The Rangers lost a another home game at the Garden last night, a 2-0 affair until a late ENG with about a minute left in the game. Defensively they played OK, giving up a PPG to Ehlers (1) at 13:30 of the first and another goal to Walker (2) late in the second period at 17:07.
Once again, the problem was on the offensive side of the ledger. And offensive it was. They came out of the gate with a reasonably good pace and attack, putting 15 shots on net in the first period. Alas, none would go in. As the game went on, the Rangers seemed to deflate more and more until virtually nothing was left – just nine shots in the second and an unfathomable single shot on goal in the third period while trailing 2-0. And zero is not a winning score in hockey.
Luckily for the Rangers, though they are last in the Eastern conference in P%, it is still early in the season so just a few wins separate the early leaders from the rest.

I figured it out, but I don’t think we’re ready for it. The supposedly once elite core is old slow and just about done. Everyone else is mediocre. Twerkin is an overpaid average net minder. Sometimes great, sometimes not so much. Coach is irrelevant! Thank you Jimmy D.
The only way to fix it is to blow it up, accumulate assets, get a little lucky in the draft and draft well. Unfortunately that is not the rangers way of doing things.

What a bizarre start to the season at MSG for the Rangers. At this point it’s got to be psychological.
They are playing the right way; would folks prefer a 5-3 loss? They have little margin for error with the top forwards not finishing and PP not connecting with same players.
Meeka is turning into Brad Richards with no angle-hope shots and no follow up toward the crease; always moving away from the goal; need to stick your nose in there and get some grimy greasy goals; not this guy.
Kreider scored again (8 GP, 7 Gs) as well as Trouba last night as Ducks beat Panthers. Nothing to see here…fugg u Dreary.

Observation but no backup- team is taking a lot of hooking calls. A few looked bogus but those are almost always dumb/lazy penalties. That or you are getting beat because you are gassed or too slow to begin with.
One big improvement is the zone entry with the wingers staying wide at opponents blue line and center showing for pass cutting across

Seems like every shot the Rangers take is 3″ off the ice. Try top shelf for a change since most of these goalies have the bottom half covered. Do they not have the strength to lift the puck?
So tired of the nonsense comments after the game by both players and coach. Just word salads that mean nothing, as they do nothing to change things. Sully’s words that “performance matters” is complete garbage. If performance really mattered Laf and Panarin would be watching from the stands, not being rewarded with PP time. This team will be a mushy middle non playoff team as long as Drury is in charge. Time for a new GM and a new letter. Clean house already!!
Believed they would scuffle for first month but Trocheck is coming back and they are still 500 playing good defense…probably Trocheck will be with his old line mates to wake them out of their slumber …Laffy PP time coming to an end
They seem very content to circle on the perimeter and not go to the net. The Canes kept them there and nothing came of it. Puck possession didn’t lead to scoring chances.
Special teams also hurt. The PP is awful and the PK is mediocre starting between the pipes.
They did better in their zone. There were fewer sieges in their end and had less trouble breaking out. They don’t just predictably try to force the puck along the boards and make the forecheck easy for opponents anymore.
The question for every home game is will they score tonight and the answer is usually no. They are on a pace to be shutout 27 times at home.
Brad Richrds infuriated me by the way he lah-di-dahed it off the ice at the end of his shifts, leaving his team 4 on 5..
It’s not the style that is the problem unless your panarin. Panarin is good player when the rangers played pond hockey but when it came to playoffs panarin disappeared. The north/south style of play is not for panarin and why he is struggling to score goals. The style of north/south and a better defensive structure is not the problem, rangers top six is average, not going far with the rangers top six. They will win games and they will lose games and that means they are what they are, a .500 hockey team.
But Trocheck is coming back and Perrault will be in top 6 end of month

Really think Drury should move Bread now, not at the deadline. There seems (from gossip) to be some interest and the contract talks are a dead end. Remove both the cloud and the style of play that no longer fits the rest of the team.
Some will say you won’t get maximum value now but consider too the team getting him will, in theory, have him helping pad their regular season point totals to get a better post season berth.
Panarin, and Schneider are the obvious trade candidates. Panarin became of contract and style of play. Schneider because of value, and Morrow.
schneider is one of the few current rangers (excluding the goalies) i actually like. some hit he had late in the game.
regarding bread we can eat half his contract to facilitate a trade. still rather do it later in season. can get more back. most of us know this season is meh at best.
I’m a Schneider fan as well, but after 5 years he’s still a 3rd pair guy. Fox signed long term. Borgen signed long term. Schneider value is probably as a trade chip.

