Unlike the Boo Jays, the Rangers found a way to win in the extra frame last night, beating Seattle 3-2 in OT. Once again, not a very pretty win but a win none the less.
Gavrikov (1) got the scoring started mid-way in the first period, putting a blue line seeing eye shot past Daccord at 10:16. Nobody is looking for a lot of offense from Gavrikov but it is nice to see him get one in. Fox (7) and Brodzinski (1) credited with assists. As usual the Rangers, who can’t have nice things for long, gave up a PPG by Stephenson (3) to tie the game at 12:49, Dunn (5) and Tolvanen (3) assisting. Shesterkin had a pretty clean look at the shot but 🤷♂️. 1-1…for another minute until new Ranger star Laba (2) stuck with the play and hustled to push a rebounding shot from Cuylle (4) past Daccord before falling to the ice and crashing into the boards. Lafreniere (5) got the secondary assist. The first period would have a bit of a pond hockey feel to it but ultimately ended 2-1 NYR.
The only other goal scored in regulation came at 06:59 of the second when Montour (3) rifled a shot from the top of the circle past Shesterkin who seemed to be well positioned but failed to pick up the puck. 2-2 after two and three and on to OT we go.
After exchanging chances to start the OT, Miller would take the back pass from Fox at the Ranger blue line, skate up the middle and split Eberle and Stephenson before dishing to a wide open Cuylle skating through the right circle. Cuylle wasted no time before putting a snap shot in the net to send the Rangers back to NYC winners of three in a row, the first time since Nov. 19 2024 when they won three in a row in regulation.
Statistic of note: NYR 41/66 on faceoffs last night, including 8/12 by Laba and 13/19 by Miller.
Rumor that long time but now infrequent blog commenter Norm was seen on a milk carton in one of the concession stands. At this time, RR3 is unable to verify 🤣
