Rangers 7, Lightning 3

It is with a very sad heart we learn this morning of the passing of Hall of Fame hockey writer Larry Brooks at the too young age of 75. Brooks was the long time NYR beat writer and thorn in the side of many a coach and some players after spending time in the NJD organization. Though sometimes sensational (it is a business afterall), his columns were often insightful both in capturing what fans were thinking as well as suggesting ways the team could improve. Larry will be missed greatly! 😢

Heave ho two in a row! The Rangers emerged from Tampa with a 7-3 pond hockey win over the Lightning last night. Ten goals is a bit much to write about each so …

The first period was a 4-3 NYR game of pond hockey. Everytime you thought the Rangers would pull ahead, Tampa would race back and score again. The second period was the quiet period, the only goal by Trocheck (1), his first of the season after missing 16(?) games. He would get his second early in the third period at which point the Rangers had doubled up the Lightning. Being down three, the Lightning pulled their goalie very early, to no avail as Cuylle (6) would get his second of the night (earlier PPG) with an empty netter.

Other NYR scorers were JT Miller (4), Lafreniere (4) and Borgen (1). The Rangers managed to do all this with only 21 shots on goal to TBL 36. Like the Nashville game, the Rangers took advantage of the situation – Tampa was clearly hurting with three key players out – McDonagh, Hedman and Cirelli as well as three others and goalie Vasilevskiy’s sharp skates. Book the points and move on, but even coach Sullivan felt this was more about being opportunistic than playing, saying “I don’t think they were the cleanest games from execution standpoint on either side of the puck.” in his post game presser.

Scoring details below:

The Rangers remain on the road and will be in Columbus for a match Saturday at 19:00 EST against the Blue Jackets. Telecast carried by MSG and FDSNOH.

Cannot wait till Mollie and Boiler do there next episode of Up In The Blueseat podcast. I am sure that will be very hard for Mollie.
Have followed the Rangers for just about 60 years and we use to have a lot of very good hockey writers in NYC. With a lot of newspapers cutting back over last 2 decades coverage of hockey has been wanting. So glad to have found this page and happy to be able to interact with you boneheads.

Daily life is tumultuous but Brooksie was like an anchor to grab onto for at least a few minutes a day.

I do hope the Garden does something at the next home game.

Senators re-sign forward Shane Pinto to 4-year, $7.5 million AAV extension

Pinto had 21 G 16 A in 70 GP in 24/25 and has 8G 6 A in 17 GP this season. He turned 25 yesterday. The first two years of the extension have no clauses because of age, the last two have 10 team NTC. First look suggests no signing bonuses in the contract.

Farewell to Brooksie. Truly one of the last Ranger “sportswriter” worthy of that designation.

With Avery hidden in his back pocket, Brooksie was never at a loss for insider truths.

I remember seeing him on the prime rib sandwich line

I asked him who we should want to play

    I thought Detroit

    He said Washington

    We swept Washington

He looked like cross between Bon Jovi and duguay

GGMM is going to have to step up her game. Too soft, needs to start asking more difficult/uncomfortable questions of players, coaches and management.

RIP Larry Brooks a great sports writer. And it is kind of cool that he occasionally picked through some of our comments.

Larry will definitely be missed. Good old Ranger soul. You never know when that 7th decade rolls around. I thought I was indestructible unfortunately that isn’t the case. Every day is a blessing.

$4 mil. ZOWIE! Years back, I loaned my unknown, (but touring) younger brother my ’58 Strat Sunburst and he told me it was stolen somewhere along the way.

Brooksie no doubt thought he should be followed and replaced by Winston Churchill when the time came, not a Boston co-ed.

When Brooks wrote that one time about a particularly satisfying bowel movement, I suspected that he had been following E3.

Sad news on Larry Brooks. Some nice tributes here and it would be nice if his family could see them and know how much he was respected and will be missed. Though I knew he stepped away recently, I had no idea he was battling cancer and was so sick. He worked til the bitter end in the field he loved, so he never really “worked” a day in his life. God for him that he did what he loved until the end. As for myself, I really enjoyed reading Larry’s articles. He was old school guy who knew and loved hockey, that’s rare these days in the print media. I will miss him. RIP Larry, you will be missed.

Rest in peace Larry Brooks. He’s a legend in his own time. As as devout Ranger fan he ‘s provided me with an insight to this game. Didn’t agree with him on everything. He was a treasure trove of hockey knowledge. My heartfelt condolences to his family and close friends. I will truly miss him.

My sister-in-law still has my brother’s 59 Strat, we called it Blackie. He passed at 46 years old in 2004 from cancer. I can’t imagine how much it’s worth.

Losing Larry hurts for sure. It’s rare that the death of a public figure that I dont know on a personal level affects me, but this one did- He was a part of the NYR experience as far as I’m concerned. He will be greatly missed. I hope at the next home game, MSG will find a way to honor him.

I often referred to him as Uncle Larry in part because he felt like an uncle, not some rando espn game wrap writer.
