I’ll give you this post so that you can continue your sarcastic remarks about them being set on the L side of their defense for years to come 🙂
The draft is over. The Rangers added 10 new players, three of them are 1st round selections:
6 Defensemen- 4 L and 2 R
3 Right Wingers, one playing off wing
1 Goaltender.

How did they do? We will not know until, at the very best, few years from now. One thing is for sure, none of them is making any impact for at least two seasons, if not more. Some never will, it happens every draft. But that just confirms the notion that Gorton isn’t looking for a quick fix. That doesn’t mean he isn’t planning to have a competitive team next year. I expect some trades, and I expect them to look for short terms deals come July 1st. Again, I doubt Gorton will leave a huge chunk of the available Cap untouched. They will spend. As long as they do not get involved in long term deals with players on the downside of their careers who will block young players, they should be OK.
UPDATE: Click here to read Carp’s evaluation of what Gorton and Co. were able to accomplish in Dallas.

They’re going to have to re-design the helmets to contain his ‘fro
If Topo showed up to camp with that pompadour he might clear 6’0.
That’s a big dude – I’m definitely calling BS on him being only 6’3, 200. This guy is going to be a BEAST.
He’s already a unit – by the time he hits the NHL roster they’ll have inflated that to 6’5″ (also known as the Zuke rule) and weight to be 230lbs – he’ll be competing with Kreider in the gym.
So far, net-net, we’ve jettisoned real talent for pie in the sky ‘futures.’ I, by myself, could have accomplished that from my back yard picnic table with a fatburger in one hand and a cell phone in the other.
Still can’t fathom passing on Dobson, Wahlstrom and then Wilde – I’m happy with Miller and Lundkvist but we’ve gifted the Islanders exactly what they needed just to gamble on Kravstov and take a goalie in spite of Shestorkyin, Georgiev and the other prospects in the pipeline.
Here’s my hot take: Miller is going to be a bust as a defenseman.
Dobson, Wahlstrom, Wilde – The Reindeer, The Mall, and The Importance of Drafting Earnestly.
You would think they would have learned to stop taking goaltenders early. But, then again, when this scouting staff has had such great hits as Al Montoya, Antoine Lafleur, and Brandon Halverson, you just have to keep drafting goaltenders early.
2018-19: Lose for Hughes
2019-20: La Derniere for LaFreniere
2020-21: Make playoffs
2021-22: Win Stanley Cup
‘The 6-3, 198-pounder moved from forward two years ago and is recognized as an excellent skater for his size.’ For his size? Interesting disclaimer. Not exactly a behemoth. Being switched from center to D not a good omen. Why?
Likely Big Buff 2.0.
As in he’ll be waxing cars in 2 years.
Half Big Buff/Half Evander Kane, in that he will throw his own tracksuit into a running shower.
This year should have been “into the latrine for Dahlin.”
Hey Folks!
It’s day 1 of Rangers prospect development camp, or as I like to call it: Pfffft… these kids are all blue chips primed for greatness…. I should know, I picked them…. camp.
Just look at Kravtsov flying out there…. A hybrid of Kuznetsov and Malkin with a touch of Hugh Jessiman.
And wow, D’Andre’s notched eyebrows ALONE make him superior to the garbage they call D on that JOKE of a draft board from Dallas….. They all wish they had the intuition that I…. Off the boardie Gordie have. Suckaaaaaas!!
Welp, this mustache isn’t going to trim itself…. Great talk!
Gordo
Rangers could have 2nd overall next draft and Clark will select a kid ranked 9th
Clark tells the story of how the first time he saw Lundkvist was on the last day of a 16-day trip (bender), and he was tired (hung over), and skeptical (clueless) watching him in warmups (half asleep after 2 large cups of jo). Then, Clark said: “They dropped the puck and he just took it (the biscuit), and he just took off, and went through the whole team, and I was, like – finally, I was awake (coffee spill), and, you know, excited (hair of the dog next round).’’
If the list were to be believed…if we were drafting 6th overall, we would’ve let Zadina go.
Clark>Curly….Gorton>Moe…..Sather>Larry……Dury>Shemp….NYR Management Team! What could possibly go wrong with these guys at the draft table?
Miller will be fun to root for. Liked his interview. Liked seeing football highlights. We need a football mentality for crease clearing.
With his size, hope he can learn to fight even though he’s pegged for college. Where Strudwick when you need him?
cregg, How about Princeton’s George Parros?
Yeh. Hoping that can happen. One of the most intriguing fighters in history. I was astonished the first time I bet heard parros was a college player. Ivy League no less.
But obviously he was more the exception to the rule.
Ps. iPhone autocorrect 📲 is such a pia
The first thought that came to my mind when they were talking about miller was Sean Day.
