Great piece, Carp. Especially enjoyed the way you addressed the off-the-board nonsense.

Carp all out on Gorton. Since that’s so, I’m with him. Who am I to disagree with his long hockey history and knowledge? Plus, I want him to be correct.

  5. AnthonyM Avatar

I have a friend whose favorite teams are all out of town and I convinced him to sign up to The Athletic during the last Facebook sale go-arounds. He is upset that there is no Colts or Wizards coverage, but is happy to read about the Orioles and Penguins. No he is not from Baltimore, born and raised in Crestwood.

As a kid he had a crew cut like Boog Powell so he rooted for the O’s and followed up with Baltimore-area teams. I still can’t figure out the Pens, but I can attest he was a fan long before Mario. When I met he told me his first favorite player was someone I probably never heard of – Syl Apps Jr. After schooling him. he learned never to doubt me when it comes to hockey or any sports for that matter 🙂 I should have know he was off when he wore a Gary Rissling jersey the first time we ever payed hockey.

Thanks for the subscrips, kids. … I think Colts and Wizards will eventually be covered. Things are moving fast at The Athletic.

Not saying it’s the case with Lias by any means, but some picks are bad picks at the time they are made given when said player was taken and/or who was still available at that time-see Mcilrath and Jessiman.

Coos – Thank you, but no thank you. If I did cover the Gaels Iona would probably get rid of the hoops program – and I can’t afford to be known as the person responsible for that!

When Iona got rid of the football team I was heavily involved in the Governance structure at Iona (and continue to still be involved). Many a football parent included me in their correspondences to Br. Liguori and other powers-that-be. I also got included on a few messages from parents who had problems with Iona in reference to their child’s financial situation.

If they bring back the hockey team (ha ha ha), then I promise to come out of retirement 🙂

London is gonna be stacked this year. They already added Adam Boqvist and now they add Brady Tkachuk. With Evan Bouchard already on the team. That’s 3 of the top 10 picks in this year’s draft class.

In a defensive battle for the ages, Team Henke prevailed over Team Zucca 10-7 in their charity match in Oslo. Apparently Zucc scored 4 or 5 goals on Hank who resorted to flipping the net over on Zucc’s 4th breakaway in the 1st period (resulting in a penalty shot which Hank managed to stop!). Artie “The Sniper” Anisimov led the way for Team Henke scoring a Hattie on our favorite Finn Auntie Raanta! As you can tell I’m fairly desperate for the hockey season to begin….

It’s a shame our aggressiveness at the 99 draft was such an absolute disaster. The right picks in that situation give you franchise cornerstones.

Though – that was a notoriously bad draft. After the Sedins, the next best player in the top 10 is a toss-up between Tim Connolly (super skilled, super short career) and Taylor Pyatt.

One has to wonder – was it just a bad draft, or was it due to the nature of the pre-cap era NHL. Younger players didn’t get as long a leash, or as many chances to break in, as they do now – the cap basically requires that you play kids while they’re cheap.

Here’s the thing. If you pick 4 or 5 or whatever overall- this is my question. The guy you pass up-this year it was Whalstrom- but whoever you pass on. Is that the guy that is “ranked for that spot”? Or is it the player that 30 other Gms would take if in your shoes? I agree the first situation doesn’t mean much. But differing from 30 other guys in agreement (while bold) usually isn’t smart. In fact it’s usually a result of thinking you’re smarter than everyone. Read: Sather mentality

  73. AnthonyM Avatar

Another great article by George Grimm. It is interesting that he mentioned the car accident prior to the 48-49 season that cost the Rangers four players. If circumstances had played out differently, the Rangers would have been the team that broke the color barrier in the NHL.

The Rangers offered Herb Carnegie a contract to play for one of their minor league affiliates. Carnegie passed because he was going to make more money playing in the Quebec Senior Hockey League that he would in the minors. Had Herb signed with the Rangers odds are he would have been up with the Rangers and ended up making about as much money as he did in the QSHL.

  74. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    James,
You take the guy you like best, and don’t worry about what the other teams think. Wahlstrom fell, and I suspect there was a reason for that. If the Islanders hadn’t taken him, I suspect he would have fallen some more.

  75. Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee Avatar
    Whiskey India Charlie Kilo Yankee

While on paper, Lou and the fishies had 2 guys fall in their laps, the game is played on the ice and I think Detroit really had a great first round.

Both guys the fishes got were overrated imho.

The first team to spit the bit in the draft was Arizona at 5. Hayton is a good player and a first rounder, but I would put him below andersson and howden as far as on ice nhl contributors go.

Think Rotter had decent summary at the end there. Restocked the system but don’t yet have enough high end talent in there. Another high first round pick this year and a couple towards the back which they could package to move up is what we need. If they can then add a guy like Panarin as a UFA they will be even further along.

  87. DaveB Avatar
    DaveB

I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment Pete.

To me, a successful 18-19 season will consist of:
    – tons of ice time for Lias, Chytil, and any other young guns who make the team and deserve to be here
    – More high picks and prospects at the deadline for guys like Hayes and Zucc.
    – Jettisoning of a revitalized Smith for whatever we can get
    – A top 3 pick in 2019.

If we add lights-out prospect with a top pick, one or two more in the mid-to-late R1, and a prospect winger with some upside in a trade…that’s huge.

Though if the consensus is that we’re in good shape but don’t have a high end prospect – the team obviously feels different. I’d say they think Chytil is possibly first line material. And they certainly are projecting Kravtsov to be a star. So who knows…maybe we do have high end talent, but nobody knows except Off the Boardie…

I’d love to find the Rangers ahead of schedule by season’s end, but even if they’re able to sneak into the playoffs, they should still trade Hayes and Zucc for more high picks and prospects.

Based upon the restraint Gorton has shown thus far, that’s exactly what he’d do.

  93. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

In the letter Gorton mentions a makeover with high character and speed guys. It’s exactly the opposite of how to describe Hayes who at times seems unmotivated and aloof but oozes skill. Nice kid. More of a follower and complementary player where 6mil a year would be unwise long term. The one year deal solidified that sense. Will be interesting to see if he got in even better physical shape heading into this year after he recognized the dividends paid with his weight loss and conditioning regimen in past offseason. Playing for a big contract should be motivation

Hope buch shows is he won’t be lazy and the next “enigmatic Russian”. Let’s hope he takes a big step forward this year and in 2019 plays with kravstov maybe with chytil in the middle.

  94. Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) Avatar

Gorton won’t stray from the gameplan. Probably best if they’re competitive then sell again at the deadline and get into the lottery. And if Tampa wins the Cup.

This season is more of an audition than anything else – for the young vets to step up and show they can lead, for the new kids to prove then can hack it at this level and find their roles.

This season should be considered a success based on achieving as many of the following:
Butch, Zika and Kreids proving they can bring it every night and put some points on the board
Chytil and Andersson playing important minutes
Skjei, Smith, Shatty proving they are worthy of the faith shown to them
Getting a good return on Zucc and Hayes
1 or more of the kids grabbing a spot on the team (Hajek, Howden, Lindgren, Ronning)
