.
.
Carp is head over heels in love with Haze. On pace 16-36-54 – is that worth $6.5M for 6 years?
.
The new D structure has allowed the slower D to not chase in zone; night and day from the last 3 years. But remember, AV was a great coach….
There’s a stench coming out of pittsburgh, mysteriously crosby has missed the past 3 games.
Rule of thumb..when a coach says his star player doesn’t have a concussion….he probably has one
James – Especially when said star player has a history of concussions.
good post ILB…team works hard for sure…noticing guys like Hayes, Zibanajad and Shattenkirk are finishing checks …never happened last year. Smith has been inconsistent but made a great play on the Chytil goal
Bdl are you being sarcastic about Vesey or acknowledging how hard he’s worked?
No sarcasm James. He’s been the hardest working forward on the team since day one.
I missed the game last night due to work (I know, priorities). Caught up on the dvr really late.
Started slow, stayed in it. Hell of a goal by vesey. Bit of a lucky goal by chytil considering the angle and location but that’s a goal that hot goal scorers score. I hope the kid scores 60 games in a row!!
I like Claesson quite a bit, he’s the second best defensive d man the rangers have after McQuaid.
Zucc looked invisible again.
Can they please beat the damn islanders?!
Vesey ain’t easy to play against!
Thumping the Azzlanders at home would be big; need to start exorcising those demons and then the Craps on Saturday aft, one can dream…
They nearly beat the Caps last time. Staying out of the box would be a plus against them and the islanders
Zook must feel shorted watching the team win without him. He’s been a warrior and given it all to the Rangers, unfortunately it’s time he gives what’s left to somebody else!
Is there an islander with one goal in his last 90 games? If there is he will probably have a Hat trick at the Garden..
“Oh Islander call up Pierre dippy lo duc with another spectacular goal, Sam. Hadn’t scored since his first college game and that was an empty netter”
Claesson seems like the steady affordable Dman Kevin Klein was. Klein probably a better fighter but less important in this day in age. He has a high battle level and hockey IQ
Dave- agree on locking up Claesson. He’ll be an RFA next summer. Those numbers sound realistic and exrremely reasonable.
ILB- Great opening post.
Three division games in a row coming up, big boy pants time. Tsunami the isles, clean up the filth, & bottle up the caps!
Cool it on Claesson long term, unless they are able to unload Staal, Shatty or skjeil. Lots of lefty D on the horizon.
Hate to say it, but Skjei really isn’t missed right now. Small sample size of games, but he better get his game under control if he wants to stay. Some younger guys coming up could take his spot next year.
Team seems to play better w/o Zucchini.
Trade zucc and shay for Knee Land Her
I got a zucchini….right here
Since it was mentioned, I’ve been paying more attention to Chytil along the boards. Definitely not there yet physically, but totally agreed that he’s a monster with that stick. Once he puts on 20lbs, we might actually have a skill player that can win a wall battle. Howden’s got the same knack too. Rare props to OTBG for finding guys who actually address a years long systematic weakness.
Yellow or green?
And for some reason Strome just looks right in a Rangers jersey. He has only played two games and has been solid. Showed some toughness last night throwing a jab into a guys face. But he just seems like a true Ranger player.
Skjei’s future might be on the fourth line like Stu Bickel
Anyone see Vinny Trocheck get hurt last night? Looks major. Love that kids game hopefully he isn’t laid up too long
Dare I say better defensively without Skjei? Forward group looks better whenever Zucc is out too. Coincidence of course.
Calhob – I honestly didn’t notice Strome out there until late, but when I did, I found him generally good. If Zucc is out for a few more, I’d rather see Strome on Zika’s right than Fast.
James – as bad a hockey injury as I’ve seen in a long time. That’s a career-ender if he’s not lucky. What a shame – seems like a really good kid, and a hell of a player.
Less turnovers , better along the wall when Zucchini is out.
Claesson = place holder. Best defensive Dman on left side. Although you could switch him the the right and he’s going to be the best defender on the right.
I hope Benn texted a thank you to Zib after the game. Could easily have dropped him, cleanly.
Barring injury, I’ve got a feeling (great song) next Dman to sit will be Tony D. Not yet, but soon.
Like VC’s non-smiling face, even after a goal. I think the kid is serious.
I’ve got a feeling that AV will soon replace Torts in Columbus
Tortorella
What a fella
Cap those teeth
They’re looking yella
Chytil is plenty big. He doesn’t need another 20 lbs. so much as a mega shot of will. Not complaining. He grows in confidence by the day.