Carey – Borgen is signed, yes, but is also movable after this season if they wish. Fox is movable again after one more season. Perhaps the better idea with Schneider is to move on from Soucy after this season, put Schneider on his off side with the Borg and then potentially on the right of Gavrikov if something is done with Fox.
That also gives a spot for Morrow, though at this stage he is still very much an unknown with potential.
Laba is also making Trocheck a deadline chip, though early going on that.
Bobby there is a very long list of coaches and gms who have been recently extended and are sent packing.

Why would Sullivan be going anywhere?
SN, I’ve been on here for years saying the rangers need to draft players from western canada because those are the type of players that play the north/south playoff style hockey. They finally started to do it and need to do it a lot more.
1/ The change in drafting style began with JD
2/ Drury has only a few good moves/signings. Carrick one of them. These are all at least as, if not more, important than the draft picks.
3/ The KAM deal was enabled by KAM and his agent. Sure Drury had his part but there was little genius or craft involved.
4/ Signing the best available shutdown defender after cutting loose one of your top defenders (hold your breath Coos) at a time your incoming coach wants a stay at home defense is genius? You could have hired any rando from the blue seats to do that deal.
If drury’s plan was to bring in sullivan, fix the defense and change the style of play, which he did and than in the off season sign Mcdavid or Eichel who were going to be free agents, well, that plan has already been blown up because those two players resigned. This team is going nowhere as constructed.

Coos – KAM was viewed as a top defender. NYR fans thought differently as we got to see his every failing. And yes, KAM and his agent were the key parts to that deal. I said this at the time (long repost)
The Carolina transaction does seem dodgy. This is my take, probably wrong but 🤷♂️
First, the contract is 8x$7.5. Miller could only get that term if he was signed by NYR, Carolina could only give 7.
If Carolina had planned an offersheet of 7×7.5, that would have been 10.5 AAV for compensation, or two firsts, a second and a third. I believe Carolina had the two firsts and a second (but not sure they had the third)
I think the original offer sheet would have come in the third tier – meaning a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Miller wanted more $ and term. Carolina was willing to pay the money and term but not give up the extra picks.
Enter Drury who can facilitate the deal. Neither Drury nor Miller can push Carolina too hard or they will just walk and both are out cold. So Drury says I’ll take Morrow instead of the third and do the sign and trade to the term and $ agreed by Miller.
I’d guess I’d say I’d give Drury the gold star to the extent that Morrow ends up better than a third rounder. Though Miller effectively helped Drury make that happen and in the end, none of it would have happened outside the original offer sheet.

I don’t hate Drury, I just don’t think he is a very good GM. And re Gavrikov, there had been talk in the week prior to crazy season that there were many suitors and yet…none emerged when the bell rang. Either they knew Drury was going to out bid them or they decided to go with the sexy kids that put up points but can’t really play defense very well. At least a few of the latter did happen.

Drury destroyed that team. Made worse by all the trades for pure rentals. So the future is bleak since the next generation is mostly not existent.
Drury is fulfilling the sam prophecy. And this one will last a lifetime. The next gm will have his work ahead of him to really create a good future.
IMO the only way to go in the right direction is do what the devils did a fews years ago and what the islanders did last year. The way drury is doing things is going to be the same old, same old ranger way. History shows it doesn’t work but hey, I’ve been wrong before.

We’re at least 5 years away from being a true contender. And that’s if Drury is gone soon or changes completely the way he does things and brings in young talent. That would be a complete 180 by him so it’s totally unexpected.

Tying Kreider into your pond hockey remark is very weak. Especially considering your being a big fan of the king of pond hockey. Kreider, by the way, is a very good defensive forward. The rest of what you said, style of play, and more changes coming to the top 6, I agree with.

They did not trade Kreider for a D man. The D has not improved because of that trade. The D has improved because of style change. The style change has caused a lack of goal scoring, something Kreider is pretty good at.

Presume Dreary sent Kreids and Tuba away because he could given their contract status; my hope is Meeka and Bread would have been sent packing as well if he had that flexibility. That’s not to say they can’t be productive; but they can no longer drive play like they did in the past.
It was smart to send Kreider out west as it would really sting if he was in the EC putting up stats.
The head scratcher is signing Tro and trading for JTM to further increase the age demos on the top 6. Tro looked like bupkis last season, hurt already this season; curious to see how he performs this season.
