Rangers 6, Predators 3

The Rangers finally got the home win 🐒 off their backs last night at MSG with a resounding 6-3 victory over a really bad Nashville team. 🎉🎆

Zibanejad (5) opened the scoring at 10:39 of the first with a nice breakaway goal. One might ask, “breakaway from who?” considering two skaters from Nashvilled changed right in front of him at center ice but oh well! 1-0 NYR. Wood (4) would tie the game up with the first of his three on the night off the PP at 16:16, putting in a loose puck over a sprawling Shesterkin. 1-1 for a few minutes until Gavrikov (2) from the highish slot put another past Saros. 2-1 NYR after 1.

The second period was an early Black Friday special from Nashville. The Rangers would score three goals on only four shots…the entire period. It started quickly with Lafreniere (3) getting one on the PP off a nice feed from just called up Perreault (1), his first NHL point. Panarin (4) would get his first of two on the night at 07:51 from the point with an assist from Lafreniere (7). Cuylle (4) would also get on the sheets at the 19:50 mark off a 3 on 2, taking the pass from Laba (3) and firing it from near the top of the circle. 5-1 NYR after two, oh my!

The third period was mostly the Matthew Wood (5,6) period as he would complete his hat trick with a PPG at 12:48 and a last gasp goal at 19:15. In between, Panarin (5) would pick up a lose puck behind the goal line and craftily bank it in of one of the Nashville skaters. Final 6-3 NYR.

The return of Trocheck clearly had a positive effect on play and psychology of the team. However, it wasn’t all roses – they did give up three and two of those on the PP so still room for improvement. Hopefully stopping the talk about not winning before Thanksgiving gives them a boost!

Scoring details below:

The Rangers go on the road and will be in Tampa for a match Wednesday at 19:00 EST. Telecast carried by TNT and HBO MAX.

Shea Butter played last night for Preds? Not sure I heard his name.

Predators has to be one of the more interesting team names.

Having more talent on the ice proved to be beneficial; who knew?

Laffy +3 on the night; there is hope…

Laba finding the seam and Cuylle ability to collect the puck off the skate and finish was high end play. Crazy how easy he made it look full speed.

I’d be very careful reading too much into this game. Preds were a disaster last night and we still gave up three, including 2/4 to their power play. That kid Wood is hard to play against 😱

I’ll just give one example of why I’m not a fan of Sheary (SN gave the other). On the first Pred goal, Sheary chased the guy down behind the net. Good. Sheary did not hit the guy or stop his pass. Not good. Sheary then skates about four feet in front of the net, dead center. OK, he’s in a position to pick up someone. Sheary continues to glide to dot level in center. Less good. Sheary then does not cover #58, who he could have picked up at any point. 58 gets the shot off that leads to the chaos in front which Sheary remains a specator to.

For a guy that has been in the league as long as he has, that was not a good look.

    Sheary is just unnecessary!

It was good to see LaCoast get a few points, maybe it gets him going a bit. I’ll say this though – coaching staff has him in the same bucket as Panarin: thou shalt not ever be on the PK.

Laf had 14:09 ES TOI in 17 shifts, 1:00 PP in 2 shifts, 0 PK. Coolio however 13:28 ES TOI in 19 shifts, 1:37 PP in 2 shifts and 2:01 on PK in 3 shifts

Could be the shift changes just worked against Laf but seems Coolio is the guy the coaching staff trusts more all around.

A few people asked both GGMM and Carp if they knew what black site Maloney had been rendered to. Carp said he knows where Maloney is and that yes, he’ll be back on the broadcast but nothing more. Gather then this is something close to home nobody wants to talk about or have been asked not to. Hopefully not a health matter or something stupid like a dui.

DUI? Well, he’s bound to be sober by now. And what’s the big deal anyway? Not like he’s running the FBI. And Kenny chastising Boiler about mildly questioning a couple Zebra calls – he’s (Kenny) a real house organ and Buttman/Dolan tool. He did it to Maloney time and again on radio.

I like Maloney…in smallish doses. For the once in awhile radio listen hes good and I do like his between period/post game takes. But he needs to work on delivery for 82 games on the tv broadcast.

Would have much prefered Boyle to have been the color guy but as many said, he probably was not interested in a full time gig.

This note bit was a nice showcase

Maloney good to the centennial year. But at his age, not looking like a long term placement.

If Boyle liked what he was doing I could see him and Faust next year

Kenny may not be the long term solution either because of his multi sport commitments and national broadcasts

Rangers were fortunate to beat a very bad last place team. They looked better, but like Beezle, I will temper my expectations. If they play the same way against TB or Columbus, it will be an ugly loss. Preds can’t get out of their own way these days.