Chytil needs to chysel out, not Phil out.
I feel bad for the C. You can see how badly it wants to be part of that name
Lias, Fogarty, Freddie and Strome in place of Zucc, Butch, Vinny and Shea; tougher on wall and tighter in neutral zone.
Danny Quinn
Where you been
Earn the win
No more spin
Claessen greatest value to the Rangers is as a trade asset. Locking him up long term would be a mistake.
Papa – a giant pink torpedo
Vinny letters ain’t never coming back . Trade shay and zucc.
Claesson can be valuable long-term, as he’d be cheap even with a raise, and he’s a solid defender and skater who knows his role is ultimately as a bottom-pair guy.
But as I said, it totally depends on their plans regarding Staal and Smith. If they envision Staal playing out his contract (whether they want him, or don’t want him but don’t think he’s movable), then that puts the squeeze on him. If they additionally think Smith will also be here, then Claesson unfortunately will need to be moved for a (solid) pick at the deadline.
I think Staal sticking around is extremely likely. But I do think they’ll make Smith disappear at some point. If there’s a big time forward fire-sale with not much in the way of NHL-ready players coming back, I’d flip Smith for an equally disappointing forward with a similar contract. Which will be hard, because I just went through all the teams and all the caps, and said player literally doesn’t exist.
Alex Killorn is the closest thing I can find to a “forward version of Brendan Smith,” and he makes $100K more per year and signed for an additional 2 years. No thanks. Patrick Berglund in Buffalo makes half a million less per year, but signed for 1 additional year and we don’t need a center. David Backes makes almost $2M more per year, same term, and has a no-movement clause. Montreal’s been known to be stupid, so if they want out from Andrew Shaw, he makes $3.9M for 1 year more than Smith. The last guy on my list…Bobby Ryan. If Ottawa is so desperate to get out from that contract (he makes $3M more than Smith, for 1 additional year), I’d send them Smith if they ate $2M of Ryan’s contract AND threw in a wing prospect.
McLellan out, Ken Hitchcock in as coach in Edmonton. Not that there wasn’t enough evidence against Chiarelli, but Ken Hitchcock? That team is screwed.
3 more seasons of Claessen at 3 mill per, or a second round pick. Which is the better value?
No matter how you slice it, Pickle should be bottled up. He could take over where Sour left off. Stop gherkin him around. He might become our bread and butter on the rear line.
Rangers keep this up and they might look for one or two pieces in order to make a real run. Mannfred Mann is doing what AV was unable to do….teach the kids, play the kids, teach the kids some more. Haven’t seen these kind of cohesion since Torts – and this team has the potential to be much more skilled.
How sickening will it be if the Pens end up with Hughes?! 🤮🤮
Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Lateng and they still find a way to tank!
Not a chance Claesson would command that much per year BDL. The guy is making $700K after being picked up off the scrap heap, AND he’s still a RFA. If someone’s offering an R2 for him, it’ll be because they know they can sign him for $1.25M per for 3 years.
Who said $3M per? Guy is making 700K this season; has never made more than that. The advantage if you trade Staal and/or Smith, NYR can eat some salary knowing Freddie is the replacement. More like $1.5M x 2 years.
Wonder who sits when Shea comes back.
Skjei, Skjei, Skjei what you want
but don’t play games with no defensemen
Take, take, take what you need
but don’t leave the team with no protection

Today, #NYR prospect Vitali Kravtsov was selected to represent the Kharlamov Division in the 2019 KHL All-Star Game.
C3
The pens got the word from buttman! “You guys want Hughes you know what to do you’ve done before and I’ll make it work for you.”
GIF of Kravtsov getting absolutely creamed was just posted on the widget. Apparently he wasn’t looking great skating off afterwards. Yay.
A true sign of Ranger fan paranoia. They are playing well, but, we are all worried about the Pens tanking and getting Hughes. But is it really paranoia when it has happened before?
LeBrun is saying Breadman will get 10 or 11 mill in next contract
Shay must be embarrassed. If not, pack him off.
If Panarin wants 10-11 mil, take a hike, not worth it.
With Hitch in up in Oiler land and Bab kicking tail in leaf Ville, could a battle of the cocks be far off?
Shay skates fast. That’s about it.
Panarin thinks he’s the best thing since sliced Pumpernickel.
Shay skates fast but doesn’t know what to do when he arrives.
