The Rangers played one of their most complete games of the season, beating the Red Wings in an afternoon special at the Garden, 4-1. The Red Wings are fighting for the last wild card in the Eastern conference and they definitely looked tighter and tighter as the game went on. As a result of the Ranger win, Buffalo and Tampa Bay are now qualified, possibly as the one and two seed from the Atlantic division. Detroit is in a five way point tie for the second wild card, currently Ottawa’s off of tie-breaks.
In what could be his last game as a NYR and possibly of his career, Jonathan Quick made a spectacular effort, missing the shutout by just 33 seconds and stopping 31 of 32 Detroit shots on goal while also facing four power plays. A very well deserved first star of the game.
The rest of the night belonged to the second and third stars, Perreault and Chmelař. The only scoring of the first period was at 13:19, a nice tip-in goal by Chmelař (4), who shows good ability and desire to get net front as often as possible. The shot came from Gavrikov (19) with Sykora (1) getting his first NHL assist, a secondary. 1-0 NYR after one.
The second period was the start of the Perreault show. At 15:59, Perreault (8) settled a centering pass from Zibanejad (39) in the low slot just next to the left circle and then rifled it past Gibson. Robertson (12) awarded the secondary assist on the play. That was it for the second, 2-0 NYR.
Next, while on the power play, a fast moving tandem of Brodzinski and Perreault entered the offensive zone, Perreault carrying the puck over the red line before passing to Brodzinski along the boards at the blue line. Brodzinski (9) returned the favor, hit Perreault (9) with a cross ice pass on the left side of the net for a well timed tip-in. 3-0 NYR at 07:13, Fox (39) with the secondary. Ten minutes later at 18:16, the Rangers, having gone about two minutes against Detroit’s man advantage empty net, scored to go up 4-0. This time it was Miller (32) skating through the center and passing off to Perreault (10) along the boards to take the shot at the empty net and score, Fox (40) once again with the secondary assist. Perreault is the first NYR rookie with a hatty since 2013.
Unfortunately, with less than a minute left and the teams skating five on five, Brodzinski and Borgen would be caught puck watching in front of the net only to have Quick give up the shutout. Of the two, Borgen’s mistake was worse as the shooter was right behind him, though it did seem questionable to have those guys on the ice in the last minute instead of Schneider and a rested Trocheck. In any event, a high quality performance from Quick and the entire team – the Rangers dominated offensive zone time for much of the game and were very involved in board battles and checking. Had they only played this way the entire season 🤷♂️
Game summary below:

Guess what? The Rangers are back on your TV set tomorrow night, 5 April at 19:00 EDT against the Washington Capitals. ESPN and SN with the telecast.

The late HNIC game is Vegas/Edmonton. Vegas wants to keep their margin over the Kings but also has a shot of getting one point back of Edmonton (I think they have the tie break over the Ducks)
Wings with 74 shot attempts to 47 for the Rangers. Wings seem to have the better of the play. Quick was good. Hope he gets another start.
4th line got ~11 minutes. Much better than against the Habs.
Happy Easter boneheads!
Vegas won, led by former nyr Howden. Ducks picked a bad time to go on a losing streak. LAK still in it for wild card but no tie break over preds
The winning has to stop. They are getting close to several other teams.
Given the low expecations for next season – could a line up with two kids on the RW on lines 2 and 3 be the way to go? Punt the nephew, put Brodzinski back to 13th/emergency wing/center for another $1M, and give Fortescue a shot on 3rd pair with the Borg?
That would also mean keepinng Tro and Laf another season (or some portion, both contracts give you that luxury) and Laba a 4C. I’d like Laba to get minutes but knowning soph year slumps maybe it makes sense to take a little pressure off and try to get him 10-12 a game until Tro is gone?
The wild card in all of that is JT at center, not just his play but his health. And it may not be a ‘contender’ fourth line but we aren’t a likely contender and of all the lines, that one is easiest to change in the future.
Still looking for down the road centers to replace JT and eventually Mika with expectation that Laba will at minimum step into 3C vacated by Tro.
Howden was doomed by expectations. He wasn’t going to make up for the loss of McD and Miller. That wasn’t his fault. He is a solid bottom six center.
ORF really just need Kracken to win a couple, they have games in hand. Our final stretch is not easy – Craps fighting for WC2, BUF/TBL fighting for first, DAL trying to hold 2nd. Only FLA a disinterested party.
ORF looks like Howden’s been floating 2/3C. Missed a chunk of season injured. Should fit into Torts style.
this place killed Howden when he was a Ranger
its a retool boys…the top 6 will look different in October
“The wild card in all of that is JT at center, not just his play but his health…”
Gentlemen, we can rebuild him; we have the technology… JT Miller will be that man — better than he was before; better, stronger, faster.
“The winning has to stop. They are getting close to several other teams.”
I predict they’ll finish around 6-8 from bottom and end up with another 5’9″ bottom-six forward. Book[mark] it! This franchise has perfected the art of delivering the opposite of what their fan base wants.
If only we have waited 4 more years for howden to erupt to a 20 goal player – think of all the fun we’d be having! 😁
When was Drury’s last draft pick that was under 6 foot?
The New York Rangers prioritized size in the 2024 NHL Draft, highlighted by 6’7″ winger Nathan Aspinall (5th round) and 6’3″ defenseman EJ Emery (1st round). The four-player draft class continued a trend of selecting large prospects with high potential to develop into physical power forwards or sturdy defenders.