    1
  27. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

    Shoulda been 6-1

Preds gifted long amount of 5 on 3
Boyle said it right about 2 of the 3 calls being questionable at best. Led to the third penalty

Then the goal off the non call high stick also a factor

The only one pissed about the late goals is Shesty and the special teams coach

I don’t think MSG would have signed Kenny if they believed he couldn’t handle the multi-sport coverage (and have someone to fill in) so don’t expect change there.

As to Maloney, they stuck with Joe M for ages so hard to see them pushing him out. Cally might be a little too much as an 82 game color guy. Boyle seems to know when to shut up and as SN said, they could turn his mic up a tad.

I wouldn’t get to excited about last night game between the preds and rangers. Preds are not a good team and there starting goalie, Barf!!! 12 shots on goal and gave up 5 goals. The preds outshot the rangers 30-18. Normally with a decent goaltender most likely the preds win the game. Next the lightning, since the rangers won they will probably lose against the lightning. That is what mediocre teams do.

    2
  33. St Pete Eli Avatar

I understand my repetition, but the only way forward for me is low expectations night in night out. In case there are any doubts Shesty is an overpaid slightly above average goalie.

Ducks have a balance of youth and vets as a result of trades with Drury. He hasn’t gotten much is return other than cap space. This Summer he may have more cap space than he can use. Let’s hope he doesn’t do anything stupid with it.

When asked if having the veteran back helped his own game on Monday night, Lafrenière said “obviously, yes” and added “he does everything for us.”

Our GM do something stupid. What a concept. There are no shiny toys left for him to waste money on. Maybe a some hard work and a lot of luck.
As a lot of you have shown our history with draft picks is pretty bad. Going forward I do not think he will pull any rabbits out of his hat. Oh well. We will always have 1994.
30 years is a long time to go without a Cup. On the bright side we could be Jets or Knicks fan’s. Lucky for me I am an old guy and remember all three of those championships. Just don’t ask me what I ate for lunch yesterday.

Bobby except Gavrikov those guys were here from the deadline or before last season. What has changed is less stupidity from the forwards. We’ve seen this movie before and the question the pundits should be asking is whether the early commit to “team defense” will make it 82 games.

top 5 defense on…checks date…Nov 12. I applaud the D first approach which will hamper some of the East-West performers but ultimately will reduce high danger shots and lead to more success, especially if the ‘star’ goalie plays to his contract.

Dreary’s misses are at the deadline and how he completely fugged up trading young talent that was not living up to their draft status; waited too long.

The player profile available to spend cap on this offseason, if not sooner, are the Tro types; mid salary range; not flashy but effective. Even JT fits that mold as his $8M cap hit is very manageable in an increasing cap world.

The Meeka contract is the primary anchor now; he is playing with more verve and has the flexibility to play wing or forward; time will tell. There is a lot of years left on that dog of a deal.

Carey – my problem with Laf is he coasts (hence the nickname) too much too often.

Yeah we’ll see the game here and there that he turns it up and lives up to expectations but those games must not be the exceptions. Had thought by 400 games (he’s at 397 GP) that would not need to be said but 🤷‍♂️

Let’s not forget the many, many “have you seen Chris” comments from the earlier part of his career made by me (and many others).

Yet, through his first 381 games, #20 with 15:40 ATOI scored at a 22.6G 47.1 pts 82 game pace with little deviation, including his first 23 games in 12/13. Start counting in 13/14 when he played 66 games (similar to Lafreniere) those stats get bumped up to 24.6 G/50.3 pt pace over 437 games.

Laf in 397 19.6G/42.1 pts 82 pace. 16:16 vs 15:41 ATOI. So yes, Laf needs a good kick in the butt even more than Kreider did (who was more consistent and at a higher level).

Beezle – Couldn’t agree more. I was never a fan of Kreider because of his frequent disappearing act and the lack of effort using the size and skills he had. He should have been a top three winger in the league. Laf seems like he has followed in Kreider’s foot steps as far as lack of effort. There was a very noticeable difference in his skating and engagement in Preds game. That begs the question, where is that effort the rest of the games? I have no patience for players that waste their talent because they are lazy, especially after they sign a big contract.

Please win tonight and make me believe once again! All of my teams are insistent on sh-tting the bed, and I need just ONE of them to give me a glimmer of hope. My Miami Hurricanes did their usual mid-season choke job, proving the U is NOT, in fact, back. The Mets pulled their late-season collapse to perfection…. Do I HAVE to even bring the Giants up?

Mkh – my point with Kreider was not so much to point out the early career disappearing acts but that even with that, he was still a better player than what we have seen from Lafreniere to this point and dare I say, was making far less. But you are right, Kreider most likely could have been even better but he was still pretty good even then.

Laf’s comment about Tro today really rubbed me the wrong way – he should have been doubling his effort then to make up for the lack of Trocheck. Maybe I need glasses but I saw more the opposite. Guy has played more NHL games than many that set foot on the ice ever will (about 2300 of 7900 have played as many), step it up!