Stall often seen in front of opposing goalie, desperately seeking a tipped goal before he dies. Meanwhile, numerous odd man rushes the other way.
we know ….he sux Coos…. that why he’s the only defenseman that Quinn hasn’t benched
Cooscoos can not be happy with last nights game. Staal gets the broadway hat and Brooksie talks him up after the game in his Henrik article.
https://nypost.com/2018/11/20/henrik-lundqvist-sets-tone-for-rangers-by-channeling-marty/
Victory goes to the player who makes the next to last mistake.
So now Panarin is worth Connor McDavid type money? Enjoy Ohio bread boy
Ever notice that when a player is rumored to want to come to NY you find out shortly after that they want about 2x what they’re worth?
Sometimes I think that Hat is a Pity Hat.
Georgiev playing tomorrow and sounds like Skjei is back in.
the rumours to NY are a negotiation tactic. too bad we fell for it.
Have to let him back in. Doesn’t mean he’s learned anything, but one can hope he has.
No sandwich is worth 10 mil. no matter how good the bread is.
Tony D and Mr. Pink should be in every lineup.
Remember when everyone said Stralmman wasn’t going to get close to $3M a year? Everyone, that is, except Papa?
If Quinn takes Tony D out of the line-up I’m going to hold my breath and have a tantrum.
Give stall a rest tomorrow if Shay is to play.
We need a bit of D’Anger. Maybe he’ll grow into a Marchand.
Staal back in the Third Row.
Seemed like a small mistake at the time letting Stralman go, but turned into a BIG mistake.
James,
Panarin is worth what the market says he’s worth.
And I’ll bet McDavid is kicking himself for locking himself up long term in that dumpster fire that is Edmonton.
Edmonton is a major, major embarrassment.
Remember during the summer when some were penciling Pee-Oink as a 6 or 7th DMan?
Tony D. Best skater on the team
Wish D’Anger were 6’5, 230.
This Coach has Haze operating like the Energizer Bunny. Will it last after he signs big dollars, long-term?
Pickles is my favorite nickname in 8 years on the blog.
MR. Pink and Tony D need about 10 Lbs of muscle. Then watch out
Tony D and Mr. Pink have that great spin move.
Haze finally switched to Sativa from Indica and it’s made all the difference
Maybe they were dance partners in Betty’s School of Ballet?
A lot of the success DQ is having validates those who thought the problem was AV but were told by the blue Pom-Pom club that he was great because he lost 2 Cups.
Haze “show me the money and pass me the bong”
AV seemed to show up behind the bench 2 minutes before puck drop then go home after the game only to arrive at the next game 2 minutes before puck drop. Not sure he taught, coached, adapted-in-game, or do anything else that a coach is supposed to do. Imagine what Manfred Mann would have done vs the Kings In 2014 or the Sens two years ago.
This guy might go down as the greatest Ranger coach in their storied history. I find it amazing what he’s getting out of this group a quarter into the season.
Whistle to whistle my azz. This is a man’s game played by men. “Oh Godfather, I don’t know what to do!”
“You can start by acting like a man”
Haze vapes on the bench
Some of you are going to need juice boxes and colouring books in your safe spaces when McQuaid comes back and one of your precious “we are completely overrating these guys like we did with gilmour” sits in the press box a lot.
Bdl when I go to the market I buy the appropriately priced meats.
I remember wondering why AV’s teams never seemed ready to play in the first period. That’s certainly changed
Mr. Pink wins the Norris. Tony D comes in second.
McClellan out in Edmonton. Rumor has it this was due to a clash with newly acquired Ryan Spooner (s)
Where is McQuaid ?
Oilers have a chance to get Quennville and go with Hitchcock. Mayyyybe it’s time for Chiarelli to splitarelli
James
He’s injured.
I heard an interview on tsn a couple days ago that said the problem with McClellan was he was basing the team playing style on mcdavid’s skating speed and the rest of the team didn’t have that speed (nor does the rest of the league).
Clearly a recipe for disaster.
Sounds like an av move, trying to put in a system that doesn’t fit the players on the team.
Yeah but what happened to him, Wick?
lot of positivity and optimism in Rangersland. I say that’s easy during an 8-1-1 streak. Let’s see how everyone goes back to the first few weeks’ complaining and whining about the coach as soon as they hit a little skid. Which, of course, will happen.
BTW, Rangers got to be close to clinching another November Cup.
Fat Guy!
SN
jumping the gun a bit aren’t we? Not even done with November yet. The previous coach did fine until the rebuild started a year and a half ago. Was not a good fit for a younger rebuilding team. Oh I know lets give Torts the kudos for the 2014 finals right? Or lets blame the previous coach for losing to Tampa when 3 of his defensemen were on 1 leg each.
