There is no doubt that Peter Laviolette will be a hands-on head coach. That has been one of Laviolette’s hallmarks throughout his 22 years behind an NHL bench. That is one of the qualities that differentiates him from Gerard Gallant, his immediate predecessor as Rangers head coach, who took more of a laissez-faire approach to the job.
So NYR went from the hands-on coach to the hands-off coach and back to a hands-on coach. Pure genius. Maybe its the players (looking at you Mr. GM) and not the coach?

I wonder what Housley, a somewhat undersized offense-minded defenseman who is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, can add to Fox’s game. I’m intrigued by how much Housley — the one-time No. 6 who was fourth in NHL history for career points by a defenseman trailing only Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey and Al MacInnis — will be able to impact Zac Jones’ game.
Maybe it is time for Uncle Larry to hang it up if he thinks the offensive minded defensive coach is exactly what is needed to “impact” Jones’ game. What Jones needs is someone to teach him how to play his position properly, not score more or rack up assists.

As to Robertson v Jones – Jones was the sexy college offensive defensive pony. Until that trend runs the course more defensive defensemen will be second fiddle in the papers and roster.

I can sort of get Babcock wanting to know a little more about his player’s outside of the rink. His failure was not to realize it could come off as creepy.
It should have instead been done as a voluntary, “in the room” team building event where those who wanted could submit a few photos of family and/or times with friends or whatever they thought would help their teammates have a better grasp of them as a person and not just hockey player. Shared with all participants, not just the coach.

The issue is the gap between those best shifts. Whether it’s hockey sense or compete issues, McNamara is very inconsistent and frustrating to watch, but if he ever figures it out, the former first-round pick in his OHL draft has the potential to pop.

Plus, this core that formed in 2019-20 has chewed through two coaches in three seasons. David Quinn was too oppressive for them. Gerard Gallant was too disengaged for them. The other part of the Chytil centering Panarin equation, is the RW on that line. It would have to be Kakko. There has to be someone with a defensive conscious on that line. Certainly don’t want Lafrenière, who will be learning a new position, having to be the D presence on that line. He’d be much better off with Zibanejad and Kreider.

I think that’s a smart way to go about it, but I also think there are times where maybe you’ve got your top line in the offensive zone and you want to put out two guys who think a little bit more offense.
So be prepared for lots of odd man rushes coming back the other way. Going to be a long season for Igor.

That would be my concern. The emphasis has to be on the forwards being more responsible. They have to cover for the D. They have allowed too many odd man rushes under GG. They were among the worst in the league. Also, Trouba has to be more selective about joining the rush since he can’t skate well enough to recover quickly. I also rememebr Mikkola joining the rush last year and leaving Fox out to dry. It just wasn’t smart. Everyone has to know their roles. They’re not interchangeable.
Oh, boy. Not sure exactly how it happened, but they just had to stop play because Mika Zibanejad was hunched over in pain. Looked like he was favoring his right arm and went to the bench very gingerly. #NYR

As to Robertson v Jones – Jones was the sexy college offensive defensive pony. Until that trend runs the course more defensive defensemen will be second fiddle in the papers and roster.
Sorry if Robertson showed some more of Schneider’s physicality and toughness he would have been called up well before Jones. All reports is a big poke-check first defensive defenseman who hasn’t impressed the brass (who of course have been plenty wrong before)
Sounds like Robertson needs more coaching from Beukaboom and less from the bag of S’s

And NHLPA and scared, pandering Blues’ management said, that they are deeply carrying about players…

I can sort of get Babcock wanting to know a little more about his player’s outside of the rink. His failure was not to realize it could come off as creepy.
It should have instead been done as a voluntary, “in the room” team building event where those who wanted could submit a few photos of family and/or times with friends or whatever they thought would help their teammates have a better grasp of them as a person and not just hockey player. Shared with all participants, not just the coach.
4th graders get to bring pictures for a show and tell to start the year. Babcock could’ve tried the same thing as a 4th graders.

McNamara’s best shifts look like that of a no-doubt top-two-round pick. He has NHL skating and puck skills to go with a 6-foot-2 frame, which is instantly appealing. The issue is the gap between those best shifts. Whether it’s hockey sense or compete issues, McNamara is very inconsistent and frustrating to watch, but if he ever figures it out, the former first-round pick in his OHL draft has the potential to pop.
Pronman says he can skate which is more than he says about anyone the Rangers have drafted. An 18 year old who has size and can skate. What’s to lose taking a look at him. He may have to start in the ECHL because of numbers though.

Lafrenier and Kakko will be in the top 6. Chytil may center Panarin, but that won’t change the ice time, Trocheck will play more than Chytil.
The other part of the Chytil centering Panarin equation, is the RW on that line. It would have to be Kakko. There has to be someone with a defensive conscious on that line. Certainly don’t want Lafrenière, who will be learning a new position, having to be the D presence on that line. He’d be much better off with Zibanejad and Kreider.
This is not my favorite option, but you could also play Zibanejad with Panarin, and Kreider with Chytil. Seems like a lot of moving pieces to fit Chytil as the 2C.

That would be my concern. The emphasis has to be on the forwards being more responsible. They have to cover for the D. They have allowed too many odd man rushes under GG. They were among the worst in the league. Also, Trouba has to be more selective about joining the rush since he can’t skate well enough to recover quickly. I also rememebr Mikkola joining the rush last year and leaving Fox out to dry. It just wasn’t smart. Everyone has to know their roles. They’re not interchangeable.