Who said Purro was a keeper?
Coolio-Lava-Charzar would be a fun 3rd line to watch next season; nasty to play against.
Laffy needs to work on his shot, has been missing grade A chances
SN
I agree on Busto. He’s got a real nice wrister just needs to work on accuracy. And definitely needs to shoot more. Trocheck needs to be moved at the draft or over the summer at least. Do it while he still has value. Waiting too long will be a major mistake. Resign Sheary for at least 4×4 to keep Sully Happy. LMAO!
Breaking News: Patrick Roy has been made redundant.
Azzdancers GM Darshe beating LouLam’s surprise of replacing Fetorek w Robinson w 8 games to go but cannot top Espo’s stupid move to replace Bergeron with himself w 2 games to go and then get swept in 1st round of POs.
One of the many problems I had with”Trader Phil” a real putz as a player and much worse as a GM.
Thought Roy was solid ..don’t really get this move
They had lost seven of ten. I guess they’re coming down from their Schaefer high.
“Charzar”. Hahaha. Love it!!!
We need to get some players that can skate. We always seem to get players who’s bio reads “good shot but average skating” “skating will need to be worked on” “only knock is skating and edgework”
Patrick Roy fired by Islanders & replaced by Peter DeBoer. Poor Peter is still getting the same team lacking in depth. Poor Isles fans; we’re in far better stead
Never feel sorry for Icelander fans or Filth fans or Cowboys fans. They and their teams blow.
I remember caufield draft when he kept falling in the draft. All due to size. Now he’s a top scorer and his size doesn’t look to be a detriment at all.
Caulfield had Grade A mitts but very undersized; only draft the little ones w highly unique skills
It takes more than a Schaefer
For your job to be safer
Big nuts hang from little trees!
BobbyO height alone not good enough, see Gonchar who weighs less than women hockey players
Did Icelanders lay easter egg?
GM’s and coaches getting canned and IMHO none of them as bad as Drury and Sullivan. But hey Perreault had a hat trick and Busto keeps missing the net. I do like Melosh and 4tesQ.
Will be traveling to Detroit this week with my dad for another reason
But, a couple weeks ago I got on Ticketmaster resale 2 tickets row 1 of the 200 level at little ceasers to see the red wings and blue jackets battle for that last playoff spot
Only cost $50 a ticket!!!
Imagine how much MSG woulda been for a game with playoff implications?!
Should be a treat as my dad has never seen an NHL game (nor AHL) in person. He’s about to be 79!
Have to love the hamster wheel of nhl coaching retreads!
Corporal I think they test fan loyalty at the entrance by making you eat two slices of lil Caesar’s 🤣
Gonchar will be bigger than Zach Jones or Nils Lindqvist. He won’t be as big as Uncle Sergei.
Roobroeck’s brother has dropped down to where he may be on the board with the Rangers 2nd 1sr rounder. He could be an interesting choice, but others may drop since after the first few picks guys are all over the board.
It was just here that Howden was a whipping boy. The whole fan base hated him. They didn’t like the trade and hated the return.
What are the odds after winning back to back Stanley Cups the Panthers get the 1OA pick?
Beezle the point was he has drafted size height and weight consistently as GM
Shilov, Command (6’1″) Roobroeck, Dagenais (6’4″) all Centers that are ranked toward the bottom quarter of first round about where the Rangers’ Dallas pick should land
wwpd are you suggesting we won’t be able to trade Trocheck for McDavid or Drysaddle?
PSA: the game tonight is on ESPN 🤢 and SN 👍
To the conventional thinking that all top players are losing teams usually have poor +/- stats…34yo Ryan O’Reilly making $4.5 per. 25-44-69 +8
The big thing that infuriated me with howden was how Quinn babied him and didn’t hold his play accountable. Hence the nickname “Quinn’s son”
All he did was fall down. Lose puck battles. Not play tough like was his billing he shoulda been more like cuylle and we woulda thought differently about him.
Hindsight, nice kid (too nice?) that I’m glad he’s found a home and a career but also glad he is not here. Whenever I see him now he is still charmin soft which is not what we want in our bottom 6.
Howden was rushed up imho. Needed to get his skating legs under him to be playing against men.
Along w Flip-flop, Crapsoft, Lisa; brought up too soon on a bad team with a rookie coach.
Beezle perish the thought