By the Way I’m glad Quinn is the coach and he’s doing a good job with this rebuilding team.
Wicky
McQuaid sat a lot with Boston. He’s not a sure fire top 6 game after game after game.
My brutha, carputha- you be wrong, sing a song:
Final record this year 72-8-2 for a modest 146 points. Don Cheadle goes all Joe DiMaggio on us racking up a 954 game consecutive hitting streak lasting many seasons. THE scores 50 goals, Stormy Daniels nets 40, and Mr. Pink wins the Norris.
I see dead people
AV is the reason our sexy boys lost the Senator series two years ago. Incapable of ever making in game adjustments and an utter failure at developing his younger players.
AV is dead —- long live Mannfred Mann.
Solidarity. Everybody want to see the game on Saturday. Everyone want to keep their children warm….
Rangers are this year’s Golden Knights. Hopefully with a silver cup at the end.
Whiners whine:
https://media.giphy.com/media/iEz6EAQDMVhqo/giphy.gif
Manfred Mann. LMAO.
Fond a clip of AV’s in game coaching…
https://media.giphy.com/media/13t4lOWmeekR4Q/giphy.gif
SN – That dude be sucking serious lemon
AV – chewing-n-clapping. That be what he do.
think he is getting ready to clean the pipes after some spicy food.
Speaking of cleaning the pipes, I dropped a bowl clogger this morning that had me plunging something serious…,
Those of us of a certain age remember juke boxes that had 45 RPM records in them. I recall seeing “Quinn the Eskimo on those juke boxes in the 70s. I also recall what was on the flip side. It was “The Mighty Quinn.” They put the same recording on both sides with different names.
Who’s McQuad? Is he the cast off from Bahston?
Carp showcasing his inner Norm?
Carp it’s almost time for the Pole to come out of the crawl space for Festivus
Rangers got in on McQuad a few years too late
Doubt anyone thinks they’re going to maintain a pace for 1st or even 2nd.
What I’m positive about is the play of guys like Howden and now Chytil along with other young players who are really playing well and working hard
Carp!
Busy day. What’s the general consensus? It’s not good that this team is playing well at the moment?
For the record, I don’t care what they do for the rest of this week so long as they beat the Fishsticks tomorrow
I am a believer in this team
Slow down with Claesson. They have a lot of salary on the L, and a few youngsters on the way. It’s getting cozy on that side as it is.
i was not a fan of trading skjei a couple of years ago but i certainly would now since we are much more loaded on the left side now.
I hope Quinn shakes things up vs the Isles by starting the game with 3 synchronized fights. Who would he tap, though?
Fat Guy –
The 3 baddest rangers are:
1) Don Cheadle. No one wants wants to go with this Utha brutha From Anutha mutha
B) Mr. Pink. Could be the toughest guy in the league.
4) Marc Staal. Nobody knows which eye he sees out of which makes any uppercut he throws more lethal.
We don’t whine. We Single Malt.
King? WTF?
Typical AV with two ugly dudes behind him instead of comely babes.
I knew I liked Jamie Benn, but how did these two never fight?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_hOnXiA9xBU
And clapping like a queen….
Neil is a tool.
I don’t miss Norm 🙁
Alex
Don’t think he’ll play every single game here, but some of the current guys getting overrated by many will be sitting way more than they want them to due to his return.
Long Live King Cooscoos!
My kingdom for a horsie.
Norma and Sittoo will fight anyone who mentions fighting.
lol…
Self righteousness belongs to narrow-minded.
You can’t fight in here. This is a war room!
Norm and ditto -imagine their children ——-Rosemary’s baby types….
Don’t miss those two one iota. No offense to quarks, electrons, protons, neutrons, or other nano type particles.
Wicky – Mr. pink and Tony D might be the best two D men in the league. Name a better duo.
Half kingdom for a half horse…
Some of you, guys like to kick fallen…ah
E3
I can’t, I want to but I just can’t.
They’re the best duo in the league.
Wicky, Mr. Pink will be a beast if you can bulk up. He’s got big balls. Tony D same. I love McQuaalude’s game and I hope he gets healthy. I’d trade Shay and zucc for Evander Kane.
He can bulk up ^^^^
It’s all fun and games until Thomas Hickey has a 6 point night…
Didn’t the islanders end the 23 home game unbeaten streak in the late 90s?