I’m glad Day is at prospect camp. I’m hoping for an update on him from Carp. Is he developing or has he stalled and not looking like someone who will pan out. Granted, sometimes these kids take 5 years. Remember it took Michael sauer like 3 more seasons than Marc Staal to make the big club (they were the same draft class)
Day has the size and tools to turn into something.
When in doubt about the status of a Rangers prospect, the safe money is on “not going to pan out”.
Hahahahah. Say it ain’t so gravy!
Yeh. Seems like it
Though Day is only 20 yo. Just completed juniors. Will be AHL bound this year. Likely 1 or 2 years away according to this sauce.
https://dobberprospects.com/sean-day/
I think Miller is nothing like Day.
Lots of 97,98,99 birth years; is youth wasted on the young?
Montral supposedly interested in Voynov. So they trade away Subban because of character issue of donating $10MM to a children’s hospital, but Voynov is fine.
I think Sean Day, and to a lesser extent Joe Veleno, suffered from the exceptional status that let them play Junior hockey at 15. I am hoping that it was a case of “too much, too soon” to borrow a line from Slap Shot. I am not so sure how Day’s talent level rated at 15 in comparisons to the kids around him, but his size alone probably played a big factor.
I don’t think Veleno had any problems there. Day’s status was granted to him basically because of his size. Veleno had a fine junior career.
Seems like the latest “Exceptional Status” guys in junior are getting it because they hit puberty a year early.
In other news – the Duke looks like he’s a non-tender in Chicago and will be an UFA.
All I know is I would very much like to see howden and hajek on the rangers next season
By next season I mean this coming season.
Howden close to zero chance. Hajek only slightly higher.
I broke the blog
Your appearance has been intimidating. I miss ILB
Pronman released an early top 25 for 2019 list
Only 1 d in top 10
Only 4 in top 25
Maybe that’s why we went more D this year. Knowing next year top talent is looking like forwards
Good evening, boneheads!
Busy day. What did I miss?
Some interesting non-qualifiers around the league today. The deadline was 5 pm.
Can we petition Gorton to have a cap on the word “character”. Maybe only 3 uses of the word per interview. And a moratorium on using it for every single player !
I mean, if he’s gonna do that then i want him to come out and say who has flawed character. Or a bad family. Or lazy habits. Only person I ever saw do that sort of thing was Torts
Summarizing for Doodie: Everyone is terrible. Especially the draft picks from this year and last.
In the midst of the draft saga I do want to note that looking at the money that L.A. gave to Kovalchuk I’m glad he isn’t a Ranger right now. Sorry if that pisses some of you off  : D
As for Tavares, I’ll be honest- kinda bummed we aren’t one of the teams in the mix. With that said I think that Doug Wilson will break the bank and mortgage his own house to offer him a ridonkulous deal
Carp has a new article up: https://theathletic.com/408269/2018/06/25/carpiniello-kravtsovs-first-day-on-the-ice-and-other-notes-from-rangers-development-camp/
Do we think Hayes or Mika could be the lead piece in a deal to acquire Panarin (who Friedman says wants to play here, LA and FL (Tampa?))? And if so, what else do people think we would we have to add?
Only if Panerin is a character guy
Who didn’t get qualified?
I think at the rate they’re going they better make damn well sure that Andersson AND Chytil are capable of playing full time in the nhl before trading away Hayes or Zika to make room for them.
Speaking of centers-If Toronto signs Tavares I’ll be driving the trade for Kadri bandwagon…
Wick- notably the not qualified list was like Duclair, Mrazek, Smith Pelly and Lehrner
My goodness. Imagine if they re-sign Nash and Grabner and head into the season without any other moves?
It’ll be sick time around here.
In the context of the UFA market, I’m guessing the term “character guys” is code for guys like Roussell, Komorov and Reaves.

gorton text version today
I infer by Gortdie’s repeated “character guys” search that he Freudianly feels that we presently have a dearth of same. Seems pretty logical to me.
7:30 am and 10:30 am msg has half hr show on off season thus far and looking forward

Significant interest in veteran forward Rick Nash. At least 5 teams are pursuing the star winger.
It’s funny to see all the analytical Rangers fans want DuClair back. He’s got good possession numbers is their cry. 4th team by the age of 22 is all you really need to know. He’s a friggin dog, plain and simple.
BDL – Carp called it; he’s going to score a lot of goals for a lot of teams. Well, maybe the second part…
Gorton: On Lundkvist playing in Sweden next year, “there are so many Lundqvist’s and LIndqvist’s that you had to make me think here of the defenseman, Nils.
On Libor Hajek: …we like about him is his character, skill, that he can eat minutes, can PK, PP. We love his character…
Duclair? He really fits into what they are looking to add to this team. Character. WOOF!
But
